We show a simple strategy to obtain all efficient enzymatic broelectrochemical device, in which urease was immobilized oil electroactive nanostructured membranes (ENMs) made with polyaniline and silver nanoparticles (AgNP) stabilized in polyvinyl alcohol (PAni/PVA-AgNP). Fabrication of the modified electrodes comprised the chemical deposition of polyaniline followed by drop-coating of PVA-AgNP and urease, resulting in a final ITO/PAni/PVA-AgNP/urease electrode Configuration. For comparison. the electrochemical performance of ITO/PAni/urease electrodes (without Ag nanoparticles) was also studied. The performance of the modified electrodes toward Urea hydrolysis was investigated via amperometric measurements, revealing a fast increase in cathodic current with a well-defined peak upon addition of urea to the electrolytic solution. The cathodic currents for the ITO/PAni/PVA-AgNP urease electrodes were significantly higher than for the ITO/PAni/urease electrodes. The friendly environment provided by the ITO/PAni/PVA-AgNP electrode to the immobilized enzyme promoted efficient catalytic conversion of urea into ammonium and bicarbonate tons. Using the Michaelis-Menten kinetics equation, a K(M)(aPP) of 2.7 mmol L(-1) was obtained. indicating that the electrode architecture employed may be advantageous for fabrication of enzymatic devices with improved biocatalytic properties. The combination of luminescent polymers and suitable energy-accepting materials may lead to a molecular-level control of luminescence in nanostructured films. In this study, the properties of layer-by-layer (LbL) films of polyp-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) were investigated with steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopies, where fluorescence quenching was controlled by interposing inert polyelectrolyte layers between the PPV donor and acceptor layers made with either Congo Red (CR) or nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc). The dynamics of the excited state of PPV was affected by the energy-accepting layers, thus confirming the presence of resonant energy transfer mechanisms. Owing to the layered structured of both energy donor and acceptor units, energy transfer varied with the distance between layers, r, according to 1/r(n) with n = 2 or 3, rather than with 1/r(6) predicted by the Forster theory for interacting point dipoles.

The photoactivation of a photosensitizer is the initial step in photodynamic therapy (PDT) where photochemical reactions result in the production of reactive oxygen species and eventually cell death. In addition to oxidizing biomolecules, some of these photochemical reactions lead to photosensitizer degradation at a rate dependent on the oxygen concentration among other factors. We investigated photodegradation of Photogem A (R) (28 mu M), a hematoporphyrin derivative, at different oxygen concentrations (9.4 to 625.0 mu M) in aqueous solution. The degradation was monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy. The degradation rate (M/s) increases as the oxygen concentration increases when the molar ratio of oxygen to PhotogemA (R) is greater than 1. At lower oxygen concentrations (< 25 mu M) an inversion of this behavior was observed. The data do not fit a simple kinetic model of first-order dependence on oxygen concentration. This inversion of the degradation rate at low oxygen concentration has not previously been demonstrated and highlights the relationship between photosensitizer and oxygen concentrations in determining the photobleaching mechanism(s). The findings demonstrate that current models for photobleaching are insufficient to explain completely the effects at low oxygen concentration.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the hardness of a dental composite resin submitted to temperature changes before photo-activation with two light-curing unite (LCUs). Five samples (4 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) for each group were made with pre-cure temperatures of 37, 54, and 60A degrees C. The samples were photo-activated with a conventional quartz-tungsten-halogen (QTH) and blue LED LCUs during 40 s. The hardness Vickers test (VHN) was performed on the top and bottom surfaces of the samples. According to the interaction between light-curing unit and different pre-heating temperatures of composite resin, only the light-curing unit provided influences on the mean values of initial Vickers hardness. The light-curing unit based on blue LED showed hardness mean values more homogeneous between the top and bottom surfaces. The hardness mean values were not statistically significant difference for the pre-cure temperature used. According to these results, the pre-heating of the composite resin provide no influence on Vickers hardness mean values, however the blue LED showed a cure more homogeneous than QTH LCU.

