In this study, the molecular structure and conformational analyses of the 4-isopropylthioxanthone (4-ITX) are reported according to experimental and theoretical results. The compound crystallizes in the centrosymmetric P (1) over bar space group with only one molecule in the asymmetric unit, presenting the most stable conformation, in which the three fused-rings adopt a planar geometry, and the isopropyl group assumes a torsional angle with less sterical hindrance. The structural and conformational analyses were performed using theoretical calculations such as Hartree-Fock (HF), DFT method in combination with 6-311G(d,p) and 6-31++G(d,p) and the results were compared with infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The supramolecular assembly of 4-ITX is kept by non-classical C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds and weak interactions such as pi-pi stacking. 4-ITX was also studied by (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic properties of the 4-ITX showed the long-wavelength maximum shifts towards high energy when the solvent polarity increases. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Middle to Late Holocene barriers are conspicuous landforms in southeastern and southern Brazilian regions. The barriers in the coastal zones of northern Santa Catarina, Parana and Sao Paulo states (27 degrees 19`-24 degrees 00`S) are formed mainly by beach ridge alignments and many barriers present foredune and blowout alignments in their seaward portion. The development of these eolian landforms appears to record a regional shift in coastal dynamics and barrier building. In this context, the Ilha Comprida barrier stands out for its well-developed and well-preserved foredunes and blowouts. Based on the presence or not and type of eolian landforms, the Ilha Comprida barrier can be divided seaward into inner, middle and outer units. The inner unit is formed entirely by beach ridges. The middle unit comprises a narrow belt of blowouts (up to 15 m high) aligned alongshore. Blowout lobes pointing NNW are indicative of their generation by southern winds. The outer unit is represented by low (<= 1 m high) active or stabilized foredunes and a small transgressive dunefield (similar to 1 km(2)). Twenty-seven luminescence ages (SAR protocol) obtained for the beach ridges, foredunes, and blowouts of these three units allow definition of a precise chronology of these landforms and calculation of rates of coastal progradation. The inner unit presents ages greater than 1004 +/- 88 years. The blowouts of the middle unit show ages from 575 +/- 47 to 172 +/- 18 years. The ages of the outer unit are less than 108 +/- 10 years. Rates of coastal progradation for the inner and outer units are 0.71-0.82 m/year and 0.86-2.23 m/year, respectively. The main phase of blowout development correlates well with the Little Ice Age (LIA) climatic event. These results indicate that southern winds in subtropical Brazil became increasingly more intense and/or frequent during the LIA. These conditions persist to the present and are responsible for the development of the eolian landforms in the outer unit. Thus, barrier geomorphology can record global climatic events. The sensitivity of barrier systems in subtropical Brazil to Late Holocene climate changes was favored by the relative sea level stillstand during this time. Luminescence dating makes it possible to analyze barrier geomorphology during Late Holocene climate changes operating on timescales of a hundred to thousand years. These results improve our knowledge of barrier building and will help in the evaluation of the impact of future climate changes on coastal settings. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work describes the development and optimization of a sequential injection method to automate the determination of paraquat by square-wave voltammetry employing a hanging mercury drop electrode. Automation by sequential injection enhanced the sampling throughput, improving the sensitivity and precision of the measurements as a consequence of the highly reproducible and efficient conditions of mass transport of the analyte toward the electrode surface. For instance, 212 analyses can be made per hour if the sample/standard solution is prepared off-line and the sequential injection system is used just to inject the solution towards the flow cell. In-line sample conditioning reduces the sampling frequency to 44 h(-1). Experiments were performed in 0.10 M NaCl, which was the carrier solution, using a frequency of 200 Hz, a pulse height of 25 mV, a potential step of 2 mV, and a flow rate of 100 mu L s(-1). For a concentration range between 0.010 and 0.25 mg L(-1), the current (i(p), mu A) read at the potential corresponding to the peak maximum fitted the following linear equation with the paraquat concentration (mg L(-1)): ip = (-20.5 +/- 0.3) Cparaquat -(0.02 +/- 0.03). The limits of detection and quantification were 2.0 and 7.0 mu g L(-1), respectively. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by recovery studies using spiked water samples that were also analyzed by molecular absorption spectrophotometry after reduction of paraquat with sodium dithionite in an alkaline medium. No evidence of statistically significant differences between the two methods was observed at the 95% confidence level.

