AO= 1,22± 19,38m/s; V. Me. AO= 0,72± 0,08m/s; VTI AO= 0,14± 0,02m; TA AO= 38,80± 11,29ms; TE AO= 197,90± 24,77ms; V. Max. Pul= 0,95± 0,18m/s; V. Me. Pul= 0,63± 0,10m/s; VTI Pul= 0,13± 0,02m; TA Pul= 70,97± 18,87ms; TE Pul= 203,70± 28,98ms. AO e V. Me. AO maiores que V. Max. Pul. e V. Me. Pul., respectivamente, VTI AO maior que VTI Pul, e TA AO menor que TA Pul.

Doppler images in Balmer, He I, He II and C II lines, and simultaneous I-band photometry of the polar MR Ser are presented and analyzed. The Balmer and Helium Doppler tomograms, of this bright polar at high mass transfer state show the emission from the accretion flow and the heated surface of the companion star. As a result of a comparison between the Doppler tomograms, the ionization structure of the flow could be constrained. The highest ionization region was found in the vicinity of the magnetospheric radius. Photoionization modeling of the accretion column indicates that the Balmer and Helium emission line production in this system can be explained only by the central soft X-ray illumination. The orbital ephemeris of MR Ser has been revised.

It is possible that a system composed of up, down, and strange quarks exists as the true ground state of nuclear matter at high densities and low temperatures. This exotic plasma, called strange quark matter (SQM), seems to be even more favorable energetically if quarks are in a superconducting state, the so-called color-flavor locked state. Here we present calculations made on the basis of the MIT bag model, considering the influence of finite temperature on the allowed parameters characterizing the system for stability of bulk SQM (the so-called stability windows) and also for strangelets, small lumps of SQM, both in the color-flavor locking scenario. We compare these results with the unpaired SQM and also briefly discuss some astrophysical implications of them. Also, the issue of the strangelet's electric charge is discussed. The effects of dynamical screening, though important for nonpaired SQM strangelets, are not relevant when considering pairing among all three flavors and colors of quarks.

Using the solutions of the gap equations of the magnetic-color-flavor-locked (MCFL) phase of paired quark matter in a magnetic field, and taking into consideration the separation between the longitudinal and transverse pressures due to the field-induced breaking of the spatial rotational symmetry, the equation of state of the MCFL phase is self-consistently determined. This result is then used to investigate the possibility of absolute stability, which turns out to require a field-dependent ""bag constant"" to hold. That is, only if the bag constant varies with the magnetic field, there exists a window in the magnetic field vs bag constant plane for absolute stability of strange matter. Implications for stellar models of magnetized (self-bound) strange stars and hybrid (MCFL core) stars are calculated and discussed.

Template matching is a technique widely used for finding patterns in digital images. A good template matching should be able to detect template instances that have undergone geometric transformations. In this paper, we proposed a grayscale template matching algorithm named Ciratefi, invariant to rotation, scale, translation, brightness and contrast and its extension to color images. We introduce CSSIM (color structural similarity) for comparing the similarity of two color image patches and use it in our algorithm. We also describe a scheme to determine automatically the appropriate parameters of our algorithm and use pyramidal structure to improve the scale invariance. We conducted several experiments to compare grayscale and color Ciratefis with SIFT, C-color-SIFT and EasyMatch algorithms in many different situations. The results attest that grayscale and color Ciratefis are more accurate than the compared algorithms and that color-Ciratefi outperforms grayscale Ciratefi most of the time. However, Ciratefi is slower than the other algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown that beer has positive effects on inhibiting atherosclerosis, decreasing the content of serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, by acting as in vivo free radical scavenger. In this research, the antioxidant activity of commercial Brazilian beers (n = 29) was determined by the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and 1,1 -diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH(center dot)) assays and results were analyzed by chemometrics. RESULTS: The brown ale samples (n = 11) presented higher (P < 0.05) flavonoids (124.01 mg L(-1)), total phenolics (362.22 mg L(-1)), non-flavonoid phenolics (238.21 mg L(-1)), lightness (69.48), redness (35.75), yellowness (55.71), color intensity (66.86), hue angle (59.14), color saturation (0.9620), DPPH(center dot) values (30.96% inhibition), and ORAC values (3,659.36 mu mol Trolox equivalents L(-1)), compared to lager samples (n = 18). Brown ale beers presented higher antioxidant properties (P < 0.05) measured by ORAC (1.93 times higher) and DPPH (1.65 times higher) compared to lager beer. ORAC values correlated well with the content of flavonoids (r = 0.47; P = 0.01), total phenolic compounds (r = 0.44; P < 0.01) and DPPH (r = 0.67; P < 0.01). DPPH values also correlated well to the content of flavonoids (r = 0.69; P < 0.01), total phenolic compounds (r = 0.60; P < 0.01), and non-flavonoid compounds (r = 0.46; P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that brown ale beers, and less significantly lager beers, could be sources of bioactive compounds with suitable free radical scavenging properties. Objective: To evaluate the impact of systematic use of intraoperative Doppler ultrasound during microsurgical subinguinal varicocele repair. Design: Prospective clinical study. Setting: Andrology laboratory and male infertility section of the urology department of a tertiary care hospital. Patient(s): Two hundred and thirteen men with clinical varicocele. Intervention(s): Subinguinal microsurgical varicocele ligation using an intraoperative vascular Doppler flow detector. Main Outcome Measure(s): Number of veins ligated, lymphatic spared, arteries identified or accidentally ligated. Result(s): A statistically significant greater number of arteries were identified and preserved when intraoperative vascular Doppler was used. In addition, the average number of internal spermatic veins ligated was statistically significantly greater in the same group. Accidental artery ligation occurred in two cases (1.1%) in which the Doppler was not applied. There was no statistically significant difference in number of lymphatics spared between groups. Conclusion(s): Our findings showed that concomitant use of intraoperative vascular Doppler during microsurgical varicocelectomy allows more arterial branches to be preserved, and more internal spermatic veins are likely to be ligated. This device should be considered an attractive tool to improve surgical outcomes and safety. (Fertil Steril (R) 2010; 93: 2396-9. (C)2010 by American Society for Reproductive Medicine.)

