A recently developed dual-beam configuration that optimizes the thermal lens technique has been used to obtain the absorption spectrum of pure water from 350 to 528 nm. Our results indicate the minimum linear absorption coefficient smaller than 2 X 10(-5) cm(-1) between 360 and 400 nm. This value is lower than previous literature data, and it is blueshifted. Absorption coefficients as small as 2 X 10(-7) cm(-1) can be measured for water using 1 W of excitation power. A detection limit of similar to 6 X 10(-9) cm(-1) (P=1 W) for CCl(4) was estimated, which represents, to the best of our knowledge, the highest sensitivity obtained in small absorption measurements in liquids. In the crystal of the title compound, C(17)H(16)N(2), molecules are linked by C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds, forming rings of graph-set motifs R(2)(1) (6) and R(2)(2) (10). The title molecule is close to planar, with a dihedral angle between the aromatic rings of 0.6 (1)degrees. Torsion angles confirm a conformational trans structure.

The Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory [Laboratorio Nacional de Luz Sincrotron (LNLS), Campinas, SP, Brazil] is the first commissioned synchrotron light source in the southern hemisphere. The first wiggler macromolecular crystallography beamline (MX2) at the LNLS has been recently constructed and brought into operation. Here the technical design, experimental set-up, parameters of the beamline and the first experimental results obtained at MX2 are described. The beamline operates on a 2.0 T hybrid 30-pole wiggler, and its optical layout includes collimating mirror, Si( 111) double-crystal monochromator and toroidal bendable mirror. The measured flux density at the sample position at 8.7 eV reaches 4.8 x 10(11) photons s(-1) mm(-2) (100 mA)(-1). The beamline is equipped with a MarResearch Desktop Beamline Goniostat (MarDTB) and 3 x 3 MarMosaic225 CCD detector, and is controlled by a customized version of the Blu-Ice software. A description of the first X-ray diffraction data sets collected at the MX2 LNLS beamline and used for macromolecular crystal structure solution is also provided.

In the title compound, C10H6ClNO2, the dihedral angle between the benzene and maleimide rings is 47.54 (9)degrees. Molecules form centrosymmetric dimers through C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, resulting in rings of graph- set motif R2 2(8) and chains in the [100] direction. Molecules are also linked by C-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bonds along [001]. In this same direction, molecules are connected to other neighbouring molecules by C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, forming edge- fused R-4(4)(24) rings.

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(6)H(9)N(2)OS(2)(+)center dot-HSO(4)(-)center dot H(2)O, contains a heterocyclic cation, a hydrogen sulfate anion and a water molecule. There are strong hydrogen bonds between the hydrogen sulfate anions and water molecules, forming an infinite chain along the [010] direction, from which the cations are pendent. The steric, electronic and geometric features are compared with those of similar compounds. In this way, structural relationships are stated in terms of the influence of the sulfate group on the protonation of the heterocycle and on the tautomeric equilibrium in the solid state.

Measured and calculated differential cross sections for elastic (rotationally unresolved) electron scattering from two primary alcohols, methanol (CH(3)OH) and ethanol (C(2)H(5)OH), are reported. The measurements are obtained using the relative flow method with helium as the standard gas and a thin aperture as the collimating target gas source. The relative flow method is applied without the restriction imposed by the relative flow pressure conditions on helium and the unknown gas. The experimental data were taken at incident electron energies of 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 50, and 100 eV and for scattering angles of 5 degrees-130 degrees. There are no previous reports of experimental electron scattering differential cross sections for CH(3)OH and C(2)H(5)OH in the literature. The calculated differential cross sections are obtained using two different implementations of the Schwinger multichannel method, one that takes all electrons into account and is adapted for parallel computers, and another that uses pseudopotentials and considers only the valence electrons. Comparison between theory and experiment shows that theory is able to describe low-energy electron scattering from these polyatomic targets quite well.

During a polymorphism screening of hydroxybenzophenone derivatives, a monohydrate pseudopolymorph of (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)(phenyl)methanone, C(13)H(10)O(3)center dot H(2)O, (I), was obtained. Structural relationships and the role of water in crystal assembly were established on the basis of the known anhydrous form [Cox, Kechagias & Kelly (2008). Acta Cryst. B64, 206-216]. The crystal packing of (I) is stabilized by classical intermolecular O-H...O hydrogen bonds, generating a three-dimensional network.

