Several composites based on high-density polyethylene (PE), organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) and ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymer (EMAA) were prepared by melt compounding. Three Na(+)-montmorillonites (MMT) of different precedence were modified with hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride in order to change their nature from hydrophilic to organophilic. The composites morphology was examined by XRD, SEM and TEM. Mechanical properties were evaluated under static conditions. A slight reinforcement was achieved only when OMMT was added to PE. When EMAA was added to the composites, it negatively interacted with OMMT, diminishing the interlayer distance of OMMT, changing the composite morphology, as if OMMT was not present in composites, and deteriorating their mechanical properties. In the present work we report the characterization of PbO-GeO(2) films containing silver nanoparticles (NPs). Radio Frequency (RF) co-sputtering was used for deposition of amorphous films on glass substrates. Targets of 60PbO-40GeO(2) (in wt%) and bulk silver with purity of 99.99% were RF-sputtered using 3.5 m Torr of argon. The concentration of silver and gold NPs in the films was controlled varying the RF-power applied to the targets (40-50W for the PbO-GeO(2) target; 6-8 W for the metallic target). The films obtained were annealed in air at different temperatures and various periods of time. Absorption measurements have shown strong NPs surface plasmon bands. Different widths and peak wavelengths were observed, indicating that size, shape and distribution of the silver NPs are dependent on the deposition process parameters and on the annealing of the samples. X-Ray Fluorescence and Transmission Electron Microscopy were also used to characterize the samples. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Laponite-derived materials represent promising materials for optical applications. In this work, Eu(3+)- or Er(3+)-doped laponite xerogels and films were prepared from colloidal dispersion. Homogeneous, crack-free and transparent single layers were deposited on soda-lime substrates with a thickness of 10 mu m. Structural and spectroscopic properties were analyzed by thermal analyses, X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy. The addition of a rare earth ion to the laponite does not promote any changes in thermal stability or phase transition. Laponite clay was identified after annealing up to 500 degrees C, with a decrease in basal spacing when the annealing temperature is changed from 100 degrees C to 500 degrees C. Enstatite polymorphs and amorphous silicate phases were observed after heat treatment at 700 degrees C and 900 degrees C. Stationary and time-dependent luminescence spectra in the visible region for Eu(3+), and (5)D(0) lifetime are discussed in terms of thermal treatment and structural evolution. In the layered host, the Eu(3+) ions are distributed in many different local environments. However, Eu(3+) ions were found to occupy at least two symmetry sites, and the ions are preferentially incorporated into the crystalline enstatite for the materials annealed at 700 degrees C and 900 degrees C. A (5)D(0) lifetime of 1.3 ms and 3.1 ms was obtained for Eu(3+) ions in an amorphous silicate and crystalline MgSiO(3) local environment, respectively. Strong Er(3+) emission at the 1550 nm region was observed for the materials annealed at 900 degrees C, with a bandwidth of 44 nm. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Maghemite-based bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanocomposites have been investigated using photoacustic spectroscopy (PAS). Features in the PAS spectra were analyzed in terms of three bands (band-C, band-S, and band-L). Though the observed PAS peak positions are insensitive to the nanoparticle concentration the PAS peak intensity displays a different behaviour. For band-C the PAS intensity scales almost linearly with the nanoparticle concentration in the hosting template. Nevertheless, it was found that the PAS intensity of band-L scales sub-linearly with the nanoparticle concentration.

