Mentors, students, and the undergraduate medical course: a virtuous circle

BACKGROUND: Mentoring Programs have been developed in several medical schools, but few studies have investigated the mentors'perspective. PURPOSES: To explore mentors'perceptions regarding their experience. METHODS: Mentors at a medical school were invited to participate in an in-depth interview including questions on satisfaction, difficulties, and perception of changes resulting from the program. RESULTS: Mentors' satisfaction and difficulties are strongly associated with students'involvement in the activity. Mentors believe changes observed in students were more related to life issues; for some mentors, there is no recognition or awareness of the program. However, most of the mentors acknowledged important changes in relation to themselves: as teachers, faculty members, and individuals. CONCLUSION: Attendance is crucial for both the mentoring relationship and strengthening of the program. Students involved in the activity motivate mentors in teaching and curriculum development, thereby creating a virtuous circle and benefiting undergraduate medical education as a whole.

The importance of scientific literacy in fostering education for sustainability: Theoretical considerations and preliminary findings from a Brazilian experience

Scientific literacy can be considered as a new demand of post-industrial society. It seems necessary in order to foster education for sustainability throughout students` academic careers. Universities striving to teach sustainability are being challenged to integrate a holistic perspective into a traditional undergraduate curriculum, which aims at specialization. This new integrative, inter- and transdisciplinary epistemological approach is necessary to cultivate autonomous citizenship, i.e., that each citizen be prepared to understand and participate in discussions about the complex contemporary issues posed by post-industrial society. This paper presents an epistemological framework to show the role of scientific literacy in fostering education for sustainability. We present a set of 26 collaborative concept maps (CCmaps) in order to illustrate an instance of theory becoming practice. During a required course for first-year undergraduate students (ACH 0011, Natural Sciences), climate change was presented and discussed in broad perspective by using CCmaps. We present students` CCmaps to show how they use concepts from quantitative and literacy disciplines to deal with the challenges posed by the need of achieving a sustainable development. Academic papers about fight, martial arts and combat sports

The present study had as objective to verify the production of fight, martial arts and combat sports in articles published in the main Physical Education academic journals available in Brazil after the establishment of the CONFEF, as well as analyze the subjects studied in these articles. The subject classification followed Tani (1996)`s proposition concerning an academic structure to Kinesiology, Physical Education and Sport. When considering the 2561 articles published on these journals only 75 (2.93%) were related to Fight/Martial Arts/Combat Sports. It was verified a predominance of studies conducted in the Biodynamic area (40%), followed by Human Movement Socio-cultural Studies (32%) and Motor Behavior (8%). The applied studies were divided as: Human Movement Pedagogy (10.7%), Sports Training (8%), Sports Administration (1.3%) and Adapted Human Movement (none study published). These data indicate: (1) a reduced number of publications concerning these activities, especially those of applied nature; (2) a need to promote inter and multidisciplinary research about this subject.

Clinical trials profile: Professionals and sites

Clinical trial is considered a breakthrough method in medicine and essential to the development of new drugs. Clinical trials that comply with international and national regulations require an appropriate infrastructure and team qualification. The goal of this study was to evaluate clinical trial groups in Brazil: professional qualification, site structure regulatory knowledge and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) adherence. This is a transversal study with investigators (PI) and sub investigator (SI). PI and SI data were initially identified from Curriculum Lattes from National Advice of Scientific and Technological Development. The study participants were submitted to a questionnaire, which was composed of qualitative and quantitative questions. A hundred PI and SI were interviewed. The most representative Brazilian regions were Southeast (68%) and South (18%). The main institutions involved were HCFMUSP complex and UNIFESP among others institutions. Academic graduation is observed in 86% of them and the higher degree is Doctorate (62%). 91% had GCP knowledge although only 74% had formal training. About the team, all of them are multidisciplinary with majority of nurses and pharmaceuticals. 88% had GCP knowledge although only 77% had formal training. 36%, 60% and 44% of clinical trials were in phase II,III and IV. In conclusion, researchers have appropriate skills and knowledge to perform clinical studies however there is still a need for training. The centers where the researchers work, have trained staff and adequate infrastructure for conducting clinical trials phase II,III and IV. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