The inclusion of the history of science in science curricula-and specially, in the curricula of science teachers-is a trend that has been followed in several countries. The reasons advanced for the study of the history of science are manifold. This paper presents a case study in the history of chemistry, on the early developments of John Dalton`s atomic theory. Based on the case study, several questions that are worth discussing in educational contexts are pointed out. It is argued that the kind of history of science that was made in the first decades of the twentieth century (encyclopaedic, continuist, essentially anachronistic) is not appropriate for the development of the competences that are expected from the students of sciences in the present. Science teaching for current days will benefit from the approach that may be termed the ""new historiography of science"".

The analysis of the IR carbonyl band of the N-methoxy-N-methyl-2-[(4`-substituted)phenyisulfonyI]propanamides Y-PhSO(2)CH(Me)C(O)N(OMe)Me (Y = OMe 1, Me 2, H 3, Cl 4, NO(2) 5), supported by HF/6-31G(d,p) calculations of 3,, indicated the existence of two gauche conformers (g(1) and g(2)), the g, conformer being the most stable and the least polar one (in gas phase and in solution). Both conformers are present in solution of the non polar solvent (CCl(4)) for 1-5 and in solution of the more polar solvents (CHCl(3)) for 1. 4, 5 and (CH(2)Cl(2)) for 5, while only the g(1) conformer is present in solution of the most polar solvent (CH(3)CN) for 1-5. The g, and g2 conformers correspond to the enantiomeric pairs of diastereomers (diast(1) and diast(2)) whose relative configurations are [C(3)(R)N(R)]/[C(3)(s)N(s)] and [C(3)(R)N(s)]/[C(3)(s)N(R)], respectively. The computed carbonyl frequencies for g(1) (diast(1)) and g(2) (diast(2)) stereoisomers of3 match well the experimental values. The NBO analysis, for 3 shows the important role of the orbital interactions in conformer stabilization and the overall balance of these interactions corroborates that the g, conformer is more stable than the 92 one. The observed abnormal solvent effect on the relative intensities of the carbonyl doublet components is attributed to the molecular crowding in the g2 conformer which hinders its solvation in comparison to the g, conformer (diast(1)). X-ray single crystal analysis performed for 3 shows the existence Of two 92, and g(1b) conformers of diastereomers (diast2, and diast(1b)) whose absolute configurations are [C(3)(R)N(s)] and [C(3)(R)N(R)], respectively. The larger population and. thus, the larger stabilization of the g(2), conformer over the gib form in the crystals may be associated with a larger energy gain deriving from dipole moment coupling in the former conformer along with a series of C-H center dot center dot center dot O electrostatic and hydrogen bond interactions, (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. We describe a simple and efficient strategy to fabricate enzymatic devices based on the deposition of glucose oxidase on aligned and highly oriented CoNiMo metallic nanowires. CoNiMo nanowires with an average diameter of 200 nm and length of 50 mu m were electrodeposited on Au-covered alumina substrates via electrodeposition, using alumina membranes as templates. Enzyme-modified electrodes were fabricated via enzyme immobilization using a cross-linker. To minimize nonspecific reactions in the presence of interfering agents, a permselective membrane composed of poly(vinylsulfonic acid) and polyamidoamine dendrimer was deposited via electrostatic interaction. The formation of hydrogen peroxide as a product of the enzymatic reaction was monitored at low overpotential, 0.0 V (vs Ag/AgCl). The detection limit was estimated at 22 mu M under an applied potential of 0.0 V. The apparent Michaelis-Menten constant determined from the Lineweaver-Burke plot was 2 mM.

