The physical properties of the La(0.6)Y(0.1)Ca(0.3)MnO(3) compound have been investigated, focusing on the magnetoresistance phenomenon studied by both dc and ac electrical transport measurements. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis of ceramic samples prepared by the sol-gel method revealed that specimens are single phase and have average grain size of similar to 0.5 mu m. Magnetization and 4-probe dc electrical resistivity rho(T,H) experiments showed that a ferromagnetic transition at T(C) similar to 170 K is closely related to a metal-insulator (MI) transition occurring at essentially the same temperature T(MI). The magnetoresistance effect was found to be more pronounced at low applied fields (H <= 2.5 T) and temperatures close to the MI transition. The ac electrical transport was investigated by impedance spectroscopy Z(f,T,H) under applied magnetic field H up to 1 T. The Z(f,T,H) data exhibited two well-defined relaxation processes that exhibit different behaviors depending on the temperature and applied magnetic field. Pronounced effects were observed close to T (C) and were associated with the coexistence of clusters with different electronic and magnetic properties. In addition, the appreciable decrease of the electrical permittivity epsilon`(T,H) is consistent with changes in the concentration of e(g) mobile holes, a feature much more pronounced close to T (C).

The adsorption of pyridine (py) on Fe, Co, Ni and Ag electrodes was studied using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to gain insight into the nature of the adsorbed species. The wavenumber values and relative intensities of the SERS bands were compared to the normal Raman spectrum of the chemically prepared transition metal complexes. Raman spectra of model clusters M(4)(py) (four metal atoms bonded to one py moiety) and M(4)(alpha-pyridil) where M = Ag, Fe, Co or Ni were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) and used to interpret the experimental SERS results. The similarity of the calculated M(4)(py) spectra with the experimental SERS spectra confirm the molecular adsorption of py on the surface of the metallic electrodes. All these results exclude the formation of adsorbed alpha-pyridil species, as suggested previously. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory, including relativistic effects and spin-orbit coupling, has been employed to investigate the nature of the chemical bonding in the ground state of Tc(2) and Re(2). The Tc(2) ground state is found to be a 0(g)(+) state, with an effective bond order (EBO) of 4.4, and a dissociation energy of 3.25 eV. The Re(2) ground state is a 1(g) state, with EBO = 4.3. Almost degenerate to it, is a 0(g)(+) state (T(e) = 77 cm(-1)), with EBO = 4.1. Experimental evidence also indicates that the ground state is of 1(g) nature. The dissociation energy is computed to be 5.0 eV in agreement with an experimental estimate of 4 +/- 1 eV.

We performed a first principles total energy investigation on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of 3d-transition metal-encapsulated adamantane molecules (TM@C(10)H(16). with TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni). We find that the C-C interactions are strong enough to maintain the molecular rigidity upon TM incorporation, although outward relaxations and formation energies are large. We built a microscopic model that explains the electronic structure of those molecules. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, a systematic study of SO2 molecules interacting with pristine and transition metal (TM) covered C-60 is presented by means of first principles calculations. It is observed that the SO2 molecule interacts weakly with the pristine C-60 fullerene, although the resulting interaction is largely increased when the C-60 structure is covered with Fe, Mn, or Ti atoms and the SO2 Molecules are bounded through the TM atoms. The number of bounded SO2 molecules per TM atoms, in addition to the elevated binding energies per molecules, allows us to conclude that such composites can be used as a template for efficient devices to remove SO2 molecules or, alternatively, as SO2 gas sensor.

