Based on our previous work, we investigate here the effects on the wind and magnetospheric structures of weak-lined T Tauri stars due to a misalignment between the axis of rotation of the star and its magnetic dipole moment vector. In such a configuration, the system loses the axisymmetry presented in the aligned case, requiring a fully three-dimensional (3D) approach. We perform 3D numerical magnetohydrodynamic simulations of stellar winds and study the effects caused by different model parameters, namely the misalignment angle theta(t), the stellar period of rotation, the plasma-beta, and the heating index.. Our simulations take into account the interplay between the wind and the stellar magnetic field during the time evolution. The system reaches a periodic behavior with the same rotational period of the star. We show that the magnetic field lines present an oscillatory pattern. Furthermore, we obtain that by increasing theta(t), the wind velocity increases, especially in the case of strong magnetic field and relatively rapid stellar rotation. Our 3D, time-dependent wind models allow us to study the interaction of a magnetized wind with a magnetized extrasolar planet. Such interaction gives rise to reconnection, generating electrons that propagate along the planet`s magnetic field lines and produce electron cyclotron radiation at radio wavelengths. The power released in the interaction depends on the planet`s magnetic field intensity, its orbital radius, and on the stellar wind local characteristics. We find that a close-in Jupiter-like planet orbiting at 0.05 AU presents a radio power that is similar to 5 orders of magnitude larger than the one observed in Jupiter, which suggests that the stellar wind from a young star has the potential to generate strong planetary radio emission that could be detected in the near future with LOFAR. This radio power varies according to the phase of rotation of the star. For three selected simulations, we find a variation of the radio power of a factor 1.3-3.7, depending on theta(t). Moreover, we extend the investigation done in Vidotto et al. and analyze whether winds from misaligned stellar magnetospheres could cause a significant effect on planetary migration. Compared to the aligned case, we show that the timescale tau(w) for an appreciable radial motion of the planet is shorter for larger misalignment angles. While for the aligned case tau(w) similar or equal to 100 Myr, for a stellar magnetosphere tilted by theta(t) = 30 degrees, tau(w) ranges from similar to 40 to 70 Myr for a planet located at a radius of 0.05 AU. Further reduction on tau(w) might occur for even larger misalignment angles and/or different wind parameters.

We performed stellar population synthesis on the nuclear and extended regions of NGC 1068 by means of near-infrared spectroscopy to disentangle their spectral energy distribution components. This is the first time that such a technique is applied to the whole 0.8-2.4 mu m wavelength interval in this galaxy. NGC 1068 is one of the nearest and probably the most studied Seyfert 2 galaxy, becoming an excellent laboratory to study the interaction between black holes, the jets that they can produce and the medium in which they propagate. Our main result is that traces of young stellar population are found at similar to 100 pc south of the nucleus. The contribution of a power-law continuum in the centre is about 25 per cent, which is expected if the light is scattered from a Seyfert 1 nucleus. We find peaks in the contribution of the featureless continuum about 100-150 pc from the nucleus on both sides. They might be associated with regions where the jet encounters dense clouds. Further support to this scenario is given by the peaks of hot dust distribution found around these same regions and the H(2) emission-line profile, leading us to propose that the peaks might be associated to regions where stars are being formed. Hot dust also has an important contribution to the nuclear region, reinforcing the idea of the presence of a dense, circumnuclear torus in this galaxy. Cold dust appears mostly in the south direction, which supports the view that the south-west emission is behind the plane of the galaxy and is extinguished very likely by dust in the plane. Intermediate-age stellar population contributes significantly to the continuum, especially in the inner 200 pc.

