Agricultural management practices that promote net carbon (C) accumulation in the soil have been considered as an important potential mitigation option to combat global warming. The change in the sugarcane harvesting system, to one which incorporates C into the soil from crop residues, is the focus of this work. The main objective was to assess and discuss the changes in soil organic C stocks caused by the conversion of burnt to unburnt sugarcane harvesting systems in Brazil, when considering the main soils and climates associated with this crop. For this purpose, a dataset was obtained from a literature review of soils under sugarcane in Brazil. Although not necessarily from experimental studies, only paired comparisons were examined, and for each site the dominant soil type, topography and climate were similar. The results show a mean annual C accumulation rate of 1.5 Mg ha-1 year-1 for the surface to 30-cm depth (0.73 and 2.04 Mg ha-1 year-1 for sandy and clay soils, respectively) caused by the conversion from a burnt to an unburnt sugarcane harvesting system. The findings suggest that soil should be included in future studies related to life cycle assessment and C footprint of Brazilian sugarcane ethanol.

The present study had as objective to verify the production of fight, martial arts and combat sports in articles published in the main Physical Education academic journals available in Brazil after the establishment of the CONFEF, as well as analyze the subjects studied in these articles. The subject classification followed Tani (1996)`s proposition concerning an academic structure to Kinesiology, Physical Education and Sport. When considering the 2561 articles published on these journals only 75 (2.93%) were related to Fight/Martial Arts/Combat Sports. It was verified a predominance of studies conducted in the Biodynamic area (40%), followed by Human Movement Socio-cultural Studies (32%) and Motor Behavior (8%). The applied studies were divided as: Human Movement Pedagogy (10.7%), Sports Training (8%), Sports Administration (1.3%) and Adapted Human Movement (none study published). These data indicate: (1) a reduced number of publications concerning these activities, especially those of applied nature; (2) a need to promote inter and multidisciplinary research about this subject.

The discrete-time neural network proposed by Hopfield can be used for storing and recognizing binary patterns. Here, we investigate how the performance of this network on pattern recognition task is altered when neurons are removed and the weights of the synapses corresponding to these deleted neurons are divided among the remaining synapses. Five distinct ways of distributing such weights are evaluated. We speculate how this numerical work about synaptic compensation may help to guide experimental studies on memory rehabilitation interventions.

We investigated three amino derivatives of ortho-aminobenzoic or anthranilic acid (o-Abz): a) 2-Amino-benzamide (AbzNH(2)); b) 2-Amino-N-methyl-benzamide (AbzNHCH(3)) and c) 2-Amino-N-N`-dimethyl-bezamide (AbzNH(CH(3))(2)), see Scheme 1. We describe the results of ab-initio calculations on the structural characteristics of the compounds and experimental studies about solvent effects in their absorption and steady-state and time-resolved emission properties. Ab-initio calculations showed higher stability for the rotameric conformation in which the oxygen of carbonyl is near to the nitrogen of ortho-amino group. The derivatives present decrease in the delocalization of pi electron, and absorption bands are blue shifted compared to the parent compound absorption, the extent of the effect increasing from to Abz-NH(2) to Abz-NHCH(3) Abz-NH(CH(3))(2). Measurements performed in several solvents have shown that the the dependence of Stokes shift of the derivatives with the orientational polarizability follows the Onsager-Lippert model for general effects of solvent. However deviation occurred in solvents with properties of Bronsted acids, or electron acceptor characteristics, so that hydrogen bonds formed with protic solvents predominates over intramolecular hydrogen bond. In most solvents the fluorescence decay of AbzNH(2) and AbzNHCH(3) was fitted to a single exponential with lifetimes around 7.0 ns and no correlation with polarity of the solvent was observed. The fluorescence decay of AbzN(CH(3))(2) showed lifetimes around 2.0 ns, consistent with low quantum yield of the compound. The spectroscopic properties of the monoamino derivative AbzNHCH(3) are representative of the properties presented by Abz labelled peptides and fatty acids previously studied.

