Pure N,N`-di(methoxycarbonylsulfenyl)urea, [CH(3)OC(O)SNH](2)CO, is quantitatively prepared by the hydrolysis reaction of CH(3)OC(O)SNCO and characterized by (1)H NMR, GC-MS and FTIR spectroscopy techniques. Structural and conformational properties are analyzed using a combined approach with data obtained from X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectra and theoretical calculation methods. The IR and Raman spectra for normal and deuterated species are reported. The crystal structure of [CH(3)OC(O)SNH](2)CO was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The substance crystallizes in the orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2 space group with a = 9.524(2), b = 12.003(1), c = 4.481 (1) angstrom, and Z = 2 moieties in the unit cell. The molecule is sited on a twofold crystallographic axis (C(2)) parallel to c and shows the anti-anti conformation (S-N single bonds antiperiplanar with respect to the opposite C-N single bonds in sulfenyl-urea-sic group). Neighboring molecules are arranged in a chain motif that extends along the C(2)-axis and is held by bifurcated NH center dot center dot center dot O center dot center dot center dot HN intermolecular bonds. A local planar symmetry is observed in the crystal for the central -SN(H)C(O)N(H)S- skeleton. Experimental and calculated data allow to trace this structural feature to the occurrence of N-H center dot center dot center dot O=C hydrogen bonding interactions. Calculated vibrational and structural properties are in good agreement with the experimentally determined features. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The past decade has seen significant increases in combustion-generated ambient particles, which contain a nanosized fraction (less than 100 nm), and even greater increases have occurred in engineered nanoparticles (NPs) propelled by the booming nanotechnology industry. Although inhalation of these particulates has become a public health concern, human health effects and mechanisms of action for NPs are not well understood. Focusing on the human airway smooth muscle cell, here we show that the cellular mechanical function is altered by particulate exposure in a manner that is dependent upon particle material, size and dose. We used Alamar Blue assay to measure cell viability and optical magnetic twisting cytometry to measure cell stiffness and agonist-induced contractility. The eight particle species fell into four categories, based on their respective effect on cell viability and on mechanical function. Cell viability was impaired and cell contractility was decreased by (i) zinc oxide (40-100 nm and less than 44 mu m) and copper(II) oxide (less than 50 nm); cell contractility was decreased by (ii) fluorescent polystyrene spheres (40 nm), increased by (iii) welding fumes and unchanged by (iv) diesel exhaust particles, titanium dioxide (25 nm) and copper(II) oxide (less than 5 mu m), although in none of these cases was cell viability impaired. Treatment with hydrogen peroxide up to 500 mu M did not alter viability or cell mechanics, suggesting that the particle effects are unlikely to be mediated by particle-generated reactive oxygen species. Our results highlight the susceptibility of cellular mechanical function to particulate exposures and suggest that direct exposure of the airway smooth muscle cells to particulates may initiate or aggravate respiratory diseases.

Measurements of down-welling microwave radiation from raining clouds performed with the Advanced Microwave Radiometer for Rain Identification (ADMIRARI) radiometer at 10.7-21-36.5 GHz during the Global Precipitation Measurement Ground Validation ""Cloud processes of the main precipitation systems in Brazil: A contribution to cloud resolving modeling and to the Global Precipitation Measurement"" (CHUVA) campaign held in Brazil in March 2010 represent a unique test bed for understanding three-dimensional (3D) effects in microwave radiative transfer processes. While the necessity of accounting for geometric effects is trivial given the slant observation geometry (ADMIRARI was pointing at a fixed 30 elevation angle), the polarization signal (i.e., the difference between the vertical and horizontal brightness temperatures) shows ubiquitousness of positive values both at 21.0 and 36.5 GHz in coincidence with high brightness temperatures. This signature is a genuine and unique microwave signature of radiation side leakage which cannot be explained in a 1D radiative transfer frame but necessitates the inclusion of three-dimensional scattering effects. We demonstrate these effects and interdependencies by analyzing two campaign case studies and by exploiting a sophisticated 3D radiative transfer suited for dichroic media like precipitating clouds.

