We present precise tests of CP and CPT symmetry based on the full data set of K -> pi pi decays collected by the KTeV experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory during 1996, 1997, and 1999. This data set contains 16 x 10(6) K -> pi(0)pi(0) and 69 x 10(6) K -> pi(+)pi(-) decays. We measure the direct CP violation parameter Re(epsilon'/epsilon) = (19.2 +/- 2.1) x 10(-4). We find the K(L) -> K(S) mass difference Delta m = (5270 +/- 12) x 10(6) (h) over tilde s(-1) and the K(S) lifetime tau(S) = (89.62 +/- 0.05) x 10(-12) s. We also measure several parameters that test CPT invariance. We find the difference between the phase of the indirect CP violation parameter epsilon and the superweak phase: phi(epsilon) - phi(SW) =(0.40 +/- 0.56)degrees. We measure the difference of the relative phases between the CP violating and CP conserving decay amplitudes for K -> pi(+)pi(-) (phi(+-)) and for K -> pi(0)pi(0) (phi(00)): Delta phi = (0.30 +/- 0.35)degrees. From these phase measurements, we place a limit on the mass difference between K(0) and (K) over bar (0): Delta M < 4.8 x 10(-19) GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L. These results are consistent with those of other experiments, our own earlier measurements, and CPT symmetry.

Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements of NiCl(2)-4SC(NH(2))(2) reveal the low-energy spin dispersion, including a magnetic-field interval in which the two-magnon continuum is within k(B)T of the ground state, allowing a continuum of excitations over a range of k states, rather than only the k=0 single-magnon excitations. This produces a novel Y shape in the frequency-field EPR spectrum measured at T >= 1.5 K. Since the interchain coupling J(perpendicular to)< k(B)T, this shape can be reproduced by a single S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with a strong easy-plane single-ion anisotropy. Importantly, the combination of experiment and modeling we report herein demonstrates a powerful approach to probing spin dispersion in a wide range of interacting magnetic systems without the stringent sample requirements and complications associated with inelastic scattering experiments.

During a polymorphism screening of hydroxybenzophenone derivatives, a monohydrate pseudopolymorph of (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)(phenyl)methanone, C(13)H(10)O(3)center dot H(2)O, (I), was obtained. Structural relationships and the role of water in crystal assembly were established on the basis of the known anhydrous form [Cox, Kechagias & Kelly (2008). Acta Cryst. B64, 206-216]. The crystal packing of (I) is stabilized by classical intermolecular O-H...O hydrogen bonds, generating a three-dimensional network.

The purpose of this paper is to explicitly describe in terms of generators and relations the universal central extension of the infinite dimensional Lie algebra, g circle times C[t, t(-1), u vertical bar u(2) = (t(2) - b(2))(t(2) - c(2))], appearing in the work of Date, Jimbo, Kashiwara and Miwa in their study of integrable systems arising from the Landau-Lifshitz differential equation.

We study induced modules of nonzero central charge with arbitrary multiplicities over affine Lie algebras. For a given pseudo parabolic subalgebra P of an affine Lie algebra G, our main result establishes the equivalence between a certain category of P-induced G-modules and the category of weight P-modules with injective action of the central element of G. In particular, the induction functor preserves irreducible modules. If P is a parabolic subalgebra with a finite-dimensional Levi factor then it defines a unique pseudo parabolic subalgebra P(ps), P subset of P(ps). The structure of P-induced modules in this case is fully determined by the structure of P(ps)-induced modules. These results generalize similar reductions in particular cases previously considered by V. Futorny, S. Konig, V. Mazorchuk [Forum Math. 13 (2001), 641-661], B. Cox [Pacific J. Math. 165 (1994), 269-294] and I. Dimitrov, V. Futorny, I. Penkov [Comm. Math. Phys. 250 (2004), 47-63].

This article analyzes the Brazilian political system from the local perspective. Following Cox (1997), we review the problems with electoral coordination that emerge from a given institutional framework. Due to the characteristics of the Brazilian Federal system and its electoral rules, linkage between the three levels of government is not guaranteed a priori, but demands a coordinating effort by the parties' leadership. According to our hypothesis, the parties are capable of coordinating their election strategies at different levels in the party system. Regression models based on two-stage least squares (2SLS) and TOBIT, analyzing a panel of Brazilian municipalities with data from the 1994 and 2000 elections, show that the proportion of votes received by a party in a given election correlates closely with its previous votes in majoritarian elections. Despite institutional incentives, the Brazilian party system shows evidence that it is organized nationally to the extent that it links the competition for votes at the three levels of government (National, State, and Municipal).

