The use of polyacrylamides (PAMs) for removing natural organic matter (NOM) from Paraiba do Sul River (Brazil)

This work assesses the efficiency of polyacrylamides for natural organic matter (NOM) removal from Paraiba do Sul River (Brazil) raw water for drinking purposes. Jar tests were performed following an experimental design protocol. Three kinds of polyacrylamides (anionic, cationic, and non-ionic) at 0.2 mg L(-1) were tested. After coagulation, turbidity, DOC, UVA(254) and SCAN (UV-absorbing material) were determined. Color and pH were also measured. It was found that polyacrylamides did not reduce the amounts of alum and lime needed in the process and that the amount of alum alone for removing UV-absorbing organic matter is significantly higher. Efficiency of the coagulation process decreased as follows: non-ionic -> cationic -> anionic -> no polyacrylamide. Removal efficiencies for the best case were: 100%, 90%, 83%, and 68% for turbidity, DOC, UVA(254), and SCAN, respectively.

Eutaleola, a replacement name for the homonym Euteleia (Bryozoa: Pasytheidae)

Eutaleola nom. nov. is proposed as a replacement name for Euteleia Marcus, 1938 (Bryozoa: Cheilostomata), a secondary homonym of Euteleia Raffray, 1904 (Arthropoda: Coleoptera). Eutaleola is a monospecific genus of Pasytheida e, found in warm shallow waters on both sides of the Atlantic and in deeper waters of the eastern Pacific. Brazilian material of Eutaleola evelinae (Marcus, 1938) comb. nov. is described and illustrated.

Neste artigo tivemos a intenção de oferecer ao leitor o resumo de um dos aspectos mais importantes da análise estrutural que realizamos, durante décadas, do texto de Jean Piaget, sobretudo as estreitas relações entre a Biologia e a Lógica na construção e na explicação do conhecimento científico. Nesse sentido, procuramos demonstrar que, a partir dos conceitos de implicação significante e de imagem mental criados por Piaget, um novo campo de investigações se abre, a saber, aquele que denominamos como o dos sistemas de significação não lógica, campo de suma relevância e que vem preencher uma secular lacuna entre a razão e a emoção até hoje presente nas pesquisas sobre os fenômenos normais e patológicos do psiquismo.

Mucosal Leishmaniasis and Abnormalities on Computed Tomographic Scans of Paranasal Sinuses

Studies evaluating radiologic aspects, local complications, and structural alterations of the paranasal sinus in patients with mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) are lacking The aim of this study was to analyze alterations of the paranasal sinuses in patients with ML by using computed tomography (CT) scans This prospective study evaluated 26 patients in Brazil with ML Nom December 2008 through June 2009 All patients underwent CT scans of the paranasal sinuses Paranasal thickening was observed in 25 patients (96%) Nasal perforation was observed in 17 patients (65%) Those patients who received re-treatment showed more abnormalities on CT scan than cured patients (P < 0 05) Complications of ML are not limited to the nasal mucosa but extend to the paranasal sinuses.
