The valence and core levels of In(2)O(3) and Sn-doped In(2)O(3) have been studied by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (hv = 6000 eV) and by conventional Al K alpha (hv = 1486.6 eV) x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental spectra are compared with density-functional theory calculations. It is shown that structure deriving from electronic levels with significant In or Sn 5s character is selectively enhanced under 6000 eV excitation. This allows us to infer that conduction band states in Sn-doped samples and states at the bottom of the valence band both contain a pronounced In 5s contribution. The In 3d core line measured at hv = 1486.6 eV for both undoped and Sn-doped In(2)O(3) display an asymmetric lineshape, and may be fitted with two components associated with screened and unscreened final states. The In 3d core line spectra excited at hv = 6000 eV for the Sn-doped samples display pronounced shoulders and demand a fit with two components. The In 3d core line spectrum for the undoped sample can also be fitted with two components, although the relative intensity of the component associated with the screened final state is low, compared to excitation at 1486.6 eV. These results are consistent with a high concentration of carriers confined close to the surface of nominally undoped In(2)O(3). This conclusion is in accord with the fact that a conduction band feature observed for undoped In(2)O(3) in Al K alpha x-ray photoemission is much weaker than expected in hard x-ray photoemission.

The diluted magnetic semiconductors are promising materials for spintronic applications. Usually one intents to find the ferromagnetic state but recently the antiferromagnetism (AFM) was proposed to have some advantages. In this work, we verify the possibility to obtain spin polarization with an AFM state. In particular, we studied GaN 5% double doped with two different transition metals atoms (Mn and Co or Cr and Ni), forming the Mn(x)Co(0.056-x)Ga(0.944)N and Cr(x)Ni(0.056-x)Ga(0.944)N quaternary alloys. In order to simulate these systems in a more realistic way, and take into account composition fluctuations, we adapted the generalized quasichemical approach to diluted alloys, which is used in combination with spin density-functional theory. We find that is possible to obtain an AFM ground state up to 70% spin polarization.

Transparent conducting oxides (TCO) are widely used in technological applications ranging from photovoltaics to thin-film transparent field-effect transistors. In this work we report a first-principles investigation, based on density-functional theory, of the atomic and electronic properties of Ga(2)O(3)(ZnO)(6) (GZO(6)), which is a promising candidate to be used as host oxide for wide band gap TCO applications. We identify a low-energy configuration for the coherent distribution of the Ga and Zn atoms in the cation positions within the experimentally reported orthorhombic GZO(6) structure. Four Ga atoms are located in four-fold sites, while the remaining 12 Ga atoms in the unit cell form four shared Ga agglomerates (a motif of four atoms). The Zn atoms are distributed in the remaining cation sites with effective coordination numbers from 3.90 to 4.50. Furthermore, we identify the natural formation of twin-boundaries in GZO(6), which can explain the zigzag modulations observed experimentally by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy in GZO(n) (n=9). Due to the intrinsic twin-boundary formation, polarity inversion in the ZnO tetrahedrons is present which is facilitated by the formation of the Ga agglomerates. Our analysis shows that the formation of fourfold Ga sites and Ga agglomerates are stabilized by the electronic octet rule, while the distribution of Ga atoms and the formation of the twin-boundary help alleviate excess strain. Finally we identify that the electronic properties of GZO(6) are essentially determined by the electronic properties of ZnO, i.e., there are slight changes in the band gap and optical absorption properties.