We present here the sequence of the mitochondrial genome of the basidiomycete phytopathogenic hemibiotrophic fungus Moniliophthora perniciosa, causal agent of the Witches` Broom Disease in Theobroma cacao. The DNA is a circular molecule of 109103 base pairs, with 31.9 % GC, and is the largest sequenced so far. This size is due essentially to the presence of numerous non-conserved hypothetical ORFs. It contains the 14 genes coding for proteins involved in the oxidative phosphorylation, the two rRNA genes, one ORF coding for a ribosomal protein (rps3), and a set of 26 tRNA genes that recognize codons for all amino acids. Seven homing endonucleases are located inside introns. Except atp8, all conserved known genes are in the same orientation. Phylogenetic analysis based on the cox genes agrees with the commonly accepted fungal taxonomy. An uncommon feature of this mitochondrial genome is the presence of a region that contains a set of four, relatively small, nested, inverted repeats enclosing two genes coding for polymerases with an invertron-type structure and three conserved hypothetical genes interpreted as the stable integration of a mitochondrial linear plasmid. The integration of this plasmid seems to be a recent evolutionary event that could have implications in fungal biology. This sequence is available under GenBank accession number AY376688. The present study investigated the role of ROS (reactive oxygen species) and COX (cyclooxygenase) in ethanol-induced contraction and elevation of [Ca(2+)](i) (intracellular [Ca(2+)]). Vascular reactivity experiments, using standard muscle bath procedures, showed that ethanol (1-800 mmol/l) induced contraction in endothelium-intact (EC(50): 306 +/- 34 mmol/l) and endothelium-denuded (EC(50): 180 +/- 40 mmol/l) rat aortic rings. Endothelial removal enhanced ethanol-induced contraction. Preincubation of intact rings with L-NAME [N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester; non-selective NOS (NO synthase) inhibitor, 100 mu mol/l], 7-nitroindazole [selective nNOS (neuronal NOS) inhibitor, 100 mu mol/l], oxyhaemoglobin (NO scavenger, 10 mu mol/l) and ODQ (selective inhibitor of guanylate cyclase enzyme, 1 mu mol/l) increased ethanol-induced contraction. Tiron [O(2)(-) (superoxide anion) scavenger, 1 mmol/l] and catalase (H(2)O(2) scavenger, 300 units/ml) reduced ethanol-induced contraction to a similar extent in both endothelium-intact and denuded rings. Similarly, indomethacin (non-selective COX inhibitor, 10 mu mol/l), SC560 (selective COX- I inhibitor, 1 mu mol/l), AH6809 [PGF(2 alpha) (prostaglandin F(2 alpha))] receptor antagonist, 10 mu mol/l] or SQ29584 [PGH(2)(prostaglandin H(2))/TXA(2) (thromboxane A(2)) receptor antagonist, 3 mu mol/l] inhibited ethanol-induced contraction in aortic rings with and without intact endothelium. In cultured aortic VSMCs (vascular smooth muscle cells), ethanol stimulated generation of O(2)(-) and H(2)O(2). Ethanol induced a transient increase in [Ca(2+)](i), which was significantly inhibited in VSMCs pre-exposed to tiron or indomethacin. Our data suggest that ethanol induces vasoconstriction via redox-sensitive and COX-dependent pathways, probably through direct effects on ROS production and Ca(2+) signalling. These findings identify putative molecular mechanisms whereby ethanol, at high concentrations, influences vascular reactivity. Whether similar phenomena occur in vivo at lower concentrations of ethanol remains unclear.

Interval-censored survival data, in which the event of interest is not observed exactly but is only known to occur within some time interval, occur very frequently. In some situations, event times might be censored into different, possibly overlapping intervals of variable widths; however, in other situations, information is available for all units at the same observed visit time. In the latter cases, interval-censored data are termed grouped survival data. Here we present alternative approaches for analyzing interval-censored data. We illustrate these techniques using a survival data set involving mango tree lifetimes. This study is an example of grouped survival data.

