Quantum chemical calculations were carried out to explain the observed shifts in the absorption spectrum of different azo-aromatic compounds due to changes in the dihedral angle of the azo-group. Our results reveal that the pi-pi* transition presents a hypsochromic shift and an oscillator strength drop upon increase of the dihedral angle. Nevertheless, the pi-pi* transition exhibits the opposite behavior. This effect is attributed to the reduction in the pi-electron conjugation length of the molecule. Experimentally, we performed temperature dependence measurements of the linear absorption spectrum. Both the theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that small energy changes are mirrored in the electronic transitions of conjugated linear molecules. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The solvatochromism and other spectroscopic and photophysical characteristics of four azo disperse dyes, derived from 2-amino-5-nitrothiazole, were evaluated and interpreted with the aid of experimental data and quantum mechanical calculations. For the non-substituted compound two conformers, E and Z, were proposed for the isolated molecules, being the second one considerably less stable. The optimization of these structures in combination with a SCRF methodology (IEFPCM, Simulating the molecules in a continuum dielectric with characteristics of methanol), suggests that the Z form is not stable in solution. This same behaviour is expected for the substituted compounds, which is corroborated by experimental data presented in previous investigations [A.E.H. Machado, L.M. Rodrigues, S. Gupta, A.M.F. Oliveira-Campos, A.M.S. Silva, J. Mol. Struct. 738 (2005) 239-245]. For the substituted compounds, two forms derived from E conformer (A and R) are possible. Quantum mechanical data suggest for the isolated molecules, that the low energy absorption hand of the E conformers involve at least two close electronic states. having the low-lying excited state a (1)(n,pi*) nature, and being the S-2 state attributed to a (1)(pi,pi*) transition. The data also suggest a small energy gap between the absorption peaks of A and B, related to the easy conversion between these forms. For the structures optimized in combination with the applied SCRF methodology, an states inversion is observed for the Substituted compounds, with a considerable diminish of the energy gap between A and B absorption peaks. The electronic spectra of these compounds are quite sensitive to changes in the solvent polarity. The positive solvatochromism is more evident in aprotic solvents, probably due to the polarization induced by the solute. These compounds do not fluoresce at 298 K, but present a small but perceptible fluorescence at 77 K, which seems to be favoured by the nature of the group in the 2 `-position of the phenyl ring. Moreover, such compounds present expressive values for first hyperpolarizability, which implies in good non-linear optics (NLO) responses and photoswitching capability. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Carra sawdust pretrated with formaldehyde was used to adsorb RR239 (reactive azo dye) at varying pH and zerovalent iron (ZVI) dosage. Modeling of kinetic results shows that sorption process is best described by the pseudo-second-order model. Batch experiments suggest that the decolorization efficiency was strongly enhanced with the presence of ZVI and low solution pH. The kinetics of dye sorption by mixed sorbent (5 g of sawdust and 180 mg of ZVI) at pH 2.0 was rapid, reaching more than 90% of the total discoloration in three minutes.

The protonation effect on the vibrational and electronic spectra of 4-aminoazobenzene and 4-(dimethylamino)azobenzene was investigated by resonance Raman spectroscopy, and the results were discussed on the basis of quantum-chemical calculations. Although this class of molecular systems has been investigated in the past concerning the azo-hydrazone tautomerism, the present work is the first to use CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations to unveil the structure of both tautomers as well the nature of the molecular orbitals involved in chromophoric moieties responsible for the resonance Raman enhancement patterns. More specifically both the resonance Raman and theoretical results show clearly that in the neutral species, the charge transfer transition involves mainly the azo moiety, whereas in the protonated forms there is a great difference, depending on the tautomer. In fact, for the azo tautomer the transition is similar to that observed in the corresponding neutral species, whereas in the hydrazone tautomer such a transition is much more delocalized due to the contribution of the quinoid structure. The characterization of protonated species and the understanding of the tautomerization mechanism are crucial for controlling molecular properties depending on the polarity and pH of the medium.