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between ductus venosus (DV) Doppler velocimetry and fetal cardiac troponin T (cTnT). Study design: Between March 2007 and March 2008, 89 high-risk pregnancies were prospectively studied. All patients delivered by cesarean section and the Doppler exams were performed on the same day. Multiple regression included the following variables: maternial age, parity, hypertension, diabetes, gestational age at delivery, umbilical artery (UA) S/D ratio, diagnosis of absent or reversed end-diastolic flow velocity (AREDV) in the UA, middle cerebral artery (MCA) pulsatility index (131), and DV pulsatility index for veins (PIV). Immediately after delivery, UA blood samples were obtained for the measurement of pH and cTnT levels. Statistical analysis included the Kruskal-Wallis test and multiple regressions. Results: The results showed a cTnT concentration at birth >0.05 ng/ml in nine (81.8%) of AREDV cases, a proportion significantly higher than that observed in normal UA S/D ratio and UA S/D ratio >p95 with positive diastolic blood flow (7.7 and 23.1%, respectively, p < 0.001). A positive correlation Was found between abnormal DV-PIV and elevated cTnT levels in the UA. Multiple regression identified DV-PIV and a diagnosis of AREDV as independent factors associated with abnormal fetal cTnT levels (p < 0.0001, F(2.86) = 63.5, R = 0.7722). Conclusion: DV-PIV was significantly correlated with fetal cTnT concentrations at delivery. AREDV and abnormal DV flow represent severe cardiac compromise, with increased systemic venous pressure, and a rise in right ventricular afterload, demonstrated by myocardial damage and elevated fetal cTnT. To evaluate the usefulness of intraoral ultrasonography (IOUS) as a tool for predicting neck metastasis. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue is aggressive and has a great propensity to metastasize to cervical lymph nodes. SCC of the oral cavity has a worse prognosis when associated with metastatic cervical nodes. Therefore, the metastatic potential of tongue carcinoma should be graded preoperatively to help determine the requirement for neck dissection. Nineteen patients (11 men, 8 women) between 36 and 79 years of age (mean age 60) with T1 to T4a TNM-stage tongue carcinomas were evaluated preoperatively with IOUS. Clinical and pathological TNM classifications were performed. The average tumor thicknesses measured using histological sections were significantly (p < 0.01) lower than those with IOUS (1.3 vs. 1.6 cm, respectively). A significant correlation was observed between the tumor thickness measured using ultrasonography and that measured using histological sections (pathology). Based on this greater accuracy, the cutoff point of tumor thickness based on IOUS evaluation for predicting neck metastasis was determined to be 1.8 cm. Some factors may influence neck metastasis. A knowledge of these would help to avoid unnecessary surgical intervention for N0 patients. The results of this study indicates that there is a significant correlation between neck metastasis and tumor thickness. Intraoral ultrasonography is useful tool for identifying tongue tumors and measuring their thickness, with the thickness measured by IOUS showing a very good correlation with histological measurements. Moreover, IOUS provides prognostic information prior to surgical treatment since tumor thickness can predict the chance of recognizing metastatic cervical nodes.

