Aim: To identify how the methodology of Reflection Groups (RG) can contribute to approach social-psychological problems, so often observed as obstacles in PE efforts. The objective was also to verify the contributions from RG to the implementation of ergonomics recommendations, which were a starting point and organized group discussions. Method: A concrete case was used as an illustration, and studied in depth: RG with administration and production workers` representatives from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of a cardiologic hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil. RG are temporary thinking groups, taking place outside the workplace and having delegative and consultive participation. They make use of Operative Groups, an adapted form of tripartite group, activity as an instrumental resource, group dynamic techniques and videotaping. In 2007, 31 meetings took place during paid working hours with 7 groups of different composition, ranging from 1.5 h to 3 h. Results: Additionally to the positive effects in communication and psychosocial environment, RG could also contribute to changes in interpersonal relationships, cooperation, personal and work behaviours. By dealing with aspects which could hinder the explicit task: fears, conflicts, and stereotyped beliefs and behaviours; resistance to change could be broken and group members could learn. RG allowed input about new risks; continuous information and feedback about ongoing ergonomics interventions so that immediate corrective action could be taken. The main form of participation was in administrative, organizational, and psychosocial problems which required a better clarification and identification of their real causes, commitment, and elaboration of strategies and negotiation of different stakeholders in their solution. Conclusion: RG takes advantage of homogeneous and heterogeneous groups, in face to face communication. The interactions in the groups are task-oriented (explicit task) but attaining groups` goals depends on a relational interaction (implicit task). Relevance to industry: Reflection groups can bring important contributions to ergonomics and industry because they favour the discussion, disclosure of problems and incorporation of solutions, enabling interventions in working organization, psychosocial environment and relationships in a collective and participatory approach, promoting health and social integration. Objective: The study compared the prevalence, correlates of functional impairment, and service utilization for eating disorders across Latinos, Asians, and African Americans living in the United States to non-Latino Whites. Method: Pooled data from the NIMH Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiological Studies (CPES; NIMH, 2007) were used. Results: The prevalence of anorexia nervosa (AN) and binge-eating disorder (BED) were similar across all groups examined, but bulimia nervosa (BN) was more prevalent among Latinos and African Americans than non-Latino Whites. Despite similar prevalence of BED among ethnic groups examined, lifetime prevalence of any binge eating (ABE) was greater among each of the ethnic minority groups in comparison to non-Latino Whites. Lifetime prevalence of mental health service utilization was lower among ethnic minority groups studied than for non-Latino Whites for respondents with a lifetime history of any eating disorder. Discussion: These findings suggest the need for clinician training and health policy interventions to achieve optimal and equitable care for eating disorders across all ethnic groups in the United States. GLUT is the major glucose transporter in mammalian cells. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) at GLUT1 promoter and regulatory regions have been associated to the risk of developing nephropathy in different type 1 and type 2 diabetic populations. It has been demonstrated that differences in allelic and genotypic frequencies of GLUT1 gene (SLC2A1) polymorphisms occur among different populations. Therefore, ethnic differences in distribution of GLUT1 gene polymorphisms may be an important factor in determining gene-disease association. In this study, we investigated the XbaIG > T and HaeIIIT > C polymorphisms in six different Brazilian populations: 102 individuals from Salvador population (Northern Brazil), 56 European descendants from Joinville (South Brazil), 85 Indians from Tiryi tribe (North Brazil) and 127 samples from Southern Brazil: 44 from European descendants, 42 from African descendants and 41 from Japanese descendants. Genotype frequencies from both sites did not differ significantly from those expected under the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. We verified that the allele frequencies of both polymorphisms were heterogeneous in these six Brazilian ethnic groups.

To investigate the role of non-protein sulfhydryl groups (NP-SH) and leukocyte adhesion in the protective effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli against indomethacin-induced gastropathy. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: saline, LPS, saline + indomethacin and LPS + indomethacin, with six rats in each group. Rats were pretreated with LPS (300 mu g/kg, by intravenous) or saline. After 6 h, indomethacin was administered (20 mg/kg, by gavage). Three hours after treatments, rats were killed. Macroscopic gastric damage, gastric NP-SH concentration, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and mesenteric leukocyte adhesion (intravital microscopy) were assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance followed by the Newman-Keuls test. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. LPS reduced the gastric damage, gastric MPO activity and increased gastric NP-SH concentration in indomethacin-induced gastropathy. LPS alone increased gastric NP-SH when compared to saline. Indomethacin increased leukocyte adhesion when compared to the saline, and LPS reduced indomethacin-induced leukocyte adhesion. In addition, LPS alone did not change leukocyte adhesion, when compared to the saline. LPS protective effect against indomethacin-induced gastropathy is mediated by an increase in the NP-SH and a decrease in leukocyte-endothelial adhesion.

The research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD) are used for the classification of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Surface electromyography of the right and left masseter and temporalis muscles was performed during Maximum teeth clenching in 103 TMD patients subdivided according to the RDC/TMD into 3 non-overlapping groups: (a) 25 myogenous; (b) 61 arthrogenous; and (c) 17 psycogenous patients. Thirty-two control subjects matched for sex and age were also measured. During clenching, standardized total muscle activities (electromyographic potentials over time) significantly differed: 131.7 mu V/mu V s % in the normal subjects, 117.6 mu V/mu V s % in the myogenous patients, 105.3 mu V/mu V s % in the arthrogenous patients, 88.7 mu V/mu V s % in the psycogenous patients (p < 0.001, analysis of covariance). Symmetry in the temporalis muscles was larger in normal subjects (86.3%) and in myogenous patients (84.9%) than in arthrogenous (82.7%), and psycogenous patients (80.5%) (p=0.041). No differences were found for masseter muscle symmetry and torque coefficient (p>0.05). Surface electromyography of the masticatory muscles allowed an objective discrimination among different RDC/TMD subgroups. This evaluation could assist conventional clinical assessments.
