An efficient reddish orange emission MgSrAl(10)O(17):Sm(3+) phosphor was prepared by the combustion method. The phosphor has been characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis measurements. Photoluminescence spectrum revealed that samarium ions are present in trivalent oxidation states. The phosphor exhibits two thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) peaks at 210 degrees C and 450 degrees C. Electron spin resonance studies were carried out to identify the defect centres responsible for the TSL process in MgSrAl(10)O(17):Sm(3+) phosphor. Three defect centres have been identified in irradiated phosphor and these centres are tentatively assigned to an O(-) ion and F(+) centres. O(-) ion (hole centre) correlates with the 210 degrees C TSL peak while one of the F+ centres (electron centre) appears to relate to the 450 degrees C TSL peak. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. In this work we used the conversion process of a precursor polymer into polyparaphenylenevinylene (PPV) at low temperatures in order to control the effective conjugation degree of spin-casted PPV films. The absorption and emission spectra of the films were studied by following a partial substitution of chloride counterions from poly(xylylidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT), used as a precursor, by sodium acid dodecyl benzenesulfonate (DBS), added as a surfactant salt. Upon controlling the DBS amount and conversion temperature (T-c) of PTHT/DBS to PPV films, the band gap of PPV changed from 409 to 506 nm, and 505 to 532 nm, values obtained from absorbance and emission measurements, respectively. Based on these experimental data, we proposed a physical model which represents the chemical structure of PPV as a distribution of conjugated chain segments (like oligomers) alternated by non-conjugated segments (structural defects and/or from the precursor polymer). The propagation of an optical beam through dielectric media induces changes in the refractive index, An, which causes self-focusing or self-defocusing. In the particular case of ion-doped solids, there are thermal and non-thermal lens effects, where the latter is due to the polarizability difference, Delta alpha, between the excited and ground states, the so-called population lens (PL) effect. PL is a pure electronic contribution to the nonlinearity, while the thermal lens (TL) effect is caused by the conversion of part of the absorbed energy into heat. In time-resolved measurements such as Z-scan and TL transient experiments, it is not easy to separate these two contributions to nonlinear refractive index because they usually have similar response times. In this work, we performed time-resolved measurements using both Z-scan and mode mismatched TL in order to discriminate thermal and electronic contributions to the laser-induced refractive index change of the Nd3+-doped Strontium Barium Niobate (SrxBa1-xNb2O6) laser crystal. Combining numerical simulations with experimental results we could successfully distinguish between the two contributions to An. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a minor but essential modification to the CODEX 1D-MAS exchange experiment. The new CONTRA method, which requires minor changes of the original sequence only, has advantages over the previously introduced S-CODEX, since it is less sensitive to artefacts caused by finite pulse lengths. The performance of this variant, including the finite pulse effect, was confirmed by SIMPSON calculations and demonstrated on a number of dynamic systems. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Cerium doped yttrium aluminate perovskite YAlO(3) (YAP) powders are pursued as interesting alternatives to bulk crystals for application in scintillating devices. The emissions of these materials in the near-UV and visible spectral regions originate from electric dipole transitions between 4f and 5d energy levels of Ce(3+) and largely depend on the environment occupied by the ion. In search for improved synthesis conditions that can lead to phase pure powders with optimized structural and spectroscopic characteristics, in this work we have employed the polymeric precursor (Pechini) method to prepare crystalline and amorphous YAP:Ce powders doped with 1-10 mol% Ce(3+). Interesting composite materials were also obtained by dispersing some of the YAP:Ce powders in silica xerogels. A comparative structural and spectroscopic study of all the samples was done by XRD, FT-IR, emission, excitation and excited state lifetime measurements. In agreement with previous reports, excitation at 296 nm results in intense emission in the range 315-425 nm with an average decay time of 30 ns. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we studied the properties of absorption and emission line shape of layer-by-layer (LBL) poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) on indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode. To minimize the PPV thermal conversion effects during the polymer processing, we used a less aggressive leaving group in the precursor polymer; minimizing electrode degradation. LBL ITO/PPV films showed the same absorption and emission line shape compared with LBL PPV films deposited on non-metallic substrates (glass). With this analysis we indirectly observe the decrease in the ITO degradation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique was used to analyze quantitatively the microscopic morphology of the film surface. Results indicated that the substrate topology is not affected, to a large extent, by the use of dodecylbenzensulfonate (DBS) ion. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The synthesis, structural investigation, and photophysical properties of the complex [Tb(TTA)(2)(NO(3)) (TPPO)(2)] are reported. Unlike the analog tris-diketonate complex [Tb(TTA)(3)(TPPO)(2)], the new complex presents abnormally high luminescence intensity centered on the terbium ion. Our results clearly suggest a higher energy transfer efficiency from the TEA antenna ligand to the Tb(III) ion in the bis-diketonate complex compared with that in the tris-diketonate complex. A mechanism involving the increasing of triplet state energy when one TTA ligand is replaced by the NO(3)(-) group in the first coordination sphere is suggested and experimentally investigated to explain the anomalous luminescence properties of the new complex [Tb(TTA)(2)(NO(3))(TPPO)(2)]. Osmotic dehydration is becoming more popular as a complementary treatment in the processing of dehydrated foods, since it presents some advantages such as minimising heat damage to the colour and flavour, inhibiting enzymatic browning and thus dispensing the addition of sulphite and, mainly, reducing energy costs. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of using inverted sugar and sucrose syrups as osmotic agents in the dehydration of mango. The conditions used in the dehydration process were: syrup/fruit ratio of 3:1 (v/w); temperature of 45ºC and constant stirring. The in natura and osmo-dehydrated fruits were evaluated in relation to pH, moisture content, water activity (a w) and soluble solids (ºBrix). Solids incorporation and loss in mass after the dehydration process were also determined. The sensory acceptance of the in natura and osmo-dehydrated fruits was determined for the attributes of aroma, flavour, texture and overall acceptance using a hedonic scale. Osmotic dehydration resulted in a reduction in moisture content and water activity, an increase in Brix and maintenance of the pH. The treatment with inverted sugar syrup resulted in more significant alterations in moisture content, a w, Brix, solids incorporation and loss in mass than the treatment with sucrose syrup. Mangos osmo-dehydrated with inverted sugar (55.3% inversion rate) syrup obtained acceptance similar to in natura mangos, this treatment being considered the most adequate for dehydration purposes.