The analysis of the IR carbonyl band of the N-methoxy-N-methyl-2-[(4`-substituted)phenylthio]propanamides Y-PhSCH(Me)C(O)N(OMe)Me (Y=OMe 1, Me 2, H 3, Cl 4, NO(2) 5), supported by B3LYP/cc-pVDZ calculations of 3, indicated the existence of two gauche conformers (g(1) and g(2)), the g(1) conformer being the more stable and the less polar one (in gas phase and in solution). Both conformers are present in solution of the polar solvents (CH(2)Cl(2) and CH(3)CN) for 1-5 and in solution of the less polar solvent (CHCl(3)) for 1-4, while only the g(1) conformer is present in solution of non polar solvents (n-C(6)H(14) and CCl(4)) and in solution of CHCl(3) for 5. NBO analysis shows that both the sigma(C-S) -> pi*(C=O) (hyperconjugative) and the pi(C=O) -> sigma*(C-S) orbital interactions contribute almost to the same extent for the stabilization of g(1) and g(2) conformers. The pi*(C=O) -> sigma*(C-S), n(S) -> pi*(C=O) and the n(S) -> pi*(C=O) orbital interactions stabilize more the g(1) conformer than the g(2) one. Moreover, the suitable geometry of the g(1) conformer leads to its stabilization through the LP(O2) -> sigma*(C8-H11) orbital interaction (hydrogen bond) along with the strong O([CO])(delta-) center dot center dot center dot H([O-Ph])(delta+) electrostatic interaction. On the other hand, the appropriate geometry of the g(2) conformer leads to its stabilization by the LP(O22) -> sigma*(C9-H13) orbital interaction (hydrogen bond) along with the weak O([OMe])(delta-) center dot center dot center dot H([o`-Ph])(delta+) electrostatic static interaction. As for the 4`-nitro derivative 5 the ortho-phenyl hydrogen atom becomes more acidic, leading to a stronger O([CO])(delta-) center dot center dot center dot H([o-Ph])(delta+) interaction and, thus, into a larger stabilization of the g(1) conformer in the whole series. This trend is responsible for the unique IR carbonyl band in CHCl(3) solution of 5. The larger occupancy of the pi*(C=O) orbital of the g(1) conformer relative to that of the g(2) conformer, along with the O([CO])(delta-) center dot center dot center dot H([o-Ph])(delta+) electrostatic interaction (hydrogen bond) justifies the lower carbonyl frequency of the g(1) conformer with respect to the g(2) one, in gas phase and in solution. This paper describes the development of a sequential injection chromatography (SIC) procedure for separation and quantification of the herbicides simazine, atrazine, and propazine exploring the low backpressure of a 2.5 cm long monolithic C(18) column. The separation of the three compounds was achieved in less than 90 s with resolution > 1.5 using a mobile phase composed by ACN/1.25 mmol/L acetate buffer (pH 4.5) at the volumetric ratio of 35:65 and flow rate of 40 mu L/s. Detection was made at 223 nm using a flow cell with 40 mm of optical path length. The LOD was 10 mu g/L for the three triazines and the quantification limits were of 30 mu g/L for simazine and propazine and 40 mu g/L for atrazine. The sampling frequency is 27 samples per hour, consuming 1.1 mL of ACN per analysis. The proposed methodology was applied to spiked water samples and no statistically significant differences were observed in comparison to a conventional HPLC-UV method. The major metabolites of atrazine and other herbicides did not interfere in the analysis, being eluted from the column either together with the unretained peak, or at retention times well-resolved from the studied compounds.

We have investigated the polyoxides HOOH, HOOOH, HOOOOH, and HOOO employing the CCSD(T) methodology, and the correlation consistent basis sets. For all molecules, we have computed fundamental vibrational frequencies, structural parameters, rotational constants, and rotation-vibration corrections. For HOOOH, we have obtained a good agreement between our results and microwave and infrared spectra measurements, although for the symmetric OO stretch some important differences were found. Heats of formation were computed using atomization energies, and our recommendation is as follows: Delta H degrees(f,298)(HOOOH) = -21.50 kcal/mol and Delta H degrees(f,298)(HOOOOH) = -10.61 kcal/mol. In the case of HOOO, to estimate the heat of formation, we have constructed three isodesmic reactions to cancel high order correlation effects. The results obtained confirmed that the latter effects are very important for HOOO. The new Delta H degrees(f,298)(HOOO) obtained is 5.5 kcal/mol. We have also calculated the zero-point energies of DO and DOOO to correct the experimental lower limit determined for the Delta H degrees(f,298)(HOOO). The Delta(Delta ZPE) decreases the binding energy of HOOO by 0.56 kcal/mol. Employing the latter value, the new experimental lower limit for Delta H degrees(f,298)(HOOO) is 3.07 kcal/mol, just 2.4 kcal/mol lower than our determination. We expect that the fundamental vibrational frequencies and rotational constants determined for HOOOOH and DOOOOD contribute to its identification in the gas phase. The vibrational spectrum of HOOOOH shows some overlapping with that of HOOOH thus indicating that one may encounter some difficulties in its characterization. We discuss the consequences of the thermochemical properties determined in this work, and suggest that the amount of HOOO present in the atmosphere is smaller than that proposed recently in this journal (J. Phys. Chem A 2007, 111, 4727).

