The pathophysiology of hepatic osteodystrophy (HO) remains poorly understood. Our aim was to evaluate bone histomorphometry, biomechanical properties, and the role of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) system in the onset of this disorder. Forty-six male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: sham-operated (SO, n = 23) and bile duct-ligated (BDL, n = 23). Rats were killed on day 30 postoperatively. Immunohistochemical expression of IGF-I and GH receptor was determined in liver tissue and in the proximal growth plate cartilage of the left tibia. Histomorphometric analysis was performed in the right tibia, and the right femur was used for biomechanical analysis. The maximal force at fracture and the stiffness of the mid-shaft femur were, respectively, 53% and 24% lower in BDL compared to SO. Histomorphometric measurements showed low cancellous bone volume and decreased cancellous bone connectivity in BDL, compatible with osteoporosis. This group also showed increased mineralization lag time, indicating disturbance in bone mineralization. Serum levels of IGF-I were lower in BDL (basal 1,816 +/- A 336 vs. 30 days 1,062 +/- A 191 ng/ml, P < 0.0001). BDL also showed higher IGF-I expression in the liver tissue but lower IGF-I and GH receptor expression in growth plate cartilage than SO. Osteoporosis is the most important feature of HO; BDL rats show striking signs of reduced bone volume and decreased bone strength, as early as after 1 month of cholestasis. The endocrine and autocrine-paracrine IGF-I systems are deeply affected by cholestasis. Further studies will be necessary to establish their role in the pathogenesis of HO.

The civil-military dictatorship, which took power in 1964, influenced the daily activities of schools and teachers. Many transformations occurred during this period, including the new legislation enacted under Law 5692/71 and changes which occurred due to the vigilance which teachers felt when working. The memories analyzed here of teachers from public schools in Sao Paulo show different perceptions of this surveillance, involving various forms of acceptance or resistance. The purpose of this article is to show that although there was no direct repression of schools, unlike in the universities, teachers at the elementary school also felt constrained and this can be seen in their educational practices and teaching concepts.

The tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) is a relatively new and innovative surgical treatment for the cranial cruciate ligament rupture in the canine species. The real intent of the procedure is to provide functional stability to the stifle joint by eliminating or neutralizing the cranial tibial thrust during weight bearing instead to restore the cranial cruciate ligament function. The proposal of this study is to report a review of the TPLO procedure, emphasizing procedure, surgical technique, post operative care and complications. The TPLO procedure consists in a radial osteotomy in the tibial plato and rotation of the caudal plateau in order to obtain a desired angle, After the leveling of the tibial plateau, a bone plate and screws are used to stabilize the osteotomy until bone is healed up. The complications that have been associated with the procedure include tibial tuberosity fracture and patellar tendon tendinosis. This procedure has become increasingly more popular for surgical treatment of cranial cruciate ligament injuries in large breed dog. The long term clinical results have not been completely elucidated yet. It has been showed that this technique doesn`t halt the degenerative joint disease.

In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), either on human or animal studies, the main requirements for radiofrequency (RF) coils are to produce a homogeneous RF field while used as a transmitter coil and to have the best signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) while used as a receiver. Besides, they need to be easily frequency adjustable and have input impedance matching 50 Omega to several different load conditions. New theoretical and practical concepts are presented here for considerable enhancing of RF coil homogeneity for MRI experiments on small animals. To optimize field homogeneity, we have performed simulations using Blot and Savart law varying the coil`s window angle, achieving the optimum one. However, when the coil`s dimensions are the same order of the wave length and according to transmission line theory, differences in electrical length and effects of mutual inductances between adjacent strip conductors decrease both field homogeneity and SNR. The problematic interactions between strip conductors by means of mutual inductance were eliminated by inserting crossings at half electrical length, avoiding distortion on current density, thus eliminating sources of field inhomogeneity. Experimental results show that measured field maps and simulations are in good agreement. The new coil design, dubbed double-crossed saddle described here have field homogeneity and SNR superior than the linearly driven 8-rung birdcage coil. One of our major findings was that the effects of mutual inductance are more significant than differences in electrical length for this frequency and coil dimensions. In vitro images of a primate Cebus paela brain were acquired, confirming double-crossed saddle superiority. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