The crystalline structure of transition-metals (TM) has been widely known for several decades, however, our knowledge on the atomic structure of TM clusters is still far from satisfactory, which compromises an atomistic understanding of the reactivity of TM clusters. For example, almost all density functional theory (DFT) calculations for TM clusters have been based on local (local density approximation-LDA) and semilocal (generalized gradient approximation-GGA) exchange-correlation functionals, however, it is well known that plain DFT fails to correct the self-interaction error, which affects the properties of several systems. To improve our basic understanding of the atomic and electronic properties of TM clusters, we report a DFT study within two nonlocal functionals, namely, the hybrid HSE (Heyd, Scuseria, and Ernzerhof) and GGA + U functionals, of the structural and electronic properties of the Co(13), Rh(13), and Hf(13) clusters. For Co(13) and Rh(13), we found that improved exchange-correlation functionals decrease the stability of open structures such as the hexagonal bilayer (HBL) and double simple-cubic (DSC) compared with the compact icosahedron (ICO) structure, however, DFT-GGA, DFT-GGA + U, and DFT-HSE yield very similar results for Hf(13). Thus, our results suggest that the DSC structure obtained by several plain DFT calculations for Rh(13) can be improved by the use of improved functionals. Using the sd hybridization analysis, we found that a strong hybridization favors compact structures, and hence, a correct description of the sd hybridization is crucial for the relative energy stability. For example, the sd hybridization decreases for HBL and DSC and increases for ICO in the case of Co(13) and Rh(13), while for Hf(13), the sd hybridization decreases for all configurations, and hence, it does not affect the relative stability among open and compact configurations.

Physical and electrochemical properties of nanostructured Ni-doped manganese oxides (MnO(x)) catalysts supported on different carbon powder substrates were investigated so as to characterize any carbon substrate effect toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics in alkaline medium. These NiMnO(x)/C materials were characterized using physicochemical analyses. Small insertion of Ni atoms in the MnO(x) lattice was observed, which consists of a true doping of the manganese oxide phase. The corresponding NiMnO(x) phase is present in the form of needles or agglomerates, with crystallite sizes in the order of 1.5-6.7 nm (from x-ray diffraction analyses). Layered manganite (MnOOH) phase has been detected for the Monarch 1000-supported NiMnO(x) material, while different species of MnO(x) phases are present at the E350G and MM225 carbons. Electrochemical studies in thin porous coating active layers in the rotating ring-disk electrode setup revealed that the MnO(x) catalysts present better ORR kinetics and electrochemical stability upon Ni doping. The ORR follows the so-called peroxide mechanism on MnO(x)/C catalysts, with the occurrence of minority HO(2)(-) disproportionation reaction. The HO(2)(-) disproportionation reaction progressively increases with the Ni content in NiMnO(x) materials. The catalysts supported on the MM225 and E350G carbons promote faster disproportionation reaction, thus leading to an overall four-electron ORR pathway. (C) 2011 The Electrochemical Society. Oscillatory kinetics is commonly observed in the electrocatalytic oxidation of most species that can be used in fuel cell devices. Examples include formic acid, methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, and hydrogen/carbon monoxide mixtures, and most papers refer to half-cell experiments. We report in this paper the experimental investigation of the oscillatory dynamics in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell at 30 degrees C. The system consists of a Pt/C cathode fed with oxygen and a PtRu (1:1)/C anode fed with H(2) mixed with 100 ppm of CO, and was studied at different cell currents and anode flow rates. Many different states including periodic and nonperiodic series were observed as a function of the cell current and the H(2)/CO flow rate. In general, aperiodic/chaotic states were favored at high currents and low flow rates. The dynamics was further characterized in terms of the relationship between the oscillation amplitude and the subsequent time required for the anode to get poisoned by carbon monoxide. To test whether plant species influence greenhouse gas production in diverse ecosystems, we measured wet season soil CO(2) and N(2)O fluxes close to similar to 300 large (>35 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH)) trees of 15 species at three clay-rich forest sites in central Amazonia. We found that soil CO(2) fluxes were 38% higher near large trees than at control sites >10 m away from any tree (P < 0.0001). After adjusting for large tree presence, a multiple linear regression of soil temperature, bulk density, and liana DBH explained 19% of remaining CO(2) flux variability. Soil N(2)O fluxes adjacent to Caryocar villosum, Lecythis lurida, Schefflera morototoni, and Manilkara huberi were 84%-196% greater than Erisma uncinatum and Vochysia maxima, both Vochysiaceae. Tree species identity was the most important explanatory factor for N(2)O fluxes, accounting for more than twice the N(2)O flux variability as all other factors combined. Two observations suggest a mechanism for this finding: (1) sugar addition increased N(2)O fluxes near C. villosum twice as much (P < 0.05) as near Vochysiaceae and (2) species mean N(2)O fluxes were strongly negatively correlated with tree growth rate (P = 0.002). These observations imply that through enhanced belowground carbon allocation liana and tree species can stimulate soil CO(2) and N(2)O fluxes (by enhancing denitrification when carbon limits microbial metabolism). Alternatively, low N(2)O fluxes potentially result from strong competition of tree species with microbes for nutrients. Species-specific patterns in CO(2) and N(2)O fluxes demonstrate that plant species can influence soil biogeochemical processes in a diverse tropical forest.