Second record of bioluminescence in larvae of Xantholinus Dejean, (Staphylinidae, Xantholinini) from Brazil. Bioluminescent Xantholinus larvae (Xantholinini, Staphylinidae) were collected in the Cerrado biome of Mato Grosso state, Brazil. These larvae are morphologically similar to the first bioluminescent larvae of this genus collected in the Atlantic Forest in São Paulo state; however they differ by their bioluminescent emission.

The aim of this study was to determine how abiotic factors drive the phytoplankton community in a water supply reservoir within short sampling intervals. Samples were collected at the subsurface (0.1 m) and bottom of limnetic (8 m) and littoral (2 m) zones in both the dry and rainy seasons. The following abiotic variables were analyzed: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, turbidity, pH, total nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, total phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus and orthophosphate. Phytoplankton biomass was determined from biovolume values. The role abiotic variables play in the dynamics of phytoplankton species was determined by means of Canonical Correspondence Analysis. Algae biomass ranged from 1.17×10(4) to 9.21×10(4) µg.L-1; cyanobacteria had biomass values ranging from 1.07×10(4) to 8.21×10(4) µg.L-1. High availability of phosphorous, nitrogen limitation, alkaline pH and thermal stability all favored cyanobacteria blooms, particularly during the dry season. Temperature, pH, total phosphorous and turbidity were key factors in characterizing the phytoplankton community between sampling times and stations. Of the species studied, Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii populations were dominant in the phytoplankton in both the dry and rainy seasons. We conclude that the phytoplankton was strongly influenced by abiotic variables, particularly in relation to seasonal distribution patterns.