Nandrolone is an anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) that is highly abused by individuals seeking enhanced physical strength or body appearance. Supraphysiological doses of this synthetic testosterone derivative have been associated with many physical and psychiatric adverse effects, particularly episodes of impulsiveness and overt aggressive behavior. As the neural mechanisms underlying AAS-induced behavioral disinhibition are unknown, we investigated the status of serotonergic system-related transcripts in several brain areas of mice receiving prolonged nandrolone administration. Male C57BL/6J mice received 15 mg/kg of nandrolone decanoate subcutaneously once daily for 28 days, and different sets of animals were used to investigate motor-related and emotion-related behaviors or 5-HT-related messenger RNA (mRNA) levels by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. AAS-injected mice had increased body weight, were more active and displayed anxious-like behaviors in novel environments. They exhibited reduced immobility in the forced swim test, a higher probability of being aggressive and more readily attacked opponents. AAS treatment substantially reduced mRNA levels of most investigated postsynaptic 5-HT receptors in the amygdala and prefrontal cortex. Interestingly, the 5-HT(1B) mRNA level was further reduced in the hippocampus and hypothalamus. There was no alteration of 5-HT system transcript levels in the midbrain. In conclusion, high doses of AAS nandrolone in male mice recapitulate the behavioral disinhibition observed in abusers. Furthermore, these high doses downregulate 5-HT receptor mRNA levels in the amygdala and prefrontal cortex. Our combined findings suggest these areas as critical sites for AAS-induced effects and a possible role for the 5-HT(1B) receptor in the observed behavioral disinhibition.

Background/Aim: Chagas` disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and occurs in most Latin American countries. The protozoan may colonize the central nervous system (CNS) of immune-compromised human hosts, thus causing neuronal disorders. Systemic control of the intracellular forms of the parasite greatly depends on the establishment of a TH1 response and subsequent nitric oxide (NO) release. At the CNS, it is known that low concentrations of NO promote neuronal survival and growth, while high concentrations exert toxic effects and neuron death. Accounting for NO production by astrocytes is the glia-derived factor S100 beta, which is overproduced in some neurodegenerative diseases. In the current work, we studied the expression of NO, interferon (IFN)-gamma and S100 beta in the spinal cord tissue of IL-12p40KO mice infected with T. cruzi, a model of neurodegenerative process. Methods: IL-12p40KO and wild-type (WT) female mice infected with T. cruzi Sylvio X10/4 (10(5) trypomastigotes, intraperitoneally) were euthanized when IL-12p40KO individuals presented limb paralysis. Spinal cord sections were submitted to immunohistochemical procedures for localization of neurofilament, laminin, nitrotyrosine, NO synthases (NOS), IFN-gamma and S100 beta. The total number of neurons was estimated by stereological analysis and the area and intensity of immunoreactivities were assessed by microdensitometric/morphometric image analysis. Results: No lesion was found in the spinal cord sections of WT mice, while morphological disarrangements, many inflammatory foci, enlarged vessels, amastigote nests and dying neurons were seen at various levels of IL-12p40KO spinal cord. Compared to WT mice, IL-12p40KO mice presented a decrement on total number of neurons (46.4%, p<0.05) and showed increased values of immunoreactive area for nitrotyrosine (239%, p<0.01) and NOS (544%, p<0.001). Moreover, the intensity of nitrotyrosine (16%, p<0.01), NOS (38%, p<0.05) and S100 beta (21%, p<0.001) immunoreactivities were also augmented. No IFN-gamma labeled cells were seen in WT spinal cord tissue, contrary to IL-12p40KO tissue that displayed inflammatory infiltrating cells and also some parenchymal cells positively labeled. Conclusion: We suggest that overproduction of NO may account for neuronal death at the spinal cord of T. cruzi-infected IL-12p40KO mice and that IFN-gamma and S100 beta may contribute to NOS activation in the absence of IL-12. The type I and type II heat-labile enterotoxins (LT-I and LT-II) are strong mucosal adjuvants when they are coadministered with soluble antigens. Nonetheless, data on the parenteral adjuvant activities of LT-II are still limited. Particularly, no previous study has evaluated the adjuvant effects and induced inflammatory reactions of LT-II holotoxins or their B pentameric subunits after delivery via the intradermal (i.d.) route to mice. In the present report, the adjuvant and local skin inflammatory effects of LT-IIa and its B subunit pentamer (LT-IIaB(5)) were determined. When coadministered with ovalbumin (OVA), LT-IIa and, to a lesser extent, LT-IIaB(5) exhibited serum IgG adjuvant effects. In addition, LT-IIa but not LT-IIaB(5) induced T cell-specific anti-OVA responses, particularly in respect to induction of antigen-specific cytotoxic CD8(+) T cell responses. LT-IIa and LT-IIaB(5) induced differential tissue permeability and local inflammatory reactions after i.d. injection. Of particular interest was the reduced or complete lack of local reactions, such as edema and tissue induration, in mice i.d. inoculated with LT-IIa and LT-IIaB(5), respectively, compared with mice immunized with LT-I. In conclusion, the present results show that LT-IIa and, to a lesser extent, LT-IIaB(5) exert adjuvant effects when they are delivered via the i.d. route. In addition, the low inflammatory effects of LT-IIa and LT-IIaB(5) in comparison to those of LT-I support the usefulness of LT-IIa and LT-IIaB(5) as parenterally delivered vaccine adjuvants.