This article reports a study on the preparation, densification process, and structural and optical properties of SiO(2)-Ta(2)O(5) nanocomposite films obtained by the sol-gel process. The films were doped with Er(3+) and the Si:Ta molar ratio was 90:10. Values of refractive index, thickness and vibrational modes in terms of the number of layers and thermal annealing time are described for the films. The densification process is accompanied by OH group elimination, increase in the refractive index, and changes in film thickness. Full densification of the film is acquired after 90 min of annealing at 900 degrees C. The onset of crystallization and devitrification, with the growth of Ta(2)O(5) nanocrystals occurs with film densification, evidenced by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The Er(3+)-doped nanocomposite annealed at 900 degrees C consists of Ta(2)O(5) nanoparticles, with sizes around 2 nm, dispersed in the SiO(2) amorphous phase. The main emission peak of the film is detected at around 1532 nm, which can be assigned to the (4)I(13/2)->(4)I(15/2) transition of the Er(3+) ions present in the nanocomposites. This band has a full width at half medium of 64 nm, and the lifetime measured for the (4)I(13/2) levels is 5.4 ms, which is broader compared to those of other silicate systems. In conclusion, the films obtained in this work are excellent candidates for use as active planar waveguide. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Semi-interpenetrating networks (Semi-IPNs) with different compositions were prepared from poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by the sol-gel process in this study. The characterization of the PDMS/PVA semi-IPN was carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and swelling measurements. The presence of PVA domains dispersed in the PDMS network disrupted the network and allowed PDMS to crystallize, as observed by the crystallization and melting peaks in the DSC analyses. Because of the presence of hydrophilic (-OH) and hydrophobic (Si-(CH(3))(2)) domains, there was an appropriate hydrophylic/hydrophobic balance in the semi-IPNs prepared, which led to a maximum equilibrium water content of similar to 14 wt % without a loss in the ability to swell less polar solvents. Vanadyl phosphate and its hybrid compounds have proven to undergo electrochemical intercalation and de-intercalation of lithium ions, which enables its use as cathode material for Li ion rechargeable batteries. In this context, vanadyl phosphate di-hydrate/polyaniline derivatives hybrid films were synthesized via the exfoliation and reconstruction approach in order to evaluate their potential use as cathode in ion lithium batteries. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the lamellar structure of the inorganic matrix is maintained, consistent with the topotactic process. In the scanning electron micrographs, hybrid films exhibit rough surface consisting of warped and cracked crystallites, quite different from vanadyl phosphate di-hydrate square platelets crystallites. Electrochemical evaluation using cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge galvanostatic techniques shows small differences between the charge and the discharge curves, indicating an irreversibility of the hybrid systems. The search for an ideal filler for soft tissue augmentation still continues. Because aging changes are continuous, temporary fillers should be preferred against permanent ones. Since 1999, the poly-L-lactic acid filler (PLA) has been marketed in Europe as Newfill. As a synthetic biocompatible polymer, PLA originally was used in suture materials and screws. In 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved PLA under the name of Sculptra for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus-related facial lipoatrophy. This study aimed to evaluate a 3-year follow-up investigation into the effect of PLA implant injection for the treatment of sunken nasolabial folds. Between October 2003 and February 2004, 10 women with a median age of 54 years (range, 43-60 years) were injected with polylactic acid hydrogel (Newfill) in the nasolabial fold area for aesthetic reasons. All the patients underwent three injections: one injection per month for 3 months. Evaluation of the results based on clinical examination and photography was performed at each session, at 6 months, and then 36 months after the third session. Injectable PLA was able to correct nasolabial folds successfully with a more lasting result than absorbable fillers commonly used in clinical practice, such as hyaluronic acid and collagen. Careful and standardized photographic documentation is indispensable.

Purpose: To evaluate the use of orbital polyacrylamide gel injection for the correction of anophthalmic enophthalmos. Methods: Noncontrolled clinical trial of 21 patients (14 with ocular implants, 5 with phthisis bulbi, and 2 with dermis-fat graft). Orbital CT was performed to estimate the volume of polyacrylamide gel needed to restore orbital volume. Polyacrylamide gel was injected using a 22-gauge (30 x 0.7 min) needle transcutaneously inserted in the lateral third of the lower eyelid, directed to the orbital muscle cone. A second injection was administered 15 days later. if necessary. CT was repeated 30 days after the last procedure. Exophthalmometry was performed before Bind 90 days after file procedure. Results: The mean total volume injected per orbit was 2.4 +/- 0.7 ml (range 1-3.5 ml). The volume of the enophthalmic orbit increased front 26.9 +/- 5.0 ml to 29.3 +/- 4.9 ml (p < 0.001). The mean difference in exophthalmometry readings was 3.3 +/- 1.6 mm (range, 1.5-8.0 mm) before the procedure and 1.0 +/- 0.9 mm (range, 0.0-3.0 mm) after 3 months (p < 0.001). Adjustment of the ocular prosthesis or fabrication of a new one was necessary in 11 patients (52.4%), and the mean volume of the ocular prosthesis was reduced front 2.0 +/- 0.6 ml to 1.6 +/- 0.6 ml (p = 0.003). All patients were satisfied with the aesthetic results. No serious adverse events were observed. The initial results were maintained 1 year after the procedure. Conclusions: Polyacrylamide gel injection in the orbital space effectively reduces enophthalmos in ocular prosthesis wearers.

