Due to its wide industrial use, chromium (Cr) is considered a serious environmental pollutant of aquatic bodies. in order to investigate the ecophysiological responses of water hyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms] to Cr treatment, plants were exposed to 1 and 10 mM Cr(2)O(3) (Cr(3+)) and K(2)Cr(2)O(7) (Cr(6+)) concentrations for two or 4 days in a hydroponic system. Plants exposed to the higher concentration of Cr(6+) for 4 days did not survive, whereas a 2 days treatment with 1 mM Cr(3+) apparently stimulated growth. Analysis of Cr uptake indicated that most of the Cr accumulated in the roots, but some was also translocated and accumulated in the leaves. However, in plants exposed to Cr(6+) (1 mM), a higher translocation of Cr from roots to shoots was observed. it is possible that the conversion from Cr(6+) to Cr(3+), which immobilizes Cr in roots, was not total due to the presence of Cr(6+), causing deleterious effects on gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence and photosynthetic pigment contents. Chlorophyll a was more sensitive to Cr than chlorophyll b. Cr(3+) was shown to be less toxic than Cr(6+) and, in some cases even increased photosynthesis and chlorophyll content. This result indicated that the F(v)/F(0) ratio was more effective than the F(v)/F(m) ratio in monitoring the development of stress by Cr(6+). There was a linear relationship between qP and F(v)/F(m). No statistical differences were observed in NPQ and chlorophyll a/b ratio, but there was a tendency to decrease these values with Cr exposure. This suggests that there were alterations in thylakoid stacking, which might explain the data obtained for gas exchanges and other chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The responses of the ant community to environmental change, from forest fragment to agroecosystems (coffee or pasture) were evaluated in the south of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this paper we analized the interactions between forest and the two most typical agroecosystem from southest Brazil: sun-growing coffee plantation and introduced pasture. We sampled the ant community from five of each agroecosystems, inside the adjacent forest fragment, and on the edge between them. In each site we removed the litter from fifteen 1m(2) plots and extracted the ants using a Winkler extractor. A total of 165 ant species, distributed in 48 genera and 10 subfamilies were recorded. The coffee plantation presented the lowest abundance and estimated species richness. The causes of the changes observed among the areas are discussed.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the occurrence of Salmonella spp. in 15 samples of pork meat cuts (T-bone, shank, sausage and ribs) commercialized in open markets of Pelotas (RS, Brazil) and verify the prevalent serovars, and test the isolates profile of sensitivity to several antibiotics of importance in medicine (nalidixic acid, ampicillin, aztreonam, kanamycin, carbenicillin, cephalothin, cefoxitin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, sulfonamide, tetracycline and trimetoprina). Twelve samples (80%) were contaminated by Salmonella enterica, serovars Infantis, Derby, Panama and Typhimurium. All isolates were susceptible to trimetoprin, aztreonam, ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone and cefoxitin. For the other antibiotics, the pattern of sensitivity varied as serovar. In addition, 39.1% of isolates showed up to be multiresistant.

Host suitability of Avena spp. genotypes to Meloidogyne incognita race 4 The black oat (Avena strigosa), the white oat (A. sativa) and the Algerian oat (A. byzantina) have been widely used as cover crops under succession with soybean, cotton, bean, potato and carrot, which are crops highly damaged by Meloidogyne incognita. The management of M. incognita may have as a component the use of oat genotypes that reduce the nematode population density. Three greenhouse experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the host suitability of five genotypes of black oat (`CPAO 0010`, `Common`, `Embrapa 29`, `Embrapa 140` and `IPFA 99006`), one of white oat (`UFRGS 17`) and one of Algerian oat (`Sao Carlos`) to three isolates of M. incognita race 4 (BA, SP and MT). The black oats increased the population density of the nematode. The oats `UFRGS 17` and `Sao Carlos` reduced or caused a small increase in the population of M. incognita race 4, and neither differentiated from Crotalaria spectabilis. Therefore, the white oat `UFRGS 17` and the Algerian oat `Sao Carlos` should be used in preference to black oats as cover crops in areas infested with M. incognita race 4.

