The final contents of total and individual trans-fatty acids of sunflower oil, produced during the deacidification step of physical refining were obtained using a computational simulation program that considered cis-trans isomerization reaction features for oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids attached to the glycerol part of triacylglycerols. The impact of process variables, such as temperature and liquid flow rate, and of equipment configuration parameters, such as liquid height, diameter, and number of stages, that influence the retention time of the oil in the equipment was analyzed using the response-surface methodology (RSM). The computational simulation and the RSM results were used in two different optimization methods, aiming to minimize final levels of total and individual trans-fatty acids (trans-FA), while keeping neutral oil loss and final oil acidity at low values. The main goal of this work was to indicate that computational simulation, based on a careful modeling of the reaction system, combined with optimization could be an important tool for indicating better processing conditions in industrial physical refining plants of vegetable oils, concerning trans-FA formation.

alpha-d coincidence data are studied for the (6)Li + (59)Co reaction at E(lab) = 29.6 MeV. A kinematic analysis is used to identify which process, leading to the same final state, has the major contribution for selected angular regions. The contributions of the (6)Li sequential and direct breakup to the incomplete fusion/transfer process is discussed by considering the corresponding lifetimes obtained by using a semiclassical approach.

We present a method to determine the magnitude of the uncorrelated background distribution obtained with the event mixing technique, through the simultaneous observation of the projectile elastic scattering in different detectors, which correspond to random coincidences. The procedure is tested with alpha-d angular correlation data from the (6)Li + (59)Co reaction at E(lab) = 29.6 MeV. We also show that the method can be applied using the product of singles events, when singles measurements are available. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The ozonolysis of 2,4-xylidine (2,4-dimethyl-aniline) in acidic aqueous solution was investigated by determining the major reaction products and their evolution as a function of the reaction time and their dependence on the pH of the reaction system. 2,4-Dimethyl-nitrobenzene and 2,4-dimethyl-phenol were found to be primary reaction products; their formation might be explained by electron transfer and substitution reactions. 2,4-Dimethyl-phenol was further oxidized yielding 2,4-dimethyl- and/or 4,6-dimethyl-resorcinol by electrophilic addition of HO(center dot) radicals. The best fitting phenomenological kinetic model and the good convergence of calculated and experimentally determined rate constants imply two additional competitive pathways of substrate oxidation: (i) electrophilic addition of HO(center dot) radicals and fast subsequent substitution would also yield the resorcinol derivatives. (ii) Substrate and isolated products are thought to be oxidized by hydrogen abstraction at the benzylic sites, but the corresponding products (alcohols, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids) could not be identified. Fe(II) was added to probe for the presence of H(2)O(2), but had no or only a minor effect on the kinetics of the ozonolysis. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The reactions induced by the weakly bound (6)Li projectile interacting with the intermediate mass target (59)Co were investigated. Light charged particles singles and alpha-d coincidence measurements were performed at the near barrier energies E(lab) = 17.4, 21.5, 25.5 and 29.6 MeV. The main contributions of the different competing mechanisms are discussed. A statistical model analysis. Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC) calculations and two-body kinematics were used as tools to provide information to disentangle the main components of these mechanisms. A significant contribution of the direct breakup was observed through the difference between the experimental sequential breakup cross section and the CDCC prediction for the non-capture breakup cross section. A spectroscopic study was performed showing that the [Fe(III)(L(2-))(2)](1-) (L(2-) = dopacatecholate) complex reacts with Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) in an aqueous solution containing S(2)O(3)(2-) resulting in the soluble [M(L(1-))(3)](1-) (L(1-) = dopasemiquinone; M = Ni(II), Co(II) or Zn(II) complex species. The Raman and IR spectra of the [CTA][M(L(1-))(3)] complexes, CTA hexadecyltrimethylammonium cation, in the solid state were obtained. The kinetic constants for the metal substitution reactions were determined at four different temperatures, providing values for Delta W(not equal) Delta S(not equal) and Delta G(not equal). The reactions were slow (k = 10(-1)1 M s(-1)) and endothermic. The system investigated can be considered as a simplified model to explain some aspects of siderophore chemistry. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. This paper presents a study of the pozzolanic reaction kinetics between calcium hydroxide and a mixture of sugar cane bagasse with 20 and 30% of clay, burned at 800 and 1000 degrees C (SCBCA) by electrical conductivity measurements. A kinetic-diffusive model produced in previous studies by some of the authors was used. The model was fitted to the experimental data, which allowed the computation of the kinetic parameters of the pozzolanic reaction (reaction rate constant and free energy of activation) that rigorously characterised the pozzolanic activity of the materials. The results show that SCBCA demonstrated reactivity and good pozzolanic qualities in the range 800-1000 degrees C.

