The civil-military dictatorship, which took power in 1964, influenced the daily activities of schools and teachers. Many transformations occurred during this period, including the new legislation enacted under Law 5692/71 and changes which occurred due to the vigilance which teachers felt when working. The memories analyzed here of teachers from public schools in Sao Paulo show different perceptions of this surveillance, involving various forms of acceptance or resistance. The purpose of this article is to show that although there was no direct repression of schools, unlike in the universities, teachers at the elementary school also felt constrained and this can be seen in their educational practices and teaching concepts.

Neospora caninum is an apicomplexan parasite responsible for major economic losses due to abortions in cattle. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) sense specific microbial products and direct downstream signaling pathways in immune cells, linking innate, and adaptive immunity. Here, we analyze the role of TLR2 on innate and adaptive immune responses during N. caninum infection. Inflammatory peritoneal macrophages and bone marrow-derived dendritic cells exposed to N. caninum-soluble antigens presented an upregulated expression of TLR2. Increased receptor expression was correlated to TLR2/MyD88-dependent antigen-presenting cell maturation and pro-inflammatory cytokine production after stimulation by antigens. Impaired innate responses observed after infection of mice genetically deficient for TLR2((-/-)) was followed by downregulation of adaptive T helper 1 (Th1) immunity, represented by diminished parasite-specific CD4(+) and CD8(+) T-cell proliferation, IFN-gamma:interleukin (IL)-10 ratio, and IgG subclass synthesis. In parallel, TLR2(-/-) mice presented higher parasite burden than wild-type (WT) mice at acute and chronic stages of infection. These results show that initial recognition of N. caninum by TLR2 participates in the generation of effector immune responses against N. caninum and imply that the receptor may be a target for future prophylactic strategies against neosporosis. Quercetin has antioxidants properties which may increase nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. However, the effects of quercetin on NO status have been poorly studied. We evaluated whether quercetin improves the plasma levels of NO metabolites in two-kidney one-clip (2K1C) hypertensive rats and assessed its effect on endothelial function. Sham-operated and 2K1C rats were treated with quercetin (10 mg(-1) kg(-1) day(-1) by gavage) or vehicle for 3 weeks. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was monitored weekly. Vascular responses to acetylcholine (Ach) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) were assessed in hindquarter vascular bed. Plasma nitrate levels were assessed by Griess reagent and plasma nitrite and nitroso species (S, N-nitroso species) were assessed by ozone- based chemiluminescence. Aortic NADPH oxidase activity and superoxide production were evaluated. While quercetin had no effects in control normotensive rats (P > 0.05), it significantly reduced SBP in 2K1C rats (P < 0.05). At the end of treatment, plasma nitrate levels were similar in all experimental groups (P > 0.05). However, plasma nitrite and the nitroso species levels were significantly lower in 2K1C rats when compared with controls (P < 0.05). Quercetin treatment restored plasma nitrite and nitroso species levels to those found in the sham-vehicle group (P < 0.05). While quercetin treatment induced no significant changes in responses to SNP (P > 0.05), it restored the vascular responses to Ach. Quercetin significantly attenuated 2K1C-hypertension-induced increases in NADPH oxidase activity and vascular superoxide production (P < 0.05). These results suggest that the antihypertensive effects of quercetin were associated with increased NO formation and improved endothelial function, which probably result from its antioxidant effects.