The present study aimed to verify the time course of the effects of environmental levels of urban air pollution toxicity on lung arterioles. BALB/c mice (n = 56) were continuously exposed to selective chambers equipped with (filtered, F) or without (non-filtered, NF) filter devices for particles and toxic gases for 24 h/day, over 14, 21, 30 or 45 days. After exposure, we evaluated the lumen-wall relationship (an estimator of arteriolar narrowing), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and endothelin type A receptor (ETAr) expression in the vascular wall and inflammatory influx of the peribronchiolar area. Concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM <= 2.5 mu g/m(3)), nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)), black smoke (BS), humidity and temperature in both the environment and inside the chambers were measured daily. Filters cleared 100% of BS and 97% of PM inside the F chamber. The arteriole wall of the lungs of mice from NF chamber had an increased ETAr expression (p <= 0.042) concomitant to a decrease in the lumen/wall ratio (p = 0.02) on the early days of exposure, compared to controls. They also presented a progressive increment of inflammatory influx in the peribronchiolar area during the study (p = 0.04) and decrement of the eNOS expression on the 45th day of exposure in both vascular layers (p <= 0.03). We found that after 14 days of exposure, the ambient levels of air pollutants in Sao Paulo induced vasoconstriction that was associated with an increase in ETAr expression. These vascular results do not appear to be coupled to the progressive inflammatory influx in lung tissue, suggesting a down-regulation of vasoconstrictive mechanisms through an imbalance in the cytokines network. It is likely that these responses are protective measures that decrease tissue damage brought about by continuous exposure to air pollutants. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Breast weight has great economic importance in poultry industry, and may be associated with other variables. This work aimed to estimate phenotypic correlations between performance (live body weight at 7 and 28 days, and at slaughter, and depth of the breast muscle measured by ultrasonography), carcass (eviscerated body weight and leg weight) and body composition (heart, liver and abdominal fat weight) traits in a broiler line, and quantify the direct and indirect influence of these traits on breast weight. Path analysis was used by expanding the matrix of partial correlation in coefficients which give the direct influence of one trait on another, regardless the effect of the other traits. The simultaneous maintenance of live body weight at slaughter and eviscerated body weight in the matrix of correlations might be harmful for statistical analysis involving systems of normal equations, like path analysis, due to the observed multicollinearity. The live body weight at slaughter and the depth of the breast muscle as measured by ultrasonography directly affected breast weight and were identified as the most responsible factors for the magnitude of the correlation coefficients obtained between the studied traits and breast weight. Individual pre-selection for these traits could favor an increased breast weight in the future reproducer candidates of this line if the broilers' environmental conditions and housing are maintained, since the live body weight at slaughter and the depth of breast muscle measured by ultrasonography were directly related to breast weight.

Resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs can be an obstacle to a successful treatment of cancer patients in part associated with individual response and differences in the DNA repair system. The Comet assay is an informative test to investigate DNA damage and repair in cells in response to a variety of DNA-damaging agents, including chemotherapeutic drugs. The aim of this study was to assess leukocytes damage after in-vitro cisplatin treatment and DNA repair action using the Comet assay in 20 patients with melanoma and 20 cancer-free individuals. Leukocytes` DNA damage before and after cisplatin treatment, in three different concentrations, was analyzed. The DNA repair capability was investigated after 1-5 h of in-vitro cells growing without cisplatin. The Comet score of the patients` basal DNA damage was higher than that observed in controls, but the difference was not statistically significant (P=0.85). Although both groups had similar Comet scores to all cisplatin concentrations tested and the DNA repair times, the basal DNA damage (P < 0.001) and cisplatin damages (P < 0.005) were statistically lower than the different repair times investigated. Considering the progressive increase in the Comet score due to repair time, the negative results here observed could be associated with the reduced cell culture incubation that should be better evaluated. Considering the mutagenic action of cisplatin on tumor cells and the importance of individual DNA repair mechanisms in the chemotherapeutic melanoma treatment, the peripheral leukocytes could be particularly useful as a tool for DNA repair response identified by the Comet assay. Immune challenges during neonatal period may permanently program immune responses later in life, including endotoxin fever. We tested the hypothesis that neonatal endotoxin exposure affects stress fever in adult rats. In control rats (treated with saline as neonates; nSal) body temperature peaked similar to 1.5 degrees C during open-field stress, whereas in rats exposed to endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) as neonates (nLPS) stress fever was significantly attenuated. Following stress, plasma corticosterone levels significantly increased from 74.29 +/- 7.05 ng ml(-1) to 226.29 +/- 9.87 ng ml(-1) in nSal rats, and from 83.43 +/- 10.31 ng ml(-1) to 324.7 +/- 36.87 ng ml(-1) in nLPS rats. Animals treated with LPS as neonates and adrenalectomized one week before experimentation no longer displayed the attenuated febrile response to stress. This attenuated stress fever caused by an increased corticosterone secretion is likely to be linked to an inhibitory effect of glucocorticoids on cyclooxygenase activity/PGE(2) production in preoptic/anteroventral third ventricular region (AV3V) since stress failed to cause a significant increase in PGE(2) in nLPS rats, and this effect was reverted by adrenalectomy. Altogether, the present results indicate that endogenous glucocorticoids are key modulators of the attenuated stress fever in adult rats treated with LPS as neonates, and they act downregulating PGE(2) production in AV3V. Moreover, our findings also support the notion that neonatal immune stimulus affects programming of stress responses during adulthood, despite the fact that inflammation and stress are two distinct processes mediated largely by different neurobiological mechanisms. Phthalates are environmental contaminants used in the production of plastics, cosmetics and medical devices. Studies on the effects of phthalates on female reproductive health are particularly sparse and mostly restricted to high-dose exposure in rats. In the present study, pregnant rats were treated with 100 mg/kg-d of di-eta-butyl-phthalate (DBP) or only the vehicle (control group), from GD 12 to GD 20 for evaluation of reproductive outcomes and fetal gonads analysis (F0), and from GD 12 to PND 21 to evaluate reproductive development and function on F1 female offspring. Results showed that all parameters were comparable between groups, although there was a significant increase in the fetal weight after DBP exposure. However, the body weight at birth was normal. Based on these data we can conclude that, in these experimental conditions, DBP did not disturb the reproductive development or function of female rats. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Background: It remains unclear as to whether or not dental bleaching affects the bond strength of dentin/resin restoration. Purpose: To evaluated the bond strength of adhesive systems to dentin submitted to bleaching with 38% hydrogen peroxide (HP) activated by LED-laser and to assess the adhesive/dentin interfaces by means of SEM. Study design: Sixty fragments of dentin (25 mm(2)) were included and divided into two groups: bleached and unbleached. HP was applied for 20 s and photoactivated for 45 s. Groups were subdivided according to the adhesive systems (n = 10): (1) two-steps conventional system (Adper Single Bond), (2) two-steps self-etching system (Clearfil standard error (SE) Bond), and (3) one-step self-etching system (Prompt L-Pop). The specimens received the Z250 resin and, after 24 h, were submitted to the bond strength test. Additional 30 dentin fragments (n = 5) received the same surface treatments and were prepared for SEM. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey`s test (alpha = 0.05). Results: There was significant strength reduction in bleached group when compared to unbleached group (P < 0.05). Higher bond strength was observed for Prompt. Single Bond and Clearfil presented the smallest values when used in bleached dentin. SEM analysis of the unbleached specimens revealed long tags and uniform hybrid layer for all adhesives. In bleached dentin, Single Bond provided open tubules and with few tags, Clearfil determined the absence of tags and hybrid layer, and Prompt promoted a regular hybrid layer with some tags. Conclusions: Prompt promoted higher shear bond strength, regardless of the bleaching treatment and allowed the formation of a regular and fine hybrid layer with less deep tags, when compared to Single Bond and Clearfil. Gayralia K.L. Vinogr. is a monostromatic green alga of commercial importance in the southern Brazil, and its cultivation is being considered. This paper reports some basic aspects of the biology of this poorly known genus. Two populations of Gayralia spp., from outer and inner sectors of Paranagua Bay, showed an asexual life history with a distinct pattern of thallus ontogeny. In one population (Gayralia sp. 1), zooids developed an expanded monostromatic blade directly, while in the other (Gayralia sp. 2) zooids produced an intermediate saccate stage, before giving rise to a monostromatic blade. Thalli of the two species differ in size and in cell diameter. The effects of temperature (16-30 degrees C), irradiance (50-100 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1)), and salinity (5-40 psu) on the growth of both populations were assessed. Plantlets of Gayralia sp. 1 from in vitro cultures showed a broader tolerance to all salinity and irradiance levels tested, with the highest growth rate (GR; mean 17% day-1) at 21.5 degrees C and 100 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1). Plantlets of Gayralia sp. 1 collected during the winter in the field showed higher GR, ranging from 5% day(-1) to 7.5% day(-1) in salinities from 20 to 40 psu, and 2.0% day(-1) and 4.3% day(-1) for plantlets collected during the summer. Gayralia sp. 2 from the field showed highest GR at salinity of 15 psu. These results suggest distinct physiological responses of the two species, in accordance with their distribution: Gayralia sp. 2 is limited to the inner areas of the estuary, while Gayralia sp. 1 grows in outer areas, where salinity values are higher than 20 psu. These data indicate that Gayralia sp. 1 has a higher potential for aquaculture than Gayralia sp. 2 due to its larger thalli, higher GR, and wider tolerance to environmental variations.

Matsushigue, KA, Hartmann, K, and Franchini, E. Taekwondo: Physiological responses and match analysis. J Strength Cond Res 23(4): 1112-1117, 2009-The aim of the present study was to determine the time structure and physiological responses during Songahm Taekwondo (TKD) competition and to compare these variables between winner and non-winner athletes. Fourteen men subjects were analyzed. Blood lactate concentration (LA) and heart rate (HR) were determined before and after the match. The match was filmed for the determination of the number of techniques used, the duration of effort and rest periods (RPs), and the interval between high-intensity movements (HM). Post-match LA was 7.5 +/- 3.8 mmol.L(-1), HR was 183 +/- 9 b.min(-1), and HM was 31 +/- 16 seconds. The mean effort time (862 seconds) did not differ from mean interval time (8 +/- 3 seconds). Winners used a smaller total number of techniques, but post-match LA or HR did not differ from that of non-winners. In conclusion, the glycolytic metabolism was not the predominant energy source and the physiological responses did not differ between winners and non-winners. Coaches and sports scientists should prepare a technical or physical training session considering the low glycolytic contribution in this sport, hence the training protocol should involve high-intensity movements interspersed with longer RPs to provide the creatine phosphate recovery, with special attention given to the technical quality of TKD skills and not to higher technique volume during a simulation of matches.

Santhiago, V, da Silva, ASR, Papoti, M, and Gobatto, CA. Responses of hematological parameters and aerobic performance of elite men and women swimmers during a 14-week training program. J Strength Cond Res 23(4): 1097-1105, 2009-The main purpose of the present investigation was to verify the responses of hematological parameters in men and women competitive swimmers during a 14-week training program. Twenty-three Olympic and international athletes were evaluated 4 times during the experiment: at the beginning of the endurance training phase (T1), at the end of the endurance training phase (T2), at the end of the quality phases (T3), and at the end of the taper period (T4). On the first day at 8:00 AM, each swimmer had a blood sample taken for the determination of hematological parameters. At 3:00 PM, the athletes had their aerobic performance measured by anaerobic threshold. On the second day at 8: 00 AM, the swimmers had their aerobic performance measured by critical velocity. Hematocrit and mean corpuscular volume diminished (p <= 0.05) from T1 to T2 (men: 5.8 and 7.2%; women: 11.6 and 6.8%), and increased (p <= 0.05) from T2 to T3 (men: 7.2 and 6.0%; women: 7.4 and 5.2%). These results were related to the plasma volume changes of the athletes. However, these alterations do not seem to affect the swimmers` aerobic performance. For practical applications, time-trial performance is better than aerobic performance (i.e., anaerobic threshold and critical velocity) for monitoring training adaptations.

