In this work, a sol-gel route was used to prepare Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) glassy thin films by spin-coating technique looking for the preparation and optimization of planar waveguides for integrated optics. The films were deposited on silica and silicon substrates using stable sols synthesized by the sol-gel process. Deposits with thicknesses ranging between 520 and 720 nm were prepared by a multi-layer process involving heat treatments at different temperatures from glass transition to the film crystallization and using heating rates of 2 degrees C/min. The structural characterization of the layers was performed by using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy as a function of the heat treatment. Microstructural evolution in terms of annealing temperatures was followed by high resolution scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Optical transmission spectra were used to determine the refractive index and the film thicknesses through the envelope method. The optical and guiding properties of the films were studied by m-line spectroscopy. The best films were monomode with 620 nm thickness and a refractive index around 1.664 at 980 nm wavelength. They showed good waveguiding properties with high light-coupling efficiency and low propagation loss at 632.8 and 1550 nm of about 0.88 dB/cm. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Complexes [Zn(2)(HL(1))(2)(CH(3)COO)(2)] (1) and [Zn(2)(L(2))(2)] (2) were synthesized with salicylaldehyde semicarbazone (H(2)L(1)) and salicylaldehyde-4-chlorobenzoyl hydrazone (H(2)LASSBio-1064, H(2)L(2)), respectively. The crystal structure of (1) was determined. Upon recrystallization of previously prepared [Zn(2)(HL(2))(2)(Cl)(2)] (3) in 1:9 DMSO:acetone crystals of [Zn(2)(L(2))(2)(H(2)O)(2)]center dot[Zn(2)(L(2))(2)(DMSO)(4)] (3a) were obtained. The crystal structure of 3a was also determined. All crystal structures revealed the presence of phenoxo-bridged binuclear zinc(II) complexes. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the structural characterization of the indan derivative (+/-)-1-trans-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-1-carboxamide, which was unambiguously determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to be a racemate (R/S: 50/50) crystallizing in an achiral crystal structure (P2(1)/c, a = 9.3180(1) , b = 7.9070(2) , c = 19.7550(4) , beta = 103.250(1)A degrees, V = 1416.75(5) (3) and Z = 4). The diastereomers are related by the inversion symmetry and linked by H bond forming a dimer. The crystal packing is stabilized by hydrogen bonds, including the classical one responsible for the formation of centrosymmetric dimers, and non-classical ones involving C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi-aryl interactions. The intra and intermolecular geometry of the title compound is compared to the (+/-)-1-trans-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-1-carboxylic acid one, which also present an achiral crystal structure from racemates (R/S: 50/50). The two indan derivatives crystallize in a very similar unit cell.

A soil microorganism identified as Bacillum megaterium was found to produce several antibiotics substances after growth for 20 h at 37A degrees C in a mineral culture medium. Analysis both by electron spray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) identified these substances as lipopeptides. Predominant peaks at m/z 1,041 and m/z 1,065 revealed ions which are compatible with surfactins and lichenysins, respectively. Two other ions m/z 1,057 and m/z 1,464 were further studied by collision-induced dissociation (CID) unveiling an iturin A at the first and fengycins A and B at the second m/z peaks. The CID spectrum of the m/z 1,464 ion also suggests the existence of fengycins A and B variants in which Ile was changed to Val in the position 10 of the peptide moiety. Raw mixtures of all these compounds were also assayed for antibiotic features. The data enlighten the unusual diversity of the lipopeptide mixture produced by a sole Bacillus species.