The photocatalytic degradation of Janus Green B azo dye over silver modified titanium dioxide films was investigated by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). An optimized SERS-active substrate was employed to study the photodegradation reaction of Janus Green B. Considering that photocatalytic degradation processes of organic molecules adsorbed on TiO2 might involve either their oxidation or reduction reaction, the vibrational spectroelectrochemical study of the dye was also performed, in order to clarify the transformations involved in initial steps of its photochemical decomposition. In order to understand the changes in Raman spectra of Janus Green B after photodegradation and/or electrochemical processes, a vibrational assignment of the main Raman active modes of the dye was carried out, based on a detailed resonance Raman profile. Products formed by electrochemical and photochemical degradation processes were compared. The obtained results revealed that the first steps of the degradation process of Janus Green B involve a reductive mechanism. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The adductor canal is a conical or pyramid-shaped pathway that contains the femoral vessels, saphenous nerve and a varying amount of fibrous tissue. It is involved in adductor canal syndrome, a claudication syndrome involving young individuals. Our objective was to study modifications induced by aging on the connective tissue and to correlate them to the proposed pathophysiological mechanism. The bilateral adductor canals and femoral vessels of four adult and five fetal specimens were removed en bloc and analyzed. Sections 12 mu m thick were obtained and the connective tissue studied with Sirius Red, Verhoeff, Weigert and Azo stains. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photomicrographs of the surfaces of each adductor canal were also analyzed. Findings were homogeneous inside each group. The connective tissue of the canal was continuous with the outer layer of the vessels in both groups. The pattern of concentric, thick collagen type I bundles in fetal specimens was replaced by a diffuse network of compact collagen bundles with several transversal fibers and an impressive content of collagen III fibers. Elastic fibers in adults were not concentrated in the thick bundles but dispersed in line with the transversal fiber system. A dynamic compression mechanism with or without an evident constricting fibrous band has been proposed previously for adductor canal syndrome, possibly involving the connective tissue inside the canal. The vessels may not slide freely during movement. These age-related modifications in normal individuals may represent necessary conditions for this syndrome to develop.

The molecular architecture of azopolymers may be controlled via chemical synthesis and with selection of a suitable film-forming method, which is important for improving their properties for practical uses. Here we address the main challenge of combining the photoinduced birefringence features of azopolymers with the higher thermal and mechanical stabilities of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) to synthesize diblock- and triblock-copolymers of an azomonomer and the monomer methyl methacrylate. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films made with the copolymers mixed with cadmium stearate displayed essentially the same optically induced birefringence characteristics, in terms of maximum and residual birefringence and time for writing, as the mixed LB films with the homopolymer poly[4-(N-ethyl-N-(2-methacryloxyethyl))amino-2`-chloro-4`-nitroazobenzene] (HPDR13), also synthesized via ATRP. In fact, the controlled architecture of HPDR13 chains led to Langmuir films that could be more closely packed and reach higher collapse pressures than the corresponding films obtained with HPDR13-conv synthesized via conventional radicalar polymerization. This allowed LB films to be fabricated from neat HPDR13, which was not possible with HPDR13-conv. The enhanced organization in the LB films produced with controlled azopolymer chains, however, led to a smaller free volume available for isomerization of the azochromophores, thus yielding a lower photoinduced birefringence than in the HPDR13-conv films. The combination of ATRP synthesis and LB technology is then promising to obtain optical storage in films with improved thermal and mechanical processabilities, though a further degree of control must be sought to exploit film organization while maintaining the necessary free volume in the films. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and layer-by-layer films (LbL) of a PPV (p-phenylenevinylene) derivative, an azo compound and tetrasulfonated phthalocyanines were successfully employed as transducers in an ""electronic tongue"" system for detecting trace levels of phenolic compounds in water. The choice of the materials was based on their distinct electrical natures, which enabled the array to establish a fingerprint of very similar liquids. Impedance spectroscopy measurements were taken in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 1 MHz, with the data analysed with principal component analysis (PCA). The sensing units were obtained from five-layer LB films of (poly[(2-methoxy-5-n-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene]), OC(1)OC(18)-PPV (poly(2-methoxy,5-(n-octadecyl)-p-phenylenevinylene)), DR (HEMA-co-DR13MA (poly-(hydroxyethylmethacrylate-co-[4`-[[2-(methacryloyloxy)-ethyl]ethylamino]-2-chloro-4-nitroazobenzene]))) and five-bilayer LbL films of tetrasulfonated metallic phthalocyanines deposited onto gold interdigitated electrodes. The sensors were immersed into phenol, 2-chloro-4-methoxyphenol, 2-chlorophenol and 3-chlorophenol (isomers) solutions at 1 x 10(-9) mol L(-1), with control experiments carried out in ultra pure water. Samples could be distinguished if the principal component analysis (PCA) plots were made with capacitance values taken at 10(3) Hz, which is promising for detection of trace amounts of phenolic pollutants in natural water.

