Experimental results for the activity of water in aqueous solutions of 10 single polyelectrolytes (two polysodium acrylates, two polysodium methacrylates, three polyammonium acrylates, two polysodium ethylene sulfonates, and one polysodium styrene sulfonate) at (298.2 and 323.2) K are reported. The isopiestic method was employed in these experiments with aqueous solutions of sodium chloride as references. The polyelectrolytes were characterized by three averaged molecular masses determined by gel permeation chromatography. Furthermore, the density and the refractive index increments of the aqueous polyelectrolyte solutions are reported. Although a similar pattern for the activity of water was observed for all systems (i.e., the osmotic coefficient increases with rising polyelectrolyte concentration), the experimental results show that this property depends on the monomer type as well as on the size of the polymer chain. The temperature (varied from (298.2 to 323.2) K) has only a small influence on the activity of water.

SKAN: Skin Scanner - System for Skin Cancer Detection Using Adaptive Techniques - combines computer engineering concepts with areas like dermatology and oncology. Its objective is to discern images of skin cancer, specifically melanoma, from others that show only common spots or other types of skin diseases, using image recognition. This work makes use of the ABCDE visual rule, which is often used by dermatologists for melanoma identification, to define which characteristics are analyzed by the software. It then applies various algorithms and techniques, including an ellipse-fitting algorithm, to extract and measure these characteristics and decide whether the spot is a melanoma or not. The achieved results are presented with special focus on the adaptive decision-making and its effect on the diagnosis. Finally, other applications of the software and its algorithms are presented.

The purpose of this paper is to study metal separation from a sample composed of a mixture of the main types of spent household batteries, using a hydrometallurgical route, comparing selective precipitation and liquid-liquid extraction separation techniques. The preparation of the solution consisted of: grinding the waste of mixed batteries, reduction and volatile metals elimination using electric furnace and acid leaching. From this solution two different routes were studied: selective precipitation with sodium hydroxide and liquid-liquid extraction using Cyanex 272 [bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphoric acid] as extracting agent. The best results were obtained from liquid-liquid extraction in which Zn had a 99% extraction rate at pH 2.5. More than 95% Fe was extracted at pH 7.0, the same pH at which more than 90% Ce was extracted. About 88% Mn, Cr and Co was extracted at this pH. At pH 3.0, more than 85% Ni was extracted, and at pH 3.5 more than 80% of Cd and La was extracted. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Inorganic elements analyses of Carapicuiba lake reveal that As, Cr, Pb and Mn are above the recommended drinking water standards. The mean total concentrations of toxic elements in surface water decrease in the order Mn > Cr > Pb > As. At elevated concentrations, toxic elements like Cr can accumulate in soils and enter the food chain, leading to serious health hazards and threatening the long-term sustainability of the local ecosystem. Absorbing materials has often been used to improve water quality. In this investigation three types of material were studied: the natural zeolite (mordenite); synthetic goethite and the powdered block carbon modified. The adsorption of Pb(2+) and Mn(2+) onto natural zeolite as a function of their concentrations was studied at 24 degrees C by varying the metal concentration from 100 to 400 mg L(-1) while keeping all other parameters constant. The low-cost zeolites removed Pb from water without any pretreatment at pH values <6. The maximum adsorption attained was as follows: Pb(2+) 78.7% and Mn(2+) 19.6%. The modified powdered block carbon effectively removed As(V) and Cr(VI) while goethite removed more chromate than arsenate in the pH range 5-6. Results of this study will be used to evaluate the application these materials for the treatment of the Carapicuiba lake`s water.

