STM and impedance results of the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed with thionicotinamide (TNA) on gold indicate the presence of defects that increase with the immersion time of the electrode in the TNA solution affecting the SAM electroactivity toward the electron transfer reaction of the cytochrome e metalloprotein and [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) and [Ru(NH(3))(6)](3+) complexes. It was observed that this electroactivity was also affected by the pH of the electrolyte solution. SERS and STM data indicate sulfur coordination to the surface with contribution of the NH(2) group. From the dependence of the TNA surface coverage on the temperature and concentration in solution, thermodynamic parameters of adsorption were determined.

Drilling fluid`s contact with the productive zone of horizontal or complex wells can reduce well productivity by fluid invasion in the borehole wall. Salted drilling drill-in fluid containing polymers has often been applied in horizontal or complex petroleum wells in the poorly consolidated sandstone reservoirs of the Campos basin, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This fluid usually consists of natural polymers such as starch and xanthan gum, which are deposited as a filter cake on the wellbore wall during the drilling. Therefore, the identification of a lift-off mechanism failure, which can be detachment or blistering and pinholing, will enable formulation improvements. increasing the chances of success during filter cake removal in open hole operations. Likewise, knowledge of drill-in drilling fluid adsorption/desorption onto sand can help understand the filter cake-rock adhesion mechanism and consequently filter cake lift-off mechanism failures. The present study aimed to identify the lift-off failure mechanism for this type of fluid filter cake studying adsorption/desorption onto SiO(2) using solutions of natural polymers, lubricants, besides the fluid itself. Ellipsometry was employed to measure this process. The adsorption/desorption studies showed that the adsorbed layer of drilling fluid onto the walls of the rock pores is made up of clusters of polymers, linked by hydrogen bonds, which results in a force of lower cohesion compared to the electrostatic interaction between silica and polymers. Consequently, it was found that the most probable filter cake failure mechanism is rupture (blistering and pinholing), which results in the formation of ducts within the filter cake. (i) The electronic and structural properties of boron doped graphene sheets, and (ii) the chemisorption processes of hydrogen adatoms on the boron doped graphene sheets have been examined by ab initio total energy calculations. In (i) we find that the structural deformations are very localized around the boron substitutional sites, and in accordance with previous studies (Endo et al 2001 J. Appl. Phys. 90 5670) there is an increase of the electronic density of states near the Fermi level. Our simulated scanning tunneling microscope (STM) images, for occupied states, indicate the formation of bright (triangular) spots lying on the substitutional boron (center) and nearest-neighbor carbon (edge) sites. Those STM images are attributed to the increase of the density of states within an energy interval of 0.5 eV below the Fermi level. For a boron concentration of similar to 2.4%, we find that two boron atoms lying on the opposite sites of the same hexagonal ring (B1-B2 configuration) represents the energetically most stable configuration, which is in contrast with previous theoretical findings. Having determined the energetically most stable configuration for substitutional boron atoms on graphene sheets, we next considered the hydrogen adsorption process as a function of the boron concentration, (ii). Our calculated binding energies indicate that the C-H bonds are strengthened near boron substitutional sites. Indeed, the binding energy of hydrogen adatoms forming a dimer-like structure on the boron doped B1-B2 graphene sheet is higher than the binding energy of an isolated H(2) molecule. Since the formation of the H dimer-like structure may represent the initial stage of the hydrogen clustering process on graphene sheets, we can infer that the formation of H clusters is quite likely not only on clean graphene sheets, which is in consonance with previous studies (Hornekaer et al 2006 Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 186102), but also on B1-B2 boron doped graphene sheets. However, for a low concentration of boron atoms, the formation of H dimer structures is not expected to occur near a single substitutional boron site. That is, the formation (or not) of H clusters on graphene sheets can be tuned by the concentration of substitutional boron atoms.

The biological effects of chemical substitution of DNA bases triggered several investigations of their physicochemical properties This paper studies the adsorption behavior of a halogenated uracil, 5-fluorouracil (5FU). at the electrochemical interface of Au(111) and sulfuric acid solution. Upon modulation of the electric field across the interface, four distinct phases could be inferred by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) At negative potentials relative to the SCE electrode, limited by the threshold of hydrogen evolution, no molecular species could be detected by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the reconstructed Au(111)-(23 x root 3) surface, indicating that any physisorbed molecules are randomly distributed Incursion into more positive potentials increases the surface population but doer not form any two-dimensional (2D) physisorbed ordered structure Instead, we observed metastable structures that are only detectable. on surfaces with high defect density At sufficiently high positive potentials. limited by gold oxidation, the molecules are chemisorbed in a (3 x 2 root 3) ordered structure. with the aromatic ring perpendicular to the surface We report the densest chemisorbed monolayer for pyrimidine-derivative molecules (area per molecule 0 14 +/- 0 04 nm(2)). A comparison of the adsorption behavior of uracil derivatives has been made based on recent results of chemical substitution and solvent effects. We propose that pi-stacking is enhanced when halogens are incorporated in the uracil structure, in a similar fashion to what is observed in then crystal structure

This paper studies the selectivity of Well-defined Au and Ag nanostructures as substrates for the SERS, (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) detection of simazine (6-chloro-N,N`-diethyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) and atrazine (6-chloro-N-ethyl-N`-isopropyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine). Our data showed that simazine and atrazine displayed similar SERS spectra when the Au was employed as substrate. Conversely, distinct SERS signatures were obtained upon the utilization of Ag substrates. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and vibrational assignments suggested that, while simazine and atrazine adsorbed on Au via the N3 position of the triazine ring, simazine adsorbed on Ag via N3 and atrazine via N5. The results presented herein demonstrated that the adsorption geometry of analyte molecules can play a central role over substrate selectivity in SERS, which is particularly important in applications involving ultrasensitive analysis of mixtures containing structurally similar molecules.

In this paper we report here new considerations about the relationship between the mass and charge variations (m/z relationship) in underpotential deposition (UPD), bulk deposition and also in the H(2)Se formation reaction. Nanogravimetric experiments were able to show the adsorption of H(2)SeO(3) on the AuO surface prior to the voltammetric sweep and that, after the AuO reduction, 0.40 monolayer of H(2)SeO(3) remains adsorbed on the newly reduced Au surface, which was enough to gives rise to the UPD layer. The UPD results indicate that the maximum coverage with Se(ads) on polycrystalline gold surface corresponds to approximately 0.40 monolayer, in good agreement with charge density results. The cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrated that the amount of bulk Se obtained during the potential scan to approximately 2 Se monolayers, which was further confirmed by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) measurements that pointed out a mass variation corresponding of 3 monolayers of Se. In addition, the Se thin films were obtained by chronoamperometric experiments, where the Au electrode was polarized at +0.10V during different times in 1.0 M H(2)SO(4) + 1.0 mM SeO(2). The topologic aspects of the electrodeposits were observed in Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) measurements. Finally, in highly negative potential polarizations, the H(2)Se formation was analyzed by voltammetric and nanogravimetric measurements. These finding brings a new light on the selenium electrodeposition and point up to a proposed electrochemical model for molecule controlled surface engineering. (c) 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