The physiological responses of sugarcane (Succharion officinarum L.) to oxidative stress induced by methyl viologen (paraquat) were examined with respect to photochemical activity, chlorophyll content, lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities. Thirty-day-old sugarcane plants were sprayed with 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mM methyl viologen (MV). Chlorophyll fluorescence was measured after 18 It and biochemical analyses were performed after 24 and 48 h. Concentrations of MV above 2 mM caused significant damage to photosystem II (PSII) activity. Potential and effective quantum efficiency of PSII and apparent electron transport rate were greatly reduced or practically abolished. Both chlorophyll and soluble protein contents steadily decreased with MV concentrations above 2 mM after 24 It of exposure, which became more pronounced after 48 It, achieving a 3-fold decrease. Insoluble protein contents were little affected by MV. Oxidative stress induced by MV was evidenced by increases in lipid peroxidation. Specific activity of SOD increased, even after 48 h of exposure to the highest concentrations of MV, but total activity on a fresh weight basis did not change significantly. Nondenaturing YAGE assayed with H2O2 and KCN showed that treatment with MV did not change Cu/Zn-SOD and MnSOD isoform activities. In contrast, APX specific activity increased at 2 mM MV but then dropped at higher doses. Oxidative damage induced by MV was inversely related to APX activity. It is suggested that the major MV-induced oxidative damages in sugarcane leaves were related to excess H2O2, probably in chloroplasts, caused by an imbalance between SOD and APX activities, in which APX was a limiting step. Conforme previsões do último relatório do IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel of Climatic Change) em 2007, até meados deste século haverá um aumento na concentração de CO2 na atmosfera podendo chegar a 720 μmol mol-1. Consequentemente haverá uma elevação da temperatura de até +3 °C, o que ocorrerá em conjunto com mudanças no padrão de precipitação. O mesmo relatório sugere que isto poderá acarretar uma substituição gradual da floresta tropical por vegetação similar a uma savana na parte oriental da Amazônia, porém nada é conclusivo. Diante dessas possibilidades, pergunta-se - Como as espécies de árvores que compõem as regiões de alagamento da Amazônia irão responder às alterações climáticas por vir? Apesar dessas previsões serem pessimistas, o alagamento ainda ocorrerá por vários anos na Amazônia e é de grande importância compreender os efeitos do alagamento sobre as respostas fisiológicas das plantas num contexto das mudanças climáticas. Os principais efeitos sobre a sinalização metabólica e hormonal durante o alagamento são revisados e os possíveis efeitos que as mudanças climáticas poderão ter sobre as plantas amazônicas são discutidos. As informações existentes sugerem que sob alagamento, as plantas tendem a mobilizar reservas para suprir a demanda de carbono necessário para a manutenção do metabolismo sob o estresse da falta de oxigênio. Até certo limite, com o aumento da concentração de CO2, as plantas tendem a fazer mais fotossíntese e a produzir mais biomassa, que poderão aumentar ainda mais com um acréscimo de temperatura de até 3 °C. Alternativamente, com o alagamento, há uma diminuição geral do potencial de crescimento e é possível que quando em condições de CO2 e temperatura elevados os efeitos positivo e negativo se somem. Com isso, as respostas fisiológicas poderão ser amenizadas ou, ainda, promover maior crescimento para a maioria das espécies de regiões alagáveis até o meio do século. Porém, quando a temperatura e o CO2 atingirem valores acima dos ótimos para a maioria das plantas, estas possivelmente diminuirão a atividade fisiológica.