Torrefaction is a mild pyrolysis process (usually up to 300 degrees C) that changes the chemical and physical properties of biomass. This process is a possible pre-treatment prior to further processes (transport, grinding, combustion, gasification, etc) to generate energy or biofuels. In this study, three eucalyptus wood species and bark were subjected to different torrefaction conditions to determine the alterations in their structural and energy properties. The most severe treatment (280 degrees C, 5 h) causes mass losses of more than 35%, with severe damage to anatomical structure, and an increase of about 27% in the specific energy content. Bark is more sensitive to heat than wood. Energy yields are always higher than mass yields, thereby demonstrating the benefits of torrefaction in concentrating biomass energy. The overall mass loss is proposed as a relevant parameter to synthesize the effect of torrefaction conditions (temperature and duration). Accordingly, all results are summarised by analytical expressions able to predict the energy properties as a function of the overall mass loss. These expressions are intended to be used in any optimization procedure, from production in the field to the final use. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The etiological agent of maize white spot (MWS) disease has been a subject of controversy and discussion. Initially the disease was described as Phaeosphaeria leaf spot caused by Phaeosphaeria maydis. Other authors have Suggested the existence of different fungal species causing similar symptoms. Recently, a bacterium, Pantoea ananatis, was described as the causal agent of this disease. The purpose of this Study was to offer additional information on the correct etiology of this disease by providing visual evidence of the presence of the bacterium in the interior of the MWS lesions by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and molecular techniques. The TEM allowed Visualization of a large amount of bacteria in the intercellular spaces of lesions collected from both artificially and naturally infected plants. Fungal structures were not visualized in young lesions. Bacterial primers for the 16S rRNA and rpoB genes were used in PCR reactions to amplify DNA extracted from water-soaked (young) and necrotic lesions. The universal fungal oligonucleotide ITS4 was also included to identity the possible presence of fungal structures inside lesions. Positive PCR products from water-soaked lesions, both from naturally and artificially inoculated plants, were produced with bacterial primers, whereas no amplification was observed when ITS4 oligonucleotide was used. On the other hand, DNA amplification with ITS4 primer was observed when DNA was isolated from necrotic (old) lesions. These results reinforced previous report of P. ananatis as the primary pathogen and the hypothesis that fungal species may colonize lesions pre-established by P. ananatis.

Soil CO(2) emissions are highly variable, both spatially and across time, with significant changes even during a one-day period. The objective of this study was to compare predictions of the diurnal soil CO(2) emissions in an agricultural field when estimated by ordinary kriging and sequential Gaussian simulation. The dataset consisted of 64 measurements taken in the morning and in the afternoon on bare soil in southern Brazil. The mean soil CO(2) emissions were significantly different between the morning (4.54 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) and afternoon (6.24 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) measurements. However, the spatial variability structures were similar, as the models were spherical and had close range values of 40.1 and 40.0 m for the morning and afternoon semivariograms. In both periods, the sequential Gaussian simulation maps were more efficient for the estimations of emission than ordinary kriging. We believe that sequential Gaussian simulation can improve estimations of soil CO(2) emissions in the field, as this property is usually highly non-Gaussian distributed.