In this study, the production of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) and up-regulation in cyclooxygenase (COX) pathway induced by a phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)), myotoxin-III (MT-III), purified from Bothrops asper snake venom, in isolated neutrophils were investigated. The arachidonic acid (AA) production and the participation of intracellular PLA(2)s (cytosolic PLA(2) and Ca(2+)-independent PLA(2)) in these events were also evaluated. MT-III induced COX-2, but not COX-1 gene and protein expression in neutrophils and increased PGE(2) levels. Pretreatment of neutrophils with COX-2 and COX-1 inhibitors reduced PGE(2) production induced by MT-III. Arachidonyl trifluoromethyl ketone (AACOCF(3)), an intracellular PLA(2) inhibitor, but not bromoenol lactone (BEL), an iPLA(2) inhibitor, suppressed the MT-III-induced AA and PGE(2) release. In conclusion, MT-III directly stimulates neutrophils inducing COX-2 mRNA and protein expression followed by production of PGE(2). COX-2 isoform is preeminent over COX-1 for production of PGE(2) stimulated by MT-III. PGE(2) and AA release by MT-III probably is related to cPLA(2) activation. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The effects of myotoxin III (MT-III), a phospholipase A(2) (sPLA(2)) from Bothrops asper snake venom, and crotoxin B (CB), a neurotoxic and myotoxic sPLA2 from the venom of Crotalus durissus terrificus, on cyclooxygenases (COXs) expression and biosynthesis of prostaglandins (PGs) were evaluated, together with the mechanisms involved in these effects. Upon intraperitoneal injection in mice, both sPLA(2)s promoted the synthesis of PGD(2) and PGE(2), with a different time-course. MT-III, but not CB, induced COX-2 expression by peritoneal leukocytes without modification on COX-1 constitutive expression, whereas CB increased the constitutive activity of COX-1. MT-III increased the enzymatic activity of COX-1 and COX-2. Similar effects were observed when these sPLA(2)s were incubated with isolated macrophages, evidencing a direct effect on these inflammatory cells. Moreover, both toxins elicited the release of arachidonic acid from macrophages in vitro. inhibition of cPLA(2) by AACOCF(3), but not of iPLA(2) by PACOCF(3) or BEL, significantly reduced PGD2, PGE2 and arachidonic acid (AA) release promoted by MT-III. These inhibitors did not affect MT-III-induced COX-2 expression. In contrast, cPLA2 inhibition did not modify the effects of CB, whereas iPLA2 inhibition reduced PGD2 and AA production induced by CB. These findings imply that distinct regulatory mechanisms leading to PGs` synthesis are triggered by these snake venom sPLA(2)s. Such differences are likely to explain the dissimilar patterns of inflammatory reaction elicited by these sPLA(2)s in vivo. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study evaluated the participation of mu-opioid-receptor activation in body temperature (T-b) during normal and febrile conditions (including activation of heat conservation mechanisms) and in different pathways of LPS-induced fever. The intracerebroventricular treatment of male Wistar rats with the selective opioid mu-receptor-antagonist cyclic D-Phe-Cys-Try-D-Trp-Arg-Thr-Pen-Thr-NH2 (CTAP; 0.1-1.0 mu g) reduced fever induced by LPS (5.0 mu g/kg) but did not change Tb at ambient temperatures of either 20 C or 28 C. The subcutaneous, intracerebroventricular, and intrahypothalamic injection of morphine (1.0 -10.0 mg/kg, 3.0 -30.0 mu g, and 1 -100 ng, respectively) produced a dose-dependent increase in Tb. Intracerebroventricular morphine also produced a peripheral vasoconstriction. Both effects were abolished by CTAP. CTAP (1.0 mu g icv) reduced the fever induced by intracerebroventricular administration of TNF-alpha (250 ng), IL-6 (300 ng), CRF (2.5 mu g), endothelin-1 (1.0 pmol), and macrophage inflammatory protein (500 pg) and the first phase of the fever induced by PGF(2 alpha) (500.0 ng) but not the fever induced by IL-1 beta (3.12 ng) or PGE(2) (125.0 ng) or the second phase of the fever induced by PGF(2 alpha). Morphine-induced fever was not modified by the cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor indomethacin (2.0 mg/kg). In addition, morphine injection did not induce the expression of COX-2 in the hypothalamus, and CTAP did not modify PGE2 levels in cerebrospinal fluid or COX-2 expression in the hypothalamus after LPS injection. In conclusion, our results suggest that LPS and endogenous pyrogens (except IL-1 beta and prostaglandins) recruit the opioid system to cause a mu-receptor-mediated fever.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The consequences of compensatory responses to balloon catheter injury in rat carotid artery, on phenylephrine-induced relaxation and contraction in the contralateral carotid artery were studied. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Relaxation and contraction concentration-response curves for phenylephrine were obtained for contralateral carotid arteries in the presence of indomethacin (COX inhibitor), SC560 (COX-1 inhibitor), SC236 (COX-2 inhibitor) or 4-hydroxytetramethyl-L-piperidine-1-oxyl (tempol; superoxide dismutase mimetic). Reactive oxygen species were measured in carotid artery endothelial cells fluorimetrically with dihydroethidium. KEY RESULTS Phenylephrine-induced relaxation was abolished in contralateral carotid arteries from operated rats (E(max) = 0.01 +/- 0.004 g) in relation to control (E(max) = 0.18 +/- 0.005 g). Phenylephrine-induced contractions were increased in contralateral arteries (E(max) = 0.54 +/- 0.009 g) in relation to control (E(max) = 0.38 +/- 0.014 g). SC236 restored phenylephrine-induced relaxation (E(max) = 0.17 +/- 0.004 g) and contraction (E(max) = 0.34 +/- 0.018 g) in contralateral arteries. Tempol restored phenylephrine-induced relaxation (E(max) = 0.19 +/- 0.012 g) and contraction (E(max) = 0.42 +/- 0.014 g) in contralateral arteries, while apocynin did not alter either relaxation (E(max) = 0.01 +/- 0.004 g) or contraction (E(max) = 0.54 +/- 0.009 g). Dihydroethidium fluorescence was increased in contralateral samples (18 882 +/- 435 U) in relation to control (10 455 +/- 303 U). SC236 reduced the fluorescence in contralateral samples (8250 +/- 365 U). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Balloon catheter injury abolished phenylephrine-induced relaxation and increased phenylephrine-induced contraction in contralateral carotid arteries, through O(2)(-) derived from COX-2.

