The masses of neutron-deficient nuclides near the N=Z line with A=64-80 have been determined using a direct time-of-flight technique which employed a cyclotron as a high-resolution spectrometer. The measured atomic masses for (68)Se and (80)Y were 67.9421(3) u and 79.9344(2) u, respectively. The new values agree with the 2003 Atomic Mass Evaluation. The result for (68)Se confirms that this nucleus is a waiting point of the rp-process, and that for (80)Y resolves the conflict between earlier measurements. Using the present results and the 2003 Atomic Mass Evaluation compilation, the empirical interaction between the last proton and the last neutron in N=Z nuclei has been revisited and extended.

L-Amino acid oxidases (LAAOs, EC 1.4.3.2) are flavoenzymes that catalyze the stereospecific oxidative deamination of an L-amino acid substrate to the corresponding a-ketoacid with hydrogen peroxide and ammonia production. The present work describes the first report on the antiviral (Dengue virus) and antiprotozoal (trypanocidal and leishmanicide) activities of a Bothrops jararaca L-amino acid oxidase (BjarLAAO-I) and identify its cDNA sequence. Antiparasite effects were inhibited by catalase, suggesting that they are mediated by H(2)O(2) production. Cells infected with DENV-3 virus previously treated with BjarLAAO-I, showed a decrease in viral titer (13-83-fold) when compared with cells infected with untreated viruses. Untreated and treated promastigotes (T. cruzi and L. amazonensis) were observed by transmission electron microscopy with different degrees of damage. Its complete cDNA sequence, with 1452 bp, encoded an open reading frame of 484 amino acid residues with a theoretical molecular weight and pl of 54,771.8 and 5.7, respectively. The cDNA-deduced amino acid sequence of BjarLAAO shows high identity to LAAOs from other snake venoms. Further investigations will be focused on the related molecular and functional correlation of these enzymes. Purpose To describe event-free survival (EFS) and toxicities in children with low-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) assigned to receive either continuous 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) and weekly methotrexate (MIX) or intermittent 6-MP with intermediate-dose MTX, as maintenance treatment. Patients and Methods Between October 1, 2000, and December 31, 2007, 635 patients with low-risk ALL were enrolled onto Brazilian Childhood Cooperative Group for ALL Treatment (GBTLI) ALL-99 protocol. Eligible children (n=544) were randomly allocated to receive either continuous 6-ME/MIX (group 1, n 272) or intermittent 6-MP (100 mg/m(2)/d for 10 days, with 11 days resting) and MIX (200 mg/m(2) every 3 weeks; group 2, n = 272). Results The 5-year overall survival (OS) and EFS were 92.5% +/- 1.5% SE and 83.6% +/- 2.1% SE, respectively. According to maintenance regimen, the OS was 91.4% +/- 2.2% SE (group 1) and 93.6% +/- 2.1% SE (group 2; P=.28) and EFS 80.9% +/- 3.2% SE (group 1) and 86.5% +/- 2.8% SE (group 2; P=.089). Remarkably, the intermittent regimen led to significantly higher EFS among boys (85.7% v 74.9% SE; P=027), while no difference was seen for girls (87.0% v 88.8% SE; P=.78). Toxic episodes were recorded in 226 and 237 children, respectively. Grade 3 to 4 toxic events for groups 1 and 2 were, respectively, 273 and 166 for hepatic dysfunction (P=.002), and 772 and 636 for hematologic episodes (P=.005). Deaths on maintenance were: seven (group 1) and one (group 2). Conclusion The intermittent use of 6-MP and MIX in maintenance is a less toxic regimen, with a trend toward better long-term EFS. Boys treated with the intermittent schedule had significantly better EFS.

Compound 48/80 (C48/80) is a synthetic condensation product of N-methyl-p-methoxyphenethyl am me with formaldehyde and is an experimental drug used since the 1950s to induce anaphylactic shock through histamine release. This study was carried out to further elucidate the mechanism by which this drug induces nitric oxide (NO) release. Our specific goals were: (a) to verify if C48/80`s relaxation occurs through the stimulation of histamine receptors; (b) to evaluate the endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by C48/80; (c) to identify NO as the endothelium-relaxing factor released by C48/80; (d) to identify the NO synthase (NOS) responsible for NO release; and (e) to verify if the relaxation induced by C48/80 is calcium and cyclic guanidine monophosphate (cGMP) dependent. Rabbit aorta segments, with and without endothelium, were suspended in organ chambers (25 ml) filled with Krebs solution maintained at 37 degrees C, bubbled with 95% O-2/5% CO2 (pH 7.4). Phenylephrine was used to contract the segments. Other protocol drugs included H-1- and H-2-receptor antagonists, cyclooxygenase, NOS, guanylyl cyclase and phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitors. Endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by C48/80 was also studied in calcium-free Krebs solution associated with a calcium chelator. In summary, our investigation demonstrated that the C48/80 vasodilating action: (a) does not depend on H-1 and H-2 histamine receptors; (b) is NO endothelium-dependent; (c) is dependent on the endothelial constitutive NOS (NOS-3) isoform activation; (d) is cGMP-dependent; and that NOS-3 activation by C48/80: (a) is independent of PLC up to 25 mu g/ml and (b) is partially dependent of this lipase in higher doses. Films of isotropic nanocrystalline Pd(80)Co(20) alloys were obtained by electrodeposition onto brass substrate in plating baths maintained at different pH values. Increasing the pH of the plating bath led to an increase in mean grain size without inducing significant changes in the composition of the alloy. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant was estimated and the value was of the same order of magnitude as that reported for samples with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. First order reversal curve (FORC) analysis revealed the presence of an important component of reversible magnetization. Also, FORC diagrams obtained at different sweep rate of the applied magnetic field, revealed that this reversible component is strongly affected by kinetic effect. The slight bias observed in the irreversible part of the FORC distribution suggested the dominance of magnetizing intergrain exchange coupling over demagnetizing dipolar interactions and microstructural disorder. The results of geological mapping, chemical analysis and radiometric dating of metabasic rocks of Betara Formation, and mapping and dating of those present in the Betara basement nucleus together with mylonitic granodiorite and syenogranite are reported here. U-Pb analysis of bulk zircon fractions from the metabasic rocks of the basement nucleus yielded a Statherian age of 1790 +/- 22 Ma, while the metabasic rocks from the upper part of the Betara Formation yielded a Calymmian age between 1500 and 1450 Ma. This age is a minimum for the deposition of the Betara Formation. The older metabasic rocks are associated with post-tectonic, possibly anorogenic syenogranite, while the younger ones are gabbro or very porphyritic ankaramite whose REE patterns are consistent with crystallization from an N-MORB parent magma. The observations and data point to the probable events associated with extensional processes of the end of Paleoproterozoic and early Mesoproterozoic. Similar registers of Statherian (1.80-1.75 Ga) and Calymmian (1.50-1.45 Ga) extensional events are recorded in other parts of the South American and African continents. The Neoproterozoic witnessed the formation and junction of the tectonic slices which formed the Apiai domain during the assemblage of western Gondwana.
