The temperature and compositional dependences of thermo- optical properties of neodymium doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystals and fine grain ceramics have been systematically investigated by means of time- resolved thermal lens spectrometry. We have found that Nd:YAG ceramics show a reduced thermal diffusivity compared to Nd:YAG single crystals in the complete temperature range investigated (80-300 K). The analysis of the time- resolved luminescent properties of Nd(3+) has revealed that the reduction in the phonon mean free path taking place in Nd:YAG ceramics cannot be associated with an increment in the density of lattice defects, indicating that phonon scattering at grain boundaries is the origin of the observed reduction in the thermal diffusivity of Nd: YAG ceramics. Finally, our results showed the ability of the time- resolved thermal lens to determine and optimize the thermo- optical properties of Nd: YAG ceramic based lasers. Properties of hybrid films can be enhanced if their molecular architecture is controlled. In this paper, poly (p-phenylene vinylene) was mixed with stearic acid in order to form stable hybrid Langmuir monolayers. Surface properties of these films were investigated with measurements of surface pressure, and also with polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS). The films were transferred from the air-water interface to solid supports through the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, and the viability of the film as optical device was investigated with fluorescence spectroscopy. Comparing the fluorescent spectra for the polymer in solution, as a casting film, and as an LB film, the emission bands for LB films were narrower and appeared at lower wavelengths. The interactions between the film components and the design for the LB film may take advantage of the method to immobilize luminescent polymers in mixed ultrathin films adsorbed in solid matrices. Luminescence properties of Tb(3+) doped TeO(2)-ZnO-Na(2)O-PbO glasses containing silver nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. The absorption band due to the surface plasmon resonance in the NPs was observed. Its amplitude increases with the heat treatment of the samples that controls the nucleation of the NPs. Tb(3+) emission bands centered at approximate to 485, approximate to 550, approximate to 585, and approximate to 623 nm were detected for excitation at 377 nm. The whole spectrum is intensified by the appropriate annealing time of the samples. Enhancement by approximate to 200% of the Tb(3+) luminescence at 550 nm was observed for samples annealed at 270 degrees C during 62 h. This enhancement effect is due to the local field amplitude that increases with the amount of silver NPs and their aggregates. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.3010867]

Luminescence properties of Eu3+ doped TeO2-PbO-GeO2 glasses containing gold nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. The emission spectra of the samples exhibited enhancement of Eu3+ luminescence due to the presence of gold NPs. The emission at 614 nm. due to the Eu3+ hypersensitive transition D-5(0)-F-7(2), is much influenced by the gold NPs and increases by approximate to 100%. for samples heat-treated at 350 degrees C during 41 h. The solubilization of an europium (III) beta-diketonate chelate in aqueous medium and the changes in its photophysical properties upon its inclusion into an alpha-cyclodextrin hydrophobic cavity are described. The complex [Eu(tta)(3)center dot(H(2)O)(2)] (tta = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(thiophen-2-yl)butane-1,3-dione) was synthesized, characterized, and incorporated into the hydrophobic cavity by stirring in an alpha-cyclodextrin aqueous solution. The inclusion was confirmed by (1)H NMR, and the stoichiometry of association was obtained by the Job method. The maximum in the excitation spectrum of the alpha-CD inclusion compound in aqueous solution was shifted 28 nm compared with the maximum of non alpha-CD complex. The emission spectrum of the association is similar to that of the free solid complex and displays the characteristic (5)D(0) -> (7)F(0-4) Eu(3+) transitions.