The mineralogy and origin of micas were investigated in incipient soils surrounding a modem alkaline-saline lake of Nhecolandia, a sub-region of Pantanal wetland. Soils were sampled along a toposequence and analyzed by XRD, TEM-EDS, and ICP-MS. The studied micas, mainly concentrated in a green horizon, are dioctahedral, strongly associated with Fe(3+) and Al, and interstratified with smectite layers. Classification of individual crystals shows that glauconite and Fe-illite are the dominant micas, but one crystal of illite was recognized. Si-rich amorphous materials are associated with small crystallites in the mica-enriched horizon. A recent study shows that water samples from the studied lake and the surrounding water table have high pH, negative Eh, temperatures up to 40 C. high concentration of K. and low concentration of Si(OH)(4). Experimental studies of micas synthesis reported in the literature show that similar water conditions allow for dioctahedral mica crystallization from initial precipitation of amorphous hydroxides. Therefore, water characteristics combined with presence of Si-rich amorphous materials in the mica-enriched horizon suggest that the micas of the study area are neoformed. The alternated origin of illite, glauconite, and Fe-illite mixed-layer minerals probably occurs due to seasonal variations of pH. temperature, and chemical composition of waters in microenvironments, since the changes at this scale are possibly faster and more extreme. Vitamin D (VD), is a steroid hormone with multiple functions in the central nervous system (CNS), producing numerous physiological effects mediated by its receptor (VDR). Clinical and experimental studies have shown a link between VD dysfunction and epilepsy. Along these lines, the purpose of our work was to analyze the relative expression of VDR mRNA in the hippocampal formation of rats during the three periods of pilocarpine-induced epilepsy. Male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: (1) control group; rats that received saline 0.9%, i.p. and were killed 7 days after its administration (CTRL, n = 8), (2) SE group; rats that received pilocarpine and were killed 4 h after SE (SE, n = 8), (3) Silent group-7 days; rats that received pilocarpine and were killed 7 days after SE (SIL 7d, n = 8), (4) Silent group-14 days; rats that received pilocarpine and were killed 14 days after SE (SIL 14d, n = 8), (5) Chronic group; rats that received pilocarpine and were killed 60 days after the first spontaneous seizure, (chronic, n = 8). The relative expression of VDR mRNA was determined by real-time PCR. Our results showed an increase of the relative expression of VDR mRNA in the SIL 7 days, SIL 14 days and Chronic groups, respectively (0.060 +/- 0.024; 0.052 +/- 0.035; 0.085 +/- 0.055) when compared with the CTRL and SE groups (0.019 +/- 0.017; 0.019 +/- 0.025). These data suggest the VDR as a possible candidate participating in the epileptogenesis process of the pilocarpine model of epilepsy. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Successful surgical treatment of deep bowel endometriosis depends on obtaining detailed information about the lesions, prior to the procedure. The objective of this study was to determine the capability of transvaginal ultrasonography with bowel preparation (TVUS-BP) to predict the presence of one or more rectosigmoid nodules and the deepest bowel layer affected by the disease. A prospective study of 194 patients with clinical and TVUS-BP suspected deep endometriosis submitted to videolaparoscopy. Image data were compared with surgical and histological results. With respect to bowel nodule detection and presence of at least two rectosigmoid lesions, TVUS-BP had a sensitivity of 97 and 81%, specificity 100 and 99%, positive predictive value (PPV) 100 and 93% and negative predictive value (NPV) 98 and 96%, respectively. Regarding diagnosis of infiltration of the submucosal/mucosal layer, TVUS-BP had a sensitivity of 83%, specificity 94%, PPV 77%, NPV 96%. These findings show that TVUS-BP is an adequate exam for evaluating the presence of one or more rectosigmoid nodules and the deepest layer affected in deep infiltrating bowel endometriosis, confirming the importance of this technique for defining the most appropriate surgical strategy to be implemented.

