A polyfluorene derivative of the PPV, poly(9,9`-n-dihexyl-2,7-fluorenedilvinylene-alt-1,4-phenylenevinylene), with a strong tendency to aggregation was blended with several members of a series composed by poly(alkyl methacrylate)s with the following substituents in the ester position: methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, isobutyl, n-butyl, and cyclohexyl. The de-aggregation effect in blends was studied by steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopy using several blend compositions. The efficiency of each dispersing phase was discussed in terms of the polymer miscibility, controlled by interaction parameters between the polyfluorene and every poly(alkyl methacrylate)s, here described using Hilde-brand solubility parameters. This work reports the structural and spectroscopy characterization of poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) films doped with neodymium (Nd) ions. Nd-PSS films were processed using the acid of poly(styrene sulfonate) - H-PSS and neodymium nitrate - Nd(NO(3))(3); the maximum incorporation of Nd ions in the polymeric matrix was equal 19.3%. The absorption in the UV-Vis-NIR spectral region presents typical electronic transitions of Nd 3, ions, with well resolved peaks. The infrared spectra present the transition bands of PSS with characteristic line shape broadening, and the presence of vibrational modes of N-O groups in the range of 1400-720 cm(-1), prove the permanence of Nd(NO(3))(x), with x = 1, 2 and/or 3. in the H-PSS matrix. UV-Vis site selective photoluminescence data indicate that the incorporation of Nd 31 introduces a blue shift in PSS emission (325-800 nm), decreasing the interaction between adjacent PSS lateral groups (aromatic rings). Nd(3+) reabsorption and energy transfer effects between the PSS matrix and Nd(3+) were also observed. The IR emission of Nd-PSS films at 1076 rim ((4)F(3/2) -> (4)I(11/2)) present constant efficiency, independent on Nd(3+) concentration. The Judd-Ofelt theory was employed to analyze radiative properties. The excitation spectra prove the energy transfer between the polymeric matrix and Nd(3+). Complex impedance data was used to probe relaxation processes during the charge transport within the polymeric matrix. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The reaction of dimethylthallium(III) hydroxide with picolinic acid (Hpic), 3-hydroxypicolinic acid (H(2)3hpic) and 6-hydroxypicolinic acid (H(2)6hpic) in an aqueous/methanol mixture afforded the complexes [TlMe(2)(pic)] (1), [TlMe(2)(H3hpic)] (2) and [TlMe(2)(H6hpic)] (3), respectively. Complex 3`, [NaTlMe(2)(6hpic)(2)](n), was obtained as a minor product from a methanolic solution of 3. Compounds 1-3 were characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy and, in the cases of 1, 2 and Y, by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 3` is the first example of an H6hpic(-) heterobimetallic compound to be isolated. The (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra of 1 and 2 are also discussed. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The complex mer-[RuCl(3)(dppb)(H(2)O)] [dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane] was used as a precursor in the synthesis of the complexes tc-[RuCl(2)(CO)(2)(dppb)], ct-[RuCl(2)(CO)(2)(dppb)]. cis-[RuCl(2)(dppb)(Cl-bipy)], [RuCl(2Ac4mT)(dppb)] (2Ac4mT = N(4)-meta-tolyl-2-acetylpyridine thiosemicarbazone ion) and trans-[RuCl(2)(dppb)(mang)] (mang = mangiferin or 1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone-C2-beta-D-glucoside) complexes. For the synthesis of Run complexes, the Ru(III) atom in mer-[RuCl(3)(dppb)(H(2)O)] may be reduced by H(2)(g), forming the intermediate [Ru(2)Cl(4)(dppb)(2)], or by a ligand (such as H2Ac4mT or mangiferin). The X-ray structures of the cis-[RuCl(2)(dppb)(Cl-bipy)], tc-[RuCl(2)(CO)(2)(dppb)] and [RuCl(2Ac4mT)(dPpb)] complexes were determined. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The ""Ru(P-P)"" unit (P-P = diphosphine) is recognized to be an important core in catalytic species for hydrogenation of unsaturated organic substrates. Thus, in this study we synthesized six new complexes containing this core, including the binuclear complex [(dppb)(CO)Cl(2)Ru-pz-RuCl(2)(CO)(dPPb)] (pz = pyrazine) which can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of cationic carbonyl species of general formula [RuCl(CO)(dppb)(N-N)]PF(6) (N-N = diimine). Complexes with the formula (RuCl(py)(dppb)(N-N)]PF(6) were synthesized by exhaustive electrolysis of these carbonyl compounds or from the precursors [RuCl(2)(dppb)(N-N)]. The new complexes were characterized by microanalysis, conductivity measurements, IR and (31)P{(1)H)} NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and X-ray crystallography. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The reaction Of Cu(ClO(4))(2)center dot 6H(2)O with dimethylglyoxime (H(2)dmg) in a 1:1 mole ratio in aqueous methanol at room temperature affords the dinuclear complex [Cu(2)(mu-Hdmg)(4)] (1). Reaction of 1 with [Cu(bpy)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (bpy = 2,2`-bipyridine) in a 1:1 mole ratio in aqueous methanol at room temperature yields the tetranuclear complex [Cu(2)(mu-HdMg)(2)(mu-dMg)(2)(bpy)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (2). The direct reaction of Cu(ClO(4))(2)center dot 6H(2)O with H(2)dmg and bpy in a 2:21 mole ratio in aqueous methanol at room temperature also yields 2 quantitatively. The complexes 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Unlike the binding in Ni/Co-dmg, two different types of N-O bridging modes during the oxime based metallacycle formation and stacking of square planar units have been identified in these complexes. The neutral dinuclear complex 1 has CuN(4)O coordination spheres and complex 2 consists of a dicationic [Cu(2)(mu-HdMg)(2)(mu-dMg)(2)(bpy)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](2+) unit and two uncoordinated ClO(4)(-) anions having CuN(4)O and CuN(2)O(3) coordination spheres. The two copper(II) ions are at a distance of 3.846(8) angstrom in 1 for the trans out of plane link and at 3.419(10) and 3.684(10) angstrom in 2 for the trans out of plane and cis in plane arrangements, respectively. The average Cu-N(oxime) distances are 1.953 and 1.935 angstrom, respectively. The average basal and apical Cu-N(oxime) distances are 1.945, 2.295 and 2.429 angstrom. The UV-Vis spectra of 2 is similar to the spectrum of the reaction mixture of 1 and [Cu(bpy)(H(2)O)(2)](2+). Variable temperature magnetic properties measurement shows that the interaction between the paramagnetic copper centers in complex I is antiferromagnetic in nature. The EPR spectra of frozen solution of the complexes at 77 K consist of axially symmetric fine-structure transitions (Delta M(S) = 1) and half-field signals (Delta M(S) = 2) at ca. 1600 G, suggesting the presence of appreciable Cu-Cu interactions. The adsorption of pyridine (py) on Fe, Co, Ni and Ag electrodes was studied using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to gain insight into the nature of the adsorbed species. The wavenumber values and relative intensities of the SERS bands were compared to the normal Raman spectrum of the chemically prepared transition metal complexes. Raman spectra of model clusters M(4)(py) (four metal atoms bonded to one py moiety) and M(4)(alpha-pyridil) where M = Ag, Fe, Co or Ni were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) and used to interpret the experimental SERS results. The similarity of the calculated M(4)(py) spectra with the experimental SERS spectra confirm the molecular adsorption of py on the surface of the metallic electrodes. All these results exclude the formation of adsorbed alpha-pyridil species, as suggested previously. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A novel poly(p-xylylene), PPX, derivative bearing phenyl side groups was electrochemically synthesized in 85% yield. The polymer, poly(2-phenyl-p-xylylene) (PPPX), presented a major fraction (88%) soluble in common organic solvents. It showed to be thermally resistant up to 140 degrees C. UV-VIS analysis revealed an Egap of similar to 3.0 eV. Gas sensors made from thin films of CSA doped PPPX deposited on interdigitated electrodes exhibited significant changes in electrical conductance upon exposure to five carbonyl compounds: acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde. benzaldehyde, acetone and butanone. Three-dimensional plots of relative response vs. time of half-response vs. time of half-recovery showed good discrimination between the five carbonyl Compounds tested. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Excited-state dynamics in fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Me(4)phen)(cis-L)](+) (Me(4)phen = 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, L = 4-styrylpyridine (stpy) or 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)) were investigated by steady-state and time-resolved techniques. A complex equilibrium among three closely lying excited states, 3IL(cis-L), (3)MLCT(Re -> me4phen), and (3)IL(Me4phen), has been established. Under UV irradiation, cis-to-trans isomerization of coordinated cis-L is observed with a quantum yield of 0.15 in acetonitrile solutions. This photoreaction competes with radiative decay from (3)MLCT(Re -> Me4phen) and (3)IL(Me4phen) excited states, leading to a decrease in the emission quantum yield relative to the nonisomerizable complex fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Me(4)phen)(bpa)](+) (bpa = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane). From temperature-dependent time-resolved emission measurements in solution and in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films, energy barriers (Delta E(a)) for interconversion between (3)MLCT(Re -> me4Phen) and (3)IL(Me4phen) emitting states were determined. For L = cis-stpy, Delta E(a) = 11 (920 cm(-1)) and 15 kJ mol(-1) (1254 cm(-1)) in 5:4 propionitrile/butyronitrile and PMMA, respectively. For L = cis-bpe, Delta E(a) = 13 kJ mol(-1) (1087 cm(-1)) in 5:4 propionitrile/butyronitrile. These energy barriers are sufficient to decrease the rate constant for internal conversion from higher-lying (3)IL(me4phen) state to (3)MLCT(Re -> Me4phen), k(i) congruent to 10(6) s(-1). The decrease in rate allows for the observation of intraligand phosphorescence, even in fluid medium at room temperature. Our results provide additional insight into the role of energy gap and excited-state dynamics on the photochemical and photophysical properties of Re(I) polypyridyl complexes.