A recent estimate of CO(2) outgassing from Amazonian wetlands suggests that an order of magnitude more CO(2) leaves rivers through gas exchange with the atmosphere than is exported to the ocean as organic plus inorganic carbon. However, the contribution of smaller rivers is still poorly understood, mainly because of limitations in mapping their spatial extent. Considering that the largest extension of the Amazon River network is composed of small rivers, the authors` objective was to elucidate their role in air-water CO(2) exchange by developing a geographic information system ( GIS)- based model to calculate the surface area covered by rivers with channels less than 100 m wide, combined with estimated CO(2) outgassing rates at the Ji-Parana River basin, in the western Amazon. Estimated CO(2) outgassing was the main carbon export pathway for this river basin, totaling 289 Gg C yr(-1), about 2.4 times the amount of carbon exported as dissolved inorganic carbon ( 121 Gg C yr(-1)) and 1.6 times the dissolved organic carbon export ( 185 Gg C yr(-1)). The relationships established here between drainage area and channel width provide a new model for determining small river surface area, allowing regional extrapolations of air - water gas exchange. Applying this model to the entire Amazon River network of channels less than 100 m wide ( third to fifth order), the authors calculate that the surface area of small rivers is 0.3 +/- 0.05 million km(2), and it is potentially evading to the atmosphere 170 +/- 42 Tg C yr(-1) as CO(2). Therefore, these ecosystems play an important role in the regional carbon balance.

A method for simultaneous determination of Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As e Pb in liquid chemical waste using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) technique was evaluated. A small sample amount (200 mu L) was dried on a 6.35 mu m thickness Mylar film at 60 degrees C and the analyses were carried out using an EDXRF spectrometer operated with an X-ray Mo tube (Zr filter) at 30 kV/20 mA. The acquisition time was 300 s and the Ga element was utilized as internal standard at 25 mg/L for quantitative analysis. The method trueness was assessed by spiking and the detection limit for those elements ranged from 0.39 to 1.7 mg/L. This method is notable because it assists the choice of the more appropriated waste treatment procedure, in which inter elemental interference is a matter of importance. In addition, this inexpensive method allows a non-destructive determination of the elements from (19)K to (92)U simultaneously.