We examined the effect of Angiotensin II (Ang II) on the interaction between the Ca(2+)/CaM complex and hNHE1. Considering that calmodulin binds to NHE1 at two sites (A and B), amino acids at both sites were modified and two mutants were constructed: SA(1K3R/4E) and SB(1K3R/4E). Wild type and mutants were transfected into PS120 cells and their activity was examined by H(+) flux (J(H+)). The basal J(H+) of wild type was 4.71 +/- 0.57 (mM/min), and it was similar in both mutants. However, the mutations partially impaired the binding of CaM to hNHE1. Ang II (10(-12) and 10(-9) M) increased the J(H+) in wild type and SB. Ang II (10(-6) M) increased this parameter only in SA. Ang II (10(-9) M) maintained the expression of calmodulin in wild type or mutants, and Ang II (10(-6) M) decreased it in wild type or SA, but not in SB. Dimethyl-Bapta-AM (10(-7) M), a calcium chelator, suppressed the effect of Ang II (10(-9) M) in wild type. With Ang II (10(-6) M), Bapta failed to affect wild type or SA, but it increased the J(H+) in SB. W13 or calmidazolium chloride (10(-5) M), two distinct calmodulin inhibitors, decreased the effect of Ang II (10(-9) M) in wild type or SB. With Ang II (10(-6) M), W13 or calmidazolium chloride decreased the J(H+) in wild type or SA and increased it in SB. Thus, with Ang II (10(-12) and 10(-9) M), site A seems to be responsible for the stimulation of hNHE1 and with Ang II (10(-6) M), site B is important to maintain its basal activity. YAG phosphor powders doped/codoped with Er(3+)/(Er(3+) + Yb(3+)) have been synthesised by using the solution combustion method. The effect of direct pumping into the (4)I(11/2) level under 980 nm excitation of doped/codoped Er(3+)/Yb(3+)-Er(3+) in Y(3)Al(5)O(12) (YAG) phosphor responsible for an infrared (IR) emission peaking at similar to 1.53 mu m corresponding to the (4)I(13/2)->(4)I(15/2) transition has been studied. YAG exhibits three thermally-stimulated luminescence (TSL) peaks at around 140A degrees C, 210A degrees C and 445A degrees C. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to identify the centres responsible for the TSL peaks. The room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of two distinct centres. One of the centres (centre I) with principal g-value 2.0176 is identified as O(-) ion, while centre II with an isotropic g-factor 2.0020 is assigned to an F(+) centre (singly ionised oxygen vacancy). An additional defect centre is observed during thermal-annealing experiments and this centre (assigned to F(+) centre) seems to originate from an F-centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons) and these two centres appear to correlate with the observed high-temperature TSL peak in YAG phosphor.

Background: The oocyte ability to undergo successful fertilization, cleavage and embryonic development depends on meiotic maturation and developmental competence acquisition. In vitro maturation (IVM) protocols currently use eCG, hCG or a combination of both, the effect of these gonadotrophins during IVM and subsequent embryonic development is still controversial. Several media have been used for IVM of porcine oocytes: TCM199, Whitten's and NCSU23 have also been shown to support pig oocyte IVM. This study was designed to determine the effect of hormonal supplementation period and maturation media during in vitro maturation of pig oocytes (1) and subsequent embryonic development (2). Materials, Methods & Results: Oocytes with intact cumulus oophurus layers and homogeneous cytoplasm were collected from prebubertal gilts. IVM was subjected in NCSU23, TCM199 or Whitten's media supplemented with 10 IU/mL eCG and 10 IU/mL hCG for the first 24 or 48 h of IVM. In each replicate the oocytes were fixed every 4 h from 32 to 48 h IVM or the past 48 h after IVM, oocytes were fertilized in vitro in mTBM medium for six hours and cultured in NCSU23 medium for nine days. Cleavage, blastocyst and hatching rates were evaluated at 48 h (day 2), 168 h (day 7) and 216 h (day 9), respectively. The addition of eCG and hCG during the first 24 h IVM increased the proportion of oocytes that reached MII stage at 44 h of maturation in NCSU23 medium. This effect was also observed in Whitten medium at 44 and 48 h (P < 0.05). However, it was not observed in the TCM199 medium. No effect of maturation medium on oocyte nuclear maturation (P > 0.05) was observed in oocytes matured in the presence of eCG and hCG during the first 24 h IVM or during 48 h IVM. A progressive increase of maturation indexes was observed on oocytes matured with hormonal supplementation in Whitten media for 24 h. Higher indexes were obtained at 44 and 48 h. When NCSU23 media was used, no difference after 36 h of maturation was observed. The same result was observed in TCM199. A progressive increase of maturation indexes was observed on oocytes matured with hormonal supplementation for 48 h in Whitten media. Higher indexes were obtained in 36 and 40 h. When NCSU23 or TCM199 were used, no difference was observed. No effect of IVM media on the percentage of fertilized oocytes and polyspermic oocytes or number of spermatozoa per fertilized oocytes was observed. Also, no effect of IVM media on cleavage and blastocyst rates was seen. However, the proportion of hatched blastocysts was lower in NCSU23 compared to Whitten or TCM199. Discussion: Similar results were reported by Marques et al. [13], that it no differences between hormonal supplementation for 22 or 44 h were observed. Therefore, more studies are needed to elucidate the role of these hormones in nuclear in vitro maturation in pig oocytes. In conclusion, no effect of maturation media on meiotic progression was observed. However, the proportion of oocytes that reached metaphase II (MII) stage was higher when eCG + hCG were added for 24 h than 48 h mainly at the 44 h of maturation. In addition, no differences were observed in cleavage and blastocyst rates of the cultured embryos. However, embryos cultured in NCSU23 showed lower rates of hatching compared to other media. These results indicated no effect of maturation media on the fertilization and embryonic development even in the presence of cysteine, PFF and EGF, except for hatched embryos that these rates were lower in NCSU23.