Follistatin is an activin-binding protein produced by several tissues, including endometrium and endometriotic implants. We aimed to quantify follistatin in patients with ovarian endometriosis and investigate its value as a diagnostic marker. Women undergoing laparoscopic excision of ovarian endometrioma (n = 52) or other benign ovarian cysts (n = 52) were studied, plus women with non-ovarian endometriosis (n = 11) and healthy controls (n = 27). Serum was collected from all subjects, and peritoneal and cystic fluid from a subset with endometrioma. Follistatin was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The diagnostic accuracy of follistatin to detect endometrioma was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and compared with cancer antigen (CA)-125. Serum follistatin was increased in women with ovarian endometrioma (2080 +/- 94 pg/ml) compared with controls (545 +/- 49 pg/ml, P < 0.001), other benign ovarian cysts (795 +/- 60 pg/ml, P < 0.001) or non-ovarian endometriosis (1271 +/- 115 pg/ml, P < 0.001). Cystic fluid showed a higher concentration of follistatin (9850 +/- 4461 pg/ml) than peritoneal fluid (1885 +/- 261 pg/ml, P < 0.001) and serum (P < 0.001). Follistatin levels detected 48/52 cases of endometrioma (92% sensitivity) at 1433 pg/ml cut-off, corresponding to 92% specificity. CA-125 detected only 44% of endometriomas with 90% specificity. ROC curve comparison showed follistatin was more accurate than CA-125 to discriminate women with endometrioma either from controls or women with other benign ovarian cysts (P < 0.0001). Serum follistatin is increased in women with endometriosis and allows clear distinction between endometrioma and other benign ovarian cysts. Follistatin has the sensitivity and specificity to become a useful clinical marker of ovarian endometrioma.

Background: Androgenic anabolic steroids (AAS) are synthetic hormone derivatives of testosterone and are mainly used to enhance athletic performance and muscle mass, but medical applications also have been described. Short- and long-term side effects have been demonstrated in many organs, but the liver adverse effects are the most common and serious ones associated with AAS use. However, these effects have been supported by few clinical and experimental studies. Objective: To evaluate the hepatic function and structure after 5 wk of nandrolone decanoate administration at three different doses. Methods: Twenty-seven adult male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to the following groups: control, clinical, intermediate, and suprapharmacological doses of nandrolone decanoate during 5 wk. Results: The biochemical studies showed that nandrolone decanoate administration leads to a dose-dependent increase in serum levels of the aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (P < 0.05), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (P < 0.01), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (P < 0.001), as well as a significant decrease in total proteins (P < 0.01), bilirubin (P < 0.05), total cholesterol and fractions (P < 0.05), and triglycerides (P < 0.05). Although a significant statistical difference was found for AST, ALT, and ALP when compared with the control group, their values remained within the normal range. The number of Kupffer cells was increased in the liver parenchyma (P < 0.05), and the content of collagen was increased in the central lobular vein wall, in the hepatic parenchyma, and in the portal space (P < 0.05). Conclusions: These results suggest that subchronic treatment with nandrolone decanoate, mainly administered at higher-than-clinical doses, are potentially deleterious to the liver, leading to incipient fibrosis.

This work characterizes the effects of ambient levels of urban particulate matter (PM(2.5)) from the city of Sao Paulo on spermatogenesis using mice exposed during the embryo-fetal and/or postnatal phases of development. Parental generations (BALB/c mice) were exposed to air pollution in chambers with or without filtering PM(2.5) for 4 months. Animals were mated, and half of the 1-day-old offspring were moved between chambers, which yielded prenatal and postnatal groups. Remaining offspring comprised the non-exposed and pre+postnatal exposed groups. After 90 days, the animals were sacrificed for testis collection and weighing. Optical microscopy was used for the morphometric analyses of the cell counts, spermatogenic cycle, proliferation, and apoptosis. Prenatally exposed animals presented reduced body and testicular weight with an increased gonadosomatic index (GSI). Testicular volume also decreased, as well as the tubular diameter in testes of the same animals. Proliferation, apoptosis, and spermatogenic cycle analyses showed no significant differences among groups. However, the tubules at stage VII of pre- and postnatal animals presented a reduced number of elongated spermatids. Pre+postnatal group presented higher spermatid head retention at stages VIII-XII. These results show that ambient levels of PM(2.5) from Sao Paulo city affect spermatogenesis by damaging sperm production.

