The silicone implant has been widely used in facial aesthetic surgery for chin augmentation. A case of a 71-year-old woman with a lesion in the anterior mandibular region detected by radiographies and suggestive of benign soft tissue tumor is presented. The patient denied previous surgical intervention in the mental area. A biopsy was performed and initially interpreted as low-grade liposarcoma. After an immunohistochemistry study showing CD-68-positive cells and complementary information regarding a silicone implant for chin augmentation, the definitive diagnosis was silicone granuloma. This case reinforces that silicone implant in the mandibular region can be misdiagnosed as malignant tumor and the correct diagnosis is heavily dependent on close collaboration between clinician and pathologist in order to avoid unnecessary surgical intervention. Introduction: The maxillary anterior teeth are the most important to facial esthetics because they are the first to show on a smile. Therefore, stability of the maxillary anterior teeth alignment is an important issue. The objective of this study was to compare the stability of maxillary anterior tooth alignment in Class I and Class II Division 1 malocclusions. Methods: The sample comprised dental casts of 70 patients with Class I and Class II Division 1 malocclusions and a minimum of 3 mm of maxillary anterior crowding measured by an irregularity index. The patients were treated with extractions and evaluated at pretreatment and posttreatment and at least 5 years after treatment. The sample was divided into 3 groups: group 1, Class I malocclusion treated with 4 first premolar extractions comprising 30 subjects, with an initial age of 13.16 years and 8.59 mm of initial maxillary irregularity; group 2, Class II malocclusion treated with 4 first premolar extractions comprising 20 subjects, with an initial age of 12.95 years and 11.10 mm of maxillary irregularity; and group 3, Class II malocclusion treated with 2 first maxillary premolar extractions comprising 20 subjects, with an initial age of 13.09 years and 9.68 mm of maxillary irregularity. Results: The decrease in the maxillary irregularity index was significantly greater in group 2 than in group 1 during treatment. The stability of maxillary anterior alignment was 88.12% over the long term; 77% of the linear displacement of the anatomic contact points tended to return to their original positions. Conclusions: Stability of maxillary anterior alignment between the 3 groups was similar. The stability of maxillary anterior alignment was high over the long term, but a high percentage of teeth tended to return to their original positions. Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the menstrual cycle and oral contraceptive (OC) intake on the pressure pain threshold (PPT) of masticatory muscles in patients with masticatory myofascial pain (MFP). Study design. The sample was composed of 36 women, divided into 4 groups, according to the presence of MFP and the intake of OC (15 patients had MFP [7 taking OC] and 21 were pain-free controls [8 taking OC]). The algometer-based PPT of masseter and temporalis, and the record of subjective pain by visual analog scale (VAS) were determined during 2 consecutives menstrual cycles at 4 phases (menstrual, follicular, periovulatory, and luteal). A 3-way ANOVA for repeated measurements, Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman, and Dunn tests, with a 5% significant level analyzed the data. Results. PPT was significantly lower in MFP patients when compared with controls throughout the experiment (P < .001). The menstrual phases did not influence PPT (P > .05), while the intake of OC seems to raise PPT levels for the left temporalis (P = .01) and right masseter (P = .04). VAS was, in general, higher at the menstrual phase Conclusions. Different phases of the menstrual cycle have no influence on PPT values, regardless of the presence of a previous condition, as masticatory myofascial pain, while the intake of OC is associated with decreased levels of reported pain.

Background. This study aims to compare the alterations in the methylation profiles of E-cadherin in oral cancer, especially in tumors with lowest metatastic potential. Methods. Nine oral verrucous carcinomas (VCs), 20 oral well-differentiated squamous cell carcinomas without lymph node involvement (SCC-pNO), and 17 with lymph node involvement (SCC-pN+) were analyzed using methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical expression of E-cadherin gene. Results. The immunohistochemical expression of E-cadherin in VC was significantly higher (p = .016) when compared with SCC-pNO and SCC-pN+ groups. The E-cadherin gene methylation was not correlated with its abnormal immunohistochemical expression in VC and SCC-pNO. All tumors of the SCC-pN+ group with unmethylated E-cadherin gene showed significant loss of E-cadherin immunoexpression (p = .044). Conclusions. The E-cadherin gene methylation presence in tumors with lowest invasive and metastatic potential, such as VC, suggests the early involvement of this epigenetic event in the multistep progression of the oral carcinogenesis. Heme oxygenase-carbon monoxide-cGMP (HO-CO-cGMP) pathway has been reported to be involved in peripheral and spinal modulation of inflammatory pain. However, the involvement of this pathway in the modulation of acute painful stimulus in the absence of inflammation remains unknown. Thus, we evaluated the involvement of the HO-CO-cGMP pathway in nociception by means the of analgesia index (AI) in the tail flick test. Rats underwent surgery for implantation of unilateral guide cannula directed toward the lateral ventricle and after the recovery period (5-7 days) were subjected to the measures of baseline tail flick test Animals were divided into groups to assess the effect of intracerebroventricular administration (i.c.v.) of the following compounds: ZnDPBG (HO inhibitor) or vehicle (Na(2)CO(3)), heme-lysinate (substrate overload) or vehicle (L-lysine), or the selective inhibitor of soluble guanilate cyclase ODQ or vehicle (DMSO 1%) following the administration of heme-lysinate or vehicle. Heme overload increased AI, indicating an antinociceptive role of the pathway. This response was attenuated by i.c.v. pretreatment with the HO inhibitor ZnDPBG. In addition, this effect was dependent on cGMP activity, since the pretreatment with ODQ blocked the increase in the AI. Because CO produces most of its actions via cGMP, these data strongly imply that CO is the HO product involved in the antinociceptive response. This modulation seems to be phasic rather than tonic, since i.c.v. treatment with ZnDPBG or ODQ did not alter the AI. Therefore, we provide evidence consistent with the notion that HO-CO-cGMP pathway plays a key phasic antinociceptive role modulating noninflammatory acute pain. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The aims of this study were 1) to verify how close to the theoretically presumed areas are the areas of enamel microbiopsies carried out in vivo or in exfoliated teeth; 2) to test whether the etching solution penetrates beyond the tape borders: 3) to test whether the etching solution demineralizes the enamel in depth. 24 shed upper primary central incisors were randomly divided into two groups: the Rehydrated Teeth Group and the Dry Teeth Group. An enamel microbiopsy was performed, and the enamel microbiopsies were then analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEMI) and Polarizing Microscopy (PM). Quantitative birefringence measurements were performed. The ""true"" etched area was determined by measuring the etched enamel using the NIH Image analysis program. Enamel birefringence was compared using the paired t test. There was a statistically significant difference when the etched areas in the Rehydrated teeth were compared with those of the Dry teeth (p = 0.04). The etched areas varied from -11.6% to 73.5% of the presumed area in the Rehydrated teeth, and from 6.6% to 61.3% in the Dry teeth. The mean percentage of variation in each group could be used as a correction factor for the etched area. Analysis of PM pictures shows no evidence of in-depth enamel demineralization by the etching solution. No statistically significant differences in enamel birefringence were observed between values underneath and outside the microbiopsy area in the same tooth, showing that no mineral loss occurred below the enamel superficial layer. Our data showed no evidence of in-depth enamel demineralization by the etching solution used in the enamel microbiopsy proposed for primary enamel. This study also showed a variation in the measured diameter of the enamel microbiopsy in nineteen teeth out of twenty four, indicating that in most cases the etching solution penetrated beyond the tape borders.
