Preparation methods can profoundly affect the structural and electrochemical properties of electrocatalytic coatings. In this investigation, RuO(2)-Ta(2)O(5) thin films containing between 10 and 90 at.% Ru were prepared by the Pechini-Adams method. These coatings were electrochemically and physically characterized by cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The composition and morphology of the oxide were investigated before and after accelerated life tests (ALT) by EDX and SEM. SEM results indicate typical mud-flat-cracking morphology for the majority of the films. High resolution SEMs reveal that pure oxide phases exhibit nanoporosity while binary compositions display a very compact structure. EDX analyses reveal considerable amounts of Ru in the coating even after total deactivation. XRD indicated a rutile-type structure for RuO(2) and orthorhombic structure for Ta(2)O(5). XPS data demonstrate that the binding energy of Ta is affected by Ru addition in the thin films, but the binding energy of Ru is not likewise influenced by Ta. The stability of the electrodes was evaluated by ALT performed at 750 mA cm(-2) in 80 degrees C 0.5 mol dm(-3) H(2)SO(4). The performance of electrodes prepared by the Pechini-Adams method is 100% better than that of electrodes prepared by standard thermal decomposition.

A multilayer organic film containing poly(acrylic acid) and chitosan was fabricated on a metallic support by means of the layer-by-layer technique. This film was used as a template for calcium carbonate crystallization and presents two possible binding sites where the nucleation may be initiated, either calcium ions acting as counterions of the polyelectrolyte or those trapped in the template gel network formed by the polyelectrolyte chains. Calcium carbonate formation was carried out by carbon dioxide diffusion, where CO, was generated from ammonium carbonate decomposition. The CaCO3 nanocrystals obtained, formed a dense, homogeneous, and continuous film. Vaterite and calcite CaCO3 crystalline forms were detected. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Different compositions of Pt, PtNi, PtSn, and PtSnNi electrocatalysts supported on carbon Vulcan XC-72 were prepared through thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors. The nanoparticles were characterized by morphological and structural analyses (XRD, TEM, and EDX). XRD results revealed a face-centered cubic structure for platinum, and there was evidence that Ni and Sn atoms are incorporated into the Pt structure. The electrochemical investigation was carried out in slightly acidic medium (H(2)SO(4) 0.05 mol L(-1)), in the absence and in the presence of ethanol. Addition of Ni to Pt/C and PtSn/C catalysts significantly shifted the onset of ethanol and CO oxidations toward lower potentials, thus enhancing the catalytic activity, especially in the case of the ternary PtSnNi/C composition. Electrolysis of ethanol solutions at 0.4 V us. RHE allowed for determination of acetaldehyde and acetic acid as the reaction products, as detected by HPLC analysis. Due to the high concentration of ethanol employed in the electrolysis experiments (1.0 mol L(-1)), no formation of CO(2) was observed. Copyright (C) 2010, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. The influence of the preparation method on the structural properties of the RuO(2)-Ta(2)O(5) system was investigated. Both thin films on Ti substrates and powder samples of nominal composition Ti/RuO(2)-Ta(2)O(5) (Ru:Ta = 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 30:70, and 0:100 at.%) were prepared through thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors (DPP). The thin films and powder samples were investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). XANES analyses showed that Ru and Ta are present in the Ru(IV) and Ta(V) oxidation states. EXAFS signals of all the samples were analyzed, to obtain the average bond length (r), coordination number, and the Debye-Waller factor (sigma(2)) for each Ru-O, Ru-Ru, Ta-O nearest-neighbor. The first shell Ru-O distance was found at 1.91-1.92 angstrom with coordination number of 1.8-2.1, and at 2.01-2.02 angstrom with coordination number of 3.9-4.1. The Ta-O distance obtained for all the samples and in both modes (transmission and fluorescence) had significantly different values from the theoretical ones. The results revealed that the local structure around both the Ru and Ta sites are similar, and that they consist of distorted M-O(6) octahedra (where M = Ru or Ta). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Semi-interpenetrating networks (Semi-IPNs) with different compositions were prepared from poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by the sol-gel process in this study. The characterization of the PDMS/PVA semi-IPN was carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and swelling measurements. The presence of PVA domains dispersed in the PDMS network disrupted the network and allowed PDMS to crystallize, as observed by the crystallization and melting peaks in the DSC analyses. Because of the presence of hydrophilic (-OH) and hydrophobic (Si-(CH(3))(2)) domains, there was an appropriate hydrophylic/hydrophobic balance in the semi-IPNs prepared, which led to a maximum equilibrium water content of similar to 14 wt % without a loss in the ability to swell less polar solvents. Gas-phase dissociation pathways of deprotonated 1,4-naphthoquinone (NQ) derivatives have been investigated by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). The major decomposition routes have been elucidated on the basis of quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level. Deprotonation sites have been indicated by analysis of natural charges and gas-phase acidity. NQ anions underwent an interesting reaction under collision-induced dissociation conditions, which resulted in the radical elimination of the lateral chain, in contrast with the even-electron rule. Possible pathways have been suggested, and their mechanisms have been elucidated on the basis of Gibbs energy and enthalpy values for the anions previously described at each pathway. In this work we report the adsorption of phenylalanine (Phe) on Magnesium Aluminum Layered Double Hydroxides (Mg-Al-CO(3)-LDH) at two different temperatures (298 and 310 K) and under two distinct ionic strength conditions (with and without the addition 0.1 M of NaCl). The adsorption isotherms exhibit the same profile in all conditions, and they only differ in the amount of removed Phe. At lower ionic strength, the isotherms are almost identical at both temperatures, except for the last points, where the increase in temperature causes a decrease in the amount of adsorbed Phe. An increase in ionic strength results in a decrease in Phe adsorption. The electrokinetic potential decreases as the amount of adsorbed Phe increases, and only positive values are observed. This indicates that the surface of the adsorbent is not totally neutralized and suggests that more Phe could be removed by adsorption. The presence of Phe on the solid is confirmed by FTIR spectra, which present the specific bands assigned to Phe. The hydrophobicity of the amino acid probably contributes to its extraction, thus enabling the removal of a great amount of Phe. In conclusion, LDH is potentially applicable in the removal of Phe from wastewater.