The analysis of the IR carbonyl band of the alpha-methylsulfonyl-alpha-diethoxyphosphoryl p-substituted acetophenones p-Y-Ph-C(O)CH(SO(2)Me)[P(O)(OEt)(2)] (Y = OMe 1, H 2, F 3, Cl 4, Br 5 and NO(2) 6) supported by HF/6-31G(d,p) ab initio calculations of the alpha-methylsulfonyl-alpha-diethoxyphosphoryl acetophenone 2, indicated the existence of a single stable cl conformer in gas phase and in solvents of increasing polarity, along with the presence of second less stable conformation in gas phase. Multiconfigurational SCF and second-order perturbation theory have been employed to study seven low-lying singlet and triplet electronic states of the Mo-2 molecule. The bond order of the ground state has been analyzed based on the effective bond order (EBO), indicating that a fully developed sextuple bond is formed between the two Mo atoms. The experimentally observed excited states a(3)Sigma(+)(u) and A(1)Sigma(+)(u) have been determined and the so-called (3)Lambda excited state identified as the b(3)Sigma(+)(u) state, in agreement with experimental expectations. The analysis of the IR carbonyl band of the N,N-diethyl-2-[(4`-substituted)phenylsulfonyl]acetamides Et(2)NC(O)CH(2)S(O)(2)-C(6)H(4)-Y (Y = OMe 1, Me 2,1-13, Cl 4, Br 5, NO(2) 6) supported by B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) calculations for 3, indicated the existence of three pairs (anti and syn) of cis (c) and gauche (g(1) and g(2)) conformers in the gas phase, being the gauche conformers significantly more stable than the cis ones. The anti geometry is more stable than the syn one, for each pair of cis and gauche conformers. The summing up of the orbital (NBO analysis) and electrostatic interactions justifies quite well the populations and the v(CO) frequencies of the anti and syn pairs of c, g(1) and g(2) conformers. The IR higher carbonyl frequency component whose population is ca. 10%, in CCl(4), may be ascribed to the least stable and most polar cis conformer pair (in the gas phase) and the lower frequency component whose population is ca. 90%, to the summing up of the populations of the two most stable and least polar gauche conformer pairs (g(1) and g(2)) (in the gas phase). The reversal of the cis(c)/gauche (g(1) + g(2)) population ratio observed in chloroform ca. 60% (cis)/40% (gauche) and the occurrence of the most polar cis(c) conformer only, in acetonitrile, strongly suggests the coalescence of the two gauche components in a unique carbonyl band in solution. A further support to this rationalization is given by the single point PCM solvation model performed by HF/6-31G(d,p) method, which showed a progressive increase of the c/(g(1) + g(2)) ratio going from gas to CCl(4), to CHCl(3) and to CH(3)CN. X-ray single crystal analysis of 4 indicates that this compound assumes, in the solid state, the syn-clinal (gauche) conformation with respect to the [O=C-CH(2)-S] moiety, and the most stable anti geometry relative to the [C(O)N(CH(2)CH(3))(2)] fragment. In order to obtain larger energy gain from the crystal packing the molecules of 4 are linked in centrosymmetric dimers through two C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions (C-H([O-Ph])center dot center dot center dot O([SO2])) forming a step ladder. This paper describes the optimization and use of a Sequential Injection Analysis (SIA) procedure for ammonium determination in waters. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used as a tool for optimization of a procedure based on the modified Berthelot reaction. The SIA system was designed to (i) prepare the reaction media by injecting an air-segmented zone containing the reagents in a mixing chamber, (ii) to aspirate the mixture back to the holding coil after homogenization, (iii) drive it to a thermostated reaction coil, where the flow is stopped for a previously established time, and (iv) to pump the mixture toward the detector flow cell for the spectrophotometric measurements. Using a 100 mu mol L(-1) ammonium solution, the following factors were considered for optimization: reaction temperature (25 - 45 degrees C), reaction time (30 - 90 s), hypochlorite concentration (20 - 40 mmol L(-1)) nitroprusside concentration (10 - 40 mmol L(-1)) and salicylate concentration (0.1 - 0.3 mol L(-1)). The proposed system fed the statistical program with absorbance data for fast construction of response surface plots. After optimization of the method, figures of merit were evaluated, as well as the ammonium concentration in some water samples. No evidence of statistical difference was observed in the results obtained by the proposed method in comparison to those obtained by a reference method based on the phenol reaction. The analysis of the IR nu(co) bands of the 2-ethylsulfinyl-(4`-substituted)-phenylthioacetates 4`-Y-C(6)H(4)SC(O)CH(2)S(O)Et (Y = NO(2) 1, Cl 2, Br 3, H 4, Me 5, OMe 6) supported by B3LY/6-31G(d,p) calculations along with the NBO analysis for 1.4 and 6 and X-ray analysis for 3, indicated the existence of four gauche (q-g-syn, g(3)-syn. g(1)-atin and q-g(2)-syn) conformers for 1-6 The calculations reproduce quite well the experimental results, i e the computed q-g-syn and g3-syn conformers correspond in the IR spectrum (in solution), to the nu(co) doublet higher frequency component of larger intensity, while the computed grant, conformer correspond to the nu(co) doublet lower frequency component (in solution) NBO analysis showed that the n(s) -> pi(center dot)(c1=o2), no(co) -> sigma(c1-s3), no(co) -> sigma(c1-c4) orbital interactions are the main factors which stabilize the q-g-syn, g(3)-syn, g(1)-anti and q-g(2)-syn conformers for 1, 4 and 6 The no(co) -> sigma(c1-s3) interaction which stabilizes the q-g-syn, g(3)-syn and q-g(2)-syn conformers into a larger extent than the granti conformer, is responsible for the larger tto frequencies of the former conformers relative to the latter one. The q-g-syn, g(3)-syn and q-g(2)-syn conformers are further stabilized sigma(c4-s5) -> pi(co)center dot (strong). pi(co)/sigma(c1-c4,) no(co) -> sigma(c6-H17[Et]) (weak) and pi(co)/sigma(c4-c5) pi(co) (strong) orbital interactions. The q-g-syn conformei is further stabilized by the n(S5) O((C))(8-) S((SO))(8+) attractive Coulornbic interaction while the q-g(2)-syn conformer is destabilized by the n55 0,8c-0) repulsive Coulombic interaction. This analysis indicates the following conformer stabilization order. q-g-syn, g(3)-syn > g(1)-anti >> q-g(2)-syn X-ray single crystal analysis of 3 indicates that it assumes in the solid a distorted q-g(2)-syn geometry which is stabilized through almost the same orbital and Coulombic interaction which takes place for the q-g(2)-syn conformer, in the gas, along with dipole moment coupling and a series intermolecular C-HO0 interactions. The aim of this study was to develop a fast capillary electrophoresis method for the determination of inorganic cations (Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+)) in biodiesel samples, using barium (Ba(2+)) as the internal standard. The running electrolyte was optimized through effective mobility curves in order to select the co-ion and Peakmaster software was used to determine electromigration dispersion and buffer capacity. The optimum background electrolyte was composed of 10 mmol L(-1) imidazole and 40 mmol L(-1) of acetic acid. Separation was conducted in a fused-silica capillary (32 cm total length and 23.5 cm effective length, 50 mu m I.D.), with indirect UV detection at 214 nm. The migration time was only 36 s. In order to obtain the optimized conditions for extraction, a fractional factorial experimental design was used. The variables investigated were biodiesel mass, pH, extractant volume, agitation and sonication time. The optimum conditions were: biodiesel mass of 200 mg, extractant volume of 200 mu L. and agitation of 20 min. The method is characterized by good linearity in the concentration range of 0.5-20 mg kg(-1) (r > 0.999), limit of detection was equal to 0.3 mg kg(-1), inter-day precision was equal to 1.88% and recovery in the range of 88.0-120%. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of cations in biodiesel samples. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
