The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) was investigated using PtSnCe/C electrocatalysts in different mass ratios (72:23:5, 68:22:10 and 64:21:15) that were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the particles ranged in size from approximately 2 to 5 nm. Changes in the net parameters observed for Pt suggest the incorporation of Sn and Ce into the Pt crystalline network with the formation of an alloy between Pt, Sn and/or Ce. Among the PtSnCe catalysts investigated, the 68:22:10 composition showed the highest activity toward ethanol oxidation, and the current time curves obtained in the presence of ethanol in acidic media showed a current density 50% higher than that observed for commercial PtSn/C (E-Tek). During the experiments performed on single direct ethanol fuel cells, the power density for the PtSnCe/C 68:22:10 anode was nearly 40% higher than the one obtained using the commercial catalyst. Data from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that the observed behavior for ethanol oxidation may be explained in terms of a double mechanism. The presence of Sn and Ce seems to favor CO oxidation, since they produce an oxygen-containing species to oxidize acetaldehyde to acetic acid. Copyright (C) 2011, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst was prepared in a single step by an alcohol-reduction process using ethylene glycol as solvent and reducing agent and CeO(2) (15 wt%) and Vulcan XC72 (85 wt%) as supports. The performance for ethanol oxidation was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic activity of the PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst was higher than that of the PtSn/C electrocatalyst. FTIR studies for ethanol oxidation on PtSn/C electrocatalyst showed that acetaldehyde and acetic acid were the principal products formed, while on PtSn/CeO(2)-C electrocatalyst the principal products formed were CO(2) and acetic acid.

This paper presents a study of the electrocatalysis of ethanol oxidation reactions in an acidic medium on Pt-CeO(2)/C (20 wt.% of Pt-CeO(2) on carbon XC-72R), prepared in different mass ratios by the polymeric precursor method. The mass ratios between Pt and CeO(2) (3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3) were confirmed by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). X-ray diffraction (XRD) structural characterization data shows that the Pt-CeO(2)/C catalysts are composed of nanosized polycrystalline non-alloyed deposits, from which reflections corresponding to the fcc (Pt) and fluorite (CeO(2)) structures were clearly observed. The mean crystallite sizes calculated from XRD data revealed that, independent of the mass ratio, a value close to 3 nm was obtained for the CeO(2) particles. For Pt, the mean crystallite sizes were dependent on the ratio of this metal in the catalysts. Low platinum ratios resulted in small crystallites. and high Pt proportions resulted in larger crystallites. The size distributions of the catalysts particles, determined by XRD, were confirmed by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) imaging. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometic experiments were used to evaluate the electrocatalytic performance of the different materials. In all cases, except Pt-CeO(2)/C 1:1, the Pt-Ceo(2)/C catalysts exhibited improved performance when compared with Pt/C. The best result was obtained for the Pt-CeO(2)/C 1:3 catalyst, which gave better results than the Pt-Ru/C (Etek) catalyst. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Aquatic macrophytes Salvinia auriculata, Pistia stratiotes and Eichhornia crassipes were chosen to investigate the Cr(VI) reduced by root-based biosorption in a chromium uptake experiment, using a high-resolution XRF technique. These plants were grown in hydroponics medium supplied with non-toxic Cr concentrations during a 27-day metal uptake experiment. The high-resolution Cr-K beta fluorescence spectra for dried root tissues and Cr reference material (100% Cr, Cr(2)O(3), and CrO(3)) were measured using an XRF spectrometer. For all species of aquatic plant treated with Cr(VI), the energy of the Cr-K beta(2,5) line was shifted around 8 eV below the same spectral line identified for the Cr(VI) reference, but it was also near to the line identified for the Cr(III) reference. Moreover, there was a lack of the strong Cr-K beta"" line assigned to the Cr(VI) reference material within the Cr(VI)-treated plant spectra, suggesting the reduction of Cr(VI) for other less toxic oxidation states of Cr. As all Cr-K beta spectra of root tissue species were compared, the peak energies and lineshape patterns of the Cr-K beta(2,5) line are coincident for the same aquatic plant species, when they were treated with Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Based on the experimental evidence, the Cr(VI) reduction process has happened during metal biosorption by these plants. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Hydrogen peroxide was determined in oral antiseptic and bleach samples using a flow-injection system with amperometric detection. A glassy carbon electrode modified by electrochemical deposition of ruthenium oxide hexacyanoferrate was used as working electrode and a homemade Ag/AgCl (saturated KCl) electrode and a platinum wire were used as reference and counter electrodes, respectively. The electrocatalytic reduction process allowed the determination of hydrogen peroxide at 0.0 V. A linear relationship between the cathodic peak current and concentration of hydrogen peroxide was obtained in the range 10-5000 mu mol L(-1) with detection and quantification limits of 1.7 (S/N = 3) and 5.9 (S/N = 10) mu mol L(-1), respectively. The repeatability of the method was evaluated using a 500 mu mol L(-1) hydrogen peroxide solution, the value obtained being 1.6% (n = 14). A sampling rate of 112 samples h(-1) was achieved at optimised conditions. The method was employed for the quantification of hydrogen peroxide in two commercial samples and the results were in agreement with those obtained by using a recommended procedure.