Fluoxetine (FIX) is a drug commonly used as antidepressant. However, its effects on tumorigenesis remain controversial. Aiming to evaluate the effects of FIX treatment on early malignant changes, we analyzed serotonin (5-HT) metabolism and recognition, aberrant crypt foci (ACF), proliferative process, microvessels, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in colon tissue. Male Wistar rats received a daily FLX-gavage (30 mg kg(-1)) and, a single dose of 1.2 dimethylhydrazine (DMH; i.p., 125 mg kg(-1)). After 6 weeks of FIX-treatment, our results revealed that FIX and nor-fluoxetine (N-FIX) are present in colon tissue, which was related to significant increase in serotonin (5-HT) levels (P < 0.05) possibly through a blockade in SERT mRNA (serotonin reuptake transporter; P < 0.05) resulting in lower 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) levels (P < 0.01) and, 5-HT2C receptor mRNA expressions. FIX-treatment decreased dysplastic ACF development (P < 0.01) and proliferative process (P < 0.001) in epithelia. We observed a significant decrease in the development of malignant microvessels (P < 0.05), VEGF (P < 0.001), and COX-2 expression (P < 0.01). These findings suggest that FIX may have oncostatic effects on carcinogenic colon tissue, probably due to its modulatory activity on 5-HT metabolism and/or its ability to reduce colonic malignant events. This study investigates the effects of chronic methionine intake on bradykinin (BK)-relaxation. Vascular reactivity experiments were performed on carotid rings from male Wistar rats. Treatment with methionine (0.1, 1 or 2 g kg(-1) per day) for 8 and 16 weeks, but not for 2 and 4 weeks, reduced the relaxation induced by BK. Indomethacin, a non-selective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor, and SQ29548, a selective thromboxane A(2) (TXA(2))/prostaglandin H(2) (PGH(2)) receptor antagonist prevented the reduction in BK-relaxation observed in the carotid from methionine-treated rats. Conversely, AH6809, a selective prostaglandin F(2 alpha) (PGF(2 alpha)) receptor antagonist did not alter BK-relaxation in the carotid from methionine-treated rats. The nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors L-NAME, L-NNA and 7-nitroindazole reduced the relaxation induced by BK in carotids from control and methionine-treated rats. In summary, we found that chronic methionine intake impairs the endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by BK and this effect is due to an increased production of endothelial vasoconstrictor prostanoids (possibly TXA(2)) that counteracts the relaxant action displayed by the peptide.
