Sodium alumino-phosphate glasses co-doped with Yb(3+) and Tm(3+) ions have been prepared with notably low OH(-) content, and characterized from the viewpoint of their spectroscopic properties. In these glasses, Yb(3+) acts as an efficient sensitizer of excitation energy at 0.98 mu m - which can be provided by high power and low cost diode lasers, and subsequently undergoes non-resonant energy transfer to Tm(3+) ions ((2)F(5/2), (3)H(6) --> (2)F(7/2), (3)H(5)). Through this process, the emitting level (3)F(4) is rapidly populated, generating improved emission at 1.8 mu m ((3)F(4) --> (3)H(6)). In order to guarantee the efficiency of such favorable energy transfer, energy losses via multiphonon decay, Yb-Yb radiative trapping, and non- radiative transfer to OH(-) groups were evaluated, and minimized when possible. The dipole - dipole energy transfer microscopic parameters corresponding to Yb(3+) --> Tm(3+), Yb(3+) --> Yb(3+) and Tm(3+) --> Tm(3+) transfers, calculated by the Forster-Dexter model, are C(Yb-Tm) = 2.9 x 10(-40) cm(6) s(-1), C(Yb-Yb) = 42 x 10(-40) cm(6) s(-1) and C(Tm-Tm) = 43 x 10(-40) cm(6) s(-1), respectively.

We elucidate the dependence of purity and entanglement of two-photon states generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion on the parameters of the source, such as crystal length, pump beam divergence, frequency bandwidth, and detectors angular aperture. The effect of crystal anisotropy is taken into account. Numerical simulations are presented for two types of commonly used source configurations. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study the mutual interaction between the dark sectors (dark matter and dark energy) of the Universe by resorting to the extended thermodynamics of irreversible processes and constrain the former with supernova type Ia data. As a by-product, the present dark matter temperature results are not extremely small and can meet the independent estimate of the temperature of the gas of sterile neutrinos.

The combination of luminescent polymers and suitable energy-accepting materials may lead to a molecular-level control of luminescence in nanostructured films. In this study, the properties of layer-by-layer (LbL) films of polyp-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) were investigated with steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopies, where fluorescence quenching was controlled by interposing inert polyelectrolyte layers between the PPV donor and acceptor layers made with either Congo Red (CR) or nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc). The dynamics of the excited state of PPV was affected by the energy-accepting layers, thus confirming the presence of resonant energy transfer mechanisms. Owing to the layered structured of both energy donor and acceptor units, energy transfer varied with the distance between layers, r, according to 1/r(n) with n = 2 or 3, rather than with 1/r(6) predicted by the Forster theory for interacting point dipoles.

Photoluminescence and electroluminescence of PVK films doped with fac-[ClRe(CO)(3)(bpy)], bpy=2,2`-bipyridine, are investigated. Photoluminescence spectra of spin-coated PVK films (lambda(exc)=290 nm) exhibit a broad band centered at 405 nm. As the concentration of dopant increases, the polymer emission is quenched and a band at 555 nm appears (isosbestic point at 475 nm). In OLEDs with ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK/butylPBD/Al architecture doped with fac-[ClRe(CO)(3)(bpy)], the polymer host emission is completely quenched even at the lowest concentration of dopant. The electroluminescence spectra of the devices show that there is an efficient energy transfer from the host to the dopant, which exhibits a very intense emission at 580 nm. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. This work reports the energy transfer mechanism process of [Eu(TTA)(2)(NO(3))(TPPO)(2)] (bis-TTA complex) and [Eu(TTA)(3)(TPPO)(2)] (tris-TTA complex) based on experimental and theoretical spectroscopic properties, where TTA = 2-thienoyltrifluoroacetone and TPPO = triphenylphosphine oxide. These complexes were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy and thermogavimetric analysis. The theoretical complexes geometry data by using Sparkle model for the calculation of lanthanide complexes (SMLC) is in agreement with the crystalline structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The emission spectra for [Gd(TTA)(3)(TPPO)(2)] and [Gd(TTA)(2) (NO(3))(TPPO)(2)] complexes are associated to T -> S(0) transitions centered on coordinated TTA ligands. Experimental luminescent properties of the bis-TTA complex have been quantified through emission intensity parameters Omega(lambda)(lambda = 2 and 4), spontaneous emission rates (A(rad)), luminescence lifetime (tau), emission quantum efficiency (eta) and emission quantum yield (q), which were compared with those for tris-TTA complex. The experimental data showed that the intensity parameter value for bis-TTA complex is twice smaller than the one for tris-TTA complex, indicating the less polarizable chemical environment in the system containing nitrate ion. A good agreement between the theoretical and experimental quantum yields for both Eu(Ill) complexes was obtained. The triboluminescence (TL) of the [Eu(TTA)(2)(NO(3))(TPPO)(2)] complexes are discussed in terms of ligand-to-metal energy transfer. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All fights reserved.

