The metastable phase diagram of the BCC-based ordering equilibria in the Ti-Fe system has been calculated using a truncated cluster expansion, through the combination of FP-LAPW and cluster variation method (CVM) in the irregular tetrahedron cluster approximation. The results are compared with phenomenological CVM assessments of the system and suggest that the value for the experimental formation enthalpy of the B2-TiFe compound should be significantly more negative than the currently assessed value. The Cluster Variation Method (CVM), introduced over 50 years ago by Prof. Dr. Ryoichi Kikuchi, is applied to the thermodynamic modeling of the BCC Cr-Fe system in the irregular tetrahedron approximation, using experimental thermochemical data as initial input for accessing the model parameters. The results are checked against independent data on the low-temperature miscibility gap, using increasingly accurate thermodynamic models, first by the inclusion of the magnetic degrees of freedom of iron and then also by the inclusion of the magnetic degrees of freedom of chromium. It is shown that a reasonably accurate description of the phase diagram at the iron-rich side (i.e. the miscibility gap borders and the Curie line) is obtained, but only at expense of the agreement with the above mentioned thermochemical data. Reasons for these inconsistencies are discussed, especially with regard to the need of introducing vibrational degrees of freedom in the CVM model. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ocotea catharinensis is a rare tree species indigenous to the Atlantic rainforest of South America. In spite of its value as a hardwood species, it is in danger of extinction. The species erratically produces seeds showing irregular flowering and slow growth. Therefore, plants are not easily replaced. Tissue culture-based techniques are commonly used for obtaining living material for tree propagation and in vitro preservation. Therefore, a high-frequency somatic embryogenic system was developed for the species. In the present work, the genetic fidelity of cell aggregates and somatic embryos at various stages of in vitro development of O. catharinensis was investigated using RAPD and AFLP markers. Both analyses confirmed the absence of genetic variation in all developmental stages of O. catharinensis embryogenic cultures, verifying that the in vitro system is genetically stable. The cultures were also analyzed for their methylation profiles at 5`-CCGG-3` sites by identifying methylation-sensitive amplification polymorphisms. Some of these markers differentiated cell aggregates from embryo bodies. The sequencing of ten MSAP markers revealed that four sequences showed significant similarity to genes encoding plant proteins. Particularly, the predicted amino acid sequence of the fragment designated as OcEaggHMttc155 was similar to the enzyme 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase (ACO), which is involved in the biosynthesis of ethylene, and its expression was reported to occur from the beginning to the intermediate stages of plant embryo development. Here, we suggest that this enzyme is possibly involved in the control of the earliest stages of somatic embryogenesis of O. catharinensis, and an approach to study ACO expression during somatic embryogenesis is proposed.

The starch of maca (Lepidium meyenii Walpers) presented oval and irregular morphology, with granule size between 7.4 and 14.9 mu m in length and 5.8 and 9.3 mu m in diameter. The isolated starch showed the following features: purity of 87.8%, with 0.28% lipids, 0.2% fibre and 0.12% fixed mineral residue, and no protein detected; the ratio between the amylose and amylopectin contents were 20:80: the solubility at 90 degrees C was 61.4%, the swelling power was 119.0g water/g starch and the water absorption capacity was 45.9 g water/g starch; the gel turbidity rose 44% during the storing time; the gelatinization temperature was 47.7 degrees C and the transition enthalpy 6.22 J/g; the maximum viscosity reached 1260 UB at 46.4 degrees C, with breakdown, setback and consistence of 850, 440 and -410 UB, respectively. The low gelling temperature and the stability during gel refrigeration could be adequate for foods requiring moderate temperature process, but not for frozen food. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of this research was to perform a stability testing of spray- and spouted bed-dried extracts of Passiflora alata Dryander (Passion flower) under stress storage conditions. Spouted bed- and spray-dried extracts were characterized by determination of the average particle diameter (dP), apparent moisture content (XP), total flavonoid content (TF), and vitexin content. Smaller and more irregular particles were generated by the spouted bed system due to a higher attrition rate (surface erosion) inside the dryer. The SB dryer resulted in an end product with higher concentration of flavonoids (approximate to 10%) and lower moisture content (1.6%, dry basis) than the spray dryer, even with both dryers working at similar inlet drying air temperature and ratio between the extract feed flow rate to drying air flow rate (Ws/Wg). Samples of the spouted bed- and spray-dried extracts were stored at two different temperatures (34 and 45 degrees C) and two different relative humidities (52 and 63% RH for 34 degrees C; 52 and 60% RH for 45 degrees C) in order to perform the stability testing. The dried extracts were stored for 28 days and were analyzed every 4 days. The flavonoid vitexin served as the marker compound, which was assayed during the storage period. Results revealed shelf lives ranging from 9 to 184 days, depending on the drying process and storage conditions.