We carried out a first principles investigation on the electronic properties and chemical trends of 3d transition metal related impurities in diamond. In terms of formation energy, the interstitial site is considerably more unfavorable than the substitutional or divacancy ones. Going from Ti to Ni, the 3d-related energy levels in the gap become deeper toward the valence band in all three sites. However, in the divacancy one, those levels cross with the divacancy-related ones, such that the electronic property of the center depends on the character of the highest occupied level. The Cooks kinetic method has been very convenient to correlate the relative dissociation rates obtained by collision-induced fragmentation experiments with the energies of two related bonds in molecules and complexes in the gas phase. Reliable bond energy data are, however, not always available, particularly for polynuclear transition-metal complexes, such as the triruthenium acetate clusters of the general formula [Ru(3) (mu(3)-O)(mu-CH(3)COO)(6)(py)(2)(L)](+), where L = ring substituted N-heterocyclic ligands. Accordingly, their gas-phase collision-induced tandem mass spectrometry (CID MS/MS) dissociation patterns have been analyzed pursuing a relationship with the more easily accessible redox potentials (E(1/2)) and Lever`s E(L) parameters. In fact, excellent linear correlations of In(1/2A(L)/A(py)), where A(py) and A(L) are the abundance of the fragments retaining the pyridine (py) and L ligand, respectively, with E(1/2) and E(L) were found. This result shows that those electrochemical parameters are correlated with bond energies and can be used in the analysis of the dissociation data. Such modified Cooks method can be used, for example, to determine the electronic effects of substituents on the metal-ligand bonds for a series of transition-metal complexes. We investigate the formation of ferrihydrite nanoparticles (NPs) by hydrolysis of the Fe(III) alkoxide Fe(O(t)Bu)(3). Controlled amounts of water, up to 3.0 vol%, were added to the precursor solution yielding a series of hydrolyzed samples ranging from P0.0 (the unreacted precursor) to P3.0. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis evidenced the formation of high-crystalline ferrihydrite NP in sample P3.0, with grain size estimate of about 3.2 nm. The transition from the molecular precursor to the formation of crystalline magnetic NPs was followed through magnetization measurements M(T) and M(H), as well as Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS). M(T) measurements indicate a paramagnetic (PM) behavior for sample P0.0, characteristic of binuclear Fe-O-Fe units, which evolves to a superparamagnetic (SPM) behavior, with an energy barrier for the blocking process estimated for sample P3.0 as E(a) = 4.9 x 10(-21) J (E(a)/k(B) = 355 K), resulting in a high effective anisotropy constant K(eff) = 290 kJ/m(3). Magnetization loops at 5 K progressively change from PM-like to ferromagnetic-like shape upon increasing the hydrolysis process, although hysteresis (H(c) approximate to 500 Oe) only is apparent for P2.0 and higher. MS spectra at room temperature are PM/SPM doublets for all samples, while the MS spectra at T = 4.2 K reveal increasingly well-defined magnetic ordering as hydrolysis of the precursor stepwise progresses until well-crystallized ferrihydrite particles are formed. In this paper, we present a study about the influence of the porphyrin metal center and mesa ligands on the biological effects of meso-tetrakis porphyrins. Different from the cationic meso-tetrakis 4-N-methyl pyridinium (Mn(III)TMPyP), the anionic Mn(III) meso-tetrakis (para-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (Mn(III)TPPS4) exhibited no protector effect against Fe(citrate)-induced lipid oxidation. Mn(III)TPPS4 did not protect mitochondria against endogenous hydrogen peroxide and only delayed the swelling caused by tert-BuOOH and Ca(2+). Fe(III)TPPS4 exacerbated the effect of the tert-BuOOH, and both porphyrins did not significantly affect Fe(II)citrate-induced swelling. Consistently, Fe(III)TPPS4 predominantly promotes the homolytic cleavage of peroxides and exhibits catalytic efficiency ten-fold higher than Mn(III)TPPS4. For Mn(III)TPPS4, the microenvironment of rat liver mitochondria favors the heterolytic cleavage of peroxides and increases the catalytic efficiency of the manganese porphyrin due to the availability of axial ligands for the metal center and reducing agents such as glutathione (GSH) and proteins necessary for Compound II (oxomanganese IV) recycling to the initial Mn(III) form. The use of thiol reducing agents for the recycling of Mn(III)TPPS4 leads to GSH depletion and protein oxidation and consequent damages in the organelle. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