Introduction: Extensive experimental studies and clinical evidence (Metabolic Efficiency with Ranzolazine for Less Ischemia in Non-ST-Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction-36 [MERLIN TIMI-36] trial) indicate potential antiarrhythmic efficacy of the antianginal agent ranolazine. Delivery of agents into the pericardial space allows high local concentrations to be maintained in close proximity to myocardial tissue while systemic effects are minimized. Methods and Results: The effects of intrapericardial (IPC) administration of ranolazine (50-mg bolus) on right atrial and right ventricular effective refractory periods (ERP), atrial fibrillation threshold, and ventricular fibrillation threshold were determined in 17 closed-chest anesthetized pigs. IPC ranolazine increased atrial ERP in a time-dependent manner from 129 +/- 5.14 to 186 +/- 9.78 ms (P < 0.01, N = 7) but did not significantly affect ventricular ERP (from 188.3 +/- 4.6 to 201 +/- 4.3 ms (NS, N = 6). IPC ranolazine increased atrial fibrillation threshold from 4.8 +/- 0.8 to 28 +/- 2.3 mA (P < 0.03, N = 6) and ventricular fibrillation threshold (from 24 +/- 3.56 baseline to 29.33 +/- 2.04 mA at 10-20 minutes, P < 0.03, N = 6). No significant change in mean arterial pressure was observed (from 92.8 +/- 7.1 to 74.8 +/- 7.5 mm Hg, P < 0.125, N = 5, at 7 minutes). Conclusions: IPC ranolazine exhibits striking atrial antiarrhythmic actions as evidenced by increases in refractoriness and in fibrillation inducibility without significantly altering mean arterial blood pressure. Ranolazine`s effects on the atria appear to be more potent than those on the ventricles.

Studies that have investigated ascorbic acid (AA) concentrations in cord blood have pointed to significant associations with maternal blood AA concentrations. smoking, age, diet, type of delivery, duration of gestation, fetal distress and birth weight. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between cord blood AA concentrations in newborns and maternal characteristics. A total of 117 Brazilian healthy parturients were included in this cross-sectional study. The concentrations of AA in blood were determined by the HPLC method. Data concerning socio-economic, demographic, obstetric, nutritional and health characteristics of the parturients, including alcohol consumption and smoking habit, were assessed by a standardised questionnaire. A FFQ was used to investigate the intake of foods rich in vitamin C. Cord blood AA concentration was significantly correlated with per capita income (r 0.26; P=0.005), maternal blood AA concentration (r 0.48; P<0.001) and maternal vitamin C-rich food intake score (r 0.36; P<0.001). The linear regression model including maternal AA concentration, alcohol consumption, smoking, parity, vitamin C-rich food intake score and per capita income explained 31.13% of the variation in cord blood AA concentrations in newborns. We recommend further experimental studies to assess the effects of ethanol on placental AA uptake, and epidemiological cohort studies to evaluate in detail the influence of maternal alcohol consumption on cord blood AA concentrations.

Sepsis is the systemic inflammatory response syndrome secondary to a local infection. Septic shock, the severe complication of sepsis associated with refractory hypotension, is frequently a near-fatal condition requiring prompt diagnosis and management. Although the recent years have been associated with considerable improvements in the knowledge of the pathophysiology of the disease and remarkable advances have been achieved in sepsis treatment, the morbidity and mortality of this disease are still unacceptably high. In this review, we will briefly discuss the ongoing standard treatment of septic shock and describe novel potential therapies, aiming to improve hemodynamic support and/or control inflammatory response in sepsis. These therapies were associated with benefits in experimental studies and have been tested or are currently under testing in randomized controlled studies with septic patients.

