This paper shows a new hybrid method for risk assessment regarding interruptions in sensitive processes due to faults in electric power distribution systems. This method determines indices related to long duration interruptions and short duration voltage variations (SDVV), such as voltage sags and swells in each customer supplied by the distribution network. Frequency of such occurrences and their impact on customer processes are determined for each bus and classified according to their corresponding magnitude and duration. The method is based on information regarding network configuration, system parameters and protective devices. It randomly generates a number of fault scenarios in order to assess risk areas regarding long duration interruptions and voltage sags and swells in an especially inventive way, including frequency of events according to their magnitude and duration. Based on sensitivity curves, the method determines frequency indices regarding disruption in customer processes that represent equipment malfunction and possible process interruptions due to voltage sags and swells. Such approach allows for the assessment of the annual costs associated with each one of the evaluated power quality indices.

This paper discusses the need to simultaneously monitor voltage unbalance and harmonic distortions in addition to root-mean-square voltage values. An alternative way to obtain the parameters related to voltage unbalance at fundamental frequency as well as voltage harmonic distortions is here proposed, which is based on the representation of instantaneous values at the axes and at the instantaneous Euclidean norm. A new power-quality (PQ) index is then proposed to combine the effects of voltage unbalance and harmonic distortions. This new index is easily implemented into existing electronic power meters. This PQ index is determined from the analysis of temperature rise in induction motor windings, which were tested for long periods of time. This paper also shows that these voltage disturbances, which are harmful to the lifetime expectancy of motors, can be measured by alternative ways in relation to conventional methods. Although this paper deals with induction motors only, the results show the relevance for further studies on other pieces of equipment.

This paper reports on design of digital control for wind turbines and its relation to the quality of power fed into the Brazilian grid on connecting to it a 192 MW wind farm equipped with doubly fed induction generators. PWM converters are deployed as vector controlled regulated current voltage sources for their rotors, for independent control of both active and reactive power of those generators. Both speed control and active power control strategies are analyzed, in the search for maximum efficiency of conversion of wind kinetic energy into electric power and enhanced quality of delivered power. A novel methodology to assess the risk of power transformer failures caused by external faults, such as short-circuit, taking the paper insulation condition into account, is presented. The risk index is obtained by contrasting the insulation paper condition with the probability that the transformer withstands the short-circuit current flowing along the winding during an external fault. In order to assess the risk, this probability and the value of the degree of polymerization of the insulating paper are regarded as inputs of a type-2 fuzzy logic system (T2-FLS), which computes the fuzzy risk level. A Monte Carlo simulation has been used to find the survival function of the currents flowing through the transformer winding during a single-phase or a three-phase short-circuit. This work presents a case study on technology assessment for power quality improvement devices. A system compatibility test protocol for power quality mitigation devices was developed in order to evaluate the functionality of three-phase voltage restoration devices. In order to validate this test protocol, the micro-DVR, a reduced power development platform for DVR (dynamic voltage restorer) devices, was tested and the results are discussed based on voltage disturbances standards. It is well known that structures subjected to dynamic loads do not follow the usual similarity laws when the material is strain rate sensitive. As a consequence, it is not possible to use a scaled model to predict the prototype behaviour. In the present study, this problem is overcome by changing the impact velocity so that the model behaves exactly as the prototype. This exact solution is generated thanks to the use of an exponential constitutive law to infer the dynamic flow stress. Furthermore, it is shown that the adopted procedure does not rely on any previous knowledge of the structure response. Three analytical models are used to analyze the performance of the technique. It is shown that perfect similarity is achieved, regardless of the magnitude of the scaling factor. For the class of material used, the solution outlined has long been sought, inasmuch as it allows perfect similarity for strain rate sensitive structures subject to impact loads. Welded equipment for cryogenic applications is utilized in chemical, petrochemical, and metallurgical industries. One material suitable for cryogenic application is austenitic stainless steel, which usually doesn`t present ductile/brittle transition temperature, except in the weld metal, where the presence of ferrite and micro inclusions can promote a brittle failure, either by ferrite cleavage or dimple nucleation and growth, respectively. A 25-mm- (1-in.-) thick AISI 304 stainless steel base metal was welded with the SAW process using a 308L solid wire and two kinds of fluxes and constant voltage power sources with two types of electrical outputs: direct current electrode positive and balanced square wave alternating current. The welded joints were analyzed by chemical composition, microstructure characterization, room temperature mechanical properties, and CVN impact test at -100 degrees C (-73 degrees F). Results showed that an increase of chromium and nickel content was observed in all weld beads compared to base metal. The chromium and nickel equivalents ratio for the weld beads were always higher for welding with square wave AC for the two types of fluxes than for direct current. The modification in the Cr(eq)/Ni(eq) ratio changes the delta ferrite morphology and, consequently, modifies the weld bead toughness at lower temperatures. The oxygen content can also affect the toughness in the weld bead. The highest absorbed energy in a CVN impact test was obtained for the welding condition with square wave AC electrical output and neutral flux, followed by DC(+) electrical output and neutral flux, and square wave AC electrical output and alloyed flux.

A model predictive controller (MPC) is proposed, which is robustly stable for some classes of model uncertainty and to unknown disturbances. It is considered as the case of open-loop stable systems, where only the inputs and controlled outputs are measured. It is assumed that the controller will work in a scenario where target tracking is also required. Here, it is extended to the nominal infinite horizon MPC with output feedback. The method considers an extended cost function that can be made globally convergent for any finite input horizon considered for the uncertain system. The method is based on the explicit inclusion of cost contracting constraints in the control problem. The controller considers the output feedback case through a non-minimal state-space model that is built using past output measurements and past input increments. The application of the robust output feedback MPC is illustrated through the simulation of a low-order multivariable system.