PURPOSE: To report a series of patients with symptomatic internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion treated with angioplasty and stents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From a consecutive series of 50 patients experiencing neurologic ischemic symptoms and shown by conventional ultrasonography (US) to have a total ICA occlusion, 16 patients (ages 45-79 years; mean, 63 y; 10 men) were selected between August 2006 to September 2008 to be treated with angioplasty based on discovery of an open ICA distal to the occlusion through contrast-enhanced echo Doppler imaging and/or multislice contrast computed tomography (CT). Angioplasty and stent placement were performed under cerebral protection. Follow-up duplex imaging was performed at 14 days and 3 months and every 6 months thereafter and CT follow-up was performed at 2-9 months; the mean follow-up period was 9.9 months. RESULTS: Lesion crossing and stent placement was successful in 13 of 16 patients. There were no deaths, conversions, cardiac complications, or major strokes. One patient had a transient mild hemiparesis in the upper limb, with total recovery in 3 months. At follow-up, all 13 patients with a good initial result remained with patent arterial lumens and resolution of neurologic ischemic symptoms. After 2-9 months, ICAs with a ""string sign"" had calibers close or equal to those of normal arteries. CONCLUSIONS: Angioplasty with stent placement is an effective treatment with a low morbidity rate for selected patients who continue to experience neurologic ischemic symptoms despite US findings of total occlusion of the ICA.

To determine reference values for tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and pulsed Doppler echocardiography for left ventricular diastolic function analysis in a healthy Brazilian adult population. Observations were based on a randomly selected healthy population from the city of Vitoria, Espirito Santo, Brazil. Healthy volunteers (n = 275, 61.7% women) without prior histories of cardiovascular disease underwent transthoracic echocardiography. We analyzed 175 individuals by TDI and evaluated mitral annulus E`- and A`-waves from the septum (S) and lateral wall (L) to calculate E`/A` ratios. Using pulsed Doppler echocardiography, we further analyzed the mitral E- and A-waves, E/A ratios, isovolumetric relaxation times (IRTs), and deceleration times (DTs) of 275 individuals. Pulsed Doppler mitral inflow mean values for men were as follows: E-wave: 71 +/- 16 cm/sec, A-wave: 68 +/- 15 cm/sec, IRT: 74.8 +/- 9.2 ms, DT: 206 +/- 32.3 ms, E/A ratio: 1.1 +/- 0.3. Pulsed Doppler mitral inflow mean values for women were as follows: E-wave: 76 +/- 17, A-wave: 69 +/- 14 cm/sec, IRT: 71.2 +/- 10.5 ms, DT: 197 +/- 33.3 ms, E/A ratio: 1.1 +/- 0.3. IRT and DT values were higher in men than in women (P = 0.04 and P = 0.007, respectively). TDI values in men were as follows: E`S: 11 +/- 3 cm/sec, A`S: 13 +/- 2 cm/sec, E`S/A`S: 0.89 +/- 0.2, E`L: 14 +/- 3 cm/sec, A`L: 14 +/- 2 cm/sec, E`L/A`L: 1.1 +/- 0.4. E-wave/ E`S ratio: 6.9 +/- 2.2; E-wave / E`L ratio: 4.9 +/- 1.7. In this study, we determined pulsed Doppler and TDI derived parameters for left ventricular diastolic function in a large sample of healthy Brazilian adults. (Echocardiography 2010;27:777-782).