The feasibility of detecting instability in wet spouted beds via pressure fluctuation (PF) time-series analyses was investigated. Experiments were carried out in a cylindrical Plexiglas column of diameter 150 mm with a conical base of internal angle 60 degrees, an inlet orifice diameter of 25 mm and glass beads of diameter 2.4 mm. Transducers at several axial positions measured PF time series with incremental addition of aqueous sucrose solutions of different concentrations. Liquid addition affected the spouted bed dynamics, causing irregular spouting, increased voidage in the annulus, increased fountain height, irregular annulus height, channelling, agglomeration, and adhesion of particles to the column walls. Autocorrelations indicated the appearance of periodicities in the PF signals with increasing sucrose addition. Dominant peaks in power-spectral density developed at low frequencies with changing system dynamics. The results indicate that PF signals furnish relevant information on system dynamics, useful for monitoring and control of spouted bed operations such as particle coating and drying of paste-like materials.

The purposes of this study were to evaluate in vitro the influence of different frequencies of Er:YAG laser on the human dentin caries removal capacity. Thirty fragments obtained from third molars were randomly assigned into three groups (n = 10) according to the laser frequency used: 4, 6, and 10 Hz. The caries lesion (+/-1 mm deep) was induced before the irradiation by S. mutans cultures for 6 weeks. The specimens of all groups were irradiated with 200 mJ of energy in noncontact and focused mode under constant refrigeration (water flow: 2.5 mL/min). Quantitative analysis of the caries removal was performed by DIAGNOdent (TM) and the Axion Vision (TM) software. Qualitative analysis was performed by Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and light microscope (LM). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Fishers` tests. The DIAGNOdent (TM) revealed that the caries removal was similar with 4 and 6 Hz and was superior with 10 Hz (P < 0.05). The analysis with Axion Vision (TM) software revealed that the caries removal was similar with 6 and 10 Hz and the 4 Hz group promoted the lowest caries removal. Through SEM morphologic analysis, some specimens irradiated with 4 Hz presented, under the demineralized dentin, a disorganized collagenous matrix. The LM images revealed that all frequencies used promoted irregular caries removal, being observed over preparations with 6 and 10 Hz. It can be concluded that the increase of Er:YAG laser frequency provided a higher dentin caries removal without selectivity to the disorganized dentin. Microsc. Res. Tech. 74:281-286, 2011. Luminescent and morphological studies of Sr(2)CeO(4) blue phosphor prepared from cerium-doped strontium oxalate precursor are reported Powder samples were prepared from 5 and 25 mol% Ce(3+)-doped strontium oxalate as well as from a mechanical mixture of strontium oxalate and cerium oxalate at a 4 1 ratio respectively All the samples were characterized by XRD IR PLS and SEM The luminescent and structural properties of the Sr(2)CeO(4) material are little affected by the SrCO(3) remaining from precursors The Sr(2)CeO(4) material consists in one-dimensional chains of edge-sharing CeO(6) octahedra that are linked together by Sr(2+) ions The carbonate ion might be associated with oxygen ions of the linear chain and also with the oxygen atoms located in the equatorial position which consequently affects the charge transfer bands between O(2-) and Ce(4+). As observed by SEM, the morphological changes are related to each kind of precursor and thermal treatment along with irregular powder particles within the size range 05-2 mu m (c) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

