In this work we used the conversion process of a precursor polymer into polyparaphenylenevinylene (PPV) at low temperatures in order to control the effective conjugation degree of spin-casted PPV films. The absorption and emission spectra of the films were studied by following a partial substitution of chloride counterions from poly(xylylidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT), used as a precursor, by sodium acid dodecyl benzenesulfonate (DBS), added as a surfactant salt. Upon controlling the DBS amount and conversion temperature (T-c) of PTHT/DBS to PPV films, the band gap of PPV changed from 409 to 506 nm, and 505 to 532 nm, values obtained from absorbance and emission measurements, respectively. Based on these experimental data, we proposed a physical model which represents the chemical structure of PPV as a distribution of conjugated chain segments (like oligomers) alternated by non-conjugated segments (structural defects and/or from the precursor polymer). In this work we studied the properties of absorption and emission line shape of layer-by-layer (LBL) poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) on indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode. To minimize the PPV thermal conversion effects during the polymer processing, we used a less aggressive leaving group in the precursor polymer; minimizing electrode degradation. LBL ITO/PPV films showed the same absorption and emission line shape compared with LBL PPV films deposited on non-metallic substrates (glass). With this analysis we indirectly observe the decrease in the ITO degradation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique was used to analyze quantitatively the microscopic morphology of the film surface. Results indicated that the substrate topology is not affected, to a large extent, by the use of dodecylbenzensulfonate (DBS) ion. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The discovery of an alternative route to convert poly(xylyliden tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT) into poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) using dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) has allowed the formation of ultrathin films with unprecedented control of architecture and emission properties. In this work, we show that this route may be performed with several sufonated compounds where RSO(3)(-) replaces the counter-ion (Cl(-)) of PTHT, some of which are even more efficient than DBS. Spin-coating films were produced from PTHT and azo-dye molecules, an azo-polymer and organic salts as counter-ions of PTHT. The effects of the thermal annealing step of PTHT/RSO(3)(-) films at 110 and 230 degrees C were monitored by measuring the absorption and emission spectra. The results indicate that the exchange of the counterion Cl(-) of PTHT by a linear long chain with RSO(3)(-) group is a general procedure to obtain PPV polymer at lower conversion temperature (ca. 110 degrees C) with significant increase in the emission efficiency, regardless of the chemical position and the number of sulfonate groups. With the enhanced emission caused by Congo Red and Tinopal as counter-ions, it is demonstrated that the new synthetic route is entirely generic, which may allow accurate control of conversion and emission properties. Erbium-doped single crystal fibers, with low phonon energy and fairly high absorption and emission cross sections are interesting laser active media, for compact, near-infrared and/or upconversion lasers. In this work, high optical quality Er3+-doped CaNb2O6 and CaTa2O6 single crystal fibers were successfully grown by the versatile laser-heated pedestal growth technique, and characterized from the structural and spectroscopic points of view. The results indicate that these crystal fiber compositions, which had not been explored so far, offer potential applications, not only as laser active media, but also in other optical devices. The ground state thermal neutron cross section and the resonance integral for the (165)Ho(n, gamma)(166)Ho reaction in thermal and 1/E regions, respectively, of a thermal reactor neutron spectrum have been measured experimentally by activation technique. The reaction product, (166)Ho in the ground state, is gaining considerable importance as a therapeutic radionuclide and precisely measured data of the reaction are of significance from the fundamental point of view as well as for application. In this work, the spectrographically pure holmium oxide (Ho(2)O(3)) powder samples were irradiated with and without cadmium covers at the IEA-RI reactor (IPEN, Sao Paulo), Brazil. The deviation of the neutron spectrum shape from 1/E law was measured by co-irradiating Co, Zn, Zr and Au activation detectors with thermal and epithermal neutrons followed by regression and iterative procedures. The magnitudes of the discrepancies that can occur in measurements made with the ideal 1/E law considerations in the epithermal range were studied. The measured thermal neutron cross section at the Maxwellian averaged thermal energy of 0.0253 eV is 59.0 +/- 2.1 b and for the resonance integral 657 +/- 36b. The results are measured with good precision and indicated a consistency trend to resolve the discrepant status of the literature data. The results are compared with the values in main libraries such as ENDF/B-VII, JEF-2.2 and JENDL-3.2, and with other measurements in the literature.

In this work we propose a simple model for the total proton-air cross section, which is an improvement of the minijet model with the inclusion of a window in the p(T)-spectrum associated to the saturation physics. Our approach introduces a natural cutoff for the perturbative calculations which modifies the energy behavior of this component. The saturated component is calculated with a dipole model. The results are compared with experimental cross sections measured in cosmic ray experiments.