The reverse engineering problem addressed in the present research consists of estimating the thicknesses and the optical constants of two thin films deposited on a transparent substrate using only transmittance data through the whole stack. No functional dispersion relation assumptions are made on the complex refractive index. Instead, minimal physical constraints are employed, as in previous works of some of the authors where only one film was considered in the retrieval algorithm. To our knowledge this is the first report on the retrieval of the optical constants and the thickness of multiple film structures using only transmittance data that does not make use of dispersion relations. The same methodology may be used if the available data correspond to normal reflectance. Background: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the protective effects of the 4-anilinoquinazoline derivative PD153035 on cardiac ischemia/reperfusion and mitochondrial function. Methodology/Principal Findings: Perfused rat hearts and cardiac HL-1 cells were used to determine cardioprotective effects of PD153035. Isolated rat heart mitochondria were studied to uncover mechanisms of cardioprotection. Nanomolar doses of PD153035 strongly protect against heart and cardiomyocyte damage induced by ischemia/reperfusion and cyanide/aglycemia. PD153035 did not alter oxidative phosphorylation, nor directly prevent Ca(2+) induced mitochondrial membrane permeability transition. The protective effect of PD153035 on HL-1 cells was also independent of AKT phosphorylation state. Interestingly, PD153035 activated K(+) transport in isolated mitochondria, in a manner prevented by ATP and 5-hydroxydecanoate, inhibitors of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive K(+) channels (mitoK(ATP)). 5-Hydroxydecanoate also inhibited the cardioprotective effect of PD153035 in cardiac HL-1 cells, demonstrating that this protection is dependent on mitoK(ATP) activation. Conclusions/Significance: We conclude that PD153035 is a potent cardioprotective compound and acts in a mechanism involving mitoK(ATP) activation.

In this work we present a complete characterization and magnetic study of vanadium oxide/hexadecylamine nanotubes (VO(x)/Hexa NT's) doped with Co(2)+ and Ni(2+) ions. The morphology of the NT's has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy, while the metallic elements have been quantified by the instrumental neutron activation analysis technique. The static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied by collecting data of magnetization as a function of magnetic field and temperature and by electron paramagnetic resonance. At difference of the majority reports in the literature, we do not observe magnetic dimers in vanadium oxide nanotubes. Also, we observed that the incorporation of metallic ions (Co(2+), S = 3/2 and Ni(2+), S = 1) decreases notably the amount of V(4+) ions in the system, from 14-16% (nondoped case) to 2%-4%, with respect to the total vanadium atoms (fact corroborated by XPS experiments) anyway preserving the tubular nanostructure. The method to decrease the amount of V(4+) in the nanotubes improves considerably their potential technological applications as Li-ion batteries cathodes. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. The piperidone ring in the title compound, C(18)H(17)Cl(2)NOS(2), has a distorted half-chair conformation. The S-bound benzene rings are approximately perpendicular to and splayed out of the mean plane through the piperidone ring [dihedral angles = 71.86 (13) and 46.94 (11)degrees]. In the crystal, C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions link the molecules into [010] supramolecular chains with a helical topology. C-H center dot center dot center dot Cl and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions are also present.

The structure analysis of the title compound, C(14)H(16)O(2)S(2), shows the SMe and H atoms of the bond linking the six-membered rings to be syn and also to be syn to the bridgehead -CH(2)- group. Each of the five-membered rings adopts an envelope conformation at the bridgehead -CH(2)- group. The dione-substituted ring adopts a folded conformation about the 1,4-C center dot center dot center dot C vector, with the ketone groups lying to one side. The cyclohexene ring adopts a boat conformation.

In the title compound, C(12)H(22)O(2), the 4-methyltetrahydropyran-4-ol ring adopts a conformation close to that of a chair and with the two O atoms syn; the cyclohexyl group occupies an equatorial position and adopts a chair conformation. In the crystal packing, supramolecular chains along the b axis are sustained by O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. These are connected into undulating layers in the ab plane by C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions.

Thermodynamics, equilibrium structure, and dynamics of glass-forming liquids Ca(NO(3))(2)center dot nH(2)O, n=4, 6, and 8, have been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A polarizable model was considered for H(2)O and NO(3)- on the basis of previous fluctuating charge models for pure water and the molten salt 2Ca(NO(3))(2)center dot 3KNO(3). Similar thermodynamic properties have been obtained with nonpolarizable and polarizable models. The glass transition temperature, T(g), estimated from MD simulations was dependent on polarization, in particular the dependence of T(g) with electrolyte concentration. Significant polarization effects on equilibrium structure were observed in cation-cation, cation-anion, and water-water structures. Polarization increases the diffusion coefficient of H(2)O, but does not change significantly the diffusion coefficients of ions. Viscosity decreases upon inclusion of polarization, but the conductivity calculated with the polarizable model is smaller than the nonpolarizable model because polarization enhances anion-cation interactions.

Tibolone is used for hormone reposition of postmenopause women and isotibolone is considered the major degradation product of tibolone. Isotibolone can also be present in tibolone API raw materials due to some inadequate synthesis. Its presence is then necessary to be identified and quantified in the quality control of both API and drug products. In this work we present the indexing of an isotibolone X-ray diffraction pattern measured with synchrotron light (lambda=1.2407 angstrom) in the transmission mode. The characterization of the isotibolone sample by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and thermal analysis are also presented. The isotibolone crystallographic data are a=6.8066 angstrom, b=20.7350 angstrom, c=6.4489 angstrom, beta=76.428 degrees, V=884.75 angstrom(3), and space group P2(1), rho(o)= 1.187 g cm(-3), Z=2.