We carried out experiments of induced birefringence via two-photon absorption in spin-coated films of the conjugated polymer poly[2-[ethyl-[4-(4-nitro-phenylazo)-phenyl] -amino]-ethane (3-thienyl)ethanoate], PAzT, at 680 and 775 nm. This process allows recording in the bulk because of the spatial confinement of the bireffingence provided by the two-photon absorption. The induced birefringence is associated with molecular reorientation caused by the two-photon induced isomerization of the azochromophores attached to the polymer backbone. In addition, the two-photon absorption spectrum of PAzT was measured to help selecting the excitation wavelength for two-photon absorption induced birefringence. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The discovery of an alternative route to convert poly(xylyliden tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT) into poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) using dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) has allowed the formation of ultrathin films with unprecedented control of architecture and emission properties. In this work, we show that this route may be performed with several sufonated compounds where RSO(3)(-) replaces the counter-ion (Cl(-)) of PTHT, some of which are even more efficient than DBS. Spin-coating films were produced from PTHT and azo-dye molecules, an azo-polymer and organic salts as counter-ions of PTHT. The effects of the thermal annealing step of PTHT/RSO(3)(-) films at 110 and 230 degrees C were monitored by measuring the absorption and emission spectra. The results indicate that the exchange of the counterion Cl(-) of PTHT by a linear long chain with RSO(3)(-) group is a general procedure to obtain PPV polymer at lower conversion temperature (ca. 110 degrees C) with significant increase in the emission efficiency, regardless of the chemical position and the number of sulfonate groups. With the enhanced emission caused by Congo Red and Tinopal as counter-ions, it is demonstrated that the new synthetic route is entirely generic, which may allow accurate control of conversion and emission properties. In this work, the electronic and structural characterization of polyaniline (PANI) formed in cavities of zeolites Y (ZY) and Mordenite (MOR) and montmorillonite (MMT) clay having Cu(II) as oxidant agent are presented. The formation of PANI and its structure is analyzed by Resonance Raman, UV-Vis-NIR, FT-IR and N K XANES techniques. In all cases the structure of PANT formed is different from the ""free"" polymer. The presence of azo bonds linked to phenazine-like rings are observed only for PANI-MMT composites, independent of the kind of oxidant agent employed in the synthesis. The presence of Cu(II) ions leads to the formation of Phenosafranine-like rings. The presence of these phenazine-like rings in the structure of confined PANT chains can also contribute to the enhancement of the thermal stability observed for all composites. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. In the present work, nanocomposites of polyaniline (PANI) and layered alpha-Zr(HPO4)(2).H2O (alpha-ZrP) were prepared using two different approaches: (i) the in situ aniline polymerization in the presence of the layered inorganic material and (ii) the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly using an aqueous solution of the polycation emeraldine salt (ES-PANI) and a dispersion of exfoliated negative slabs of alpha-ZrP. These materials were characterized spectroscopically using mainly resonance Raman scattering at four exciting radiations and electronic absorption in the UV-VIS-NIR region. Structural and textural characterizations were carried out using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The polymer obtained by the in situ aniline polymerization is located primarily in the external surface of the inorganic material although aniline monomers were intercalated between alpha-ZrP interlayer regions before oxidative polymerization. Through resonance Raman spectroscopy, it was observed that the formed polymer has semiquinone units (ES-PANI) and also azo bonds (-N = N-), showing that this method results in a polymer with a different structure from the usual ""head-to-tail"" ES-PANI. The LBL assembly of pre-formed ES-PANI and exfoliated alpha-ZrP particles produces homogeneous films with reproducible deposition from layer to layer, up to 20 bilayers. Resonance Raman (lambda(0) = 632.8 nm) spectrum of PANI/ZrP LBL film shows an enhancement in the intensity of the polaronic band at 1333 cm(-1) (nu C-N center dot+) and the decrease of the band intensity at 1485 cm(-1) compared to bulk ES-PANI. Its UV-VIS-NIR spectrum presents an absorption tail in the NIR region assigned to delocalized free charge carrier. These spectroscopic features are characteristic of highly conductive secondary doped PANI suggesting that polymeric chains in PANI/ZrP LBL film have a more extended conformation than in bulk ES-PANI.