We report the first simultaneous zJHK spectroscopy on the archetypical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 covering the wavelength region 0.9-2.4 mu m. The slit, aligned in the north-south direction and centred in the optical nucleus, maps a region 300 pc in radius at subarcsec resolution, with a spectral resolving power of 360 km s-1. This configuration allows us to study the physical properties of the nuclear gas including that of the north side of the ionization cone, map the strong excess of continuum emission in the K band and attributed to dust and study the variations, both in flux and profile, in the emission lines. Our results show the following. (1) Mid- to low-ionization emission lines are split into two components, whose relative strengths vary with the position along the slit and seem to be correlated with the jet. (2) The coronal lines are single-peaked and are detected only in the central few hundred of pc from the nucleus. (3) The absorption lines indicate the presence of intermediate age stellar population, which might be a significant contributor to the continuum in the near-IR spectra. (4) Through some simple photoionization models we find photoionization as the main mechanism powering the emitting gas. (5) Calculations using stellar features point to a mass concentration inside the 100-200 pc of about 1010 M(circle dot).

The exact physical conditions generating the abundances of r-elements in environments such as supernovae explosions are still under debate. We evaluated the characteristics expected for the neutrino wind in the proposed model of type-II supernova driven by conversion of nuclear matter to strange matter. Neutrinos will change the final abundance of elements after freeze out of r-process nucleosynthesis, specially those close to mass peaks.

The Er(3)Al(5)O(12) phosphor powders were prepared using the solution combustion method. Formation and homogeneity of the Er(3)Al(5)O(12) phosphor powders have been verified by X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis respectively. The frequency up-conversion from Er(3)Al(5)O(12) phosphor powder corresponding to the (2)H(9/2) -> (4)I(15/2), (2)H(11/2) -> (4)I(15/2), (4)S(3/2) -> (4)I(15/2), (4)F(9/2) -> (4)I(15/2) and the infrared emission (IR) due to the (4)I(13/2) -> (4)I(15/2) transitions lying at similar to 410, similar to 524, similar to 556, 645-680 nm and at similar to 1.53 mu m respectively upon excitation with a Ti-Sapphire pulsed/CW laser have been reported. The mechanism responsible for the frequency up-conversion and IR emission is discussed in detail. Defect centres induced by radiation were studied using the techniques of thermoluminescence and electron spin resonance. A single glow peak at 430A degrees C is observed and the thermoluminescence results show the presence of a defect center which decays at high temperature. Electron spin resonance studies indicate a center characterized by a g-factor equal to 2.0056 and it is observed that this center is not related to the thermoluminescence peak. A negligibly small concentration of cation and anion vacancies appears to be present in the phosphor in accordance with the earlier theoretical predictions.

We present results on the system size dependence of high transverse momentum di-hadron correlations at root s(NN) = 200 GeV as measured by STAR at RHIC. Measurements in d + Au, Cu + Cu and Au + Au collisions reveal similar jet-like near-side correlation yields (correlations at small angular separation Delta phi similar to 0, Delta eta similar to 0) for all systems and centralities. Previous measurements have shown Chat the away-side (Delta phi similar to pi) yield is suppressed in heavy-ion collisions. We present measurements of the away-side Suppression as a function of transverse momentum and centrality in Cu + Cu and Au + Au collisions. The suppression is found to be similar in Cu + Cu and An + An collisions at a similar number of participants. The results are compared to theoretical calculations based on the patron quenching model and the modified fragmentation model. The observed differences between data and theory indicate that the correlated yields presented here will further constrain dynamic energy loss models and provide information about the dynamic density profile in heavy-ion collisions. The aim of this study was to estimate the indoor and outdoor concentrations of fungal spores in the Metropolitan Area of Sao Paulo (MASP), collected at different sites in winter/spring and summer seasons. The techniques adopted included cultivation (samples collected with impactors) and microscopic enumeration (samples collected with impingers). The overall results showed total concentrations of fungal spores as high as 36,000 per cubic meter, with a large proportion of non culturable spores (around 91 per cent of the total). Penicillium sp. and Aspergillus sp. were the dominant species both indoors and outdoors, in all seasons tested, occurring in more than 30 per cent of homes at very high concentrations of culturable airborne fungi [colony forming units(CFU) m−3]. There was no significant difference between indoor and outdoor concentrations. The total fungal spore concentration found in winter was 19 per cent higher than that in summer. Heat and humidity were the main factors affecting fungal growth; however, a non-linear response to these factors was found. Thus, temperatures below 16°C and above 25°C caused a reduction in the concentration (CFU m−3) of airborne fungi, which fits with MASP climatalogy. The same pattern was observed for humidity, although not as clearly as with temperature given the usual high relative humidity (above 70 per cent) in the study area. These results are relevant for public health interventions that aim to reduce respiratory morbidity among susceptible populations
