Texture is an important visual attribute used to describe the pixel organization in an image. As well as it being easily identified by humans, its analysis process demands a high level of sophistication and computer complexity. This paper presents a novel approach for texture analysis, based on analyzing the complexity of the surface generated from a texture, in order to describe and characterize it. The proposed method produces a texture signature which is able to efficiently characterize different texture classes. The paper also illustrates a novel method performance on an experiment using texture images of leaves. Leaf identification is a difficult and complex task due to the nature of plants, which presents a huge pattern variation. The high classification rate yielded shows the potential of the method, improving on traditional texture techniques, such as Gabor filters and Fourier analysis.

[Ba(1-x)Y(2x/3)](Zr(0.25)Ti(0.75))O(3) powders with different yttrium concentrations (x = 0, 0.025 and 0.05) were prepared by solid state reaction. These powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Fourier transform Raman scattering (FT-RS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray absorption near-edge (XANES) spectroscopies. The optical properties were investigated by means of ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Even with the addition of yttrium, the XRD patterns revealed that all powders crystallize in a perovskite-type cubic structure. FT-RS and FT-IR spectra indicated that the presence of [YO(6)] clusters is able to change the interaction forces between the O-Ti-O and O-Zr-O bonds. XANES spectra were used to obtain information on the off-center Ti displacements or distortion effects on the [TiO(6)] clusters. The different optical band gap values estimated from UV-vis spectra suggested the existence of intermediary energy levels (shallow or deep holes) within the band gap. The PL measurements carried out with a 350 nm wavelength at room temperature showed that all powders present typical broad band emissions in the blue region. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. The influence of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the anodic dissolution of chromium present in UNS S31254 stainless steel (SS) in 0.15 mol L-1 NaCl at 37.0 +/- 0.5 degrees C has been studied, using anodic potentiostatic polarization curves and optical emission spectroscopy. Electrochemical results have shown that BSA has little effect on the transpassivation potential (E-T) and on the passivation current density values. However on the passivation range, BSA diminishes the intensity of the anodic wave seen at about E=750mV versus SCE attributed to Cr(III)/Cr(VI) oxidation. Optical emission spectroscopy results have shown that BSA prevents the anodic dissolution of chromium to occur and minimizes iron dissolution above the transpassivation potential (E=1160 mV versus SCE). Gaudichaudianic acid, a prenylated chromene isolated from Piper gaudichaudianum, has been described as a potent trypanocidal compound against the Y-strain of Trypanosoma cruzi. We herein describe its isolation as a racemic mixture followed by enantiomeric resolution using chiral HPLC and determination of the absolute configuration of the enantiomers as (+)-S and (-)-R by means of a combination of electronic and vibrational circular dichroism using density functional theory calculations. Investigation of the EtOAc extract of the roots, stems, and leaves from both adult specimens and seedlings of P. gaudichaudianum revealed that gaudichaudianic acid is biosynthesized as a racemic mixture from the seedling stage onward. Moreover, gaudichaudianic acid was found exclusively in the roots of seedlings, while it is present in all organs of the adult plant. Trypanocidal assays indicated that the (+)-enantiomer was more active than its antipode. Interestingly, mixtures of enantiomers stowed a synergistic effect, with the racemic mixture being the most active.