A new aliphatic block copolyester was synthesized in bulk from transesterification techniques between poly((R)-3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(isosorbide succinate) (PIS). Additionally, other two block copolyesters were synthesized in bulk either from transesterification reactions involving PHB and poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) or from ring-opening copolymerization of l-lactide and hydroxyl-terminated PHB, as result of a previous transesterification reactions with isosorbide. Two-component blends of PHB and PIS or PLLA were also prepared as comparative systems. SEC, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS), (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy, WAXD, solubility tests, and TG thermal analysis were used for characterization. The block copolymer structures of the products were evidenced by MALDI-TOFMS, (13)C NMR, and WAXD data. The block copolymers and the corresponding binary blends presented different solubility properties, as revealed by solubility tests. Although the incorporation of PIS sequences into PHB main backbone did not enhance the thermal stability of the product, it reduced its crystallinity, which could be advantageous for faster biodegradation rate. These products, composed of PHB and PIS or PLLA sequences, are an interesting alternative in biomedical applications.

A high-energy intermediate in the peroxyoxalate reaction can be accumulated at room temperature under specific reaction conditions and in the absence of any reducing agent in up to micromolar concentrations. Bimolecular interaction of this intermediate, accumulated in the reaction of oxalyl chloride with hydrogen peroxide, with an activator (highly fluorescent aromatic hydrocarbons with low oxidation potential) added in delay shows unequivocally that this intermediate is responsible for chemiexcitation of the activator. Activation parameters for the unimolccular decomposition of this intermediate (Delta H(double dagger) = 11.2 kcal mol(-1); Delta S(double dagger) = -23.2 cal mol(-1) K(-1)) and for its bimolecular reaction with 9,10-diphenylanthracene (Delta H(double dagger) = 4.2 kcal mol(-1); Delta S(double dagger) = -26.9 cal mol(-1) K(-1)) show that this intermediate is much less stable than typical 1,2-dioxetanes and 1,2-dioxetanones and demonstrate its highly favored interaction with the activator. Therefore, it can be inferred that structural characterization of the high-energy intermediate in the presence of an activator must be highly improbable. The observed linear free-energy correlation between the catalytic rate constants and the oxidation potentials of several activators definitely confirms the occurrence of the chemically initiated electron-exchange luminescence (CIEEL) mechanism in the chemiexcitation step of the peroxyoxalate system.

In this work, the electronic and structural characterization of polyaniline (PANI) formed in cavities of zeolites Y (ZY) and Mordenite (MOR) and montmorillonite (MMT) clay having Cu(II) as oxidant agent are presented. The formation of PANI and its structure is analyzed by Resonance Raman, UV-Vis-NIR, FT-IR and N K XANES techniques. In all cases the structure of PANT formed is different from the ""free"" polymer. The presence of azo bonds linked to phenazine-like rings are observed only for PANI-MMT composites, independent of the kind of oxidant agent employed in the synthesis. The presence of Cu(II) ions leads to the formation of Phenosafranine-like rings. The presence of these phenazine-like rings in the structure of confined PANT chains can also contribute to the enhancement of the thermal stability observed for all composites. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The triruthenium carboxylate cluster [Ru(3)O(OAc)(6)(py)(2)(bpp)](+) (OAc = acetate) containing the bridging 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp) ligand, and its dimeric species [{Ru(3)O(OAc)(6)(py(2))}(2)(mu-bpp)](2+) were synthesized in order to investigate their inclusion compounds with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD). Characterization of the complexes was carried out based on spectroscopic, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques, while the formation of inclusion complexes was evaluated using (1)H NMR/NOESY spectroscopy. Since bpp is a flexible ligand, a DFT study was carried out in order to characterize its conformational isomers and their possible role in the host-guest chemistry with beta-CD. Instead of observing the formation of inclusion compounds with different stoichiometries, we observed the formation of 1:1 bpp/beta-CD compounds in which the bpp ligand assumes different conformations. The assembly of polymetallic rotaxane species was successfully demonstrated by monitoring the (1)H NMR spectra of the monomeric cluster species in the presence of aquapentacyanoferrate(II) ions and beta-CD.