Raman spectra of polymer electrolytes based on poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGdME) with LiClO(4), PEGdME/LiClO(4), and the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, PEGdME/[bmim]PF(6), are compared. Raman spectroscopy suggests stronger interactions in PEGdME/LiClO(4) than PEGdmE/[bmim]PF(6), thus corroborating previous results obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. Quantum Chemistry methods have been used to calculate vibrational frequencies and the equilibrium structure of segments of the polymer chain around the cation. A consistent picture has been obtained from Raman spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations for these polymer electrolytes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. We report the synthesis and spectroscopic/electrochemical properties of iron(II) complexes of polydentate Schiff bases generated from 2-acetylpyridine and 1,3-diaminopropane, acetylpyrazine and 1,3-diaminopropane, and from 2-acetylpyridine and L-histidine. The complexes exhibit bis(diimine)iron(II) chromophores in association with pyrazine, pyridine or imidazole groups displaying contrasting pi-acceptor properties. In spite of their open geometry, their properties are much closer to those of macrocyclic tetraimineiron(II) complexes. An electrochemical/spectroscopic correlation between E degrees(Fe(III/II)) and the energies of the lowest MLCT band has been observed, reflecting the stabilization of the HOMO levels as a consequence of the increasing backbonding effects in the series of compounds. Mossbauer data have also confirmed the similarities in their electronic structure, as deduced from the spectroscopic and theoretical data. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Polystyrene surfaces were conditioned with surfactin and rhamnolipid biosurfactants and then assessed regarding the attachment of Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and Micrococcus lute us. The effect of different temperatures (35, 25, and 4 degrees C) on the anti-adhesive activity was also studied. Microbial adhesion to solvents and contact angle measurements were performed to characterize bacteria and material surfaces. The results showed that surfactin was able to inhibit bacterial adhesion in all the conditions analyzed, giving a 63-66% adhesion reduction in the bacterial strains at 4 degrees C. Rhamnolipid promoted a slight decrease in the attachment of S. aureus. The anti-adhesive activity of surfactin increased with the decrease in temperature, showing that this is an important parameter to be considered in surface conditioning tests. Surfactin showed good potential as an anti-adhesive compound that can be explored to protect surfaces from microbial contamination.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact and fracture resistance of acrylic resins: a heat-polymerized resin, a high-impact resin and an experimental polymethyl methacrylate with elastomer in different proportions (10, 20, 40 and 60%). 120 specimens were fabricated and submitted to conventional heat-polymerization. For impact test, a Charpy-type impact tester was used. Fracture resistance was assessed with a 3-point bending test by using a mechanical testing machine. Ten specimens were used for each test. Fracture (MPa) and impact resistance values (J.m-1) were submitted to ANOVA - Bonferroni's test - 5% significance level. Materials with higher amount of elastomer had statistically significant differences regarding to impact resistance (p < 0.05). Fracture resistance was superior (p < 0.01) for high-resistance acrylic resin. The increase in elastomer concentration added to polymethyl methacrylate raised the impact resistance and decreased the fracture resistance. Processing the material by injection decreased its resistance to impact and fracture.
