Previous studies have shown that lipids are transferred from lymphocytes (Ly) to different cell types including macrophages. enterocytes, and pancreatic beta cells in co-culture This study investigated whether [(14)C]-labeled fatty acids (FA) can be transferred from Ly to skeletal muscle (SM), and the effects of exercise on such phenomenon Ly obtained from exercised (EX) and control (C) male Wistar rats were preloaded with the [(14)C]-labeled free FA palmitic (PA), oleic (OA), linoleic (LA), or arachidonic (AA) Radioactively loaded Ly were then co-cultured with SM from the same Ly donor animals Substantial amounts of FA were transferred to SM being the profile PA = OA > AA > LA to the C group. and PA > OA > LA > AA to the EX group These FA were incorporated predominantly as phospholipids (PA = 66 75%: OA = 63 09%, LA = 43 86%, AA - 47 40%) in the C group and (PA = 63 99% OA = 52 72%, LA = 55 99%, AA = 63 40%) in the EX group Also in this group, the remaining radioactivity from AA, LA, and OA acids was mainly incorpoiated in structural and energetic lipids These results support the hypothesis that Ly are able to export lipids to SM in co-culture Furthermore. exercise modulates the lipid transference profile, and its incorporation on SM The overall significance of this phenomenon in vivo remains to be elucidated. Endothelin peptides have been shown to increase cholinergic neurotransmission in the airway. Genetic differences in airway responsiveness to methacholine where reported in mice. The present study compared the airway reactivity to methacholine in C57Bl/6 and BALB/c mice, the involvement of endothelin on this reactivity and endothelin levels in lung homogenates. Whole airway reactivity was analyzed by means of an isolated lung preparation where lungs were perfused through the trachea with warm gassed Krebs solution at 5 ml/min, and changes in perfusion pressure triggered by methacholine at increasing bolus doses (0.1-100 mu g) were recorded. We found that the maximal airway response to methacholine was much greater in C57Bl/6 than in BALB/c (Emax 34 +/- 2 vs 12 +/- 1 cmH(2)O, respectively). Bosentan (mixed endothelin A/B receptor antagonist; 10 mg/kg, i.p., 30 min before sacrifice) reduced lung responsiveness to methacholine in C57Bl/6 (58% at EC50 level) but had no effect in BALB/c mouse strain. This effect seems to be mediated by the endothelin ETA receptor since it was significantly reduced by the selective endothelin ETA receptor antagonist, BQ 123. Immunoreactive endothelin levels were higher in C57Bl/6 than in BALB/c lungs (43 5 vs 19 +/- 5 pg/g of tissue). In conclusion, airway reactivity to methacholine and lung endothelins content varies markedly between C57Bl/6 and BALB/c strains. Endothelins upregulate lung responsiveness to methacholine only in C57Bl/6, an effect achieved through the endothelin ETA receptor. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The magnetic structures of the title compounds have been studied by neutron diffraction. In contrast to the isomorphous RNi(2)B(2)C compounds, wherein a variety of exotic incommensurate modulated structures has been observed, the magnetic structure of ErCo(2)B(2)C is found to be a collinear antiferromagnet with k = (12, 0, 12) while those of HoCo(2)B(2)C and DyCo(2)B(2)C are observed to be simple ferromagnets. For all studied compounds, the moments are found to be confined within the basal plane and their magnitudes are comparable to the values obtained from the low-temperature isothermal magnetization measurements. The absence of modulated magnetic structures in the RCo(2)B(2)C series (for ErCo(2)B(2)C, verified down to 50 mK) is attributed to the quenching of the Fermi surface nesting features.

The reaction of cis-[RuCl2(dppb)(N-N)], dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane, complexes with the ligand HSpymMe(2), 4,6-dimethyl-2-mercaptopyrimidine, yielded the cationic complexes [Ru(SpymMe(2))(dppb)(N-N)]PF6, N-N = bipy (1) and Me-bipy (2), bipy = 2,2`-bipyridine and Me-bipy = 4,4`dimethyl-2,2`-bipyridine, which were characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques and X-ray crystallography and elemental analysis. Additionally, preliminary in vitro tests for antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv ATCC 27264 and antitumor activity against the MDA-MB-231 human breast tumor cell line were carried out on the new complexes and also on the precursors cis-[RuCl2(dppb)(N-N)], N-N = bipy (3) and Me-bipy (4) and the free ligands dppb, bipy, Me-bipy and SpymMe(2). The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of compounds needed to kill 90% of mycobacterial cells and the IC50 values for the antitumor activity were determined. Compounds 1-4 exhibited good in vitro activity against M. tuberculosis, with MIC values ranging between 0.78 and 6.25 mu g/mL, compared to the free ligands (MIC of 25 to >50 mu g/mL) and the drugs used to treat tuberculosis. Complexes I and 2 also showed promising antitumor activity, with IC50 values of 0.46 +/- 0.02 and 0.43 +/- 0.08 mu M, respectively, against MDA-MB-231 breast tumor cells. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Results from infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy and kinetics of singly hydrated, protonated proline indicate that the water molecule hydrogen bonds preferentially to the formally neutral carboxylic acid at low temperatures and at higher temperatures to the protonated N-terminus, which bears the formal charge. Hydration isomer populations obtained from IRPD kinetic data as a function of temperature are used to generate a van`t Hoff plot that reveals that C-terminal binding is enthalpically favored by 4.2-6.4 kJ/mol, whereas N-terminal binding is entropically favored by 31-43 J/(mol K), consistent with a higher calculated barrier for water molecule rotation at the C-terminus.