The Er(3)Al(5)O(12) phosphor powders were prepared using the solution combustion method. Formation and homogeneity of the Er(3)Al(5)O(12) phosphor powders have been verified by X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis respectively. The frequency up-conversion from Er(3)Al(5)O(12) phosphor powder corresponding to the (2)H(9/2) -> (4)I(15/2), (2)H(11/2) -> (4)I(15/2), (4)S(3/2) -> (4)I(15/2), (4)F(9/2) -> (4)I(15/2) and the infrared emission (IR) due to the (4)I(13/2) -> (4)I(15/2) transitions lying at similar to 410, similar to 524, similar to 556, 645-680 nm and at similar to 1.53 mu m respectively upon excitation with a Ti-Sapphire pulsed/CW laser have been reported. The mechanism responsible for the frequency up-conversion and IR emission is discussed in detail. Defect centres induced by radiation were studied using the techniques of thermoluminescence and electron spin resonance. A single glow peak at 430A degrees C is observed and the thermoluminescence results show the presence of a defect center which decays at high temperature. Electron spin resonance studies indicate a center characterized by a g-factor equal to 2.0056 and it is observed that this center is not related to the thermoluminescence peak. A negligibly small concentration of cation and anion vacancies appears to be present in the phosphor in accordance with the earlier theoretical predictions.

The optical, magnetic and structural properties of Eu doped low silica calcium aluminosilicate glasses were investigated. The optical absorption coefficient presented two bands at 39 246 and 29 416 cm(-1), which were assigned respectively to the 4f(7) ((8)S(7/2)) -> 4f(6) (4F(J)) 5d (T(2g)), and 4f(7) ((8)S(7/2)) -> 4f(6) (4F(J)) 5d (E(g)) transitions of Eu(2+). The fluorescence measured at 300 K on a sample doped with 0.5 wt% of Eu(2)O(3) exhibited a broad band centered at 17 350 cm(-1), which is attributed to the 4f(6)5d -> 4f(7) transition of Eu(2+), whereas the additional peaks are due to the (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) (J = 1, 2, 4) transitions of Eu(3+). From magnetization and XANES data it was possible to evaluate the fractions of Eu(2+) and Eu(3+) for the sample doped with 0.5 and 5.0 wt% of Eu(2)O(3), the values of which were approximately 30 and 70%, respectively.

Er(3+) doped Y(2)O(3) phosphor was prepared by the solution combustion method and characterized using powder x-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive analysis of x-ray mapping studies. Room temperature near infrared (NIR) to green up-conversion (UC) emissions in the region 520-580 nm {((2)H(11/2), (4)S(3/2)) -> (4)I(15/2)} and red UC emissions in the region 650-700 nm ((4)F(9/2) -> (4)I(15/2)) of Er(3+) ions have been observed upon direct excitation to the (4)I(11/2) level using similar to 972 nm laser radiation of nanosecond pulses. The possible mechanisms for the UC processes have been discussed on the basis of the energy level scheme, the pump power dependence as well as based on the temporal evolution. The excited state absorption is observed to be the dominant mechanism for the UC process. Y(2)O(3) : Er exhibits one thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) peak around 367 degrees C. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to study the defect centres induced in the phosphor by gamma irradiation and also to identify the centres responsible for the TSL peak. Room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of at least three distinct centres. One of them (centre I) with principal g-values g(parallel to) = 2.0415 and g(perpendicular to) = 2.0056 is identified as O(2)(-) centre while centre II with an isotropic g-factor 2.0096 is assigned to an F(+)-centre (singly ionized oxygen vacancy). Centre III is also assigned to an F(+)-centre with a small g-factor anisotropy (g(parallel to) = 1.974 and g(perpendicular to) = 1.967). Additional defect centres are observed during thermal annealing experiments and one of them appearing around 330 degrees C grows with the annealing temperature. This centre (assigned to an F(+)-centre) seems to originate from an F-centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons) and the F-centre appears to correlate with the observed TSL peak in Y2O3 : Er phosphor. The trap depth for this peak has been determined to be 0.97 eV from TSL data.

Energy transfer processes were studied in two sets of Yb3+ and Tm3+ co-doped sodium-metaphosphate glasses, prepared in air and nitrogen atmospheres. Using Forster, Dexter, and Miyakawa theoretical models, the energy transfer parameters were calculated. The main ion-ion energy transfer processes analyzed were energy migration among Yb3+ ions, cross-relaxations between Yb3+ and Tm3+ ions, and interactions with OH- radicals. The results indicated that Yb -> Tm energy transfer favors 1.8 mu m emissions, and there is no evidence of concentration quenching up to 2% Tm2O3 doping. As expected, samples prepared in nitrogen atmosphere present higher fluorescence quantum efficiency than those prepared in air, and this feature is specially noted in the near-infrared region, where the interaction with the OH- radicals is more pronounced. This work presents the optical properties of erbium-doped and erbium/ytterbium codoped Na(2)O-Al(2)O(3)-TiO(2)-Nb(2)O(5)-P(2)O(5) glass systems and also the characterization of planar waveguides obtained by typical thermally assisted Ag+<-> Na+ ion-exchange process. The glass systems allow the preparation of single mode and multimode planar waveguides presenting a strong and relatively broad emission at 1536 nm. The emission signal in the infrared region is intensified for silver-containing samples when compared with free-silver samples. The emission signal intensification may be attributed to a nonplasmonic energy transfer from silver species to Er3+ ions as no bands related to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of silver nanoparticles were observed.