Europium-doped lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO(3)) powder was prepared by using a combustion method. The crystallization, surface morphology, specific surface area and luminescence properties of the samples have been investigated. Photoluminescence studies of Eu doped LaAlO(3) showed orange-reddish emission due to Eu(3+) ions. LaAlO(3):Eu(3+) exhibits one thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) peak around 400 degrees C. Room temperature electron spin resonance spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of two centres. One of them (centre I) with principal g-value 2.017 is identified as an O(-) centre while centre II with an isotropic g-value 2.011 is assigned to an F(+) centre (singly ionized oxygen vacancy). An additional defect centre observed during thermal annealing around 300 degrees C grows with the annealing temperature. This centre (assigned to F(+) centre) originates from an F-centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons) and the F-centre along with the associated F(+) centre appear to correlate with the observed TSL peak in LaAlO(3):Eu(3+) phosphor. The activation energy for this peak has been determined to be 1.54 eV from TSL data. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Polycrystalline Eu(2+) and Dy(3+) doped barium aluminate materials, BaAl(2)O(4):Eu(2+),Dy(3+), were prepared with solid state reactions at temperatures between 700 and 1500 degrees C. The influence of the thermal treatments on the stability, homogeneity and structure as well as to the UV-excited and persistent luminescence of the materials was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, SEM imaging and infrared spectroscopies as well as by steady state luminescence spectroscopy and persistent luminescence decay curves, respectively. The IR spectra of the materials prepared at 250, 700, and 1500 degrees C follow the formation of BaAl(2)O(4) composition whereas the X-ray powder diffraction of compounds revealed how the hexagonal structure was obtained. The morphology of the materials at high temperatures indicated important aggregation due to sintering. The luminescence decay of the quite narrow Eu(2+) band at ca. 500 nm shows the presence of persistent luminescence after UV irradiation. The dopant (Eu(2+)) and co-clopant (Dy(3+)) concentrations affect the crystallinity and luminescence properties of the materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The synthesis, structural investigation, and photophysical properties of the complex [Tb(TTA)(2)(NO(3)) (TPPO)(2)] are reported. Unlike the analog tris-diketonate complex [Tb(TTA)(3)(TPPO)(2)], the new complex presents abnormally high luminescence intensity centered on the terbium ion. Our results clearly suggest a higher energy transfer efficiency from the TEA antenna ligand to the Tb(III) ion in the bis-diketonate complex compared with that in the tris-diketonate complex. A mechanism involving the increasing of triplet state energy when one TTA ligand is replaced by the NO(3)(-) group in the first coordination sphere is suggested and experimentally investigated to explain the anomalous luminescence properties of the new complex [Tb(TTA)(2)(NO(3))(TPPO)(2)]. Luminescence properties of Eu(3+) doped germanate glasses containing either silver or gold nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated for excitation at 405 nm. Enhanced emissions and luminescence quenching of the Eu(3+) transitions in the range from 570 to 720 nm were observed for samples having various concentrations of metallic NPs. Electric-dipole and magnetic-dipole transitions that originate from the Eu(3+) level (5)D(0) exhibit large enhancement due to the presence of the metallic NPs. The results suggest that the magnetic response of rare-earth doped metal-dielectric composites at optical frequencies can be as strong as their electric response due to the confinement of the optical magnetic field. Photochemical and photophysical properties of fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Clphen)(trans-L)](+) complexes, Clphen = 5-chloro-1,10-phenathroline and L = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene, bpe, or 4-styrylpyridine, stpy, were investigated to complement the understanding of intramolecular energy transfer process in tricarbonyl rhenium(I) complexes having an electron withdrawing group attached to polypyridyl ligands. These new compounds were synthesized, characterized and the photoisomerization quantum yields were accurately determined by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The true quantum yields for fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Clphen) (trans-bpe)](+) were constant (Phi = 0.55) at all investigated irradiation wavelengths. However, for fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Clphen)(trans-stpy)](+), similar true quantum yields were observed only at higher energy irradiation (Phi(313 nm) = 0.53 and Phi(365 nm) = 0.57), but it decreased significantly at 404 nm (Phi = 0.41). These results indicated different deactivation pathways for the trans-stpy complex photoisomerization. Quantum yields decreased as the (3)IL(trans-L) and (3)MLCT(Re -> NN) excited states become closer and the behavior was discussed in terms of the excited state energy gaps. Additionally, luminescence properties of photoproducts, fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Clphen)(cis-L)](+), were also investigated in different environments to analyze the relative energy of the (3)MLCT(Re -> Clphen) excited state for each compound. The fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Me(4)phen)(trans-L)](+) complexes, Me(4)phen = 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline and L = 4-styrylpyridine, stpy, or 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene, bpe, were synthesized and characterized by their spectroscopic, photochemical, and photophysical properties. The complexes exhibit trans-to-cis isomerization upon 313, 334, 365, and 404 nm irradiation, and the true quantum yields can be efficiently determined by absorption changes combined with (1)H NMR data. For fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Me(4)phen)(trans-bpe)](+) similar quantum yields were determined at all wavelengths investigated. However, a lower value (phi(true) = 0.35) was determined for fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Me(4)phen)(trans-stpy)](+) at 404 nm irradiation, which indicates different pathways for the photoisomerization process. The photoproducts, fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Me(4)phen)(cis-L)](+), exhibit luminescence at room temperature with two maxima ascribed to the (3)IL(Me4phen) and (3)MLCT(Re -> Me4phen) excited states. The luminescence properties were investigated in different media, and the behavior in glassy EPA at 77 K showed that the contribution of each emissive state is dependent on the excitation wavelength. The photochemical and photophysical behavior of the complexes were rationalized in terms of the energy gap of excited states and can be exploited in photoswitchable luminescent rigidity sensors.