This in vivo study evaluated the osteogenic potential of two proteins, recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and a protein extracted from natural latex (Hevea brasiliensis, P-1), and compared their effects on bone defects when combined with a carrier or a collagen gelatin. Eighty-four (84) Wistar rats were divided into two groups, with and without the use of collagen gelatin, and each of these were divided into six treatment groups of seven animals each. The treatment groups were: (1) 5 mu g of pure rhBMP-2; (2) 5 mu g of rhBMP-2/monoolein gel; (3) pure monoolein gel; (4) 5 mu g of pure P-1; (5) 5 mu g of P-1/monoolein gel; (6) critical bone defect control. The animals were anesthetized and a 6 mm diameter critical bone defect was made in the left posterior region of the parietal bone. Animals were submitted to intracardiac perfusion after 4 weeks and the calvaria tissue was removed for histomorphometric analysis. In this experimental study, it was concluded that rhBMP-2 allowed greater new bone formation than P-1 protein and this process was more effective when the bone defect was covered with collagen gelatin (P < 0.05). Polysilsesquioxanes containing methacrylate pendant groups were prepared by the sol-gel process through hydrolysis and condensation of (3-methacryloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTS) dissolved in a methanol/methyl methacrylate (MMA) mixture. The effects of different water, MMA, and methanol contents, as well as of pH, on the nanoscopic and local structures of the system, at advanced stages of the condensation reaction, were studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and (29)Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, respectively. SAXS results indicate that the nanoscopic features of the hybrid sol could be described by a hierarchical model composed of two levels, namely (i) silsesquioxane (SSQO) nanoparticles Surrounded by the methacrylate pendant groups and the methanol/MMA mixture. and (ii) aggregation zones or islands containing correlated SSQO nanoparticles, embedded in the liquid medium. The (29)Si NMR results Show that the inner Structures of SSQO nanoparticles produced at pH 1 and 3 were built Up of polyhedral structures. mainly cagelike octamers and small linear oligomers, respectively. Irrespective of MMA and methanol contents, for a [H(2)O]/[MPTS] ratio higher than or equal to 1, the SSQO nailoparticles produced at pH I exhibit an average condensation degree (CD approximate to 69-87%) and average radius of gyration (R(g) approximate to 2.5 angstrom) larger than those produced at pH 3 (CD approximate to 48-67% and R(g) approximate to 1.5 angstrom). Methanol appears to act as a redispersion agent, by decreasing the number of particles inside the aggregation zones, while the addition of MMA induces a swelling of the aggregation zones.

The hysteretic behavior of mechanically alloyed nanocomposites FeCo + MnO was studied at high temperatures. These composites present an unusual high and thermally stable coercivity, compared to FeCo milled at equal conditions. Coercivity enhancement was observed in hysteresis loops obtained between room temperature and 750 K. It is attributed to the isolation of the FeCo ferromagnetic particles by the paramagnetic MnO (T(N) = 120 K). The M(rev)(M(irr))(H) curves are clearly linear for the composite, indicating that coherent rotation is the reversal mechanism in these materials. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The addition of both Ti-C and Cr as grain refiners in Nd-Fe-B nanocomposites substantially increases the coercive field Hc. This motived our investigation of the effect of Ti-C and Cr on Pr-Fe-B nanocomposites. Melt-spun ribbons of composition (Pr(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6))(0.97-x)Cr(x)(TiC)(0.03)(x = 0; 0.25; 0.5; 0.75; 1) and (Nd(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6))(0.97-x)Cr(x)(TiC)(0.03)(x = 0.5 and 1) were produced for study. For a Pr nanocomposite with 1% Cr, Hc = 12.5 kOe. However, the energy product was limited to 13.6 MGOe by the remanence value. Rietveld analysis of X-ray spectra showed the ribbons to consist of predominantly hard (similar to 70 wt%) R(2)Fe(14)B, the soft phase being (similar to 30 wt%) alpha-Fe. Mossbauer measurements at 300 K are consistent with a reduced hyperfine field for the hard magnetic phase due to the Cr addition. Analysis of transmission electron microscopy images showed the Pr nanocomposite with 1% Cr to have an increased average grain size.

The use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) combined with other materials in nanostructured films has demonstrated their versatility in tailoring specific properties. In this study, we produced layer-by-layer (LbL) films of polyamidoamine-PAMAM-incorporating multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PAMAM-NT) alternated with nickel tetrasulfonated metallophthalocyanine (NiTsPc), in which the incorporation of CNTs enhanced the NiTsPc redox process and its electrocatalytic properties for detecting dopamine. Film growth was monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy, which pointed to an exponential growth of the multilayers, whose roughness increased with the number of bilayers according to atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. Strong interactions between -NH3+ terminal groups from PAMAM and -SO3- from NiTsPc were observed via infrared spectroscopy, while the micro-Raman spectra confirmed the adsorption of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the LbL film containing NiTsPc. Cyclic voltammograms presented well-defined electroactivity with a redox pair at 0.86 and 0.87 V, reversibility, a charge-transfer controlled process, and high stability up to 100 cycles. The films were employed successfully in dopamine (DA) detection, with limits of detection and quantification of 10(-7) and 10(-6) mol L-1, respectively. Furthermore, films containing immobilized CNTs could distinguish between DA and its natural interferent, ascorbic acid (AA).

The use of chemically stable PPID/NiTsPc films as gate membranes in SEGFETs, as introduced here, may represent an alternative for the fabrication of nanostructured, porous platforms for enzyme immobilization to be used in enzymatic biosensors.