The influence of different M(2+) cations on the effective magnetic anisotropy of systems composed of MFe(2)O(4) (M Fe, Co and Mn) nanoparticles was investigated. Samples were prepared by the high-temperature (538 K) solution phase reaction of Fe (acac) 3, Co (acac) 2 and Mn (acac) 2 with 1,2 octanodiol in the presence of oleic acid and oleylamine. The final particles are coated by an organic layer of oleic acid that prevents agglomeration. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show that particles present near spherical form and a narrow grain size distribution, with mean diameters in the range of 4.5 - 7.6 nm. Powder samples were analyzed by ac susceptibility and Mossbauer measurements, and K(eff) for all samples was evaluated using both techniques, showing a strong dependence on the nature of the divalent cation. A study of the kinematics of the alpha-d coincidences in the (6)Li + (59)Co system at a bombarding energy of E(lab) = 29.6MeV is presented. With exclusive measurements performed over different angular intervals it is possible to identify the respective contributions of the sequential and direct projectile breakup components. The angular distributions of both breakup components are fairly well described by the Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels framework (CDCC). Furthermore, a careful analysis of these processes using a semiclassical approach provides information on both their lifetime and their distance of occurrence with respect to the target. Breakup to the low-lying (near-threshold) continuum is delayed, and happens at large internuclear distances. This suggests that the influence of the projectile breakup on the complete fusion process can be related essentially to the direct breakup to the (6)Li high-lying continuum spectrum.
Reaction mechanisms for weakly-bound, stable nuclei and unstable, halo nuclei on medium-mass targets
Resumo:
An experimental overview of reactions induced by the stable, but weakly-bound nuclei (6)Li, (7)Li and (9)Be, and by the exotic, halo nuclei (6)He, (8)B, (11)Be and (17)F on medium-mass targets, such as (58)Ni, (59)Co or (64)Zn, is presented. Existing data on elastic scattering, total reaction cross sections, fusion processes, breakup and transfer channels are discussed in the framework of a CDCC approach taking into account the breakup degree of freedom.

Methylglyoxal is an a-oxoaldehyde putatively produced in excess from triose phosphates, aminoacetone, and acetone in some disorders, particularly in diabetes. Here, we investigate the nucleophilic addition of ONOO(-), known as a potent oxidant and nucleophile, to methylglyoxal, yielding an acetyl radical intermediate and ultimately formate and acetate ions. The rate of ONOO(-) decay in the presence of methylglyoxal [k(2,app) = (1.0 +/- 0.1) x 10(3) M(-1) s(-1); k(2) approximate to 1.0 x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1)] at pH 7.2 and 25 degrees C was found to be faster than that reported with monocarbonyl substrates (k(2) < 10(3) M(-1) diacetyl (k(2) = 1.0 x 10(4) M(-1) s(-1)), or CO(2) (k(2) = 3-6 x 10(4) M(-1) s(-1)). The pH profile of the methylglyoxal peroxynitrite reaction describes an ascendant curve with an inflection around pH 7.2, which roughly coincides with the pK(a) values of both ONOOH and H(2)PO(4)(-) ion. Electron paramagnetic resonance spin trapping experiments with 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane revealed concentration-dependent formation of an adduct that can be attributed to 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane-CH(3)CO(center dot) (a(N) = 0.83 mT). Spin trapping with 3,5-dibromo-4-nitrosobenzene sulfonate gave a signal that could be assigned to a methyl radical adduct [a(N) = 1.41 mT; a(H) = 1.35 mT; a(H(m)) = 0.08 mT]. The 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane-CH(3)CO(center dot) adduct could also be observed by replacement of ONOO(-) with H(2)O(2), although at much lower yields. Acetyl radicals could be also trapped by added L-lysine as indicated by the presence of W-acetyl-L-lysine in the spent reaction mixture. This raises the hypothesis that ONOO(-)/H(2)O(2) in the presence of methylglyoxal is endowed with the potential to acetylate proteins in post-translational processes.

The performance of La((1-y))Sr(y)Ni(x)Co((1-x))O(3) perovskites for the water gas shift reaction (WGSR) was investigated. The samples were prepared by the co- precipitation method and were performed by the BET method, XRD, TPR, and XPS. The catalytic tests were performed at 300 and 400 A degrees C and H(2)O(v)/CO = 2.3/1 (molar ratio). The sample with the highest surface area is La(0.70)Sr(0.30)NiO(3). The XRD results showed the formation of perovskite structure for all samples, and the La(0.70)Sr(0.30)NiO(3) sample also presented peaks corresponding to La(2)NiO(4) and NiO, indicating that the solubility limit of Sr in the perovskite lattice was surpassed. The replacement of Co by Ni favored the reduction of the species at lower temperatures, and the sample containing Sr presented the highest amount of reducible species, as identified by TPR results. All samples were active, the Sr containing perovskite appearing the most active due to the highest surface area, presence of the La(2)NiO(4) phase, and higher content of Cu in the surface, as detected by XPS. Among the samples containing Co, the most active one was that with x = 0.70 (60% of CO conversion).

The effect of variations in the composition for ternary catalysts of the type Pt-x(Ru-Ir)(1-x)/C on the methanol oxidation reaction in acid media for x values of 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 is reported. The catalysts were prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses. The nanometric character (2.8-3.2 nm) of the sol-gel deposits was demonstrated by XRD and TEM while EDX and AAS analyses showed that the metallic ratio in the compounds was very near to the expected one. Cyclic voltammograms for methanol oxidation revealed that the reaction onset occur at less positive potentials in all the ternary catalysts tested here when compared to a Pt-0.75-Ru-0.25/C (E-Tek) commercial composite. Steady-state polarization experiments (Tafel plots) showed that the Pt-0.25(Ru-Ir)(0.75)/C catalyst is the more active one for methanol oxidation as revealed by the shift of the reaction onset towards lower potentials. In addition, constant potential electrolyses suggest that the addition of Ru and Ir to Pt decreases the poisoning effect of the strongly adsorbed species generated during methanol oxidation. Consequently, the Pt-0.25 (Ru-Ir)(0.75)/C Composite catalyst is a very promising one for practical applications. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
