The Jaguarao stratoid dacites (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) are limited in areal extent, are comprised of about 3.2 km(3) of preserved erupted material, and outcrop only in areas of the region underlain by mylonitic and ultramylonitic rocks. They are S-type volcanic rocks containing cordierite, orthopyroxene, plagioclase, and ilmenite as liquidus phases, and partially melted granite, gneiss, and migmatite enclaves that are very similar to the Precambrian basement rocks. The Jaguarao lavas have distinct geochemical signatures and Sr-Nd isotopes with respect to other volcanic rocks of the region. Available geochronological data for Jaguarao dacites range between 157 +/- 5 Ma and 139.6 +/- 7.4 Ma. Considering the errors, the younger ages obtained for Jaguarao lavas overlap the 138-128 Ma age of rocks of the Serra Geral Group, and thus indicate that the dacites were erupted prior to the break-up of Gondwana in this region. Petrographic, mineralogical, and petrochemical data, as well as the tectonic context of the Jaguarao lavas, suggest that magma genesis was linked, at least in part, to friction melts. The dacitic magma was generated by partial melting reactions involving biotite breakdown in a dominantly quartz-feldspathic source terrane, leaving a granulite facies residue in subsurface. These melts were probably generated as a consequence of crustal thinning linked to simple shear extension just prior to Gondwana break-up and rifting of the southern Atlantic Ocean. The efficacy of breast-conserving Surgery for the local control of early breast cancer has been repeatedly evidenced. Although immediate reconstruction following breast-conserving Surgery has been described, little information is available regarding surgical management in reoperative settings due to positive margins. We studied the influence of intraoperatively assessed and postoperatively controlled Surgical margin status on the type of breast-conserving Surgery and report our results regarding complications in a reoperative breast reconstruction scenario. All patients were seen by a multidisciplinary team who recommended breast-conserving surgery. According to the breast volume, ptosis and tumor size/location, the patients were also evaluated by a plastic Surgeon, who recommended reconstruction with the appropriate technique. Intraoperative assessment Of Surgical margins was determined by histological examination of frozen sections. The mean follow-up time was 48 months. Two hundred and eighteen patients (88.5%) underwent breast-conserving Surgery and immediate reconstruction. Twelve (5.5%) patients had a positive tumor margin after review of the permanent section. All patients underwent re-exploration. In 1.3%, a second reconstructive technique was indicated and in 2.2% a skin-sparing mastectomy with total reconstruction was performed. Our findings support the important role of the intraoperative assessment of surgical margins and its interference in the selection of reconstruction techniques and negative margins: however, it will not guarantee complete excision of the tumor. Success depends on coordinated planning with the oncologic Surgeon and careful intraoperative management, (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new genus and species of Normanellidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida), Paranaiara inajae gen. et sp. nov., is described from the continental shelf off the northern coast of Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The new genus differs from the type genus Normanella Brady, 1880 and Sagamiella Lee & Huys, 1999 in its presence of lamelliform caudal rami, a maxillulary endopod represented by 2 setae, an unarmed maxillipedal syncoxa, and reduced setation on P2 enp-2 (without outer spine) and P3 enp-2 (with only 2 inner setae). All these apomorphic character states are shared with the genus Pseudocletodes Scott & Scott, 1893, formerly placed in the family Nannopodidae (ex Huntemanniidae) and here assigned to the Normanellidae. Pseudocletodes can be differentiated from Paranaiara by the loss of the P1 endopod and of the inner seta on P2-P4 enp-1, the presence of only 2 inner setae on P2 enp-2 (instead of 3) and only 1 inner seta on P4 exp-3 (instead of 2), the presence of a second inner seta on P4 enp-2 (instead of 1), the morphology of the fifth pair of legs which are not medially fused and have only 3 endopodal elements (instead of 4) in the male, and the well developed caudal ramus seta V (instead of rudimentary). It is postulated that prehensility of the P1 endopod was secondarily lost in the common ancestor of Paranaiara and Pseudocletodes. An updated family diagnosis of the Normanellidae and a dichotomous identification key to the 22 currently valid species are presented.

