CdS is one of the most important II-VI semiconductors, with applications in solar cells, optoelectronics and electronic devices. CdS nanoparticles were synthesized via microwave-assisted solvothermal technique. Structural and morphological characterization revealed the presence of crystalline structures presenting single phase with different morphologies such as ""nanoflowers"" and nanoplates depending on the solvent used. Optical characterization was made by diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy, revealing the influence of the different solvents on the optical properties due to structural defects generated during synthesis. It is proposed that these defects are related to sulfur vacancies, with higher concentration of defects for the sample synthesized in ethylene glycol in comparison with the one synthesized in ethylene diamine. In this work, a 2.0 nm nanoparticle (low limit synthesized system) is compared to possible simplified models: passivated clusters, small (1.3 nm) nanoparticles and sets of plane surfaces. Our density functional theory results suggest that even when geometric aspects are properly described by the simplifications considered, electronic properties might be very different, especially when edge atoms are not properly taken into account in the nanoparticle`s modeling. In addition, we propose a protocol that might help future theoretical descriptions of nanoparticles.

ZnO nanocrystals are studied using theoretical calculations based on the density functional theory. The two main effects related to the reduced size of the nanocrystals are investigated: quantum confinement and a large surface:volume ratio. The effects of quantum confinement are studied by saturating the surface dangling bonds of the nanocrystals with hypothetical H atoms. To understand the effects of the surfaces of the nanocrystals, all saturation is removed and the system is relaxed to its minimum energy position. Several different surface motifs are reported, which should be observed experimentally. Spin-polarized calculations are performed in the nonsaturated nanocrystals, leading to different magnetic moments. We propose that this magnetic moment can be responsible for the intrinsic magnetism observed in ZnO nanostructures.

The evidence of successful growth of Mn-doped PbS (Pb(1-x)Mn(x)S) nanocrystals (NCs) in SiO(2)-Na(2)CO(3)-Al(2)O(3)-PbO(2)-B(2)O(3) template, using the fusion method, is reported on in this study. The as-grown Pb(1-x)Mn(x)S NC is characterized using optical absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance, and atomic force microscopy. The data are discussed in terms of two distinct scenarios, namely a core-doped and a shell-doped nanostructure. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