Absolute dating methods have been used in chronological studies of geological processes and sedimentary units of Quaternary age in Central Amazonia, Brazil. Although radiocarbon dating has been very useful in archaeological research and soil studies, the temporal interval of this method is inefficient in evaluating the sedimentation aspects and geological events from the beginning of the Quaternary in the Amazon basin. The use of crystal luminescence dating has been one of the most promising tool for determining the absolute dating of Quaternary deposits in the Amazonian region. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, following the MAR and SAR protocols, in a tectonic-sedimentary study of Quaternary fluvial deposits in the confluence area of the Negro and Solimões rivers, indicated ages from 1.3 (Holocene) to about 67.4 kyears (Late Pleistocene) for these sediments. Low radioactive isotope concentrations were found about 2ppm for 235U and 238U; 5ppm for 232Th; and the 40K concentrations were almost zero. A comparison was made between MAR and SAR protocols taking into account the fluvial depositional process.

The heterometal alkoxide [FeCl{Ti2(OPr i)9}] (1) was employed as a single source precursor for the preparation of Fe/Ti oxides under inert atmosphere. Three different synthetic procedures were adopted in the processing of 1, either employing aqueous HNO3 or HCl solutions, or in the absence of mineral acids. Products were characterised by powder X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and Raman, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Mössbauer spectroscopies. Oxide products contained titanium(IV) and either iron(III) or iron(II), depending on reaction conditions and thermal treatment temperatures. An interesting iron(III)→iron(II) reduction was observed at 1000 ºC in the HNO3-containing system, leading to the detection of ilmenite (FeTiO3). SEM/EDS studies revealed a highly heterogeneous metal distribution in all products, possibly related to the presence of a significant content of carbon and of structural defects (oxygen vacancies) in the solids.

Herein, the immobilization of some Schiff base-copper(II) complexes in smectite clays is described as a strategy for the heterogenization of homogeneous catalysts. The obtained materials were characterized by spectroscopic techniques, mostly UV/Vis, EPR, XANES and luminescence spectroscopy. SWy-2 and synthetic Laponite clays were used for the immobilization of two different complexes that have previously shown catalytic activity in the dismutation of superoxide radicals, and disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide. The obtained results indicated the occurrence of an intriguing intramolecular redox process involving copper and the imine ligand at the surface of the clays. These studies are supported by computational calculations.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of genetic polymorphism of kappa-casein, breed and seasonality on the physicochemical characteristics, composition and stability of milk in commercial dairy herds. A total of 879 milk and blood samples were collected from 603 Holstein and 276 Girolando cows, obtained during rainy and dry seasons. Milk samples were analyzed to determine the physicochemical characteristics, composition and ethanol stability, while blood samples were subjected to polymerase chain reaction to identify the kappa-casein genotype. The frequencies of genotypes AA, AB and BB of k-casein were respectively, 66.83, 31.84 and 1.33% for Holstein, and 71.38, 27.90 and 0.72% for the Girolando cows, respectively. The A allele was more frequent than the B allele, both for Holstein (0.827 and 0.173) and Girolando cows (0.853 and 0.147), respectively. Cows of AB and BB genotypes showed a higher milk fat content compared to the AA genotype. There was an interaction between breed and seasonality on the concentration of milk urea with higher values for Holstein and Girolando cows in the rainy and dry season, respectively. The levels of lactose, total solids, crude protein, true protein, casein and the casein:true protein ratio were higher during the dry season, while during the rainy season, the somatic cell count and milk urea concentration were higher. There was no association between milk stability and k-casein genotypes, but Holstein cows showed higher milk stability than Girolando cows, and milk was more stable during the rainy season than during the dry season.

Luminescence properties of Eu(3+) doped germanate glasses containing either silver or gold nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated for excitation at 405 nm. Enhanced emissions and luminescence quenching of the Eu(3+) transitions in the range from 570 to 720 nm were observed for samples having various concentrations of metallic NPs. Electric-dipole and magnetic-dipole transitions that originate from the Eu(3+) level (5)D(0) exhibit large enhancement due to the presence of the metallic NPs. The results suggest that the magnetic response of rare-earth doped metal-dielectric composites at optical frequencies can be as strong as their electric response due to the confinement of the optical magnetic field.
