This study had the following objectives: to induce and describe symptoms of deficiency of boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo) and zinc (Zn), determining the effect on the mineral composition of leaves. The experiment was developed in a green house and used diagnosis technique by subtraction. The experimental design usedn was a randomized blocks, with seven treatments and three replicates. It was verified that micronutrient omission led to morphological alterations which, in turn, caused visual symptoms. The symptoms caused by the omission of Cu, Mn and Zn were the first to appear, and were followed by those of B, Fe and Mo. The omission of B, Mn and Zn was responsible for the more pronounced reduction in height and stem diameter.

Some antimicrobial peptides have a broad spectrum of action against many different kinds of microorganisms. Gomesin and protegrin-1 are examples of such antimicrobial peptides, and they were studied by molecular dynamics in this research. Both have a beta-hairpin conformation stabilized by two disulfide bridges and are active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi. In this study, the role of the disulfide bridge in the maintenance of the tertiary peptide structure of protegrin-1 and gomesin is analyzed by the structural characteristics of these peptides and two of their respective variants, gomy4 and proty4, in which the four cysteines are replaced by four tyrosine residues. The absence of disulfide bridges in gomy4 and proty4 is compensated by overall reinforcement of the original hydrogen bonds and extra attractive interactions between the aromatic rings of the tyrosine residues. The net effects on the variants with respect to the corresponding natural peptides are: i) maintenance of the original beta-hairpin conformation, with great structural similarities between the mutant and the corresponding natural peptide; ii) combination of positive F and. Ramachandran angles within the hairpin head region with a qualitative change to a combination of positive (F) and negative (.) angles, and iii) significant increase in structural flexibility. Experimental facts about the antimicrobial activity of the gomesin and protegrin-1 variants have also been established here, in the hope that the detailed data provided in the present study may be useful for understanding the mechanism of action of these peptides.

We developed a method for rearing larvae of Africanized bees under laboratory conditions to determine the amount of diet needed during larval development to obtain a worker bee. We started with larvae 18-24 h old, which were transferred to polyethylene cell cups and fed for five days. We found that the amount of diet needed for successful larval development was: 4, 15, 25, 50, and 70 mu L during the first to fifth days, respectively. The survival rate to the adult stage was 88.6% when the larvae received the daily amount of diet divided into two feedings, and 80% when they received only one feeding per day. The adult weight obtained in the laboratory, when the larvae received the daily amount of diet in a single dose, did not differ from those that were developed under field conditions (our control). All adults that we obtained in laboratory appeared to be normal. This technique has the potential to facilitate studies on brood pathogens, resistance mechanisms to diseases and also might be useful to test the impacts of transgenic products on honey bee brood.

This article presents and analyses some aspects of Georges Perec's composition as shown in his book Life: a user's manual (1978). Starting with the image of a ""book-library"", composed by some of Perec's literary 'models', and discussing the theory of intextertuality and rewriting, we propose to analyse some possible approximations between Perec and Flaubert, especially in the latter's Bouvard and Pecuchet (1881).

Background: It is recognized that the growing epidemic of metabolic syndrome is related to dietary and lifestyle changes. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate short-term application of nutritional counseling in women with metabolic syndrome. Methods: This follow-up study was conducted from September to November 2008 with thirty three women >= 35 years old screened clinically for nutritional counseling. Dietary intake was reported, and biochemical and body composition measures were taken at baseline and after three months of follow-up. Results: Of the 33 women evaluated, 29 patients completed the study. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity was high at 38%, 72.4%, 55.2%, and 75.8%, respectively. At the end of three-months of follow-up, a significant decline in body mass index, waist circumference, triceps skinfold, and triglycerides was observed, as was an increase in calcium and vitamin D intake. The multiple regression analysis showed that changes in body mass index, triceps skinfold, waist circumference and triglyceride levels after nutritional intervention were positively associated with changes in anthropometric (loss of body weight) and biochemical (decrease of TG/HDL-c ratio) parameters. Moreover, waist circumference changes were negatively associated with changes in calcium and vitamin D intake. Conclusion: Short-term nutritional counseling improved some factors of metabolic syndrome. Moreover, the increases in calcium and vitamin D consumption can be associated with the improvement in markers of metabolic syndrome.