The phase formation kinetics of YAP (YAlO(3)) synthesized through the polymeric precursor method was investigated by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy. We demonstrated that the YAP synthesis is highly dependent on the heat and mass transport during all stages of the synthesis route. In the first stages, during the preparation of amorphous precursor, ""hot spots"" need to be suppressed to avoid the occurrence of chemical inhomogeneities. Very high heating rates combined with small amorphous particles are advantageous in the last stage during the formation of crystalline phase. We were able to synthesize nanosized particles of YAP single phase at temperatures around 1100 A degrees C for future preparation of phosphors or ceramics for optics.

CdS is one of the most important II-VI semiconductors, with applications in solar cells, optoelectronics and electronic devices. CdS nanoparticles were synthesized via microwave-assisted solvothermal technique. Structural and morphological characterization revealed the presence of crystalline structures presenting single phase with different morphologies such as ""nanoflowers"" and nanoplates depending on the solvent used. Optical characterization was made by diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy, revealing the influence of the different solvents on the optical properties due to structural defects generated during synthesis. It is proposed that these defects are related to sulfur vacancies, with higher concentration of defects for the sample synthesized in ethylene glycol in comparison with the one synthesized in ethylene diamine. A detailed investigation was made into the origin of photoluminescence in an alternate multilayer system of SrZrO(3) (SZO) and SrTiO(3) (STO) thin films. XRD and room-temperature PL studies revealed a high consistency with respect to improved crystallization at elevated temperatures. The photoluminescence behaviour of SZO/STO multilayered system consists in the superposition of independent photoluminescence emissions of both STO and SZO films. Based on the present results and on previous experimental and theoretical data, we propose that the origin of the photoluminescence emission results from structural disorder generated by the presence of distortions in the ideal constituent clusters of these materials. This work demonstrates that the detuning of the fs-laser spectrum from the two-photon absorption band of organic materials can be used to reach further control of the two-photon absorption by pulse spectral phase manipulation. We investigate the coherent control of the two-photon absorption in imidazole-thiophene core compounds presenting distinct two-photon absorption spectra. The coherent control, performed using pulse phase shaping and genetic algorithm, exhibited different growth rates for each sample. Such distinct trends were explained by calculating the two-photon absorption probability considering the intrapulse interference mechanism, taking into account the two-photon absorption spectrum of the samples. Our results indicate that tuning the relative position between the nonlinear absorption and the pulse spectrum can be used as a novel strategy to optimize the two-photon absorption in broadband molecular systems. PbMoO(4) micro-octahedrons were prepared by the coprecipitation method at room temperature without the presence of surfactants and processed in a conventional hydrothermal at different temperatures (from 60 to 120 degrees C) for 10 min. These micro-octahedrons were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and micro-Raman (MR) spectroscopy, and its morphology was investigated by field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM). The optical properties were analyzed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and MR spectra confirmed that the PbMoO(4) micro-octahedrons are characterized by a scheelite-type tetragonal structure. FEG-SEM micrographs points, out that these structures present a polydisperse particle size distribution in consequence of a predominant growth mechanism via aggregation of particles. In addition, it was observed that the hydrothermal conditions favored a spontaneous formation of micro-octahedrons interconnected along a common crystallographic orientation (oriented-attachment), resulting in self-organized structures. An intense blue PL emission at room temperature was observed in these micro-octahedrons when they were excited with a 350 nm wavelength. The origin of the PL emissions as well as its intensity variations are explained by means of a model based on both distorted [MoO(4)] and [PbO(8)] clusters into the lattice.

