Dietary omega-3 fatty acid and omega-3: omega-6 fatty acid ratio predict improvement in glucose disturbances in Japanese Brazilians

Objective: We investigated whether lifestyle-induced changes in dietary fat quality are related to Improvements on glucose metabolism disturbances in Japanese Brazilians at high risk of type 2 diabetes Methods: One hundred forty-eight first- and second-generation subjects with impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glycemia who attended a lifestyle intervention program for 12 mo were studied in the city of Bauru. State of Sao Paulo, Brazil Dietary fatty acid intakes at baseline and after 12 mo were estimated using three 24-h recalls. The effect of dietary fat intake on glucose metabolism was investigated by multiple logistic regression models Results: At baseline, mean standard deviation age and body mass index were 60 II y and 25 5 4.2 kg/m2, respectively After 12 mo. 92 subjects had normal plasma glucose levels and 56 remained in prediabetic conditions. Using logistic regression models adjusted for age, gender, generation, basal intake of explanatory nutrient, energy intake, physical activity, and waist circumference, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for reversion to normoglycemia were 3 14 (1 22-8 10) in the second wrote of total w-3 fatty acid, 4 26 (1.34-13 57) in the second tunic of eicosapentaenoic acid, and 280 (1 10-7.10) in the second tertile of linolenic acid. Similarly. subjects in the highest wrote of w-3.w-6 fatty acid ratio showed a higher chance of improving glucose disturbances (2 51, 1.01-6.37) Conclusions: Our findings support the evidence of an independent protective effect of omega-3 fatty acid and of a higher omega-3:omega-6 fatty acid ratio on the glucose metabolism of high-risk individuals (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc All rights reserved.

Effect of medium/omega-6 long chain triglyceride-based emulsion on leucocyte death and inflammatory gene expression

Lipid emulsion (LE) containing medium/omega-6 long chain triglyceride-based emulsion (MCT/omega-6 LCT LE) has been recommended in the place of omega-6 LCT-based emulsion to prevent impairment of immune function. The impact of MCT/omega-6 LCT LE on lymphocyte and neutrophil death and expression of genes related to inflammation was investigated. Seven volunteers were recruited and infusion of MCT/omega-6 LCT LE was performed for 6 h. Four volunteers received saline and no change was found. Blood samples were collected before, immediately afterwards and 18 h after LE infusion. Lymphocytes and neutrophils were studied immediately after isolation and after 24 and 48 h in culture. The following determinations were carried out: plasma-free fatty acids, triacylglycerol and cholesterol concentrations, plasma fatty acid composition, neutral lipid accumulation in lymphocytes and neutrophils, signs of lymphocyte and neutrophil death and lymphocyte expression of genes related to inflammation. MCT/omega-6 LCT LE induced lymphocyte and neutrophil death. The mechanism for MCT/omega-6 LCT LE-dependent induction of leucocyte death may involve changes in neutral lipid content and modulation of expression of genes related to cell death, proteolysis, cell signalling, inflammatory response, oxidative stress and transcription.

QCD sum rule calculation for the charmonium-like structures in the J/psi phi and J/psi omega invariant mass spectra

Using the QCD sum rules we test if the charmonium-like structure Y(4274), observed in the J/psi phi invariant mass spectrum, can be described with a D(s)(D) over bar (s0)(2317)+ h.c. molecular current with J(PC) = 0(-+). We consider the contributions of condensates up to dimension ten and we work at leading order in alpha(s). We keep terms which are linear in the strange quark mass m(s). The mass obtained for such state is mD(s)D(s0) = (4.78 +/- 0.54) GeV. We also consider a molecular 0(-+) D (D) over bar (0)(2400)+ h.c. current and we obtain m(DD0) = (4.55 +/- 0.49) GeV. Our study shows that the newly observed Y(4274) in the J/psi phi invariant mass spectrum can be, considering the uncertainties, described using a molecular charmonium current. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Free field realizations of the elliptic affine Lie algebra sl(2, R) circle plus (Omega(R)/dR)

In this paper we construct two free field realizations of the elliptic affine Lie algebra sl(2, R) circle plus Omega(R)/dR where R = C[t. t(-1), u vertical bar u(2) = t(3) - 2bt(2) + t]. The first realization provides an analogue of Wakimoto`s construction for Affine Kac-Moody algebras, but in the setting of the elliptic affine Lie algebra. Examples from trees, related to discrete subsets, pseudo-radiality and omega-boundedness

We construct some examples using trees. Some of them are consistent counterexamples for the discrete reflection of certain topological properties. All the properties dealt with here were already known to be non-discretely reflexive if we assume CH and we show that the same is true assuming the existence of a Suslin tree. In some cases we actually get some ZFC results. We construct also, using a Suslin tree, a compact space that is pseudo-radial but it is not discretely generated. With a similar construction, but using an Aronszajn tree, we present a ZFC space that is first countable, omega-bounded but is not strongly w-bounded, answering a question of Peter Nyikos.
