The use of the spin of the electron as the ultimate logic bit-in what has been dubbed spintronics-can lead to a novel way of thinking about information flow. At the same time single-layer graphene has been the subject of intense research due to its potential application in nanoscale electronics. While defects can significantly alter the electronic properties of nanoscopic systems, the lack of control can lead to seemingly deleterious effects arising from the random arrangement of such impurities. Here we demonstrate, using ab initio density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green`s functions calculations, that it is possible to obtain perfect spin selectivity in doped graphene nanoribbons to produce a perfect spin filter. We show that initially unpolarized electrons entering the system give rise to 100% polarization of the current due to random disorder. This effect is explained in terms of different localization lengths for each spin channel which leads to a new mechanism for the spin filtering effect that is disorder-driven.

Chemically functionalized adamantane molecules have been investigated by first principles total energy calculations. Boron and nitrogen functionalized molecules were found to be very stable, consistent with available experimental data. Two hypothetical molecular crystals, involving functionalized adamantane, were investigated. These molecular crystals presented direct electronic bandgaps and large bulk moduli, which suggested a possible road for molecular self-assembly using functionalized diamondoids. In this work a systematic study of the dependence of the structural, electronic, and vibrational properties on nanoparticle size is performed. Based on our total energy calculations we identified three characteristic regimes associated with the nanoparticle`s dimensions: (i) below 1.5 nm (100 atoms) where remarkable molecular aspects are observed; (ii) between 1.5 and 2.0 nm (100 and 300 atoms) where the molecular behavior is influenced by the inner core crystal properties; and (iii) above 2.0 nm (more than 300 atoms) where the crystal properties are preponderant. In all considered regimes the nanoparticle`s surface modulates its properties. This modulation decreases with the increasing of the nanoparticle`s size.

The growth and magnetic properties of Tin Selenide (SnSe) doped with Eu(2+) Sn(1-x)Eu(x)Se (x=2.5%) were investigated. Q-band (34 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance measurements show that the site symmetry of Eu(2+) at 4.2 K is orthorhombic and the Lande factor was determined to be g=1.99 +/- 0.01. The exchange coupling between nearest-neighbor (NN) Eu(2+) ions was estimated from magnetization and magnetic-susceptibility measurements using a model that takes into account the magnetic contributions of single ions, pairs and triplets. The exchange interaction between Eu(2+) nearest neighbors was found to be antiferromagnetic with an estimated average value of J(p)/k(B) =-0.18 +/- 0.03 K. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the influence of the urea and glycine fuels on the synthesis of Mn-Zn ferrite by combustion reaction The morphology and magnetic properties of the resulting powders were investigated. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption (BET), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), and magnetic measurement of M x H curves. The X-lay diffraction patterns indicated that the samples containing urea resulted in the formation of crystalline powders and the presence of hematite as a secondary phase The samples containing glycine presented only the formation of crystalline and monophases (Mn,Zn)Fe(2)O(4). The average crystallite size was 18 and 35 nm and saturation magnetization was 3.6 and 75 emu/g, respectively, for the samples containing urea and glycine. The samples synthesized with glycine fuel showed better magnetic properties for application as soft magnetic devices. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved

Ribbons of nominal composition (Pr(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6))(0.96)Cr(0.01)(TiC)(0.03) were produced by arc-melting and melt-spinning the alloys on a Cu wheel. X-ray diffraction reveals two main phases, one based upon alpha-Fe and the other upon Pr(2)Fe(14)B. The ribbons show exchange spring behavior with H(c)=12.5 kOe and (BH)(max)= 13.6 MGOe when these two phases are well coupled. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the coupled behavior is observed when the microstructure consists predominantly of alpha-Fe grains(diameter similar to 100 nm.) surrounded by hard material containing Pr(2)Fe(14)B. A first-order-reversal-curve (FORC) analysis was performed for both a well-coupled sample and a partially-coupled sample. The FORC diagrams show two strong peaks for both the partially-coupled sample and for the well coupled material. In both cases, the localization of the FORC probability suggests demagnetizing interactions between particles. Switching field distributions were calculated and are consistent with the sample microstructure. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Several strategies aimed at sorting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) by diameter and/or electronic structure have been developed in recent years. A nondestructive sorting method was recently proposed in which nanotube bundles are dispersed in water-surfactant solutions and submitted to ultracentrifugation in a density gradient. By this method, SWNTs of different diameters are distributed according to their densities along the centrifuge tube. A mixture of two anionic amphiphiles, namely sodium dodecylsulfate (SIDS) and sodium cholate (SC), presented the best performance in discriminating nanotubes by diameter. We present molecular dynamics studies of the water-surfactant-SWNT system. The simulations revealed one aspect of the discriminating power of surfactants: they can actually be attracted toward the interior of the nanotube cage. The binding energies of SDS and SC on the outer nanotube surface are very similar and depend weakly on diameter. The binding inside the tubes, on the contrary, is strongly diameter dependent: SDS fits best inside tubes with diameters ranging from 8 to 9 angstrom, while SC is best accommodated in larger tubes, with diameters in the range 10.5-12 angstrom. The dynamics at room temperature showed that, as the amphiphile moves to the hollow cage, water molecules are dragged together, thereby promoting the nanotube filling. The resulting densities of filled SWNT are in agreement with measured densities.

We study the effect of thermal disorder on the electronic structure of one-dimensional poly-para-phenylene (PPP). In a real chain the torsion angles between rings are bound to be distributed over a range of values, which depend on temperature, and thus the chain is intrinsically disordered. In this study we simulated this kind of thermally induced off-diagonal disorder through the simple Huckel method. We base our Hamiltonian on ab initio results for the effect of temperature on torsion angles, and the effect of torsion angles on the energy gap. We analyze the electronic structure of 200-monomer-long chains focusing on the density of states, and the associated localization character (measured by the inverse participation ratio). Our results contrast with the usually assumed Gaussian-shaped density of localized states for disordered systems. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We performed classical molecular dynamics simulations of the vapor-deposition of alpha-T4 oligomers on the TiO(2)-anatase (101) surface, comparing different sets of charges associated with the atoms of the model. The potential energy surfaces for alpha-T4 and TiO(2) were described by re-parametrizations of the Universal force field with charges given by the charge equilibration (QEq) scheme, or with fixed charges obtained by an ab initio method using the Hirshfeld partition. The two sets of charges lead to completely different results for the interface formation, and for the characteristics of the organic film, with a clearly defined alpha-T4 contact layer in the QEq case, and a more homogeneous molecular distribution when using Hirshfeld charges. The main reason for the discrepancy was found to be the incorrect charge assignment given by QEq to the sulfur and alpha-carbon atoms in thiophenes, and highlight the relevance of long-range interactions in the organization of molecular films. Optical Properties and Charge-Transfer Excitations in Edge-Functionalized All-Graphene Nanojunctions
Resumo:
We investigate the optical properties of edge-fiinctionalized graphene nanosystems, focusing on the formation of junctions and charge-transfer excitons. We consider a class of graphene structures that combine the main electronic features of graphene with the wide tunability of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. By investigating prototypical ribbon-like systems, we show that, upon convenient choice of functional groups, low-energy excitations with remarkable charge-transfer character and large oscillator strength are obtained. These properties can be further modulated through an appropriate width variation, thus spanning a wide range in the low-energy region of the UV-vis spectra. Our results are relevant in view of designing all-graphene optoelectronic nanodevices, which take advantage of the versatility of molecular functionalization, together with the stability and the electronic properties of graphene nanostructures.