This work presents an alternative way to formulate the stable Model Predictive Control (MPC) optimization problem that allows the enlargement of the domain of attraction, while preserving the controller performance. Based on the dual MPC that uses the null local controller, it proposed the inclusion of an appropriate set of slacked terminal constraints into the control problem. As a result, the domain of attraction is unlimited for the stable modes of the system, and the largest possible for the non-stable modes. Although this controller does not achieve local optimality, simulations show that the input and output performances may be comparable to the ones obtained with the dual MPC that uses the LQR as a local controller. A solar energy powered failing film evaporator with film promoter was developed for concentrating diluted solutions (industrial effluents). The procedure proposed here does not emit CO(2), making it a viable alternative to the method of concentrating solutions that uses vapor as a heat source and releases CO(2) from burning fuel oil in a furnace, in direct opposition to the carbon reduction agreement established by the Kyoto protocol. This novel device consists of the following components: a flat plate solar collector with adjustable inclination, a film promoter (adhering to the collector), a liquid distributor, a concentrate collector. and accessories. The evaporation rate of the device was found to be affected both by the inclination of the collector and by the feed flow. The meteorological variables cannot be controlled, but were monitored constantly to ascertain the behavior of the equipment in response to the variations occurring throughout the day. Higher efficiencies were attained when the inclination of the collector was adjusted monthly, showing up to 36.4% higher values than when the collector remained in a fixed position. The solar driven photo-Fenton process for treating water containing phenol as a contaminant has been evaluated by means of pilot-scale experiments with a parabolic trough solar reactor (PTR). The effects of Fe(II) (0.04-1.0 mmol L(-1)), H(2)O(2) (7-270 mmol L(-1)), initial phenol concentration (100 and 500 mg C L(-1)), solar radiation, and operation mode (batch and fed-batch) on the process efficiency were investigated. More than 90% of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was removed within 3 hours of irradiation or less, a performance equivalent to that of artificially-irradiated reactors, indicating that solar light can be used either as an effective complementary or as an alternative source of photons for the photo-Fenton degradation process. A non-linear multivariable model based on a neural network was fit to the experimental results of batch-mode experiments in order to evaluate the relative importance of the process variables considered on the DOC removal over the reaction time. This included solar radiation, which is not a controlled variable. The observed behavior of the system in batch-mode was compared with fed-batch experiments carried out under similar conditions. The main contribution of the study consists of the results from experiments under different conditions and the discussion of the system behavior. Both constitute important information for the design and scale-up of solar radiation-based photodegradation processes.

We present a novel array RLS algorithm with forgetting factor that circumvents the problem of fading regularization, inherent to the standard exponentially-weighted RLS, by allowing for time-varying regularization matrices with generic structure. Simulations in finite precision show the algorithm`s superiority as compared to alternative algorithms in the context of adaptive beamforming.

The theoretical and experimental open-circuit voltage optimizations of a simple fabrication process of silicon solar cells n(+)p with rear passivation are presented. The theoretical results were obtained by using an in-house developed program, including the light trapping effect and metal-grid optimization. On the other hand, the experimental steps were monitored by the photoconductive decay technique. The starting materials presented thickness of about 300 pm and resistivities: FZ (0.5 Omega cm), Cz-type 1 (2.5 Omega cm) and Cz-type 2 (3.3 Omega cm). The Gaussian profile emitters were optimized with sheet resistance between 55 Omega/sq and 100 Omega/sq, and approximately 2.0 mu m thickness in accordance to the theoretical results. Excellent implied open-circuit voltages of 670.8 mV, 652.5 mV and 662.6 mV, for FZ, Cz-type 1 and Cz-type 2 silicon wafers, respectively, could be associated to the measured lifetimes that represents solar cell efficiency up to 20% if a low cost anti-reflection coating system, composed by random pyramids and SiO(2) layer, is considered even for typical Cz silicon. The simultaneous use of different sensors technologies is an efficient method to increase the performance of chemical sensors systems. Among the available technologies, mass and capacitance transducers are particularly interesting because they can take advantage also from non-conductive sensing layers, such as most of the more interesting molecular recognition systems. In this paper, an array of quartz microbalance sensors is complemented by an array of capacitors obtained from a commercial biometrics fingerprints detector. The two sets of transducers, properly functionalized by sensitive molecular and polymeric films, are utilized for the estimation of adulteration in gasolines, and in particular to quantify the content of ethanol in gasolines, an application of importance for Brazilian market. Results indicate that the hybrid system outperforms the individual sensor arrays even if the quantification of ethanol in gasoline, due to the variability of gasolines formulation, is affected by a barely acceptable error. The development and fabrication of a thermo-electro-optic sensor using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a resistive micro-heater placed in one of the device`s arms is presented. The Mach-Zehnder structure was fabricated on a single crystal silicon substrate using silicon oxynitride and amorphous hydrogenated silicon carbide films to form an anti-resonant reflective optical waveguide. The materials were deposited by Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique at low temperatures (similar to 320 degrees C). To optimize the heat transfer and increase the device response with current variation, part of the Mach-Zehnder sensor arm was suspended through front-side bulk micromachining of the silicon substrate in a KOH solution. With the temperature variation caused by the micro-heater, the refractive index of the core layer of the optical waveguide changes due to the thermo-optic effect. Since this variation occurs only in one of the Mach-Zehnder`s arm, a phase difference between the arms is produced, leading to electromagnetic interference. In this way, the current applied to the micro-resistor can control the device output optical power. Further, reactive ion etching technique was used in this work to define the device`s geometry, and a study of SF6 based etching rates on different composition of silicon oxynitride films is also presented.