OBJECTIVES This study aimed at analyzing the association between myocardial perfusion changes and the progression of left ventricular systolic dysfunction in patients with chronic Chagas` cardiomyopathy (CCC). BACKGROUND Pathological and experimental studies have suggested that coronary microvascular derangement, and consequent myocardial perfusion disturbance, may cause myocardial damage in CCC. METHODS Patients with CCC (n = 36, ages 57 +/- 10 years, 17 males), previously having undergone myocardial perfusion single-positron emission computed tomography and 2-dimensional echocardiography, prospectively underwent a new evaluation after an interval of 5.6 +/- 1.5 years. Stress and rest myocardial perfusion defects were quantified using polar maps and normal database comparison. RESULTS Between the first and final evaluations, a significant reduction of left ventricular ejection fraction was observed (55 +/- 11% and 50 +/- 13%, respectively; p = 0.0001), as well as an increase in the area of the perfusion defect at rest (18.8 +/- 14.1% and 26.5 +/- 19.1%, respectively; p = 0.0075). The individual increase in the perfusion defect area at rest was significantly correlated with the reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction (R = 0.4211, p = 0.0105). Twenty patients with normal coronary arteries (56%) showed reversible perfusion defects involving 10.2 +/- 9.7% of the left ventricle. A significant topographic correlation was found between reversible defects and the appearance of new rest perfusion defects at the final evaluation. Of the 47 segments presenting reversible perfusion defects in the initial study, 32 (68%) progressed to perfusion defects at rest, and of the 469 segments not showing reversibility in the initial study, only 41 (8.7%) had the same progression (p < 0.0001, Fisher exact test). CONCLUSIONS In CCC patients, the progression of left ventricular systolic dysfunction was associated with both the presence of reversible perfusion defects and the increase in perfusion defects at rest. These results support the notion that myocardial perfusion disturbances participate in the pathogenesis of myocardial injury in CCC. Pre-eclampsia (PE) is associated with decreased nitric oxide (NO) formation. However, no previous study has examined whether genetic variations in the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) affect this alteration. We hypothesized that PE decreases NO formation depending on eNOS polymorphisms. We examined how three eNOS polymorphisms [T-786C, rs2070744; Glu298Asp, rs1799983; 27 bp variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) in intron 4] affect plasma nitrite concentrations in 205 pregnant women [107 healthy pregnant (HP) and 98 PE]. Genotypes were determined and eNOS haplotypes were inferred using the PHASE 2.1 program. The plasma nitrite concentrations were determined using an ozone-based chemiluminescence assay. The Glu298Asp polymorphism had no effects on the plasma nitrite concentrations. Higher nitrite levels were found in HP women with the CC versus TT genotype for the T-786C polymorphism (277.9 +/- 19.5 versus 140.6 +/- 8.2 nM; P < 0.05). Lower nitrite levels were found in healthy women with the 4a4a versus 4b4b genotype for the VNTR polymorphism (95.1 +/- 3.3 versus 216.1 +/- 16.8 nM; P < 0.05). No effects of genotypes were found in PE women (all P > 0.05). The `C Glu b` haplotype was more frequent in the HP group than in the PE group (20 versus 5; P = 0.0044). This haplotype was associated with higher nitrite concentrations than the other haplotypes in healthy pregnancies (P < 0.05). No differences in nitrite concentrations were found among PE women with different eNOS haplotypes (P > 0.05). These findings indicate that eNOS polymorphisms affect endogenous NO formation in normal pregnancy, but not in PE, and that the `C Glu b` haplotype may protect against the development of PE by increasing endogenous NO formation.
