Objective: To assess the nutritional status and dietary practices of 0-24-month-old children living in Brazilian Amazonia. Design: Cross-sectional study. Information oil children`s dietary intakes was obtained from diet history data. Weight and length Were measured for anthropometric evaluation. Fe status Was assessed Using fasting venous blood samples; Hb, serum ferritin and soluble tranferrin receptor concentrations were measured. Setting: The towns of Assis Brasil and Acrelandia in the state of Acre, north-west Brazil. Subjects: A total of sixty-nine randomly selected 0-24-month-old children. Results: Of these children, 40.3 % were anaemic, 63.1% were Fe-deficient, 28.1% had Fe-deficiency anaemia and 11.6% were stunted. Breast-feeding was initiated by 97.1% of mother followed by early feeding with complementary foods. The dietary pattern reflected a high intake of carbohydrate-rich foods and cow`s milk, with irregular intakes Of fruit, Vegetables and meat. All infants and 92.3% of toddlers were at risk Of inadequate Fe intakes. Fe from animal foods contributed Oil average 0.5% and 14.3% to total dietary Fe intake among infants and toddlers, respectively. Conclusions: Poor nutritional status and inadequate feeding practices in this study population reinforce the importance of exclusive breast-feeding during the first 6 months of life. Greater emphasis is required to improve the bioavailability of dietary Fe during complementary feeding practices.

Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) has had an enormous impact on our understanding of biology and remains a unique tool for multiplying valuable laboratory and domestic animals. However, the complexity of the procedure and its poor efficiency are factors that limit a wider application of SCNT. In this context, oocyte meiotic arrest is an important option to make SCNT more flexible and increase the number of cloned embryos produced. Herein, we show that the use of butyrolactone I in association with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to arrest the meiotic division for 24 h prior to in vitro maturation provides bovine (Bos indicus) oocytes capable of supporting development of blastocysts and full-term cloned calves at least as efficiently as nonarrested oocytes. Furthermore, the procedure resulted in cloned blastocysts with an 1.5- and twofold increase of POU5F1 and IFNT2 expression, respectively, which are well-known markers of embryonic viability. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number was diminished by prematuration in immature oocytes (718,585 +/- 34,775 vs. 595,579 +/- 31,922, respectively, control and treated groups) but was unchanged in mature oocytes (522,179 +/- 45,617 vs. 498,771 +/- 33,231) and blastocysts (816,627 +/- 40,235 vs. 765,332 +/- 51,104). To our knowledge, this is the first report of cloned offspring born to prematured oocytes, indicating that meiotic arrest could have significant implications for laboratories working with SCNT and in vitro embryo production.

Conflicting results have been reported as to whether genetic variations (Val66Met and C270T) of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene (RDNF) confer susceptibility to Alzheimer`s disease (AD). We genotyped these polymorphisms in a Japanese sample of 657 patients with AD and 525 controls, and obtained weak evidence of association for Val66Met (P = 0.063), but not for C270T. After stratification by sex, we found a significant allelic association between Val66Met and AD in women (P = 0.017), but not in men. To confirm these observations, we collected genotyping data for each sex from 16 research centers worldwide (4,711 patients and 4,537 controls in total). The meta-analysis revealed that there was a clear sex difference in the allelic association; the Met66 allele confers susceptibility to AD in women (odds ratio = 1.14, 95% CI 1.05-1.24, P = 0.002), but not in men. Our results provide evidence that the Met66 allele of BDNF has a sexually dimorphic effect on susceptibility to AD. (C) 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The effects of exercise training on systolic blood pressure (BP), insulin sensitivity, and plasma membrane GLUT4 protein content in spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were compared. 16 SHR and 16 WKY male rats, aged 6 months, were randomized into sedentary and trained (tread-mill running, 5 days/week, 60 min/day for 10 weeks) groups (n = 8/group). At baseline, SHR had lower insulin sensitivity than WKY rats, however, there were no differences between WKY and SHR GLUT4 expression. The 10-week training reduced BP by similar to 19% in SHR, improved insulin sensitivity by similar to 24% in SHR, but not in WKY, and increased GLUT4 expression in both animal models. Compared to the sedentary group, there was an increase of GLUT4 in WKY rats by similar to 25% in the heart, by similar to 23% in the gastrocnemius, and by similar to 15% in the fat tissue. Trained SHR presented an increase in GLUT4 of similar to 21%, similar to 20%, and similar to 14%, in the same tissues, respectively. There were no differences between SHR and WKY rats in post-training GLUT4 expression. We conclude that training determined BP and insulin resistance reduction in SHR, and increased GLUT4 expression in both normotensive and hypertensive rats. However, considering the similar rise in GLUT4-induced training in SHR and WKY, it is possible that GLUT4 levels in plasma membrane fraction do not have a pivotal role in the exercise-induced improvement of insulin sensitivity in SHR.

This study reports the results of ab initio electronic and optical calculations for pure socialite crystal using the linear augmented plane wave (LAPW) method within density functional theory (DFT). The calculated electronic structure revealed predominantly orbital characters of the valence band and the conduction band, and enabled us to determine the type and the value of the fundamental gap of the compound. The imaginary part of the dielectric tensor, extinction coefficient and refraction index were calculated as functions of the incident radiation wavelength. It is shown that the O 2p states and Na 3s states play the major role in optical transitions as initial and final states, respectively. The absorption spectrum is localized in the ultraviolet range between 40 and 250 nm. Furthermore, we concluded that the material does not absorb radiation in the visible range. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Two porous mixed valent diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate compounds have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. Crystalline solids of [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl] center dot 3.5H(2)O (tere=terephthalate) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl] center dot 1.5H(2)O (adip=adipate) consist of extended chains in which polymeric layers of multiply metal-metal bonded [Ru(2)](5+) cores are bridged by dicarboxylate ligands in paddlewheel type geometries. Units of [Ru(2)(dicarboxylate)(2)](n)(+) are linked by axial bridging chloride ions generating three-dimensional networks. The polymers loose non-bonded water molecules at low temperatures but do not undergo thermal decomposition below 280-300 degrees C. Both of compounds exhibit high BET surface areas, [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl]: 235 m(2) g(-1) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl]: 281 m(2) g(-1), and occlude similar numbers of mol of N(2) per mol of metal. The terephthalate ligand generated an organized structure with supermicropores (total pore size of 0.24 cm(3) g(-1)) while the adipate ligand led to a mesoporous structure (total pore sizes of 0.47 cm(3) g(-1)) for the corresponding diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate polymers.
