The main aim of this work was to produce fruit wines from pulp of gabiroba, cacao, umbu, cupuassu and jaboticaba and characterize them using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for determination of minor compounds and gas chromatography-flame ionization detection for major compounds. Ninety-nine compounds (C(6) compounds, alcohols, monoterpenic alcohols, monoterpenic oxides, ethyl esters, acetates, volatile phenols, acids, carbonyl compounds, sulfur compounds and sugars) were identified in fruit wines. The typical composition for each fruit wine was evidenced by principal component analysis and Tukey test. The yeast UFLA CA 1162 was efficient in the fermentation of the fruit pulp used in this work. The identification and quantification of the compounds allowed a good characterization of the fruit wines. With our results, we conclude that the use of tropical fruits in the production of fruit wines is a viable alternative that allows the use of harvest surpluses and other underused fruits, resulting in the introduction of new products into the market. Experimental results for the activity of water in aqueous solutions of 10 single polyelectrolytes (two polysodium acrylates, two polysodium methacrylates, three polyammonium acrylates, two polysodium ethylene sulfonates, and one polysodium styrene sulfonate) at (298.2 and 323.2) K are reported. The isopiestic method was employed in these experiments with aqueous solutions of sodium chloride as references. The polyelectrolytes were characterized by three averaged molecular masses determined by gel permeation chromatography. Furthermore, the density and the refractive index increments of the aqueous polyelectrolyte solutions are reported. Although a similar pattern for the activity of water was observed for all systems (i.e., the osmotic coefficient increases with rising polyelectrolyte concentration), the experimental results show that this property depends on the monomer type as well as on the size of the polymer chain. The temperature (varied from (298.2 to 323.2) K) has only a small influence on the activity of water.

The biocatalytic reduction of acetophenone derivatives was exploited by using algal biomass from Bostrychia radicans and B. tenella producing exclusively (S)-2-phenylethanols with high enantiomeric excess (> 99% ee). Bacterial populations associated with algal biomass were identified as the Bacillus genus. This report deals with the first investigations involving the use of marine bacteria associated with B. radicans and B. tenella marine algae for the biocatalytic reduction of acetophenone derivatives.

An inhibitory protein that neutralizes the enzymatic, toxic and pharmacological activities of several phospholipases A(2) from Bothrops venoms was isolated from B. jararacussu snake plasma by affinity chromatography using the immobilized myotoxin BthTX-I on Sepharose gel. Biochemical characterization of this inhibitory protein, denominated alpha BjussuMIP, showed it to be an oligomeric glycoprotein with M-r of 24,000 for the monomeric subunit. Secondary structural analysis by circular dichroism revealed 44% alpha-helix, 18% beta-sheet, 10% beta-turn and 28% random coil structures. Circular dichroism spectroscopy indicated that no significant alterations in the secondary structure of either alpha BjussuMIP or the target protein occur following their interaction. The product from the reaction with reverse transcriptase produced a cDNA fragment of 432 bp that codifies for a mature protein of 144 amino acid residues. The first 21 amino acid residues from the N-terminal and five tryptic peptides were characterized by mass spectrometry of the mature protein and confirmed by the nucleotide sequence. Alignment of alpha BjussuMIP with other snake inhibitors showed a sequence similarity of 73-92% with these alpha PLIs. alpha BjussuMIP was relatively stable within the pH range of 6-12 and temperatures from 0 degrees C to 80 degrees C, even after deglycosylation. The results showed effects against Bothrops phospholipase A(2) activities (enzymatic, edema inducing, myotoxic, cytotoxic and bactericidal), suggesting that alpha BjussuMIP may prove useful in the treatment of snakebite envenomations. Objective: Patients undergoing amputation of the lower limb due to peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are at risk of developing deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Few studies in the research literature report the incidence of DVT during the early postoperative period or the risk factors for the development of DVT in the amputation stump. This prospective study evaluated the incidence of DVT during the first 35 postoperative days in patients who had undergone amputation of the lower extremity due to PAD and its relation to comorbidities and death. Methods: Between September 2004 and March 2006, 56 patients (29 men), with a mean age of 67.25 years, underwent 62 amputations, comprising 36 below knee amputations (BKA) and 26 above knee amputations (AKA). Echo-Doppler scanning was performed preoperatively and on postoperative days 7 and 31 (approximately). All patients received acetylsalicylic acid (100 mg daily) preoperatively and postoperatively, but none received prophylactic anticoagulation. Results: DVT occurred in 25.8% of extremities with amputations (10 ARA and 6 BKA). The cumulative incidence in the 35-day postoperative period was 28% (Kaplan-Meier). There was a significant difference (P = .04) in the incidence of DVT between AKA (37.5%) and BKA (21.2%). Age >= 70 years (48.9% vs 16.8%, P = .021) was also a risk factor for DVT in the univariate analysis. Of the 16 cases, 14 (87.5%) were diagnosed during outpatient care. The time to discharge after amputation was averaged 6.11 days in-hospital stay (range, 1-56 days). One symptomatic nonfatal pulmonary embolism occurred in a patient already diagnosed with DVT. There was no relation between other comorbidities and DVT. The multivariate analysis showed no association between risk factors and the occurrence of DVT in the amputated extremity. DVT ipsilateral to the amputation did not influence the mortality rate (9.7%). Conclusion: The incidence of DVT in the early postoperative period (<= 35 days) was elevated principally in patients aged >= 70 years and for AKA. Patients with PAD who have recently undergone major amputations should be considered at high risk for DVT, even after hospital discharge. Given the high rate of postoperative DVT observed in this study, we now recommend prophylactic anticoagulation for these patients, but further study is needed to determine the optimal duration and efficacy of this treatment. Acute rejection episodes (ARE) are important complications that involve the interplay between mechanisms that maintain graft tolerance and promote rejection. The proinflammatory cytokine interieukin-17 (IL-17) has been implicated in many conditions in humans and mice. In kidney transplant patients, the evaluation IL-17 levels has been performed in only a few patients. We performed a cross-sectional study correlating quantitative IL-17 levels and clinical outcomes. Patients and methods. We studied 19 specimens from biopsies performed in patients (n = 19) who received isolated kidney grafts. ARE signs were present in 9 (47%) patients who provide specimens; whereas, 10 (53%) others showed no signs of rejection. Eighteen healthy control sample IL-17 underwent measurement, all of which were performed by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. We assessed other factors, such as the recipients demographic data, cold ischemia time, HLA mismatches, time elapsed from transplantation to the biopsy, posttransplantation status, antibody panel, donor type, and immunosuppressive treatment. Results. IL-17 levels were clearly increased among samples derived from patients with ongoing rejection (125.7 +/- 27.06 pg/mL) in contrast, to the nonrejection group, (30 +/- 13.32 pg/mL) (P < .05). Healthy controls showed no detectable IL-17 levels. Conclusions. These findings suggested that IL-17 was important in the pathophysiology of acute kidney rejection.