Recent investigations in the upper Rio Huallaga in Peru revealed the presence of an intriguing species of the Loricariinae. To characterize and place this species within the evolutionary tree of the subfamily, a molecular phylogeny of this group was inferred based on the 12S and 16S mitochondrial genes and the nuclear gene F-reticulon4. The phylogeny indicated that this distinctive species was a member of the subtribe Loricariina. Given its phylogenetic placement, and its unusual morphology, this species is described as a new genus and new species of Loricariinae: Fonchiiloricaria nanodon. This new taxon is diagnosed by usually possessing one to three premaxillary teeth that are greatly reduced; lips with globular papillae on the surface; the distal margin of lower lip bearing short, triangular filaments; the premaxilla greatly reduced; the abdomen completely covered by plates, with the plates between lateral abdominal plates small and rhombic; a caudal fin with 14 rays; the orbital notch absent; five lateral series of plates; dorsal-fin spinelet absent; preanal plate present, large and solid, and of irregular, polygonal shape, the caudal peduncle becoming more compressed posteriorly for the last seven to 10 plates. BACKGROUND Marshall bundles (MBs) are the muscle bundles within the ligament of Marshall. OBJECTIVE This trial sought to the electrophysiological characteristics of the MB and the anatomical connections between MB and left atrium (LA) in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS We enrolled 72 patients (male: female 59: 13, age 59.9 +/- 9.4 years) who underwent MB mapping and ablation for AF. MB mapping was done via an endocardial or epicardial approach during sinus rhythm and AF. RESULTS Recordings were successful in 64 of 72 patients (89%). A single connection was noted in 11 of 64 patients between the MB and the coronary sinus (CS) muscle sleeves. The MB recordings showed distinct MB potentials with a proximal-to-distal activation pattern during sinus rhythm. During AF, organized passive activations and dissociated slow MB ectopic activities were commonly observed in this type of connection. Double connections to both CS and LA around left pulmonary veins were noted in 23 of 64 patients (36%). After the ablation of the distal connection, MB recording showed typical double potentials as in single connection. Multiple connections were noted in 30 of 64 patients (47%). During sinus rhythm, the earliest activation was in the middle of the MB. The activation patterns were irregular and variable in each patient. During AF, rapid and fractionated complex activations were noted in all patients of this group. CONCLUSION We documented 3 different types of MB-LA connections. Rapid and fractionated activations were most commonly observed in the MB that had multiple LA connections.

Background: Approximately 60% of meningiomas are associated with peritumoral edema. Various causative factors have been discussed in the literature. The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation of PTBE with clinical, radiologic, and surgical aspects and recurrence of meningiomas. Methods: Sixty-one patients with benign meningiomas were chosen for surgical treatment by the Group of Brain Tumors and Metastasis of the Department of Neurosurgery. All patients underwent complete surgical resection (Simpson grades I and 2), and those with atypical and malignant histopathologic grades were excluded. Tumors located in the cavernous sinus, tuberculum sellae, foramen magnum, ventricles, and petroclival region were excluded. Results: Edema extension had a positive correlation with the higher recurrence rates (P=.042) and with the presence of irregular margins (P<.011) on bivariate analysis. Meningiomas with larger edema sizes also showed correlation with large meningiomas (P=.035), and the ones with smaller edema sizes correlated with the tentorial location (P=.032). Multivariate analysis showed an association between PTBE and the presence of seizures (odds ratio, 3.469), large meningiomas (odds ratio, 15.977), and for each cubic centimeter added to its size, the risk of edema increased 1.082 times (odds ratio). Conclusion: Peritumoral brain edema may be related to the invading potential of meningiomas and may play a role in the recurrence potential of the tumor. As a consequence, it is reasonable to consider the presence of edema as an additional factor to be taken into account when mapping out strategies for the treatment of meningiomas. Juvenile nasopharingeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a histologically benign locally aggressive tumor characterized by irregular vessels embedded. in a fibrous stroma. Excessive vascularity results in bleeding complications, and the inhibition of angiogenesis is a promising strategy for managing extensive JNA tumors. To better characterize the endothelial components of JNA, we aimed to evaluate markers of vascular differentiation and proliferation, such as friend leukemia integration-1 (FLI-1) and endoglin, lymphatic markers, including podoplanin and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 (VEGFR3) and its cognate ligand VEGFC, GLUT-1, a diagnostic marker that discriminates between hemangiomas and vascular malformations, and two markers of tissue remodeling, stromelysin 3 (ST3) and secreted acid protein rich in cysteine (SPARC). Antigens were assessed immunohistochemically in vessels and stromal cells of JNA archival cases (n=22). JNA endothelial cells were positive for endoglin, VEGFC and FLI-1, whereas podoplanin and VEGFR3 were negative in all cases. Both endothelial cells and fibroblasts stained for ST3 and SPARC. GLUT-1 was investigated in JNA cases, in infantile hemangiomas (n=123) and in vascular malformations (n=135) as controls. JNAs and vascular malformations were GLUT-1-negative, while hemangiomas showed positive staining. The presence of markers of endothelial differentiation and proliferation highlighted the hyper-proliferative state of JNA vessels. The absence of podoplanin and VEGFR3 underscores their blood endothelial cell characteristic. The absence of GLUT-1 discriminates JNAs from hemangiomas. ST3 and SPARC up-regulation in endothelial cells and fibroblasts may contribute to a compensatory signaling for controlling angiogenesis. Some of these markers may eventually serve as therapeutic targets. Our results may aid in the understanding of JNA pathophysiology.