The present study is part of an ongoing investigation into the characteristics of Myxozoan parasites of Brazilian freshwater fish and was carried out using morphology, histopathology and electron microscopy analysis. A new Myxosporea species (Henneguya pseudoplatystoma) is described causing an important reduction in gill function in the farmed pintado (a hybrid fish from a cross between Pseudoplatystoma corruscans and Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum), which is a commercially important South American catfish. From a total of 98 pintado juveniles from fish farms in the states of Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil), 36 samples (36.7%) exhibited infection of the gill filaments. infection was intense, with several plasmodia occurring on a same gill filament. The plasmodia were white and measured up to 0.5 mm in length; mature spores were ellipsoidal in the frontal view, measuring 33.2 +/- 1.9 mu m in total length, 10.4 +/- 0.6 mu m in body length, 3.4 +/- 0.4 mu m in width and 22.7 +/- 1.7 mu m in the caudal process. The polar capsules were elongated, measuring 3.3 +/- 0.4 mu m in length and 1.0 +/- 0.1 mu m in width and the polar filaments had six to seven turns. Histopathological analysis revealed the parasite in the connective tissue of the gill filaments and lamella. No inflammatory process was observed, but the development of the plasmodia reduced the area of functional epithelium. Ultrastructural analyses revealed a single plasmodial wall, which was in direct contact with the host cells and had numerous projections in direction of the host cells as well as extensive pinocytotic canals. A thick layer (2-6 mu m) of fibrous material and numerous mitochondria were found in the ectoplasm. Generative cells and the earliest stage of sporogenesis were seen more internally. Advanced spore developmental stages and mature spores were found in the central portion of the plasmodia. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

P>Vegetable oils can be extracted using ethanol as solvent. The main goal of this work was to evaluate the ethanol performance on the extraction process of rice bran oil. The influence of process variables, solvent hydration and temperature was evaluated using the response surface methodology, aiming to maximise the soluble substances and gamma-oryzanol transfer and minimise the free fatty acids extraction and the liquid content in the underflow solid. It can be noted that oil solubility in ethanol was highly affected by the water content. The free fatty acids extraction is improved by increasing the moisture content in the solvent. Regarding the gamma-oryzanol, it can be observed that its extraction is affected by temperature when low level of water is added to ethanol. On the other hand, the influence of temperature is minimised with high levels of water in the ethanol.

The aim of this work was to study the effect of the hydrolysis degree (HD) and the concentration (C(PVA)) Of two types of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and of the type (glycerol and sorbitol) and the concentration (C(P)) of plasticizers on some physical properties of biodegradable films based on blends of gelatin and PVA Using a response-surface methodology. The films were prepared with a film forming solutions (FFS) with 2 g of macromolecules (gelatin+PVA)/100 g de FFS. The responses analyzed were the mechanical properties, the solubility, the moisture Content. the color difference and the opacity. The linear model was statistically significant and predictive for puncture force and deformation. elongation at break, solubility in water, Moisture content and opacity. The CPVA affected strongly the elongation at break of the films. The interaction of the HD and the C(P) affected this property. Moreover. the puncture force was affected slightly by the C(PVA). Concerning the Solubility in water, the reduction of the HD increased it and this effect was greater for high CPVA Values. In general. the most important effect observed in the physical properties of the films was that of the plasticizer type and concentration. The PVA hydrolysis degree and concentration have an important effect only for the elongation at break, puncture deformation and solubility in water. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The selective determination of alcohol molecules either in aqueous solutions or in vapor phase is of great importance for several technological areas. In the last years, a number of researchers have reported the fabrication of highly sensitive sensors for ethanol detection, based upon specific enzymatic reactions occurring at the surface of enzyme-containing electrodes. In this study, the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) was immobilized in a layer-by-layer fashion onto Au-interdigitated electrodes (IDEs), in conjunction with layers of PAMAM dendrimers. The immobilization process was followed in Teal time using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), indicating that an average mass of 52.1 ng of ADH was adsorbed at each deposition step. Detection was carried out using a novel strategy entirely based upon electrical capacitance measurements, through which ethanol could be detected at concentrations of 1 part per million by volume (ppmv). Liposomes have been used as adjuvants since 1974. One major limitation for the use of liposomes in oral vaccines is the lipid structure instability caused by enzyme activities. Our aim was to combine liposomes that could encapsulate antigens (i.e., Dtxd, diphtheria toxoid) with chitosan, which protects the particles and promotes mucoadhesibility. We employed physical techniques to understand the process by which liposomes (SPC: Cho, 3: 1) can be sandwiched with chitosan (Chi) and stabilized by PVA (poly-vinylic alcohol), which are biodegradable, biocompatible polymers. Round, smooth-surfaced particles of REVs-Chi (reversed-phase vesicles sandwiched by Chi) stabilized by PVA were obtained. The REVs encapsulation efficiencies (Dtxd was used as the antigen) were directly dependent on the Chi and PVA present in the formulation. Chi adsorption on the REVs surface was accompanied by an increase of zeta-potential. In contrast, PVA adsorption on the REVs-Chi surface was accompanied by a decrease of zeta-potential. The presence of Dtxd increased the Chi surface-adsorption efficiency. The PVA affinity by mucine was 2,000 times higher than that observed with Chi alone and did not depend on the molecule being in solution or adsorbed on the liposomal surface. The liberation of encapsulated Dtxd was retarded by encapsulation within REVs-Chi-PVA. These results lead us to conclude that these new, stabilized particles were able to be adsorbed by intestinal surfaces, resisted degradation, and controlled antigen release. Therefore, REVs-Chi-PVA particles can be used as an oral delivery adjuvant.