Background: Placental insufficiency and fetal growth restriction may lead to fetal hypoxia and acidemia, which result in fetal cardiac injury. Objective: The goal of this study was to compare the levels of fetal cardiac troponin T (cTnT) at birth and fetal Doppler parameters according to fetal gender in pregnancies complicated by placental insufficiency before 34 weeks` gestation. Methods: Between March 2007 and November 2010, singleton pregnancies with placental insufficiency characterized by abnormal umbilical artery Doppler results were prospectively studied. All the patients delivered by cesarean section, and Doppler examinations were performed up to 48 hours before birth. Immediately after delivery, umbilical artery blood samples were obtained for fetal cTnT measurements. Results: Fifty high-risk pregnant women met the study criteria. The study groups were as follows: group 1 consisted of 23 male fetuses (46%) and group 2 consisted of 27 female fetuses (54%). cTnT levels were significantly higher in the group of male fetuses (median, 0.14; range, 0.01-0.85) compared with the group of female fetuses (median, 0.05; range, 0.01-0.27) (P = 0.039). In the group of male fetuses, Doppler results of the ductus venosus assessment revealed values of pulsatility index for veins >= 1.0 in 15 male fetuses (65.2%) and 9 female fetuses (33.3%) (P = 0.032). Conclusions: Fetal gender was associated with cTnT level at birth in pregnancies complicated by placental insufficiency before 34 weeks` gestation, although the Doppler findings did not support gender differences. The fetal cardiac compromise and cardiac injury may be influenced by fetal gender, suggesting differences in the cardiovascular response to fetal hypoxia. Successful surgical treatment of deep bowel endometriosis depends on obtaining detailed information about the lesions, prior to the procedure. The objective of this study was to determine the capability of transvaginal ultrasonography with bowel preparation (TVUS-BP) to predict the presence of one or more rectosigmoid nodules and the deepest bowel layer affected by the disease. A prospective study of 194 patients with clinical and TVUS-BP suspected deep endometriosis submitted to videolaparoscopy. Image data were compared with surgical and histological results. With respect to bowel nodule detection and presence of at least two rectosigmoid lesions, TVUS-BP had a sensitivity of 97 and 81%, specificity 100 and 99%, positive predictive value (PPV) 100 and 93% and negative predictive value (NPV) 98 and 96%, respectively. Regarding diagnosis of infiltration of the submucosal/mucosal layer, TVUS-BP had a sensitivity of 83%, specificity 94%, PPV 77%, NPV 96%. These findings show that TVUS-BP is an adequate exam for evaluating the presence of one or more rectosigmoid nodules and the deepest layer affected in deep infiltrating bowel endometriosis, confirming the importance of this technique for defining the most appropriate surgical strategy to be implemented.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between ductus venosus Doppler findings on the day of delivery and postnatal outcomes in pregnancies with absent or reversed end-diastolic (ARED) flow in the umbilical arteries. Study design: Postnatal outcomes of 103 newborns of pregnancies with a diagnosis of ARED flow on Doppler velocimetry of the umbilical arteries were analyzed retrospectively between January 1997 and December 2004. Single pregnancies and fetuses without malformations were included. The cases were divided into two groups according to the flow during atrial contraction (a-wave) in the ductus venosus on the day of delivery: group A, 20 cases with absent or reversed flow in the ductus venosus and group B, 83 cases with positive flow. The results were analyzed statistically using the chi-square test, Fisher`s exact test and the Mann-Whitney U test with the level of significance set at 5%. Results: All newborns were delivered by cesarean section. Gestational age was similar in the two groups (group A: 30 weeks and group B: 30.9 weeks, P = 0.23). Absent or reversed ductus venosus flow was associated with the following adverse postnatal outcomes: lower birthweight (P < 0.001), lower Apgar scores in the first (P = 0.001) and fifth minute (P = 0.001), a higher frequency of orotracheal intubation (P = 0.001) and pH at birth less than 7.20 (P < 0.001), pulmonary hemorrhage (P = 0.03), thrombocytopenia (P = 0.02), hypoglycemia (P = 0.01), intracranial hemorrhage (P = 0.02), and postnatal death (P = 0.007). Conclusion: The study of ductus venosus flow may provide additional information regarding the best time for interruption of pregnancies with ARED flow in the umbilical arteries characterized by extreme prematurity. Objective. The purpose of this study was to construct nomograms of placental volumes according to gestational age and estimated fetal weight. Methods. From March to November 2007, placental volumes were prospectively measured by ultrasonography in 295 normal pregnancies from 12 to 40 weeks` gestation and correlated with gestational age and estimated fetal weight. Inclusion criteria were healthy women, singleton pregnancies with normal fetal morphologic characteristics on ultrasonography, and confirmed gestational age by first-trimester ultrasonography. Results. The mean placental volume ranged from 83 cm(3) at 12 weeks to 427.7 cm(3) at 40 weeks. Linear regression yielded the following formula for the expected placental volumes (ePV) according to gestational age (GA): ePV` (cm(3)) = -64.68 + 12.31 x GA (r = 0.572; P < .001). Placental volumes also varied according to estimated fetal weight (EFW), and the following mathematical equation was also obtained by linear regression: ePV = 94.19 + 0.09 x EFW (r = 0.505; P < 0.001). Conclusions. Nomograms of placental volumes according to gestational age and estimated fetal weight were constructed, generating reference values.
