An abnormality in neurodevelopment is one of the most robust etiologic hypotheses in schizophrenia (SZ). There is also strong evidence that genetic factors may influence abnormal neurodevelopment in the disease. The present study evaluated in SZ patients, whose brain structural data had been obtained with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the possible association between structural brain measures, and 32 DNA polymorphisms, located in 30 genes related to neurogenesis and brain development. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood cells of 25 patients with schizophrenia, genotyping was performed using diverse procedures, and putative associations were evaluated by standard statistical methods (using the software Statistical Package for Social Sciences - SPSS) with a modified Bonferroni adjustment. For reelin (RELN), a protease that guides neurons in the developing brain and underlies neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity in adults, an association was found for a non-synonymous polymorphism (Va1997Leu) with left and right ventricular enlargement. A putative association was also found between protocadherin 12 (PCDH12), a cell adhesion molecule involved in axonal guidance and synaptic specificity, and cortical folding (asymmetry coefficient of gyrification index). Although our results are preliminary, due to the small number of individuals analyzed, such an approach could reveal new candidate genes implicated in anomalous neurodevelopment in schizophrenia. We present the case of a 54-year-old female with a previous history of lung fibrosis secondary to methotrexate used for rheumatoid arthritis who was referred to cardiology evaluation due to precordial pain. Echocardiography showed biatrial enlargement with an enlarged coronary sinus and tubular image posterior to the heart. On the coronary angiogram, the right coronary artery was enlarged, and a distal fistula was identified. The patient underwent a contrast enhanced cardiac computed tomography which demonstrated an aneurysmatic right coronary artery with a distal fistula to the right atrium and coronary sinus. As the chest pain did not recur and there was a high risk of the intervention to correct coronary fistula, the patient remained on conservative treatment.

Here we report on 10 male patients with frontonasal dysplasia, cleft lip/palate, mental retardation, lack of language acquisition, and severe central nervous system involvement. Imaging studies disclosed absence of the corpus callosum, midline cysts, and an abnormally modeled cerebellum. Neuronal heterotopias were present in five patients and parieto-occipital encephalocele in three patients. We suggest that this pattern found exclusively in males, most likely represents a newly recognized syndrome distilled from the group of disorders subsumed under frontonasal dysplasia. Craniotubular dysplasias (CTD) are a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders of skeletal development, whose clinical and etiological classification is still much debated. One of the most common form is the autosomal dominant craniometaphyseal dysplasia (CMD) which is associated with mutation in the ANKH gene. In the literature a few families are reported with CMD phenotype that suggest an autosomal recessive (AR) pattern of inheritance. A candidate locus at 6q21-22 has been mapped in a large inbred Brazilian family, but the gene of the recessive form is still unknown. Our data on a female patient with CMD phenotype, born from healthy first degree cousins and displaying homozygosity for polymorphic markers at the 6q21-22 locus, further support the existence of an AR CMD, expanding its clinical spectrum to a more severe phenotype. The southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) was one of the most intensively hunted whales between the 17th and 20th centuries in the southern hemisphere. Recent estimates indicate that today there are around 7000 whales, representing 5 to 10% Of its original population. On the other hand, recent studies estimated that the population that migrates to the Brazilian coast grew by 14% from 1987 to 2003. However, there is no information about sex-ratio for adults or for calves in this region, which is an important parameter for understanding the biology of the species. We present here the first estimate Of calves` sex-ratio of southern right whales found along the southern Brazilian coast, one of the most important wintering grounds for the species. Sex was molecularly indentified for 21 biopsies collected from calves between 1998 and 2002, along the coast of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina States, in southern Brazil. The sex-ratio was two females for one male, however, it was not statistically different (chi(2) test, alpha = 0.05; df = 1) from the expected ratio of 1:1. This result is in accordance with the sex-ratio estimated for the species of all ages using external morphology (and behaviour in formation), (is well as for most species of baleen whales.