The aim of this study was to determine whether para-chloroaniline (PCA) and/or reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated by chlorhexidine (CHX) alone or after CHX is mixed with calcium hydroxide at different time points. Mass spectrometry was performed to detect PCA in samples of 0.2% CHX and Ca(OH)2 mixed with 0.2% CHX. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to confirm the presence of CHX in the mixture with Ca(OH)2. The samples were analyzed immediately after mixing and after 7 and 14 days. During the intervals of the experiment, the samples were maintained at 36.5 degrees C and 95% relative humidity. PCA was detected in the 0.2% CHX solution after 14 days. The mixture of CHX with Ca(CH)2 liberated ROS at all time points, but no traces of CHX were present in the mixture as a result of immediate degradation of the CHX. (J Endod 2008;34:1508-1514)

By using the NeXSPheRIO code, we study the elliptic-flow fluctuations in Au + Au collisions at 200 A GeV. It is shown that, by fixing the parameters of the model to correctly reproduce the charged pseudorapidity and the transverse-momentum distributions, reasonable agreement of < v(2)> with data is obtained, both as function of pseudorapidity as well as of transverse momentum, for charged particles. Our results on elliptic-flow fluctuations are in good agreement with the recently measured data on experiments.

5-HT(1A) receptor antagonists have been employed to treat depression, but the lack of structural information on this receptor hampers the design of specific and selective ligands. In this study, we have performed CoMFA studies on a training set of arylpiperazines (high affinity 5-HT(1A) receptor ligands) and to produce an effective alignment of the data set, a pharmacophore model was produced using Galahad. A statistically significant model was obtained, indicating a good internal consistency and predictive ability for untested compounds. The information gathered from our receptor-independent pharmacophore hypothesis is in good agreement with results from independent studies using different approaches. Therefore, this work provides important insights on the chemical and structural basis involved in the molecular recognition of these compounds. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Benzene adsorbed on highly acidic sulfated TiO2 (S-TiO2) shows an intriguing resonance Raman (RR) effect, with excitation in the blue-violet region. There are very interesting spectral features: the preferential enhancement of the e(2g) mode (1595 cm(-1)) in relation to the a(1g) mode (ring-breathing mode at 995 cm(-1)) and the appearance of bands at 1565 and 1514 cm(-1). The band at 1565 cm(-1) is probably one of the components of the e(2g) split band, originally a doubly degenerate mode (8a, 8b) in neat benzene, and the band at 1514 cm(-1) is assigned to the 19a mode, an inactive mode in neat benzene. These facts indicate a lowering of symmetry in adsorbed benzene, which may be caused by a strong interaction between S-TiO2 and the benzene molecule with formation of a benzene to Ti (IV) charge transfer (CT) complex or by the formation of a benzene radical cation species. However, the RR spectra of the adsorbed benzene cannot be assigned to the benzene radical cation because the observed wavenumber of the ring-breathing mode does not have the value expected for this species. Moreover, it was found by ESR measurements that the amount of radicals was very low, and so it was concluded that a CT complex is the species that originates the RR spectra. The most favorable intensification of the band at 1595 cm(-1) in the RR spectra of benzene/S-TiO2 at higher excitation energy corroborates this hypothesis, as an absorption band in this energy range, assigned to a CT transition, is observed.
