Aging leads to changes in cardiac structure and function. Evidence suggests that the practice of regular exercise may prevent disturbances in the cardiovascular system during aging. We studied the effects of aging on the morphology and morphometry of cardiac neurons in Wistar rats and investigated whether a lifelong moderate exercise program could exert a protective effect toward some deleterious effects of aging. Aging caused a significant decline (28%) in the number of NADH-diaphorase-stained cardiac Animals submitted to a daily session of 60 min, 5 day/week, at 1.1 km/h of running in treadmill over the entire life span exhibited a reversion of the observed decline in the number of cardiac neurons. However, most interesting was that the introduction of this lifelong exercise protocol dramatically altered the sizes of cardiac neurons. There was a notable increase in the percentage of small neurons in the rats of the exercise group compared to the sedentary animals. This is the first time that a protective effect of lifelong regular aerobic exercise has been demonstrated on the deleterious effects of aging in cardiac neurons. (C) 2009 Elsevier GmbH. Our aim was to investigate the immediate effects of bilateral, 830 nm, low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on high-intensity exercise and biochemical markers of skeletal muscle recovery, in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial set in a sports physiotherapy clinic. Twenty male athletes (nine professional volleyball players and eleven adolescent soccer players) participated. Active LLLT (830 nm wavelength, 100 mW, spot size 0.0028 cm(2), 3-4 J per point) or an identical placebo LLLT was delivered to five points in the rectus femoris muscle (bilaterally). The main outcome measures were the work performed in the Wingate test: 30 s of maximum cycling with a load of 7.5% of body weight, and the measurement of blood lactate (BL) and creatine kinase (CK) levels before and after exercise. There was no significant difference in the work performed during the Wingate test (P > 0.05) between subjects given active LLLT and those given placebo LLLT. For volleyball athletes, the change in CK levels from before to after the exercise test was significantly lower (P = 0.0133) for those given active LLLT (2.52 U l(-1) +/- 7.04 U l(-1)) than for those given placebo LLLT (28.49 U l(-1) +/- 22.62 U l(-1)). For the soccer athletes, the change in blood lactate levels from before exercise to 15 min after exercise was significantly lower (P < 0.01) in the group subjected to active LLLT (8.55 mmol l(-1) +/- 2.14 mmol l(-1)) than in the group subjected to placebo LLLT (10.52 mmol l(-1) +/- 1.82 mmol l(-1)). LLLT irradiation before the Wingate test seemed to inhibit an expected post-exercise increase in CK level and to accelerate post-exercise lactate removal without affecting test performance. These findings suggest that LLLT may be of benefit in accelerating post-exercise recovery.

Background and Objectives: There are some indications that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) may delay the development of skeletal muscle fatigue during high-intensity exercise. There have also been claims that LED cluster probes may be effective for this application however there are differences between LED and laser sources like spot size, spectral width, power output, etc. In this study we wanted to test if light emitting diode therapy (LEDT) can alter muscle performance, fatigue development and biochemical markers for skeletal muscle recovery in an experimental model of biceps humeri muscle contractions. Study Design/Materials and Methods: Ten male professional volleyball players (23.6 [SD +/- 5.6] years old) entered a randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled crossover trial. Active cluster LEDT (69 LEDs with wavelengths 660/850 nm, 10/30 mW, 30 seconds total irradiation time, 41.7J of total energy irradiated) or an identical placebo LEDT was delivered under double-blinded conditions to the middle of biceps humeri muscle immediately before exercise. All subjects performed voluntary biceps humeri contractions with a workload of 75% of their maximal voluntary contraction force (MVC) until exhaustion. Results: Active LEDT increased the number of biceps humeri contractions by 12.9% (38.60 [SD +/- 9.03] vs. 34.20 [SD +/- 8.68], P = 0.021) and extended the elapsed time to perform contractions by 11.6% (P = 0.036) versus placebo. In addition, post-exercise levels of biochemical markers decreased significantly with active LEDT: Blood Lactate (P = 0.042), Creatine Kinase (P = 0.035), and C-Reative Protein levels (P = 0.030), when compared to placebo LEDT. Conclusion: We conclude that this particular procedure and dose of LEDT immediately before exhaustive biceps humeri contractions, causes a slight delay in the development of skeletal muscle fatigue, decreases post-exercise blood lactate levels and inhibits the release of Creatine Kinase and C-Reative Protein. This study aimed to investigate the effect of 830 nm low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on skeletal muscle fatigue. Ten healthy male professional volleyball players entered a crossover randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled trial. Active LLLT (830 nm wavelength, 100 mW output, spot size 0.0028 cm(2), 200 s total irradiation time) or an identical placebo LLLT was delivered to four points on the biceps humeri muscle immediately before exercises. All subjects performed voluntary biceps humeri contractions with a load of 75% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force until exhaustion. After active LLLT the mean number of repetitions was significantly higher than after placebo irradiation [mean difference 4.5, standard deviation (SD) +/- 6.0, P = 0.042], the blood lactate levels increased after exercises, but there was no significant difference between the treatments. We concluded that 830 nm LLLT can delay the onset of skeletal muscle fatigue in high-intensity exercises, in spite of increased blood lactate levels.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the influence of the urea and glycine fuels on the synthesis of Mn-Zn ferrite by combustion reaction The morphology and magnetic properties of the resulting powders were investigated. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption (BET), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), and magnetic measurement of M x H curves. The X-lay diffraction patterns indicated that the samples containing urea resulted in the formation of crystalline powders and the presence of hematite as a secondary phase The samples containing glycine presented only the formation of crystalline and monophases (Mn,Zn)Fe(2)O(4). The average crystallite size was 18 and 35 nm and saturation magnetization was 3.6 and 75 emu/g, respectively, for the samples containing urea and glycine. The samples synthesized with glycine fuel showed better magnetic properties for application as soft magnetic devices. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved

The addition of both Ti-C and Cr as grain refiners in Nd-Fe-B nanocomposites substantially increases the coercive field Hc. This motived our investigation of the effect of Ti-C and Cr on Pr-Fe-B nanocomposites. Melt-spun ribbons of composition (Pr(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6))(0.97-x)Cr(x)(TiC)(0.03)(x = 0; 0.25; 0.5; 0.75; 1) and (Nd(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6))(0.97-x)Cr(x)(TiC)(0.03)(x = 0.5 and 1) were produced for study. For a Pr nanocomposite with 1% Cr, Hc = 12.5 kOe. However, the energy product was limited to 13.6 MGOe by the remanence value. Rietveld analysis of X-ray spectra showed the ribbons to consist of predominantly hard (similar to 70 wt%) R(2)Fe(14)B, the soft phase being (similar to 30 wt%) alpha-Fe. Mossbauer measurements at 300 K are consistent with a reduced hyperfine field for the hard magnetic phase due to the Cr addition. Analysis of transmission electron microscopy images showed the Pr nanocomposite with 1% Cr to have an increased average grain size.

This paper reports the production of bismuth germanate ceramic scintillator (Bi4Ge3O12) by combustion synthesis (SHS) method, focusing on the influence of the synthesis parameters on the crystalline phases and agglomeration of the nanoparticles. The synthesis and sintering conditions were investigated through thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction as function of temperature, dilatometry and scanning electron microscopy. Well-dispersed Bi4Ge3O12 powder was accomplished by the combustion of the initial solution at pH 9, followed by low temperature calcination and milling. Sintered ceramics presented relative density of 98% and single crystalline Bi4Ge3O12 phase. The luminescent properties of the ceramics were investigated by photo- and radio- luminescence measurements and reproduced the typical Bi4Ge3O12 single-crystal spectra when excited with UV, beta and X-rays. The sintered ceramics presented light output of 4.4 x 10(3) photons/McV. (c) 2008 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

DD K is an antimicrobial peptide previously isolated from the skin of the amphibian Phyllomedusa distincta. The effect of cholesterol on synthetic DD K binding to egg lecithin liposomes was investigated by intrinsic fluorescence of tryptophan residue, measurements of kinetics of 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein (CF) leakage, dynamic light scattering and isothermal titration microcalorimetry. An 8 nm blue shift of tryptophan maximum emission fluorescence was observed when DD K was in the presence of lecithin liposomes compared to the value observed for liposomes containing 43 mol% cholesterol. The rate and the extent of CF release were also significantly reduced by the presence of cholesterol. Dynamic light scattering showed that lecithin liposome size increase from 115 to 140 nm when titrated with DD K but addition of cholesterol reduces the liposome size increments. Isothermal titration microcalorimetry studies showed that DD K binding both to liposomes containing cholesterol as to liposomes devoid of it is more entropically than enthalpically favored. Nevertheless, the peptide concentration necessary to furnish an adjustable titration curve is much higher for liposomes containing cholesterol at 43 mol% (2 mmol L-1) than in its absence (93 mu mol L-1). Apparent binding constant values were 2160 and 10,000 L mol(-1), respectively. The whole data indicate that DD K binding to phosphatidylcholine liposomes is significantly affected by cholesterol, which contributes to explain the low hemolytic activity of the peptide.