This paper presents a study on the ethanol oxidation reaction using SnO(2)@Pt/C core-shell structures as electrocatalysts. All the materials used, including Pt/C and PtSn/C E-tek, were 20% (w/w) metal on carbon. The formation of core-shell nanoparticles (SnO(2)@Pt/C) was measured by UV-vis spectrophotometry. X-ray diffraction measurements showed Pt (shell) diffraction patterns without influence from the SnO(2) core and without any shift in 2 theta values for Pt. The diameters of the core-shell particle structures, measured using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, were in the range of 3-16 nm. The electrochemical profile for SnO(2)@Pt/C in an acidic medium (H(2)SO(4) at a concentration of 0.5 mol L(-1)) was almost the same as the typical electrochemical behavior for Pt in an acidic medium. Furthermore, the onset potential for the ethanol oxidation reaction using SnO(2)@Pt/C was almost the same as that for PtSn/C E-tek (0.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode). However, the mass current peak densities for ethanol oxidation were 50% higher on SnO(2)@Pt/C than on PtSn/C E-tek. In the polarization curve, the mass current density for ethanol oxidation was higher at all potentials for SnO(2)@Pt/C when compared to Pt/C and PtSn/C E-tek. At 0.5 V, the current mass density for ethanol oxidation on SnO(2)@Pt was 2.3 times of that for the same process on the commercial material. The electrocatalytic activity of SnO(2)@Pt/C for ethanol oxidation was associated with an increase in the electrochemically active surface area. However, an electronic effect should also be considered because the Pt shell changes its electronic structure in the presence of the foreign core. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Ethanol oxidation reaction on PtCeO(2)/C electrocatalysts prepared by the polymeric precursor method
Resumo:
This paper presents a study of the electrocatalysis of ethanol oxidation reactions in an acidic medium on Pt-CeO(2)/C (20 wt.% of Pt-CeO(2) on carbon XC-72R), prepared in different mass ratios by the polymeric precursor method. The mass ratios between Pt and CeO(2) (3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3) were confirmed by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). X-ray diffraction (XRD) structural characterization data shows that the Pt-CeO(2)/C catalysts are composed of nanosized polycrystalline non-alloyed deposits, from which reflections corresponding to the fcc (Pt) and fluorite (CeO(2)) structures were clearly observed. The mean crystallite sizes calculated from XRD data revealed that, independent of the mass ratio, a value close to 3 nm was obtained for the CeO(2) particles. For Pt, the mean crystallite sizes were dependent on the ratio of this metal in the catalysts. Low platinum ratios resulted in small crystallites. and high Pt proportions resulted in larger crystallites. The size distributions of the catalysts particles, determined by XRD, were confirmed by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) imaging. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometic experiments were used to evaluate the electrocatalytic performance of the different materials. In all cases, except Pt-CeO(2)/C 1:1, the Pt-Ceo(2)/C catalysts exhibited improved performance when compared with Pt/C. The best result was obtained for the Pt-CeO(2)/C 1:3 catalyst, which gave better results than the Pt-Ru/C (Etek) catalyst. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mixed-ligand complexes of technetium(V) or rhenium(V) containing tridentate N-[(dialkylamino)(thiocarbonyl)]benzamidine (H(2)L(1)) and bidentate N,N-dialkyl-N`-benzoylthiourea (HL(2)) ligands were formed in high yields when (NBu(4))[MOCl(4)] (M = Tc or Re) or [ReOCl(3)(PPh(3))(2)] was treated with mixtures of the proligands. Other approaches for the synthesis of the products are reactions of [MOCl(L(1))] complexes with HL(2) or compounds of the-composition [ReOCl(2)(PPh(3))(L(2))] with H(2)L(1). The resulting air-stable [MO(L(1))(L(2))] complexes possess potential for the development of metal-based radiopharmaceuticals. [TcO(L(1))(L(2))] complexes are readily reduced by PPh3 with formation of [Tc(L(1))(L(2))(PPh(3))]. The resulting Tc(III) complexes undergo two almost-reversible oxidation steps corresponding to one-electron transfer processes. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2009)