A pool of five synthetic peptides was used as an antigenic base in an ELISA (ELISA-Pp) for laboratory diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni. Serum samples were obtained from individuals with acute (n = 23) and chronic (n = 30) schistosomiasis, with other parasitoses (n = 39) or without parasitic infections (n = 100). ELISA-Pp was compared with other immunoenzymatic methods for detection of IgM (IgM-ELISA) or IgG (IgG-ELISA) as well as an immunofluorescence test for detection of IgM antibodies (IgM-IFT). The sensitivity and specificity of ELISA-Pp was 86.8% and 94.2% when tested on the schistosomiasis group and the non-schistosomiasis group, respectively. Comparison of ELISA-Pp with other serological methods resulted in K concordance indices varying from 0.59 to 0.75. Evaluation of anti-peptide IgG antibodies showed higher Levels in patients with acute compared with chronic schistosomiasis (P = 0.001). ELISA-Pp showed satisfactory sensitivity and high specificity and may constitute a potentially useful method for laboratory diagnosis of schistosomiasis mansoni. This paper describes a new method for the preparation of 1,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-pentadien-3-one 1 and its derivatives 2-5. This set of synthetic compounds exhibited high antitumoral activities regarding in vitro screening against several human tumor cell lines as lung carcinoma NCI-460, melanoma UACC-62, breast MCF-7, colon HT-29, renal 786-O, ovarian OVCAR-03 and ovarian expressing the resistance phenotype for adriamycin NCI-ADR/ RES, prostate PC-3, and leukemia K-562. Compounds were also tested against murine tumor cell line B16F10 melanoma and lymphocytic leukemia L1210 as well as to their effect toward normal macrophages. Specific activity against colon cancer cells HT-29 was observed for all tested compounds and suggests further studies with models of colon cancer. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 showed significant cytotoxic activity with IC(50) values <= 2.3 mu M for all human cancer cell lines. Intraperitoneal acute administration of compound 1 and 2 showed very low toxicity rate. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present work investigates the mechanisms involved in the vasorelaxant effect of ent-16 alpha-methoxykauran-19-oic acid (KA-OCH(3)), a semi-synthetic derivative obtained from the kaurane-type diterpene ent-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid (kaurenoic acid). Vascular reactivity experiments were performed in aortic rings isolated from male Wistar rats using standard muscle bath procedures. The cytosolic calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)]c) was measured by confocal microscopy using the fluorescent probe Fluo-3 AM. Blood pressure measurements were performed in conscious rats. KA-OCH(3) (10,50 and 100 mu mol/l) inhibited phenylephrine-induced contraction in either endothelium-intact or endothelium-denuded rat aortic rings. KA-OCH(3) also reduced CaCl(2)-induced contraction in a Ca(2+)-free solution containing KCl (30 mmol/l) or phenylephrine (0.1 mu mol/l). KA-OCH(3) (0.1-300 mu mol/l) concentration-dependently relaxed endothelium-intact and endothelium-denuded aortas pre-contracted with either phenylephrine or KCl, to a greater extent than kaurenoic acid. Moreover, a Ca(2+) mobilisation study showed that KA-OCH(3) (100 mu mol/l) inhibited the increase in Ca(2+) concentration in smooth muscle and endothelial cells induced by phenylephrine or KCl. Pre-incubation of intact or denuded aortic rings with N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 100 mu mol/l), 7-nitroindazole (100 mu mol/l), wortmannin (0.5 mu mol/l) and 1H-[1,2,4]Oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ 1 mu mol/l) produced a rightward displacement of the KA-OCH(3) concentration-response curve. Intravenous administration of KA-OCH(3) (1-10 mg/kg) reduced mean arterial blood pressure in normotensive rats. Collectively, our results show that KA-OCH(3) induces vascular relaxation and hypotension. The mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular actions of KA-OCH(3) involve blockade of Ca(2+) influx and activation of the NO-cGMP pathway. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper reports the purification and biochemical/pharmacological characterization of two myotoxic phospholipases A(2) (PLA(2)S) from Bothrops brazili venom, a native snake from Brazil. Both myotoxins (MTX-I and II) were purified by a single chromatographic step on a CM-Sepharose ion-exchange column up to a high purity level, showing M-r similar to 14,000 for the monomer and 28,000 Da for the dimer. The N-terminal and internal peptide amino acid sequences showed similarity with other myotoxic PLA2S from snake venoms, MTX-I belonging to Asp49 PLA(2) class, enzymatically active, and MTX-II to Lys49 PLA(2)S, catalytically inactive. Treatment of MTX-I with BPB and EDTA reduced drastically its PLA(2) and anticoagulant activities, corroborating the importance of residue His48 and Ca2+ ions for the enzymatic catalysis. Both PLA(2)S induced myotoxic activity and dose-time dependent edema similar to other isolated snake venom toxins from Bothrops and Crotalus genus. The results also demonstrated that MTXs and cationic synthetic peptides derived from their 115-129 C-terminal region displayed cytotoxic activity on human T-cell leukemia (JURKAT) lines and microbicidal effects against Escherichia coli, Candida albicans and Leishmania sp. Thus, these PLA(2) proteins and C-terminal synthetic peptides present multifunctional properties that might be of interest in the development of therapeutic strategies against parasites, bacteria and cancer. The present work evaluates both in vitro and in vivo antitumor activity of BPB-modified BthTX-I and its cationic synthetic peptide derived from the 115-129 C-terminal region. BPB-BthTX-1 presented cytotoxicity of 10-40% on different tumor cell lines, which were also susceptible to the lytic action of the synthetic peptide. Injection of the modified protein or the peptide in mice, 5 days after transplantation of S 180 tumor cells, reduced 30 and 36% of the tumor size on day 14th and 76 and 79% on day 60th, respectively, when compared to the untreated control group. Thus, these antitumor properties might be of interest in the development of therapeutic strategies against cancer. (C) 2009 The International Association for Biologicals. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The electrochemical treatment of a synthetic tannery wastewater prepared with 30 compounds used in animal skin processing was studied. Electrolyses were performed in a one-compartment flow cell at a current density of 20 mA cm(-2), using a dimensionally stable anode (DSA (R)) of composition Ti/Ir(0.10)Sn(0.90)O(2) as the working electrode. Effects of chloride concentration and presence of sulfate were evaluated. Variation in the concentration of phenolic compounds as a function of electrolysis time revealed a first-order exponential decay; faster phenol removals were obtained with increasing chloride concentration in the wastewater. Lower phenol removals were obtained in the presence of sulfate. Higher chloride concentrations led to a faster decrease in total organic carbon (TOC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and absorbance values at 228 nm. Faster wastewater color removal, higher current efficiency and lower energy consumption were also obtained. This electrochemical treatment was also able to reduce the wastewater toxicity for Daphnia similis. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