The details of the mechanism of persistent luminescence were probed by investigating the trap level structure of Sr(2)MgSi(2)O(7):Eu(2+),R(3+) materials (R: Y, La-Lu, excluding Pm and Eu) with thermoluminescence (TL) measurements and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The TL results indicated that the shallowest traps for each Sr(2)MgSi(2)O(7):Eu(2+),R(3+) material above room temperature were always ca. 0.7 eV corresponding to a strong TL maximum at ca. 90 A degrees C. This main trap energy was only slightly modified by the different co-dopants, which, in contrast, had a significant effect on the depths of the deeper traps. The combined results of the trap level energies obtained from the experimental data and DFT calculations suggest that the main trap responsible for the persistent luminescence of the Sr(2)MgSi(2)O(7):Eu(2+),R(3+) materials is created by charge compensation lattice defects, identified tentatively as oxygen vacancies, induced by the R(3+) co-dopants.

It is reported in this work the preparation, characterisation and photoluminescence study of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) thin films co-doped with [Eu(tta)(3)(H(2)O)(2)] and [Tb(acac)(3)(H(2)O)(3)] complexes. Both the composition and excitation wavelength may be tailored to fine-tune the emission properties of these Ln(3+)-beta-diketonate doped polymer films, exhibiting green and red primary colours, as well as intermediate colours. In addition to the ligand-Ln(3+) intramolecular energy transfer, it is observed an unprecedented intermolecular energy transfer process from the (5)D(4) emitting level of the Tb(3+) ion to the excited triplet state T(1) of the tta ligand coordinated to the Eu(3+) ion. The PMMA polymer matrix acts as a co-sensitizer and enhances the overall luminescence intensity of the polymer films. Furthermore, it provides considerable UV protection for the luminescent species and improves the photostability of the doped system.

In this work we performed a thorough spectroscopic and thermo-optical investigation of yttrium aluminoborate glasses doped with neodymium ions. A set of samples, prepared by the conventional melt-quenching technique and with Nd(2)O(3) concentrations varying from 0.1 to 0.75 mol %, were characterized by ground state absorption, photoluminescence, excited state lifetime measurements, and thermal lens technique. For the neodymium emission at 1064 nm ((4)F(3/2) -> (4)I(11/2) transition), no significant luminescence concentration quenching was observed and the experimental lifetime values ranged around 70 mu s. The obtained values of thermal conductivity and diffusivity of approximately 10.3 x 10(-3) W / cm K and 4.0 x 10(-3) cm(2) / s, respectively, are comparable to those of commercial laser glasses. Moreover, the fluorescence quantum efficiency of the glasses, calculated using the Judd-Ofelt formalism and luminescence decay, lies in the range from 0.28 to 0.32, larger than the typical values obtained for Nd(3+) doped YAl(3)(BO(3))(4) crystals. In this work is reported the sensitization effect by polymer matrices on the photoluminescence properties of diaquatris(thenoyltrifluoroacetonate)europium(III), [Eu(tta)(3)(H(2)O)(2)], doped into poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) with doping percentage at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10% (mass) in film form. TGA results indicated that the Eu(3+) complex precursor was immobilized in the polymer matrix by the interaction between the Eu(3+) complex and the oxygen atoms of the PHB polymer when the rare earth complex was incorporated in the polymeric host. The thermal behaviour of these luminescent systems is similar to that of the undoped polymer, however, the T(onset) temperature of decomposition decreases with increase of the complex doping concentration. The emission spectra of the Eu(3+) complex doped PHB films recorded at 298 K exhibited the five characteristic bands arising from the (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) intraconfigurational transitions (J = 0-4). The fact that the quantum efficiencies eta of the doped film increased significantly revealed that the polymer matrix acts as an efficient co-sensitizer for Eu(3+) luminescent centres and therefore enhances the quantum efficiency of the emitter (5)D(0) level. The luminescence intensity decreases, however, with increasing precursor concentration in the doped polymer to greater than 5% where a saturation effect is observed at this specific doping percentage, indicating that changes in the polymeric matrix improve the absorption property of the film, consequently quenching the luminescent effect.