An evaluation was made of the influence of calcination temperatures on the structure, morphology and eletromagnetic properties of Ni-Zn ferrite powders. To this end, Ni(0.5)Zn(0.5)Fe(2)O(4) ferrite powders were prepared by combustion reaction and calcined at temperatures of 800, 1000 and 1200 degrees C/2 h. The resulting powders were characterized by XRD, SEM and reflectivity measurements in the frequency bands of 8-12 GHz. The results demonstrated that raising the calcination temperature increased the particle sizes of the powders of all the systems in question, improving the reflectivity of the materials. This paper reports on a study of Cr(3+)-doped nanosized Ni-Zn ferrites produced by combustion reaction, and evaluates their morphological and magnetic properties. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and SEM and magnetic properties. All the compositions showed the formation of the inverse spinel phase of Ni-Zn ferrite. The average crystallite size ranged from 21 to 26 nm. The saturation magnetization was found to be in the range of 53-43 emu/g. The increase in Cr(3+) concentration in the Ni-Zn ferrite caused a reduction in hysteresis losses and a slight reduction in the saturation magnetization. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Films of isotropic nanocrystalline Pd(80)Co(20) alloys were obtained by electrodeposition onto brass substrate in plating baths maintained at different pH values. Increasing the pH of the plating bath led to an increase in mean grain size without inducing significant changes in the composition of the alloy. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant was estimated and the value was of the same order of magnitude as that reported for samples with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. First order reversal curve (FORC) analysis revealed the presence of an important component of reversible magnetization. Also, FORC diagrams obtained at different sweep rate of the applied magnetic field, revealed that this reversible component is strongly affected by kinetic effect. The slight bias observed in the irreversible part of the FORC distribution suggested the dominance of magnetizing intergrain exchange coupling over demagnetizing dipolar interactions and microstructural disorder. The disclosure of magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) as stable dispersions of surface modified gamma-Fe(2)O(3) or CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles (NPs) in the 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIBF(4)) ionic liquid is reported. The magnetic NPs were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The surface modified NPs have proved to form stable dispersions in BMIBF(4) in the absence of water and behave like a magnetic ionic liquid. The MILs have been characterized by Raman spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, and DSC. The stability of the magnetic NPs in BMIBF(4) is consistently explained by assuming the formation of a semiorganized protective layer composed of supramolecular aggregates in the form of [(BMI)(2)(BF(4))(3)](-). A superparamagnetic behavior and saturation magnetization of ca. 18 emu/g for a sample containing 30% w/w maghemite NPs/BMIBF(4) have been inferred from static and dynamic magnetic measurements. DSC results have shown that the MIL composed of 30% w/w CoFe(2)O(4) NPs/BMIBF(4) remains a liquid phase down to -84 degrees C.

In this work we report results on the influence of heavy rare earth ions substitution on microstructure and magnetism of nanocrystalline magnetite. A series of Fe(2.85)RE(0.15)O(4) (RE = Gd, Dy, Ho, Tm and Yb) samples have been prepared by high energy ball milling. Structure/microstructure investigations of two selected samples Fe(2.85)Gd(0.15)O(4) and Fe(2.85)Tm(0.15)O(4), represent an extension of the previously published results on Fe(3)O(4)/gamma-Fe(2)O(3), Fe(2.85)Y(0.15)O(4) and Fe(2.55)In(0.45)O(4) [Z. Cvejic, S. Rakic, A. Kremenovic, B. Antic, C. Jovalekic. Ph. Colomban, Sol. State Sciences 8 (2006) 908], while magnetic characterization has been done for all the samples. Crystallite/particle size and strain determined by X-ray diffractometry and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the nanostructured nature of the mechanosynthesized materials. X-ray powder diffraction was used to analyze anisotropic line broadening effects through the Rietveld method. The size anisotropy was found to be small while strain anisotropy was large, indicating nonuniform distribution of deffects in the presence of Gd and Tm in the crystal structure. Superparamagnetic(SPM) behavior at room temperature was observed for all samples studied. The Y-substituted Fe(3)O(4) had the largest He and the lowest M(S). We discuss the changes in magnetic properties in relation to their magnetic anisotropy and microstructure. High field irreversibility (H>20kOe) in ZFC/FC magnetization versus temperature indicates the existence of high magnetocrystalline and/or strain induced anisotropy. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