Neodymium doped yttrium aluminoborate and yttrium calcium borate glasses were prepared by the conventional melting-quenching technique with neodymium concentration varying from 0.10 to 1.0 mol%. The obtained glasses present a wide transparency in the UV-visible region (till 240 nm). The thermoluminescent (TL) emission of beta-irradiated samples was measured, showing a broad peak at similar to 240 degrees C with intensities related to the Nd(3+) content, for both glasses. Calcium borate glass samples are about one order of magnitude less luminescent than the aluminoborate glasses. Probably the presence of Ca(2+), instead of Al(3+) and Y(3+) in the matrix, inhibits the production of the intrinsic hole centers. connected to boron and oxygen, known in the literature to act as luminescent centers in TL emission of borate glasses. We suggest that Nd(3+) ions act as electron trapping centers in both glass matrices, as they modify the temperature of emission and the light intensity. Also, the Nd:YAIB glass can be used as a dosimeter in various applications, including radiotherapy. but the sensitivity of this material to neutron should be checked. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Nanostructural beta-nickel hydroxide (beta-Ni(OH)(2)) plates were prepared using the microwave hydrothermal (MH) method at a low temperature and short reaction times. An ammonia solution was employed as the coordinating agent, which reacts with [Ni(H(2)O)(6)](2+) to control the growth of beta-Ni(OH)(2) nuclei. A trigonal beta-Ni(OH)(2) single phase was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, and the crystal cell was constructed with structural parameters and atomic coordinates obtained from Rietveld refinement. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images revealed that the samples consisted of hexagonal-shaped nanoplates with a different particle size distribution. Broad absorption bands assigned as transitions of Ni(2+) in oxygen octahedral sites were revealed by UV-vis spectra. Photoluminescence (PL) properties observed with a maximum peak centered in the blue-green region were attributed to different defects, which were produced during the nucleation process. We present a growth process scheme of the beta-Ni(OH)(2) nanoplates. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The adsorption kinetics curves of poly(xylylidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT), a poly-p-phenylenevinylene (PPV) precursor, and the sodium salt of dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBS), onto (PTHT/DBS)(n) layer-by-layer (LBL) films were characterized by means of UV-vis spectroscopy. The amount of PTHT/DBS and PTHT adsorbed on each layer was shown to be practically independent of adsorption time. A Langmuir-type metastable equilibrium model was used to adjust the adsorption isotherms data and to estimate adsorption/desorption coefficients ratios, k = k(ads)/k(des), values of 2 x 10(5) and 4 x 10(6) for PTHT and PTHT/DBS layers, respectively. The desorption coefficient has been estimated, using literature values for poly(o-methoxyaniline) desorption coefficient, as was found to be in the range of 10(-9) to 10(-6) s(-1), indicating that quasi equilibrium is rapidly attained.

The Z-scan technique is employed to obtain the nonlinear refractive index (n (2)) of the Ca(4)REO(BO(3))(3) (RECOB, where RE = Gd and La) single crystals using 30 fs laser pulses centered at 780 nm for the two orthogonal orientations determined by the optical axes (X and Z) relative to the direction of propagation of the laser beam (k//Y// crystallographic b-axis). The large values of n (2) indicate that both GdCOB and LaCOB are potential hosts for Yb:RECOB lasers operating in the Kerr-lens mode locking (KLM) regime.

We have revisited photoassociative ionization (PAI) in a cold sample of Na atmos. A two-color experiment was performed ina magneto-optical trap through the addition of aprobe laser. The observation of a marked change in the PAI rate for a definite frequency range can be attributed to the influence of repuisive levels and a possible avoided crossing between long-range molecular levels. Periodic first-principles calculations based on density functional theory at the B3LYP level has been carried out to investigate the photoluminescence (PL) emission of BaZrO(3) assembled nanoparticles at room temperature. The defect created in the nanocrystals and their resultant electronic features lead to a diversification of electronic recombination within the BaZrO(3) band gap. Its optical phenomena are discussed in the light of photoluminescence emission at the green-yellow region around 570 nm. The theoretical model for displaced atoms and/or angular changes leads to the breaking of the local symmetry, which is based on the refined structure provided by Rietveld methodology. For each situation a band structure, charge mapping, and density of states were built and analyzed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, UV-vis measurements, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images are essential for a full evaluation of the crystal structure and morphology.