Objective: The aims of the present study were to investigate the effect of low-intensity laser irradiation on the total number of mast cells as well as the percentage of degranulation in human gingiva. Blood vessel dilation was also evaluated. Background Data: It has been proposed that low-intensity laser irradiation can ameliorate pain, swelling, and inflammation. In periodontal tissue, mast cells may influence either the destructive events or the defense mechanism against periodontal disease via secretion of cytokines and through cellular migration to improve the healing process. Mast cells play an important role in the inflammatory process. Methods: Twenty patients with gingival enlargement indicated for gingivectomy were selected. Gingival fragments were obtained from each patient and divided into three different groups before surgery. One fragment was removed without any irradiation. The two others were submitted to punctual irradiation with an energy density of 8 J/cm(2) at an output power of 50 mW at 36 Hz for 36 sec before gingivectomy. Nondegranulated and degranulated mast cells were counted in five areas of the gingival fragment connective tissue. Major and minor diameters of the blood vessels were also measured. Results: Both red and infrared radiation promoted a significant increase in mast cell degranulation compared to controls; however, no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed between the irradiated groups. No significant differences among the groups were observed regarding blood vessel size. Conclusion: The results suggests that red and infrared wavelengths promote mast cell degranulation in human gingival tissue, although no dilation of blood vessels was observed. The effects of premature degranulation of mast cells in human tissue and the laser radiation protocol applied in this study encourage further investigations to extend these results into clinical practice.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the osteogenic potential of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and low-level laser irradiation (LLLI), isolated or combined in critical bone defects (5mm) in parietal bone using ovariectomized female rats as an experimental animal model. Materials and Methods: Forty-nine female Wistar rats, bilaterally ovariectomized (OVX), were divided into seven treatment groups of seven animals each: (I) laser in a single application, (II) 7 mu g of pure rhBMP-2, (III) laser and 7 mu g of pure rhBMP-2, (IV) 7 mu g of rhBMP-2/monoolein gel, (V) laser and 7 mu g of rhBMP-2/monoolein gel, (VI) laser and pure monoolein gel, and (VII) critical bone defect controls. The low-level laser source used was a gallium aluminum arsenide semiconductor diode laser device (lambda = 780 nm, D = 120 J/cm(2)). Results: Groups II and III presented higher levels of newly formed bone than all other groups with levels of 40.57% and 40.39%, respectively (p < 0.05). The levels of newly formed bone of groups I, IV, V, and VI were similar with levels of 29.67%, 25.75%, 27.75%, and 30.64%, respectively (p > 0.05). The area of new bone formation in group VII was 20.96%, which is significantly lower than groups I, II, III, and VI. Conclusions: It was concluded that pure rhBMP-2 and a single dose of laser application stimulated new bone formation, but the new bone formation area was significantly increased when only rhBMP-2 was used. Additionally, the laser application in combination with other treatments did not influence the bone formation area.

Objective: This study evaluated ultra-structural dentine changes at the apical stop after CO(2) laser irradiation used during biomechanical preparation. Background: Most studies evaluating the sealing efficiency of CO(2) lasers have been carried out after apical root canal resections and retro-filling procedures. Methods: Sixty human canines were prepared with #1 to #6 Largo burs. The apical stops were established at 1 mm (n = 30) and 2 mm (n = 30) from the apex. Final irrigation was performed with 1% NaOCl and 15% EDTA followed by 20 ml of distilled and deionized water. Specimens were subdivided into three subgroups (n = 10 for each stop distance): GI-no radiation (n = 20); GII-3W potency (n = 20), GIII-5W potency (n = 20). After preparation, specimens were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, with ultra-structural changes classified according to a scoring system based on six qualitatively different outcomes. Results: Statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney test confirmed more intense results for the specimens irradiated at 5 W potency than at 3 W (p<0.0001). The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that when using the same potencies (3 or 5 W) at 1 and 2 mm from the apex, there were no statistically significant differences in ultra-structural changes. Conclusions: Our results showed that ultra-structural changes ranged from smear layer removal to dentine fusion. As laser potency was increased from 3 to 5 W, ultra-structural changes included extensive fused lava-like areas sealing the apical foramen.

Objective: To evaluate the adhesion of the endodontic sealers Epiphany, Apexit Plus, and AH Plus to root canal dentin submitted to different surface treatments, by using the push-out test. Methods: One hundred twenty-eight root cylinders obtained from maxillary canines were embedded in acrylic resin, had the canals prepared, and were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 32), according to root dentin treatment: (I) distilled water (control), (II) 17% EDTAC, (III) 1% NaOCl and (IV) Er:YAG laser with 16-Hz, 400-mJ input (240-mJ output) and 0.32-J/cm(2) energy density. Each group was divided into four subgroups (n = 8) filled with Epiphany (either dispensed from the automix syringe supplied by the manufacturer or prepared by hand mixing), Apexit Plus, or AH Plus. Data (MPa) were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test. Results: A statistically significant difference (p < 0.01) was found among the root-canal sealers, except for the Epiphany subgroups, which had statistically similar results to each other (p > 0.01): AH Plus (4.77 +/- 0.85), Epiphany/hand mixed (3.06 +/- 1.34), Epiphany/automix syringe (2.68 +/- 1.35), and Apexit Plus (1.22 +/- 0.33). A significant difference (p < 0.01) was found among the dentin surface treatments. The highest adhesion values were obtained with AH Plus when root dentin was treated with Er: YAG laser and 17% EDTAC. Epiphany sealer presented the lowest adhesion values to root dentin treated with 17% EDTAC. Conclusions: The resin-based sealers had different adhesive behaviors, depending on the treatment of root canal walls. The mode of preparation of Epiphany (automix syringe or hand mixing) did not influence sealer adhesion to root dentin.

Objective: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) the ultrastructural morphological changes of the radicular dentine surface after irradiation with 980-nm diode laser energy at different parameters and angles of incidence. Background Data: There have been limited reports on the effects of diode laser irradiation at 980 nm on radicular dentin morphology. Materials and Methods: Seventy-two maxillary canines were sectioned and roots were biomechanically prepared using K3 rotary instruments. The teeth were irrigated with 2 mL of distilled water between files and final irrigation was performed with 10 mL of distilled water. The teeth were then randomly divided into five groups (n = 8 each) according to their diode laser parameters: Group 1: no irradiation (control); group 2: 1.5 W/continuous wave (CW) emission (the manufacturer's parameters); group 3: 1.5 W/100 Hz; group 4: 3 W/CW; and group 5: 3 W/100 Hz. Laser energy was applied with helicoid movements (parallel to the canal walls) for 20 sec. Eight additional teeth for each group were endodontically prepared and split longitudinally and irradiation was applied perpendicularly to the root surface. Results: Statistical analysis showed no difference between the root canal thirds irradiated with the 980-nm diode laser, and similar results between the parameters 1.5 W/CW and 3 W/100 Hz (p > 0.05). Conclusion: When considering different output powers and delivery modes our results showed that changes varied from smear layer removal to dentine fusion.