The whole Valle Fertil-La Huerta section appears as a calc-alkaline plutonic suite typical of a destructive plate margin. New Sr and Nd isotopic whole-rock data and published whole-rock geochemistry suggest that the less-evolved intermediate (dioritic) rocks can be derived by magmatic differentiation, mainly by hornblende + plagioclase +/- Fe-Ti oxide fractional crystallization, from mafic (gabbroic) igneous precursors. Closed-system differentiation, however, cannot produce the typical intermediate (tonalitic) and silicic (granodioritic) plutonic rocks, which requires a preponderant contribution of crustal components. Intermediate and silicic plutonic rocks from Valle Fertil-La Huerta section have formed in a plate subduction setting where the thermal and material input of mantle-derived magmas promoted fusion of fertile metasedimentary rocks and favored mixing of gabbroic or dioritic magmas with crustal granitic melts. Magma mixing is observable in the field and evident in variations of chemical elemental parameters and isotopic ratios, revealing that hybridization coupled with fractionation of magmas took place in the crust. Consideration of the whole-rock geochemical and isotopic data in the context of the Famatinian-Puna magmatic belt as a whole demonstrates that the petrologic model postulated for the Sierra Valle Fertil-La Huerta section has the potential to explain the generation of plutonic and volcanic rocks across the Early Ordovician paleoarc from central and northwestern Argentina. As the petrologic model does not require the intervention of old Precambrian continental crust, the nature of the basement on which thick accretionary turbiditic sequences were deposited remains a puzzling aspect. Discussion in this paper provides insights into the nature of magmatic source rocks and mechanisms of magma generation in Cordilleran-type volcano-plutonic arcs of destructive plate margins. The Itaoca pluton consists of porphyritic monzogranite that intruded the upper crust into low-grade metasedimentary rocks of the Apiai Dornain (Ribeira Belt). Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and zircon U-Pb (Shrimp) geochronology were combined to determine pluton emplacement mechanisms and its chronology relative to the collision structures of the Paranapiacaba (Brasiliano II) orogenic system. Magnetic susceptibility ranges between 4 and 38 x 10(-3) SI, and thermomagnetic measurements indicate multidomain magnetite is the main carrier of anisotropy. The pluton shows an ""onion-skin"" structure roughly elongated to the northeast with its hinge zone including kilometer-wide roof-pendants. Magnetic lineations are variable in orientation in consistency with the dominant oblate symmetry of the magnetic fabric. A distinct NE-trending point-maxima, however, indicates the mean lineation is parallel to the stretching direction of the transpressive deformation that affected the regional host rocks. Prismatic zircon from the monzogranite, both in the core and in the finely-zoned margins, yielded an age of 623 +/- 10 Ma. These results suggest the magmatic fabric recorded the earlier strain increments of the regional shear deformation. It may correspond to the transition from continental arc to collision tectonics of the southern Ribeira Belt. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Marajo Island is located in a passive continental margin that evolved from rifting associated with the opening of the Equatorial South Atlantic Ocean in the Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous period. This study, based on remote sensing integrated with sedimentology, as well as subsurface and seismographic data available from the literature, allows discussion of the significance of tectonics during the Quaternary history of marginal basins. Results show that eastern Marajo Island contains channels with evidence of tectonic control. Mapping of straight channels defined four main groups of lineaments (i.e. NNE-SSW, NE-SW, NW-SE and E-W) that parallel main normal and strike-slip fault zones recorded for the Amazon region. Additionally, sedimentological studies of late Quaternary and Holocene deposits indicate numerous ductile and brittle structures within stratigraphic horizons bounded by undeformed strata, related to seismogenic deformation during or shortly after sediment deposition. This conclusion is consistent with subsurface Bouguer mapping suggestive of eastern Marajo Island being still part of the Marajo graben system, where important fault reactivation is recorded up to the Quaternary. Together with the recognition of several phases of fault reactivation, these data suggest that faults developed in association with rift basins might remain active in passive margins, imposing important control on development of depositional systems.