The phytopathogenic bacterium Xylella fastidiosa is the etiological agent of various plant diseases. To survive under oxidative stress imposed by the host, microorganisms express antioxidant proteins, including cysteine-based peroxidases named peroxiredoxins. This work is a comprehensive analysis of the catalysis performed by PrxQ from X. fastidiosa (XfPrxQ) that belongs to a peroxiredoxin class still poorly characterized and previously considered as moderately reactive toward hydroperoxides. Contrary to these assumptions, our competitive kinetics studies have shown that the second-order rate constants of the peroxidase reactions of XfPrxQ with hydrogen peroxide and peroxynitrite are in the order of 107 and 106 M(-1) s(-1), respectively, which are as fast as the most efficient peroxidases. The XfPrxQ disulfides were only slightly reducible by dithiothreitol; therefore, the identification of a thioredoxin system as the probable biological reductant of XfPrxQ was a relevant finding. We also showed by site-specific mutagenesis and mass spectrometry that an intramolecular disulfide bond between Cys-47 and Cys-83 is generated during the catalytic cycle. Furthermore, we elucidated the crystal structure of XfPrxQ C47S in which Ser-47 and Cys-83 lie similar to 12.3 angstrom apart. Therefore, significant conformational changes are required for disulfide bond formation. In fact, circular dichroism data indicated that there was a significant redox-dependent unfolding of alpha-helices, which is probably triggered by the peroxidatic cysteine oxidation. Finally, we proposed a model that takes data from this work as well data as from the literature into account.

Zinc oxide is a widely used white inorganic pigment. Transition metal ions are used as chromophores and originate the ceramic pigments group. In this context, ZnO particles doped with Co, Fe, and V were synthesized by the polymeric precursors method, Pechini method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) techniques were used to accurately characterize the distinct thermal events occurring during synthesis. The TG and DSC results revealed a series of decomposition temperatures due to different exothermal events, which were identified as H(2)O elimination, organic compounds degradation and phase formation. The samples were structurally characterized by X-Ray diffractometry revealing the formation of single phase, corresponding to the crystalline matrix of ZnO. The samples were optically characterized by diffuse reflectance measurements and colorimetric coordinates L*, a*, b* were calculated for the pigment powders. The pigment powders presented a variety of colors ranging from white (ZnO), green (Zn(0.97)Co(0.03)O), yellow (Zn(0.97)Fe(0.03)O), and beige (Zn(0.97)V(0.03)O).

The crystal structure of the title compound, a promising ligand for chelatoterapies in the treatment of Alzheimer`s disease, has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffractometry. The compound crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2/c with Z = 4. The dimeric 8-quinolinol molecule is sited on a crystallographic twofold axis passing through the CH(2) carbon atom that links the symmetry related molecular halves, giving rise to a two-bladed propeller-like conformation. The (1)H and (13)C NMR as well as the IFT-IR and Raman spectra of the compound were also recorded and are briefly discussed. Some comparisons with spectra of related species are made. Fluorescent AlPO(4) xerogels doped with different amounts of Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) laser dye were prepared by a one-step sal-gel process. In addition, mesoporous AlPO(4) glasses obtained from undoped gels were loaded with different amounts of Rh6G by wet impregnation. Optical excitation and emission spectra of both series of samples show significant dependences on Rh6G concentration, revealing the influence of dye molecular aggregation. At comparable dye concentrations the aggregation effects are found to be significantly stronger in the gels than in the mesoporous glasses. This effect might be attributed to stronger interactions between the dye molecules and the glass matrix, resulting in more efficient dye dispersion in the latter. The interaction of Rh6G with the glassy AlPO(4) network has been probed by (27)Al and (31)P solid-state NMR techniques. New five- and six-coordinated aluminum environments have been observed and characterized by advanced solid-state NMR techniques probing (27)Al-(1)H and (27)Al-(31)P internuclear dipole couplings. The fractional area of these new Al sites is correlated with the combined fractional area of two new Q(3Al)((0)) and Q(2Al)((0)) phosphate species observed in the (31)P MAS NMR spectra. Based on this correlation as well as detailed composition dependent studies, we suggest that the new signals arise from the breakage of Al-O-P linkages associated with the insertion process.
