Objective: To assess the nutritional status and dietary practices of 0-24-month-old children living in Brazilian Amazonia. Design: Cross-sectional study. Information oil children`s dietary intakes was obtained from diet history data. Weight and length Were measured for anthropometric evaluation. Fe status Was assessed Using fasting venous blood samples; Hb, serum ferritin and soluble tranferrin receptor concentrations were measured. Setting: The towns of Assis Brasil and Acrelandia in the state of Acre, north-west Brazil. Subjects: A total of sixty-nine randomly selected 0-24-month-old children. Results: Of these children, 40.3 % were anaemic, 63.1% were Fe-deficient, 28.1% had Fe-deficiency anaemia and 11.6% were stunted. Breast-feeding was initiated by 97.1% of mother followed by early feeding with complementary foods. The dietary pattern reflected a high intake of carbohydrate-rich foods and cow`s milk, with irregular intakes Of fruit, Vegetables and meat. All infants and 92.3% of toddlers were at risk Of inadequate Fe intakes. Fe from animal foods contributed Oil average 0.5% and 14.3% to total dietary Fe intake among infants and toddlers, respectively. Conclusions: Poor nutritional status and inadequate feeding practices in this study population reinforce the importance of exclusive breast-feeding during the first 6 months of life. Greater emphasis is required to improve the bioavailability of dietary Fe during complementary feeding practices.

Background and aims Toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis may recur months or years after the primary infection. Rupture of dormant cysts in the retina is the accepted hypothesis to explain recurrence. Here, the authors present evidence supporting the presence of Toxoplasma gondii in the peripheral blood of immunocompetent patients. Methods Direct observation by light microscopy and by immunofluorescence assay was performed, and results were confirmed by PCR amplification of parasite DNA. Results The authors studied 20 patients from Erechim, Brazil, including acute infected patients, patients with recurrent active toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis, patients with old toxoplasmic retinal scars, and patients with circulating IgG antibodies against T gondii and absence of ocular lesions. Blood samples were analysed, and T gondii was found in the blood of acutely and chronically infected patients regardless of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis. Conclusions The results indicate that the parasite may circulate in the blood of immunocompetent individuals and that parasitaemia could be associated with the reactivation of the ocular disease.

Objectives The present study aimed to assess the effect of the specific dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) inhibitor sitagliptin on blood pressure and renal function in young prehypertensive (5-week-old) and adult spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs; 14-week-old). Methods Sitagliptin (40 mg/kg twice daily) was given by oral gavage to young (Y-SHR + IDPPIV) and adult (A-SHR R IDPPIV) SHRs for 8 days. Kidney function was assessed daily and compared with age-matched vehicle-treated SHR (Y-SHR and A-SHR) and with normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (Y-WKY and A-WKY). Arterial blood pressure was measured in these animals at the end of the experimental protocol. Additionally, Na(+)/H(+) exchanger isoform 3 (NHE3) function and expression in microvilli membrane vesicles were assessed in young animals. Results Mean arterial blood pressure of Y-SHR + IDPPIV was significantly lower than that of Y-SHR (104 +/- 3 vs. 123 +/- 5 mmHg, P < 0.01) and was similar to Y-WKY (94 +/- 4 mmHg, P > 0.05). Compared to Y-SHR, Y-SHR + IDPPIV exhibited enhanced cumulative urinary flow and sodium excretion and decreased NHE3 activity and expression in proximal tubule microvilli. In the A-SHR, sitagliptin treatment had no significant effect on either renal function or arterial blood pressure. Conclusion Our data suggest that DPPIV inhibition attenuates blood pressure rising in young prehypertensive SHRs, partially by inhibiting NHE3 activity in renal proximal tubule. The progression to end-stage renal failure is independent of the initial pathogenic mechanism. Metabolic acidosis is a common consequence of chronic renal failure that results from inadequate ammonium excretion and decreased tubular bicarbonate reabsorption. Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) is the immediate metabolic precursor of the heme molecule. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the levels of erythrocytes protoporphyrin IX at an animal model during progressive renal disease. A total of 36 eight-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into six groups: Normal, 4 and 8 weeks after 5/6 nephrectomy (NX). Renal function was evaluated by creatinine clearance and plasma creatinine levels. The autofluorescence of erythrocytes porphyrin of healthy and NX rats was analyzed using fluorescence spectroscopy. Emission spectra were obtained by exciting the samples at 405 nm. Significant differences between normal and NX rats autofluorescence shape occurred in the 600-700 nm spectral region. A correlation was observed between emission band intensity at 635 nm and progression of renal disease.
