The electronic properties of liquid ammonia are investigated by a sequential molecular dynamics/quantum mechanics approach. Quantum mechanics calculations for the liquid phase are based on a reparametrized hybrid exchange-correlation functional that reproduces the electronic properties of ammonia clusters [(NH(3))(n); n=1-5]. For these small clusters, electron binding energies based on Green's function or electron propagator theory, coupled cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations, and density functional theory (DFT) are compared. Reparametrized DFT results for the dipole moment, electron binding energies, and electronic density of states of liquid ammonia are reported. The calculated average dipole moment of liquid ammonia (2.05 +/- 0.09 D) corresponds to an increase of 27% compared to the gas phase value and it is 0.23 D above a prediction based on a polarizable model of liquid ammonia [Deng , J. Chem. Phys. 100, 7590 (1994)]. Our estimate for the ionization potential of liquid ammonia is 9.74 +/- 0.73 eV, which is approximately 1.0 eV below the gas phase value for the isolated molecule. The theoretical vertical electron affinity of liquid ammonia is predicted as 0.16 +/- 0.22 eV, in good agreement with the experimental result for the location of the bottom of the conduction band (-V(0)=0.2 eV). Vertical ionization potentials and electron affinities correlate with the total dipole moment of ammonia aggregates. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

We investigate the influence of couplings among continuum states in collisions of weakly bound nuclei. For this purpose, we compare cross sections for complete fusion, breakup, and elastic scattering evaluated by continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) calculations, including and not including these couplings. In our study, we discuss this influence in terms of the polarization potentials that reproduces the elastic wave function of the coupled channel method in single channel calculations. We find that the inclusion of couplings among continuum states renders the real part of the polarization potential more repulsive, whereas it leads to weaker absorption to the breakup channel. We show that the noninclusion of continuum-continuum couplings in CDCC calculations may lead to qualitative and quantitative wrong conclusions.

The Jensen theorem is used to derive inequalities for semiclassical tunneling probabilities for systems involving several degrees of freedom. These Jensen inequalities are used to discuss several aspects of sub-barrier heavy-ion fusion reactions. The inequality hinges on general convexity properties of the tunneling coefficient calculated with the classical action in the classically forbidden region.

The study of spectral behavior of networks has gained enthusiasm over the last few years. In particular, random matrix theory (RMT) concepts have proven to be useful. In discussing transition from regular behavior to fully chaotic behavior it has been found that an extrapolation formula of the Brody type can be used. In the present paper we analyze the regular to chaotic behavior of small world (SW) networks using an extension of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. This RMT ensemble, coined the deformed Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (DGOE), supplies a natural foundation of the Brody formula. SW networks follow GOE statistics until a certain range of eigenvalue correlations depending upon the strength of random connections. We show that for these regimes of SW networks where spectral correlations do not follow GOE beyond a certain range, DGOE statistics models the correlations very well. The analysis performed in this paper proves the utility of the DGOE in network physics, as much as it has been useful in other physical systems.

The effect of weak dipolar interactions (DIs) between Ni nanoparticles (NPs) in samples with different Ni concentrations was investigated by performing a detailed characterization of their structural and magnetic properties. From the determination of several physical parameters of Ni NP assemblies, it was found that the ac and dc magnetic susceptibility measurements are valuable for identifying the DIs between NPs while hysteresis loops measurements showed to be very insensitive, provided that the strength of the DI field is much smaller than the maximum coercive field. Therefore, the sensitivity of the observed static and dynamical magnetic properties to the effect of weak DI depends on the measurement protocols used. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. Magnetic nanoparticles (NP) of magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) coated with oleic acid (OA) and dodecanoic acid (DA) were synthesized and investigated through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), magnetization M, and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. The OA coated samples were produced with different magnetic concentrations (78%, 76%, and 65%) and the DA sample with 63% of Fe(3)O(4). Images from TEM indicate that the NP have a nearly spherical geometry and mean diameter similar to 5.5 nm. Magnetization measurements, performed in zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled processes under different external magnetic fields H, exhibited a maximum at a given temperature T(B) in the ZFC curves, which depends on the NP coating (OA or DA), magnetite concentration, and H. The temperature T(B) decreases monotonically with increasing H and, for a given H, the increase in the magnetite concentration results in an increase in T(B). The observed behavior is related to the dipolar interaction between NP, which seems to be an important mechanism in all samples studied. This is supported by the results of the ac magnetic susceptibility chi(ac) measurements, where the temperature in which chi' peaks for different frequencies follows the Vogel-Fulcher model, a feature commonly found in systems with dipolar interactions. Curves of H versus T(B)/T(B) (H=0) for samples with different coatings and magnetite concentrations collapse into a universal curve, indicating that the qualitative magnetic behavior of the samples may be described by the NP themselves, instead of the coating or the strength of the dipolar interaction. Below T(B), M versus H curves show a coercive field (H(C)) that increases monotonically with decreasing temperature. The saturation magnetization (M(S)) follows the Bloch's law and values of M(S) at room temperature as high as 78 emu/g were estimated, a result corresponding to similar to 80% of the bulk value. The overlap of M/M(S) versus H/T curves for a given sample and the low H(C) at high temperatures suggest superparamagnetic behavior in all samples studied. The overlap of M/M(S) versus H curves at constant temperature for different samples indicates that the NP magnetization behavior is preserved, independently of the coating and magnetite concentration. We report on temperature-dependent magnetoresistance measurements in balanced double quantum wells exposed to microwave irradiation for various frequencies. We have found that the resistance oscillations are described by the microwave-induced modification of electron distribution function limited by inelastic scattering (inelastic mechanism), up to a temperature of T*similar or equal to 4 K. With increasing temperature, a strong deviation of the oscillation amplitudes from the behavior predicted by this mechanism is observed, presumably indicating a crossover to another mechanism of microwave photoresistance, with similar frequency dependence. Our analysis shows that this deviation cannot be fully understood in terms of contribution from the mechanisms discussed in theory.