The coating of cotton fiber is used in the textile industry to increase the mechanical resistance of the yarn and their resistance to vibration, friction, impact, and elongation, which are some of the forces to which the yarn is subjected during the weaving process. The main objective of this study was to investigate the use of synthetic hydrophilic polymers, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) to coat 100% cotton textile fiber, with the aim of giving the fiber temporary mechanical resistance. For the fixation of the polymer on the fiber, UV-C radiation was used as the crosslinking process. The influence of the crosslinking process was determined through tensile testing of the coated fibers. The results indicated that UV-C radiation increased the mechanical resistance of the yarn coated with PVP by up to 44% and the yarn coated with PVA by up to 67% compared with the pure cotton yarn, that is, without polymeric coating and crosslinking. This study is of great relevance, and it is important to consider that UV-C radiation dispenses with the use of chemical substances and prevents the generation of toxic waste at the end of the process. The aim of this work is to address the activation process of a high temperature shift (HTS) catalyst, composed of Fe2O3/Cr2O3/CuO, by analyzing it before activation (HTS-V) and after activation (HTS-A) using complementary characterization techniques. The textural and morphological characterizations were done by transmission electron rnicroscopy (TEM) and nitrogen physisorption at 77 K; crystallographic structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD); electronic structure was analyzed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and the chemical composition of the catalyst`s surface was obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The investigation pointed out that the HTS-V catalyst presents good textural and morphological properties, which are not deeply affected by the activation process (sample HTS-A). The iron oxide phase in the HTS-V catalyst is hematite whereas in HTS-A catalyst is magnetite with Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio close to the expected value (0.5). For both samples, the Cr ions seem to be incorporated in the iron oxide lattice with higher concentration at particle surface. In the HTS-V catalyst, the Cu ions have oxidation number II and occupy in average distorted octahedral sites; after the activation, the Cu ions are partially reduced, suggesting that the reduction of the Cu species is complex. The synthesis and self-assembly of tetragonal phase-containing L1(0)-Fe(55)Pt(45) nanorods with high coercive field is described. The experimental procedure resulted in a tetragonal/cubic phase ratio close to 1:1 for the as-synthesized nanoparticles. Using different surfactant/solvent proportions in the process allowed control of particle morphology from nanospheres to nanowires. Monodisperse nanorods with lengths of 60 +/- 5 nm and diameters of 2-3 nm were self-assembled in a perpendicular oriented array onto a substrate surface using hexadecylamine as organic spacer. Magnetic alignment and properties assigned, respectively, to the shape anisotropy and the tetragonal phase suggest that the self-assembled materials are a strong candidate to solve the problem of random magnetic alignment observed in FePt nanospheres leading to applications in ultrahigh magnetic recording (UHMR) systems capable of achieving a performance of the order of terabits/in(2).

Herein, we report a new approach of an FePt nanoparticle formation mechanism studying the evolution of particle size and composition during the synthesis using the modified polyol process. One of the factors limiting their application in ultra-high-density magnetic storage media is the particle-to-particle composition, which affects the A1-to-L1(0) transformation as well as their magnetic properties. There are many controversies in the literature concerning the mechanism of the FePt formation, which seems to be the key to understanding the compositional chemical distribution. Our results convincingly show that, initially, Pt nuclei are formed due to reduction of Pt(acac)(2) by the diol, followed by heterocoagulation of Fe cluster species formed from Fe(acac)(3) thermal decomposition onto the Pt nuclei. Complete reduction of heterocoagulated iron species seems to involve a CO-spillover process, in which the Pt nuclei surface acts as a heterogeneous catalyst, leading to the improvement of the single-particle composition control and allowing a much narrower compositional distribution. Our results show significant decreases in the particle-to-particle composition range, improving the A1-to-L1(0) phase transformation and, consequently, the magnetic properties when compared with other reported methods.