A new gold(I) complex with 2-mercaptothiazoline (MTZ) with the coordination formula [AuCN(C(3)H(5)NS(2))] was synthesized and characterized by chemical and spectroscopic measurements, OFT studies and biological assays. Infrared (IR) and (1)H, (13)C and (15)N nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic measurements indicate coordination of the ligand to gold(I) through the nitrogen atom. Studies based on OFT confirmed nitrogen coordination to gold(I) as a minimum of the potential energy surface with calculations of the hessians showing no imaginary frequencies. Thermal decomposition starts at temperatures near 160 degrees C, leading to the formation of Au as the final residue at 1000 degrees C. The gold(I) complex with 2-mercaptothiazoline (Au-MTZ) is soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and is insoluble in water, methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile and hexane. The antibacterial activities of the Au-MTZ complex were evaluated by an antibiogram assay using the disc diffusion method. The compound showed an effective antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram-negative) bacterial cells. Biological analysis for evaluation of the cytotoxic effect of the Au-MTZ complex was performed using HeLa cells derived from human cervical adenocarcinoma. The complex presented a potent cytotoxic activity, inducing 85% of cell death at a concentration of 2.0 mu mol L(-1). (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Methanol is an alcohol which is metabolized to folmaldehyde in humans. It is a very toxic substance, responsible for blindness in cases of methanol intoxication. This study shows the production of methanol when aspartame is used to sweeten coffee brew. The temperature versus pH binomium was also tested. When assayed at 90 degrees C coffee brew+aspartame and aspartame solution showed an increase in methanol release of 17.8 and 19.3%, respectively, as compared with coffee brew. At 180 degrees C, the increase was 32.5 and 26.3%, respectively. Our data revealed a protective effect of the pH of coffee on the degradation of aspartame and formation of methanol; an important fact, mainly for specific populations that use aspartame, like diabetics.

Trichophyton rubrum is a dermatophyte responsible for the majority of human superficial mycoses. The functional expression of proteins important for the initial step and the maintenance of the infection process were identified previously in T. rubrum by subtraction suppression hybridization after growth in the presence of keratin. In this study, sequences similar to genes encoding the multidrug-resistance ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter, copper ATPase, the major facilitator superfamily and a permease were isolated, and used in Northern blots to monitor the expression of the genes, which were upregulated in the presence of keratin. A sequence identical to the TruMDR2 gene, encoding an ABC transporter in T rubrum, was isolated in these experiments, and examination of a T rubrum Delta TruMDR2 mutant showed a reduction in infecting activity, characterized by low growth on human nails compared with the wild-type strain. The high expression levels of transporter genes by T. rubrum in mimetic infection and the reduction in virulence of the Delta TruMDR2 mutant in a disease model in vitro suggest that transporters are involved in T. rubrum pathogenicity.