The synthetic hydrous niobium oxide has been used for phosphate removal from the aqueous solutions. The kinetic data correspond very well to the pseudo second-order equation The phosphate removal tended. to increase with a decrease of pH. The equilibrium data describe very well the Langmuir isotherm. The peak appearing at 1050 cm(-1) in IR spectra after adsorption was attributed to the bending vibration of adsorbed phosphate. The adsorption capacities are high, and increased with increasing temperature. The evaluated Delta G degrees and Delta H degrees indicate the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the reactions. The adsorptions occur with increase in entropy (Delta S positive) value suggest increase in randomness at the solid-liquid interface during the adsorption. A phosphate desorbability of approximately 60% was observed with water at pH 12, which indicated a relatively strong bonding between the adsorbed phosphate and the sorptive sites on the surface of the adsorbent. CoB, CO(2)B, CoSi, Co(2)Si and CO(5)Si(2)B phases can be formed during heat-treatment of amorphous co-Si-B soft magnetic materials. Thus, it is important to determine their magnetic behavior as a function of applied field and temperature. In this study, polycrystalline single-phase samples of the above phases were produced via arc melting and heat-treatment under argon. The single-phase nature of the samples was confirmed via X-ray diffraction experiments. AC and DC magnetization measurements showed that Co(2)Si and CO(5)Si(2)B phases are paramagnetic. Minor amounts of either Co(2)Si or CoSi(2) in the CoSi-phase sample suggested a paramagnetic behavior of the CoSi-phase, however, it should be diamagnetic as shown in the literature. The diamagnetic behavior of the CoB phase was also confirmed. The paramagnetic behavior of CO(5)Si(2)B is for the first time reported. The magnetization results of the phase CO(2)B have a ferromagnetic signature already verified on previous NMR studies. A detailed set of magnetization measurements of this phase showed a change of the easy magnetization axis starting at 70K, with a temperature interval of about 13K at a very small field of 1 mT. As the strength of the field is increased the temperature interval is enlarged. The strength of field at which the magnetization saturates increases almost linearly as the temperature is increased above 70K. The room temperature total magnetostriction of the CO(2)B phase was determined to be 8 ppm at a field of 1T. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A set of stacked ribbon samples with the compositions Fe(85)Ga(15), Fe(78)Ni(7)Ga(15) and Fe(78)Co(7)Ga(15) were prepared. XRD on these ribbons show that the binary Fe(85)Ga(15) ribbon exhibits the disordered A2 structure where as the addition of Co and Ni leads to the appearance of an additional ordered DO(3) structure. A comparison of the ratio of the XRD-line intensities gave strong evidence of a (100) texture perpendicular to the ribbon surface. The optical studied microstructure supports these results because it shows a columnar grain growth parallel to the solidification direction-which is parallel to ribbon thickness. The highest magnetostriction was found for Fe(78)Ni(7)Ga(15) (370 ppm), while the Fe(78)Co(7)Ga(15) a smaller magnetostriction of 270 ppm was found. The enhancement of the magnetostriction is attributed to the (100) texture in these ribbons. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The influence of granulometry and organic treatment of a Brazilian montmorillonite (MMT) clay on the synthesis and properties of poly(styrene-co-n-butyl acrylate)/layered silicate nanocomposites was studied. Hybrid latexes of poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate)/MMT were synthesized via miniemulsion polymerization using either sodium or organically modified MMT. Five clay granulometries ranging from clay particles smaller than 75 mu m to colloidal size were selected. The size of the clay particles was evaluated by Specific surface area measurements (BET). Cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride was used as an organic modifier to enhance the clay compatibility with the monomer phase before polymerization and to improve the clav distribution and dispersion within the polymeric matrix after polymerization. The sodium and organically modified natural clays as well as the composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The latexes were characterized by dynamic light scattering. The mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties of the composites obtained were characterized by dynamical-mechanical analysis, thermogravimetry, and small amplitude oscillatory, shear tests, respectively. The results showed that smaller the size of the organically modified MMT, the higher the degree of exfoliation of nanoplatelets. Smooth copper coatings containing well-distributed silicon nitride particles were obtained by co-electrodeposition in acidic sulfate bath. The cathodic current density did not show significant influence on incorporated particle volume fraction, whereas the increase of particle concentration in the bath led to its decrease. The increase of stirring rate increased the amount of embedded particles. The microhardness of the composite layers was higher than that of pure copper deposits obtained under the same conditions due to dispersion-strengthening and copper matrix grain refinement and increased with the increase of incorporated particle volume fraction. The microhardness of composites also increased with the increase of current density due to copper matrix grain refining. The composite coatings presented higher strength but lower ductility than pure copper layers. Pure copper and composite coatings showed the same corrosion resistance in 0.5 wt.% H(2)SO(4) solution at room temperature. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection poses one of the greatest challenges to tuberculosis (TB) control, with TB killing more people with HIV infection than any other condition. The standards in this chapter cover provider-initiated HIV counselling and testing and the care of HIV-infected patients with TB. All TB patients who have not previously been diagnosed with HIV infection should be encouraged to have an HIV test. Failing to do so is to deny people access to the care and treatment they might need, especially in the context of the wider availability of treatments that prevent infections associated with HIV A clearly defined plan of care for those found to be co-infected with TB and HIV should be in place., with procedures to ensure that the patient has access to this care before offering routine testing for HIV in persons with TB. It is acknowledged that people caring for TB patients should ensure that those who are HIV positive are transferred for the appropriate ongoing care once their TB treatment has been completed. In some cases, referral for specialised HIV-related treatment and care may be necessary during treatment for TB. The aim of these standards is to enable patients to remain as healthy as possible, whatever their HIV status.