Structural, spectroscopic and dielectric properties of thulium-doped laser-heated pedestal Ta(2)O(5) as-grown fibres were studied. Undoped samples grow preferentially with a single crystalline monoclinic structure. The fibre with the lowest thulium content (0.1 at%) also shows predominantly a monoclinic phase and no intra-4f(12) Tm(3+) recombination was observed. For sample with the highest thulium amount (1.0 at%), the appearance of a dominant triclinic phase as well as intraionic optical activation was observed. The dependence of photoluminescence on excitation energy allows identification of different site locations of Tm(3+) ions in the lattice. The absence of recombination between the first and the ground-state multiplets as well as the temperature dependence of the observed transitions was justified by an efficient energy transfer between the Tm(3+) ions. Microwave dielectric properties were investigated using the small perturbation theory. At a frequency of 5 GHz, the undoped material exhibits a dielectric permittivity of 21 and for thulium-doped Ta(2)O(5) samples it decreases to 18 for the highest doping concentration. Nevertheless, the dielectric losses maintain a very low value. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Unveiling the mechanisms of energy relaxation in biomolecules is key to our understanding of protein stability, allostery, intramolecular signaling, and long-lasting quantum coherence phenomena at ambient temperatures. Yet, the relationship between the pathways of energy transfer and the functional role of the residues involved remains largely unknown. Here, we develop a simulation method of mapping out residues that are highly efficient in relaxing an initially localized excess vibrational energy and perform site-directed mutagenesis functional assays to assess the relevance of these residues to protein function. We use the ligand binding domains of thyroid hormone receptor (TR) subtypes as a test case and find that conserved arginines, which are critical to TR transactivation function, are the most effective heat diffusers across the protein structure. These results suggest a hitherto unsuspected connection between a residue`s ability to mediate intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution and its functional relevance.

Red, blue and green emitting rare earth compounds (RE(3+) = Eu(3+), Gd(3+) and Tb(3+)) containing the benzenetricarboxylate ligands (BTC) [hemimellitic (EMA), trimellitic (TLA) and trimesic (TMA)] were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, complexometric titration, X-ray diffraction patterns, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The complexes presented the following formula: [RE(EMA)(H(2)O)(2)], [RE(TLA)(H(2)O)(4)] and [RE(TMA)(H(2)O)(G)], except for Tb-TMA compound, which was obtained only as anhydrous. Phosphorescence data of Gd(3+)-(BTC) complexes showed that the triplet states (T) of the BTC(3-) anions have energy higher than the main emitting states of the Eu(3+) ((5)D(0)) and Tb(3+) ((5)D(4)), indicating that BTC ligands can act as intramolecular energy donors for these metal ions. The high values of experimental intensity parameters (Omega(2)) of Eu(3+)-(BTC) complexes indicate that the europium ion is in a highly polarizable chemical environment. Based on the luminescence spectra, the energy transfer from the T state of BTC ligands to the excited (5)D(0) and (5)D(4) levels of the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions is discussed. The emission quantum efficiencies (eta) of the (5)D(0) emitting level of the Eu(3+) ion have been also determined. In the case of the Tb(3+) ion, the photoluminescence data show the high emission intensity of the characteristic transitions (5)D(4) -> (7)F(J) (J=0-6), indicating that the BTC ligands are good sensitizers. The RE(3+)-(BTC) complexes act as efficient light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs) and can be used as tricolor luminescent materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

New lanthanide complexes with benzeneseleninic (ABSe) and 4-chloro-benzeneseleninic (ABSeCl) acids have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and UV-visible spectroscopies. The emission spectra of the trivalent europium complexes presented the typical electronic (5)D(0) -> (7)F(j) transitions of the ion (J = 0-4). The ground-state geometries of the europium complexes have been calculated by using the Sparkle/AM1 model. From these results, the 4f-4f intensity parameters and energies of the ligand singlet and triplet excited states have been obtained. The lower emission quantum yield for the [Eu(ABSe)(3)(H(2)O)(2)](H(2)O)(2) compound, as compared to the [Eu(Al(3)SeCl)(3)(H(2)O)(2)] one, can be associated to the higher numbers of water molecules, in the first and second coordination spheres, that contribute to the luminescence quenching. The [Eu(Al(3)Se)(3)(H(2)O)(2)](H(2)O)(2) complex presents an intermediate state whose energy difference with respect to the first excited singlet state is resonant with three phonons from the water molecules, favouring a multiphonon relaxation process from the singlet state followed by a fast internal conversion process; this effect is less pronounced in the complex with the ABSeCl ligand. The luminescence decay curves of the gadolinium complexes indicate that the level responsible for the intramolecular energy transfer process has a triplet character for both compounds. The nephelauxetic effect in these compounds was investigated under the light of a recently proposed covalency scale based on the concept of overlap polarizability of the chemical bond.