The polymerization of the intercalated aniline ions was studied in three different clays, Swy2-montmorillonite (MMT), synthetic mica-montmorillonite (Synl) and pillarized Swy2-montmorillonite (PILC). PANI is formed between the MMT and Syn1 clay layers, being confirmed by the shift of d(001) peak in the X-ray pattern. X-ray Absorption near to Si K edge (Si K XANES) data show that the structures of clays are preserved after the polymerization process and in addition to the SEM images show that morphologies of the clays are maintained after polymerization, indicating no polymerization in their external surface. UV-vis-NIR and resonance Raman data display that the PANI formed in Syn1 galleries has higher amount of phenazinic rings than observed for PANI intercalated in montmorillonite (MMT) clay. No polymer formation was detected in the PILC. N K XANES and EPR spectroscopies show the presence of azo and radical nitrogen in intercalated PAN! chains. Hence, the results are rationalized considering the structural differences between the clays for understanding the role of the anilinium polymerization within the clays galleries. In this work, the use of proton nuclear magnetic resonance, (1)H NMR, was fully described as a powerful tool to follow a photoreaction and to determine accurate quantum yields, so called true quantum yields (Phi(true)), when a reactant and photoproduct absorption overlap. For this, Phi(true) for the trans-cis photoisomerization process were determined for rhenium(I) polypyridyl complexes, fac-[Re(CO)(3)(NN)(trans-L)](+) (NN = 1,10-phenanthroline, phen, or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, ph(2)phen, and L = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl) ethylene, bpe, or 4-styrylpyridine, stpy). The true values determined at 365 nm irradiation (e. g. Phi(NMR) = 0.80 for fac-[Re(CO)(3)(phen)(trans-bpe)](+)) were much higher than those determined by absorption spectral changes (Phi(UV-Vis) = 0.39 for fac-[Re(CO)(3)(phen)(trans-bpe)](+)). Phi(NMR) are more accurate in these cases due to the distinct proton signals of trans and cis-isomers, which allow the actual determination of each component concentration under given irradiation time. Nevertheless when the photoproduct or reactant contribution at the probe wavelength is negligible, one can determine Phi(true) by regular absorption spectral changes. For instance, Phi(313) nm for free ligand photoisomerization determined both by absorption and (1)H NMR variation are equal within the experimental error (bpe: Phi(UV-Vis) = 0.27, Phi(NMR) = 0.26; stpy: Phi(UV-Vis) = 0.49, Phi(NMR) = 0.49). Moreover, (1)H NMR data combined with electronic spectra allowed molar absorptivity determination of difficult to isolate cis-complexes. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The adsorption of the diazo dye Direct Red 23 onto a zinc oxide surface at 30 degrees C in the dark was investigated. The color reduction was monitored by spectrophotometry at 503 run. The FTIR and Raman spectra of the Direct Red 23 adsorption as a function of ZnO concentration were registered. From the PM3 semi-empirical calculations of the atomic charge density and dipole moment of the Direct Red 23 molecule, it was demonstrated that the azo, dye molecule may be adsorbed onto the ZnO Surface through molecule geometry modifications, enhancing the interfacial area causing a variation in the bonding frequencies.