The South American lungfish (Lepidosiren paradoxa) has an arterial P(O2), (Pa(O2)) as high as 70-100 mm Hg, corresponding to Hb-O(2) saturations from 90% to 95%, which indicates a moderate cardiovascular right to left (R-L) shunt. In hyperoxia (50% O(2)), we studied animals in: (1) aerated water combined with aerial hyperoxia, which increased Pa(O2) from 78 +/- 2 to 114 +/- 3 mm Hg and (2) and aquatic hyperoxia (50% O(2)) combined room air, which gradually increased Pa(O2) from 75 +/- 4 mm Hg to as much as 146 +/- 10 mm Hg. Further, the hyperoxia (50%) depressed pulmonary ventilation from 58 +/- 13 to 5.5 +/- 3.0 mLBTPS kg h(-1), and Pa(CO2) increased from 20 +/- 2 to 31 +/- 4 mm Hg, while pHa became reduced from 7.56 +/- 0.03 to 7.31 +/- 0.09. At the same time, venous P(O2) (Pv(O2)) rose from 40.0 +/- 2.3 to 46.4 +/- 1.2 mm Hg and, concomitantly, Pvco, increased from 23.2 +/- 1.1 to 32.2 +/- 0.5 mm Hg. R-L shunts were estimated to about 19%, which is moderate when compared to most amphibians. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The role of innate immune responses in protection against leptospirosis remains unclear. We examined the expression of the chemokines CCL2/JE (MCP-1), CCL3/MIP-1 alpha (MIP-1 alpha) and CXCL1/KC (IL-8) regarding resistance and susceptibility to leptospirosis in experimental mice models BALB/c and C3H/HeJ, respectively. A virulent strain of Leptospira interrogans serovar Copenhageni was used in this study. Twenty-five animals of each mouse strain of C3H/HeJ and BALB/c, were infected intraperitoneally with 106 cells. Five un-infected animals of each strain were kept as control. Mortality of C3H/HeJ mouse was observed while BALB/c mice were asymptomatic. The presence of leptospire DNA in tissues of infected animals was demonstrated by PCR. Chemokines were measured in serum, spleen, liver, kidney and lung of both strains of animals using immunoenzymatic assay (ELISA). Elevations in the levels of chemokines MCP-1 and IL-8 occurred in all organs and sera of C3H/HeJ and BALB/c infected mice. The levels of MIP-1 alpha were lower when compared to MCP-1 and IL-8 in all analyzed organs, with a slight increase in liver and kidney. Our results indicate that the expression of inflammatory mediators can vary greatly, depending on the tissue and mouse strains. It is possible that the resistance to Leptospira can be partially correlated to the increase of MIP-1 alpha observed in BALB/c mice, while an increasing and a sustained expression of MCP-1 and IL-8 in the lungs of C3H/HeJ mice can be correlated to the severity and progression of leptospirosis. The present work studied the adverse effects of maternal exposure of rats to alcohol during lactation, on the development of their offspring. Histometric evaluation by karyometry and of the alveolar bone at the level of the first upper molar of the sucking was perfomed. Two groups of animals, one coming from mothers exposed to drinking water containing 20% ethanol during the total lactation period and the other of controls coming from mothers receiving only alcohol-free drinking water during this period. On the 21 first day of lactation the young of each group were aleatorily selected and following anesthesia, their heads severed; after histological treatment, serial 6 mu m sections on the frontal plane at the molar level, stained with hematoxilin and eosin, were obtained. The experimental results produced, suggest that sucking from ethanol-treated mothers, show retarded post-natal growth, their alveolar bones presenting scarce, little calcified trabeculae, and a more abundant bone marrow compared to controls.

There is evidence that fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are involved in the regulation of growth and regression of the corpus luteum (CL). However, the expression pattern of most FGF receptors (FGFRs) during CL lifespan is still unknown. The objective of the present study was to determine the pattern of expression of `B` and `C` splice variants of FGFRs in the bovine CL. Bovine CL were collected from an abattoir and classed as corpora hemorrhagica (Stage I), developing (Stage II), developed (Stage III) or regressed (Stage IV) CL. Expression of FGFR mRNA was measured by semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and FGFR protein was localised by immunohistochemistry. Expression of mRNA encoding the `B` and `C` spliced forms of FGFR1 and FGFR2 was readily detectable in the bovine CL and was accompanied by protein localisation. FGFR1C and FGFR2C mRNA expression did not vary throughout CL lifespan, whereas FGFR1B was upregulated in the developed (Stage III) CL. FGFR3B, FGFR3C and FGFR4 expression was inconsistent in the bovine CL. The present data indicate that FGFR1 and FGFR2 splice variants are the main receptors for FGF action in the bovine CL.

The behavioral effects of the K-opioid receptor agonist U69593 were examined in lactating rats. On day 5 of lactation, animals were treated with 0.1 mg/kg of U69593 to determine whether it influences general activity and maternal latencies toward pups. Because little attention has been given to the possibility that pre-mating treatment with morphine may modulate the response to K-opioid receptor stimulation, another group of animals was submitted to the same acute challenge after abrupt withdrawal from repeated treatment with morphine sulfate during the pre-mating period (5 mg/kg on alternate days for a total of five doses). Acute F;opioid stimulation reduced total locomotion, rearing frequency, and time spent self-grooming and increased immobility duration. These K agonist effects were not observed in animals pretreated with morphine. Similarly, latencies to retrieve pups were longer only in animals pretreated with saline and challenged acutely with U69593. None of these effects were observed in morphine sulfate-pretreated animals. The present results suggest that pre-mating repeated exposure to morphine produces a tolerance-like effect on behavioral responses to low-dose K-opioid receptor stimulation in active reproductive females.
