A thermodynamic study involving 7-nitro-1,3,5-triaza adamantane, 1, and its interaction with metal cations in nonaqueous media is first reported. Solubility data of 1 in various solvents were used to derive the standard Gibbs energies of solution, Delta G(s)degrees in these solvents. The effect of solvation in the different media was assessed from the Gibbs energy of transfer taking acetonitrile as a reference solvent. (1)H NMR studies of the interaction of 1 and metal cations were carried out in CD(3)CN and CD(3)OD and the data are reported. Conductance measurements revealed that this ligand forms lead(II) or zinc complexes of 1: 1 stoichiometry in acetonitrile. It also revealed a stoichiometry of two molecules of 1 per mercury(II) and two cadmiu (II) ions per molecule of 1. The addition of silver salt to 1 led to the precipitation of the silver-1 complex which was isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography. At variance with conductance measurements in solution, in the solid state the X-ray structure show`s a 1:1 stoichiometry in the Hg(II) complex. The themiodynamics of complexation of 1 and these cations provide a quantitative assessment of the selective behavior of this ligand for ions of environmental relevance.

Highly stable and crystalline V(2)O(5) nanoparticles with an average diameter of 15 nm have been easily prepared by thermal treatment of a bariandite-like vanadium oxide, V(10)O(24)center dot 9H(2)O. Their characterization was carried out by powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The fibrous and nanostructured film obtained by electrophoretic deposition of the V(2)O(5) nanoparticles showed good electroactivity when submitted to cyclic voltammetry in an ionic liquid-based electrolyte. The use of this film for the preparation of a nanostructured electrode led to an improvement of about 50% in discharge capacity values when compared with similar electrodes obtained by casting of a V(2)O(5) xerogel. The synthesis and characterization of lanthanide(III) citrates with stoichiometries 1:1 and 2:3; [LnL center dot xH(2)O] and [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O], Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu are reported. L stands for (C6O7H5)(3-) and LH for (C6O7H6)(2-). Infrared absorption spectra of both series evidence coordination of carboxylate groups through symmetric bridges or chelation. X-ray powder patterns show the amorphous character of [LnL center dot xH(2)O]. The compounds [Ln(2)LH(3)center dot 2H(2)O] are crystalline and isomorphous. Emission spectra of Eu compounds suggest C-2v symmetry for the coordination polyhedron of [LnL center dot xH(2)O] and C-4v for [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O]. Thermal analyses (TG-DTG-DTA) were carried out for both series. The thermal analysis patterns of the two series are quite different and both fit in a 4-step model of thermal decomposition, with lanthanide oxides as final products.

The search for more efficient anode catalyst than platinum to be used in direct alcohol fuel cell systems is an important challenge. In this study, boron-doped diamond film surfaces were modified with Pt, Pt-SnO(2) and Pt-Ta(2)O(5) nano-crystalline deposits by the sol-gel method to study the methanol and ethanol electro-oxidation reactions in acidic medium. Electrochemical experiments carried out in steady-state conditions demonstrate that the addition of SnO(2) to Pt produces a very reactive electrocatalyst that possibly adsorbs and/or dissociate ethanol more efficiently than pure Pt changing the onset potential of the reaction by 190 mV toward less positive potentials. Furthermore, the addition of Ta(2)O(5) to Pt enhances the catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation resulting in a negative shift of the onset potential of 170 mV. These synergic effects indicate that the addition of these co-catalysts inhibits the poisoning effect caused by strongly adsorbed intermediary species. Since the SnO(2) catalyst was more efficient for ethanol oxidation, it could probably facilitate the cleavage of the C-C bond of the adsorbed intermediate fragments of the reaction.