Our aim was to evaluate the effects of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) on early cardiac arrhythmias after myocardial infarction (MI) and the impact on survival. Male Wistar rats received repeated doses of 50 mu g/kg G-CSF (MI-GCSF group) or vehicle (MI group) at 7, 3, and 1 days before surgery. MI was induced by permanent occlusion of left corollary artery. The electrocardiogram was obtained before occlusion and then for 30 minutes after surgery. Events and duration of ventricular arrhythmias were analyzed. The levels of connexin43 (Cx43) were measured by Western blot immediately before MI production. Survival was significantly increased in MI-GCSF pretreated group (74% versus 52.0% MI. P < 0.05). G-CSF pretreatment also significantly reduced the ventricular premature beats when compared with the untreated-MI group (201 +/- 47 versus 679 +/- 117, P < 0.05). The number and the duration of ventricular tachycardia were smaller in the MI-G-CSF group, as well as the number of ventricular fibrillation episodes (10% versus 69% in NIL P < 0.05). Cx43 levels were significantly increased by G-CSF treatment (1.27 +/- 0.13 versus 0.86 +/- 0.11; P < 0.05). The MI size 24 hours after occlusion was reduced by G-CSF pretreatment (36 +/- 3% versus 44 +/- 2% of left ventricle in MI group; P < 0.05). The increase of Cx43 expression in the heart may explain the reduced incidence in ventricular arrhythmias in the early phases after coronary artery occlusion in rats, thus increasing survival after MI.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of overstimulation of beta-adrenoceptors on vascular inflammatory mediators. Wistar rats were treated with the beta-adrenoceptor agonist isoproterenol (0.3 mg(.)kg(-1.)day(-1) sc) or vehicle (control) for 7 days. At the end of treatment, the right carotid artery was catheterized for arterial and left ventricular (LV) hemodynamic evaluation. Isoproterenol treatment increased LV weight but did not change hemodynamic parameters. Aortic mRNA and protein expression were quantified by real-time RT-PCR and Western blot analysis, respectively. Isoproterenol enhanced aortic mRNA and protein expression of IL-1 beta (124% and 125%) and IL-6 (231% and 40%) compared with controls but did not change TNF-alpha expression. The nuclear-to-cytoplasmatic protein expression ration of the NF-beta B p65 subunit was increased by isoproterenol treatment (51%); in addition, it reduced the cytoplasmatic expression of I kappa B-alpha (52%) in aortas. An electrophoretic mobility shift assay was performed using the aorta, and increased NF-kappa B DNA binding (31%) was observed in isoproterenol-treated rats compared with controls (P < 0.05). Isoproterenol treatment increased phenylephrine-induced contraction in aortic rigs (P < 0.05), which was significantly reduced by superoxide dismutase (150 U/ml) and sodium salicylate (5 mM). Cotreatment with thalidomide (150 mg(.)kg(-1.)day(-1) for 7 days) also reduced hyperreactivity to phenylephrine induced by isoproterenol. In conclusion, overstimulation of beta-adrenoceptors increased proinflammatory cytokines and upregulated NF-kappa B in the rat aorta. Moreover, local oxidative stress and the proinflammatory state seem to play key roles in the altered vascular reactivity of the rat aorta induced by chronic beta-adrenergic stimulation.

This work investigated the functional role of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) in respiratory burst activity and in expression of the human phagocyte nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase genes CYBB, CYBA, NCF1, and NCF2. U937 cells with a stably transfected repressor of NF-kappa B (IKB alpha-S32A/S36A) demonstrated significantly lower superoxide release and lower CYBB and NCF1 gene expression compared with control U937 cells. We further tested Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed B cells from patients with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with immunodeficiency (EDA-ID), an inherited disorderof NF-kappa B function. Superoxide release and CYBB gene expression by EDA-ID cells were significantly decreased compared with healthy cells and similar to cells from patients with X-linked chronic granulomatous disease (X91 degrees CGD). NCF1 gene expression in EDA-ID S321 cells was decreased compared with healthy control cells and similar to that in autosomal recessive (A47 degrees) CGD cells. Gel shift assays demonstrated loss of recombinant human p50 binding to a NF-kappa B site 5` to the CYBB gene in U937 cells treated with NF-kappa B inhibitors, repressor-transfected U937 cells, and EDA-ID patients cells. Zymosan phagocytosis was not affected by transfection of U937 cells with the NF-kappa B repressor. These studies show that NF-kappa B is necessary for CYBB and NCF1 gene expression and activation of the phagocyte NADPH oxidase in this model system.

In hypertension, left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy develops as an adaptive mechanism to compensate for increased afterload and thus preserve systolic function. Associated structural changes such as microvascular disease might potentially interfere with this mechanism, producing pathological hypertrophy. A poorer outcome is expected to occur when LV function is put in jeopardy by impaired coronary reserve. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of coronary reserve in the long-term outcome of patients with hypertensive dilated cardiomyopathy. Between 1996 and 2000, 45 patients, 30 of them male, with 52 +/- 11 years and LV fractional shortening <30% were enrolled and followed until 2006. Coronary flow velocity reserve was assessed by transesophageal Doppler of the left anterior descending coronary artery. Sixteen patients showed >= 10% improvement in LV fractional shortening after 17 +/- 6 months. Coronary reserve was the only variable independently related to this improvement. Total mortality was 38% in 10 years. The Cox model identified coronary reserve (hazard ratio = 0.814; 95% CI = 0.72-0.92), LV mass, low diastolic blood pressure, and male gender as independent predictors of mortality. In hypertensive dilated cardiomyopathy, coronary reserve impairment adversely affects survival, possibly by interfering with the improvement of LV dysfunction. J Am Soc Hypertens 2010;4(1):14-21. We present the results of searches for dipolar-type anisotropies in different energy ranges above 2.5 x 10(17) eV with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, reporting on both the phase and the amplitude measurements of the first harmonic modulation in the right-ascension distribution. Upper limits on the amplitudes are obtained, which provide the most stringent bounds at present, being below 2% at 99% C.L. for EeV energies. We also compare our results to those of previous experiments as well as with some theoretical expectations. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a survey of some results on ipri-rings and right Bezout rings. All these rings are generalizations of principal ideal rings. From the general point of view, decomposition theorems are proved for semiperfect ipri-rings and right Bezout rings.