Cutaneous asthenia is a hereditary connective tissue disease, primarily of dogs and cats, resembling Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in man. Collagen dysplasia results in skin hyperextensibility, skin and vessel fragility, and poor wound healing. The purpose of this study was to describe the histological findings in a dog with a collagenopathy consistent with cutaneous asthenia. An 8-month-old crossbreed female dog presented with lacerations and numerous atrophic and irregular scars. The skin was hyperextensible and easily torn by the slightest trauma. Ultrastructurally, the dermis was comprised of elaunin and oxytalan microfibrils. These are immature fibres in which the fibrillar component is increased but elastin is reduced. Collagen fibres were profoundly disorganized. The fibrils had a highly irregular outline and a corroded appearance when viewed in cross-section, and were spiralled and fragmented in a longitudinal view. Dermal fibroblasts displayed a conspicuous thickening of the nuclear lamina. Nuclear lamins form a fibrous nucleoskeletal network of intermediate-sized filaments underlying the inner nuclear membrane. Mutations in lamins or lamin-associated proteins cause a myriad of genetic diseases collectively called laminopathies. Disruption of the nuclear lamina seems to affect chromatin organization and transcriptional regulation of gene expression. A common link among all laminopathies may be a failure of stem cells to regenerate mesenchymal tissue. This could contribute to the connective tissue dysplasia seen in cutaneous asthenia.

Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor is a distinctive but rare trophoblastic tumor. It derives from intermediate trophoblastic cells of the chorion laeve and is usually associated with a previous gestational event. We report the case of a patient who had undergone dilatation and curettage for a missed miscarriage. Three months later gestational trophoblastic disease was suspected because of persistent vaginal bleeding and high levels of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG). Transvaginal ultrasound revealed irregular echolucent lacunae within the myometrium, some of them filled with low-resistance, turbulent blood flow on Doppler examination, emphasizing the diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic disease. The patient was treated with 12 courses of multiagent chemotherapy. After a 2-year remission, a low rise in serum beta-hCG was observed. Transvaginal ultrasound revealed a well-circumscribed echogenic lesion with a diameter of 1.8 cm in the uterine fundus, with no detectable blood flow on Doppler imaging. A diagnosis of tumor of intermediate trophoblastic cells was suspected and total hysterectomy was performed. On pathological examination, the histological and immunohistochemical features were characteristic of epithelioid trophoblastic tumor. Most reported cases of epithelioid trophoblastic tumor have solitary nodules with sharp margins, which is consistent with our ultrasound findings. Ultrasound may be helpful in differentiating epithelioid trophoblastic tumor from placental-site trophoblastic tumor, another tumor of intermediate trophoblastic cells, which shows infiltrative growth insinuating between muscle fibers. The purpose of this study was to determine whether bone marrow-derived cells can differentiate into myofibroblasts, as defined by alpha-smooth muscle actin (SMA) expression, that arise in the corneal stroma after irregular phototherapeutic keratectomy and whose presence within the cornea is associated with corneal stromal haze. C578L/6J-GFP chimeric mice were generated through bone marrow transplantation from donor mice that expressed enhanced green fluorescent protein (GFP) in a high proportion of their bone marrow-derived cells. Twenty-four GFP chimeric mice underwent haze-generating corneal epithelial scrape followed by irregular phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) with an excimer laser in one eye. Mice were euthanized at 2 weeks or 4 weeks after PTK and the treated and control contralateral eyes were removed and cryo-preserved for sectioning for immunocytochemistry. Double immunocytochemistry for GFP and myofibroblast marker alpha-smooth muscle actin (SMA) were performed and the number of SMA+GFP+, SMA+GFP, SMA-GFP+ and SMA GFP cells, as well as the number of DAPI+ cell nuclei, per 400x field of stroma was determined in the central, mid-peripheral and peri-limbal cornea. In this mouse model, there were no SMA+ cells and only a few GFP+ cells detected in unwounded control corneas. No SMA+ cells were detected in the stroma at two weeks after irregular PTK, even though there were numerous GFP+ cells present. At 4 weeks after irregular PTK, all corneas developed mild to moderately severe corneal haze. In each of the three regions of the corneas examined, there were on average more than 9x more SMA+GFP+ than SMA+GFP myofibroblasts. This difference was significant (p < 0.01). There were significantly more (p < 0.01) SMA GFP+ cells, which likely include inflammatory cells, than SMA+GFP+ or SMA+GFP cells, although SMA GFP cells represent the largest population of cells in the corneas. In this mouse model, the majority of myofibroblasts developed from bone marrow-derived cells. It is possible that all myofibroblasts in these animals developed from bone marrow-derived cells since mouse chimeras produced using this method had only 60-95% of bone marrow-derived cells that were GFP+ and it is not possible to achieve 100% chimerization. This model, therefore, cannot exclude the possibility of myofibroblasts also developed from keratocytes and/or corneal fibroblasts. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