Magnetoresistance of two-dimensional electron systems with several occupied subbands oscillates owing to periodic modulation of the probability of intersubband transitions by the quantizing magnetic field. In addition to previous investigations of these magnetointersubband (MIS) oscillations in two-subband systems, we report on both experimental and theoretical studies of such a phenomenon in three-subband systems realized in triple quantum wells. We show that the presence of more than two subbands leads to a qualitatively different MIS oscillation picture, described as a superposition of several oscillating contributions. Under a continuous microwave irradiation, the magnetoresistance of triple-well systems exhibits an interference of MIS oscillations and microwave-induced resistance oscillations. The theory explaining these phenomena is presented in the general form, valid for an arbitrary number of subbands. A comparison of theory and experiment allows us to extract temperature dependence of quantum lifetime of electrons and to confirm the applicability of the inelastic mechanism of microwave photoresistance for the description of magnetotransport in multilayer systems.

The role of dipolar interactions among Ni nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in an amorphous SiO(2)/C matrix with different concentrations has been studied performing ac magnetic susceptibility chi(ac) measurements. For very diluted samples, with Ni concentrations < 4 wt % Ni or very weak dipolar interactions, the data are well described by the Neacuteel-Arrhenius law. Increasing Ni concentration to values up to 12.8 wt % Ni results in changes in the Neacuteel-Arrhenius behavior, the dipolar interactions become important, and need to be considered to describe the magnetic response of the NPs system. We have found no evidence of a spin-glasslike behavior in our Ni NP systems even when dipolar interactions are clearly present.
Emergent and reentrant fractional quantum Hall effect in trilayer systems in a tilted magnetic field
Resumo:
Magnetotransport measurements in triple-layer electron systems with high carrier density reveal fractional quantum Hall effect at total filling factors nu>2. With an in-plane magnetic field we are able to control the suppression of interlayer tunneling which causes a collapse of the integer quantum Hall plateaus at nu=2 and nu=4, and an emergence of fractional quantum Hall states with increasing tilt angles. The nu=4 state is replaced by three fractional quantum Hall states with denominator 3. The state nu=7/3 demonstrates reentrant behavior and the emergent state at nu=12/5 has a nonmonotonic behavior with increasing in-plane field. We attribute the observed fractional quantum Hall plateaus to correlated states in a trilayer system.

We report on the observation of microwave-induced resistance oscillations associated with the fractional ratio n/m of the microwave irradiation frequency to the cyclotron frequency for m up to 8 in a two-dimensional electron system with high electron density. The features are quenched at high microwave frequencies independent of the fractional order m. We analyze temperature, power, and frequency dependencies of the magnetoresistance oscillations and discuss them in connection with existing theories.

We model interface formation by metal deposition on the conjugated polymer poly-para-phenylene vinylene, studying direct aluminum and layered aluminum-calcium structures Al/PPV and Al/Ca/PPV. To do that we use classical molecular dynamics simulations, checked by ab initio density-functional theory calculations, for selected relevant configurations. We find that Al not only migrates easily into the film, with a strong charge transfer to the neighboring chains, but also promotes rearrangement of the polymer in the interfacial region to the hexagonal structure. On the other hand, our results indicate that a thin Ca layer is sufficient to protect the film and maintain a well-defined metal/polymer interface, and that also a thin Al capping layer may protect the whole from environmental degradation.

We have performed ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to generate an atomic structure model of amorphous hafnium oxide (a-HfO(2)) via a melt-and-quench scheme. This structure is analyzed via bond-angle and partial pair distribution functions. These results give a Hf-O average nearest-neighbor distance of 2.2 angstrom, which should be compared to the bulk value, which ranges from 1.96 to 2.54 angstrom. We have also investigated the neutral O vacancy and a substitutional Si impurity for various sites, as well as the amorphous phase of Hf(1-x)Si(x)O(2) for x=0.25, 0375, and 0.5.

NiCl(2)-4SC(NH(2))(2) (known as DTN) is a spin-1 material with a strong single-ion anisotropy that is regarded as a new candidate for Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of spin degrees of freedom. We present a systematic study of the low-energy excitation spectrum of DTN in the field-induced magnetically ordered phase by means of high-field electron spin resonance measurements at temperatures down to 0.45 K. We argue that two gapped modes observed in the experiment can be consistently interpreted within a four-sublattice antiferromagnet model with a finite interaction between two tetragonal subsystems and unbroken axial symmetry. The latter is crucial for the interpretation of the field-induced ordering in DTN in terms of BEC.

The influence of microwave irradiation on dissipative and Hall resistance in high-quality bilayer electron systems is investigated experimentally. We observe a deviation from odd symmetry under magnetic-field reversal in the microwave-induced Hall resistance boolean AND R(xy), whereas the dissipative resistance boolean AND R(xx) obeys even symmetry. Studies of Delta R(xy) as a function of the microwave electric field and polarization exhibit a strong and nontrivial power and polarization dependence. The obtained results are discussed in connection to existing theoretical models of microwave-induced photoconductivity.