The phase change of a natural hemimorphite sample from Minas Gerais (Brazil) was investigated by two X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods and by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Applying successive thermal treatments, the crystal structure undergoes two orientation conversions. The first one occurs at about 550 degrees C, and it was revealed by the Laue method. Below 500 degrees C, the water molecules were partially expelled without changing the crystal structure. A fact that supports this statement is the sequential disappearance of the water bands at 1400 and 1900 nm by thermal treatment. The second conversion takes place below 939 degrees C. Moreover, at 972 degrees C a phase change to the willemite mineral (alpha-Zn(2)SiO(4)) has been observed. This last conversion was confirmed by the power XRD. In addition, natural hemimorphite displayed a high pyroelectricity, which is related both to the absence of inverse centre and to the presence of molecular water and hydroxyl groups in the crystal structure.

This paper proposes a method to locate and track people by combining evidence from multiple cameras using the homography constraint. The proposed method use foreground pixels from simple background subtraction to compute evidence of the location of people on a reference ground plane. The algorithm computes the amount of support that basically corresponds to the ""foreground mass"" above each pixel. Therefore, pixels that correspond to ground points have more support. The support is normalized to compensate for perspective effects and accumulated on the reference plane for all camera views. The detection of people on the reference plane becomes a search for regions of local maxima in the accumulator. Many false positives are filtered by checking the visibility consistency of the detected candidates against all camera views. The remaining candidates are tracked using Kalman filters and appearance models. Experimental results using challenging data from PETS`06 show good performance of the method in the presence of severe occlusion. Ground truth data also confirms the robustness of the method. New molecular species HSeCl, HClSe, and SeCl were investigated at a high level of theory, CCSD(T), with a series of correlation consistent basis sets with extrapolation to the CBS limit. Account has been taken for valence-only and core-valence correlation effects, and of anharmonic effects on the vibrational frequencies. HSeCl is 43.25 kcal mol (1) more stable than HClSe. A barrier (Delta G(#)) of 47.20 kcal mol (1) separates these species. Internuclear distances are generally overestimated by 0.008 angstrom in the valence-only correlation calculations. Inclusion of anharmonicity leads to much improved vibrational frequencies. For SeCl, we estimate Delta H(f) (0 K) = 23.96 and Delta H(f) (298.15 K) = 24.64 kcal mol (1); for HSeCl, we had 4.20 and 4.97 kcal mol (1), respectively. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory, with the inclusion of relativistic effects and spin-orbit Coupling, was employed to investigate the nature of the ground and low-lying Lambda-S and Omega states of the TcN molecule. Spectroscopic constants, effective bond order, and potential energy curves for 13 low-lying Lambda-S states and 5 Omega states are given, The computed ground state of TcN is of Omega = 3 symmetry (R(e) = 1.605 angstrom and omega(e) = 1085 cm(-1)), originating mainly from the (3)Delta Lambda-S ground state. This result is contrasted with the nature of the ground state for other VIIB transtion-metal mononitrides, including X(3)Sigma(-) symmetry for MnN and Omega = 0(+) symmetry for ReN, derived also from a X(3)Sigma(-) state.

Multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory, including relativistic effects and spin-orbit coupling, has been employed to investigate the nature of the chemical bonding in the ground state of Tc(2) and Re(2). The Tc(2) ground state is found to be a 0(g)(+) state, with an effective bond order (EBO) of 4.4, and a dissociation energy of 3.25 eV. The Re(2) ground state is a 1(g) state, with EBO = 4.3. Almost degenerate to it, is a 0(g)(+) state (T(e) = 77 cm(-1)), with EBO = 4.1. Experimental evidence also indicates that the ground state is of 1(g) nature. The dissociation energy is computed to be 5.0 eV in agreement with an experimental estimate of 4 +/- 1 eV.