Three species of phylogenetically related semi-terrestrial crabs (Superfamily Grapsoidea - Sesarma rectum, Goniopsis cruentata and Neohelice granulata (formerly: Chasmagnathus granulatus) with different degrees of terrestriality were studied to quantify the accumulation of copper (Cu) in hemolymph, gills, hepatopancreas and antennal gland, and its excretion through the faeces. These crabs were fed for 15 days practical diets containing 0 (A), 0.5 (B), 1.0 (C), and 1.5% (D) of added CuCl2 (corresponding to 0, 0.2, 0.5 and 0.7% of Cu2+, respectively). The amount of food ingested was directly proportional to the degree of terrestriality: S. rectum, the most terrestrial species, ate around 2-3 times more than the other crabs, whereas G. cruentata ate 1.5-2 times more than N. granulata, the least terrestrial. The amount of Cu excreted in the feces was proportional to Cu ingestion, and was 76.8% and 64.2% higher for Sesarma fed diet D compared to G. cruentata and N. granulata, respectively. Sesarma also displayed higher Cu concentration in the haemolymph, gills and antennal glands, but not in the hepatopancreas. A detoxifying mechanism followed by elimination was probably present at this last organ, preventing Cu accumulation. More terrestrial crabs, such as Sesarma, may accumulate more Cu in hemolymph and tissues, showing a correlation between metal accumulation and increased terrestriality. In this aspect, contaminated feed sources with Cu may have more impact in conservation of terrestrial crabs. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The absorption threshold in EuTe and EuSe was investigated as a function of applied magnetic field in the Faraday geometry. A well-resolved doublet of sharp dichroic lines was observed when the magnetic field induced ferromagnetic alignment of the spins in the crystal lattice. In contrast, at zero magnetic field only a broad and featureless absorption onset is seen. These results are fully explained in terms of a model of electronic transitions between localized states at the Eu lattice site and a tight-binding conduction band, which incorporates the formation of spin domains. Based on this model, predictions are made concerning the possibility of inducing magnetization of the spin lattices by illuminating the material with circularly polarized light.

This work describes the covalent grafting of 3,4,9,10-perylenediimides (PDI), which are fluorescent dyes with very interesting optical properties, onto the walls of mesoporous molecular sieves MCM-41 and SBA-15. The mesoporous materials were first treated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) in anhydrous toluene, generating amine-containing surfaces. The amine-containing materials were then reacted with 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCA), generating surface-grafted PDI. Infrared spectra of the materials showed that the reaction with amino groups took place at both anhydride ends of the PTCA molecule, resulting in surface attached diimides. No sign of unreacted anhydride groups were found. The new materials, designated as MCMN2PDI and SBAN(2)PDI, presented absorption and emission spectra corresponding to weakly coupled PDI chromophores, in contrast to the strongly coupled rings usually found in solid PDI samples. The materials showed a red fluorescence, which could be observed by the naked eye under UV irradiation or with a fluorescence microscope. The PDI-modified mesoporous materials showed electrical conductivity when pressed into a pellet. The results presented here show that the new materials are potentially useful in the design of nanowires. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The minimum energy path along the lowest-lying pi pi* excited state of 2-aminopurine was calculated to elucidate the mechanisms of radiationless decay and emission in water. The sequential Monte Carlo quantum mechanics approach with a multiconfigurational and perturbative description of the wave function was employed to compute the minimum, transition state, and conical intersection. It was found that the barrier in the potential energy surface to access the conical intersection funnel increases in aqueous environment, making the system prone to enlarge the emission yield. These results rationalize the observed enhancement of emission in 2-aminopurine upon increasing of the solvent polarity. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The aim of the present work was to investigate the toughening of phenolic thermoset and its composites reinforced with sisal fibers, using hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene rubber (HTPB) as both impact modifier and coupling agent. Substantial increase in the impact strength of the thermoset was achieved by the addition 10% of HTPB. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the material with 15% HTPB content revealed the formation of some rubber aggregates that reduced the efficiency of the toughening mechanism. In composites, the toughening effect was observed only when 2.5% of HTPB was added. The rubber aggregates were found located mainly at the matrix-fiber interface suggesting that HTPB could be used as coupling agent between the sisal fibers and the phenolic matrix. A composite reinforced with sisal fibers pre-impregnated with HTPB was then prepared; its SEM images showed the formation of a thin coating of HTPB on the surface of the fibers. The ability of HTBP as coupling agent between sisal fibers and phenolic matrix was then investigated by preparing a composite reinforced with sisal fibers pre-treated with HTPB. As revealed by its SEM images, the HTPB pre-treatment of the fibers resulted on the formation of a thin coating of HTPB on the surface of the fibers, which provided better compatibility between the fibers and the matrix at their interface, resulting in a material with low water absorption capacity and no loss of impact strength. The magnetic response of the near-band-edge optical properties is studied in EuTe layers. In several magneto-optical experiments, the absorption and emission are described as well as the related Stokes shift. Specifically, we present the first experimental report of the photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectrum in Faraday configuration. The PLE spectra shows to be related with the absorption spectra through the observation of resonance between the excitation light and the zero-field band-gap. A new emission line appears at 1.6 eV at a moderate magnetic field in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Furthermore, we examine the absorption and PL red-shift induced by the magnetic field in the light of the d-f exchange interaction energy involved in these processes. Whereas the absorption red-shift shows a quadratic dependence on the field, the PL red-shift shows a linear dependence which is explained by spin relaxation of the excited state.
