Synchronization and chaos play important roles in neural activities and have been applied in oscillatory correlation modeling for scene and data analysis. Although it is an extensively studied topic, there are still few results regarding synchrony in locally coupled systems. In this paper we give a rigorous proof to show that large numbers of coupled chaotic oscillators with parameter mismatch in a 2D lattice can be synchronized by providing a sufficiently large coupling strength. We demonstrate how the obtained result can be applied to construct an oscillatory network for scene segmentation. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study by numerical simulations the time correlation function of a stochastic lattice model describing the dynamics of coexistence of two interacting biological species that present time cycles in the number of species individuals. Its asymptotic behavior is shown to decrease in time as a sinusoidal exponential function from which we extract the dominant eigenvalue of the evolution operator related to the stochastic dynamics showing that it is complex with the imaginary part being the frequency of the population cycles. The transition from the oscillatory to the nonoscillatory behavior occurs when the asymptotic behavior of the time correlation function becomes a pure exponential, that is, when the real part of the complex eigenvalue equals a real eigenvalue. We also show that the amplitude of the undamped oscillations increases with the square root of the area of the habitat as ordinary random fluctuations. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report in detail oscillatory magnetoresistance in double quantum wells under microwave irradiation. The experimental investigation contains measurements of frequency, power and temperature dependence. In theory, the observed interference oscillations are explained in terms of the influence of subband coupling on the frequency-dependent photoinduced part of the electron distribution function. Thus, the magnetoresistance shows the interference of magneto-intersubband and conventional microwave induced resistance oscillations.

Path-integral representations for a scalar particle propagator in non-Abelian external backgrounds are derived. To this aim, we generalize the procedure proposed by Gitman and Schvartsman of path-integral construction to any representation of SU(N) given in terms of antisymmetric generators. And for arbitrary representations of SU(N), we present an alternative construction by means of fermionic coherent states. From the path-integral representations we derive pseudoclassical actions for a scalar particle placed in non-Abelian backgrounds. These actions are classically analyzed and then quantized to prove their consistency.

We report on the experimental observation of vortex formation and production of tangled vortex distribution in an atomic BEC of (87)Rb atoms submitted to an external oscillatory perturbation. The oscillatory perturbations start by exciting quadrupolar and scissors modes of the condensate. Then regular vortices are observed finally evolving to a vortex tangle configuration. The vortex tangle is a signature of the presence of a turbulent regime in the cloud. We also show that this turbulent cloud has suppression of the aspect ratio inversion typically observed in quantum degenerate bosonic gases during free expansion.

In this work we investigate the dynamical Casimir effect in a nonideal cavity by deriving an effective Hamiltonian. We first compute a general expression for the average number of particle creation, applicable for any law of motion of the cavity boundary, under the only restriction of small velocities. We also compute a general expression for the linear entropy of an arbitrary state prepared in a selected mode, also applicable for any law of motion of a slow moving boundary. As an application of our results we have analyzed both the average number of particle creation and linear entropy within a particular oscillatory motion of the cavity boundary. On the basis of these expressions we develop a comprehensive analysis of the resonances in the number of particle creation in the nonideal dynamical Casimir effect. We also demonstrate the occurrence of resonances in the loss of purity of the initial state and estimate the decoherence times associated with these resonances. Since our results were obtained in the framework of the perturbation theory, they are restricted, under resonant conditions, to a short-time approximation. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. In this paper, we analyze the action of the gravitational field on the dynamical Casimir effect. We consider a massless scalar field confined in a cuboid cavity placed in a gravitational field described by a static and diagonal metric. With one of the plane mirrors of the cavity allowed to move, we compute the average number of particles created inside the cavity by means of the Bogoliubov coefficients computed through perturbative expansions. We apply our result to the case of an oscillatory motion of the mirror, assuming a weak gravitational field described by the Schwarzschild metric. The regime of parametric amplification is analyzed in detail, demonstrating that our computed result for the mean number of particles created agrees with specific associated cases in the literature. Our results, obtained in the framework of the perturbation theory, are restricted, under resonant conditions, to a short-time limit.

We have studied a Bose-Einstein condensate of (87)Rb atoms under an oscillatory excitation. For a fixed frequency of excitation, we have explored how the values of amplitude and time of excitation must be combined in order to produce quantum turbulence in the condensate. Depending on the combination of these parameters different behaviors are observed in the sample. For the lowest values of time and amplitude of excitation, we observe a bending of the main axis of the cloud. Increasing the amplitude of excitation we observe an increasing number of vortices. The vortex state can evolve into the turbulent regime if the parameters of excitation are driven up to a certain set of combinations. If the value of the parameters of these combinations is exceeded, all vorticity disappears and the condensate enters into a different regime which we have identified as the granular phase. Our results are summarized in a diagram of amplitude versus time of excitation in which the different structures can be identified. We also present numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation which support our observations. (C) 2011 by Astro Ltd. Published exclusively by WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA

In this work we study, under the Stratonovich definition, the problem of the damped oscillatory massive particle subject to a heterogeneous Poisson noise characterized by a rate of events, lambda(t), and a magnitude, Phi, following an exponential distribution. We tackle the problem by performing exact time averages over the noise in a similar way to previous works analysing the problem of the Brownian particle. From this procedure we obtain the long-term equilibrium distributions of position and velocity as well as analytical asymptotic expressions for the injection and dissipation of energy terms. Considerations on the emergence of stochastic resonance in this type of system are also set forth.

In this work an efficient third order non-linear finite difference scheme for solving adaptively hyperbolic systems of one-dimensional conservation laws is developed. The method is based oil applying to the solution of the differential equation an interpolating wavelet transform at each time step, generating a multilevel representation for the solution, which is thresholded and a sparse point representation is generated. The numerical fluxes obtained by a Lax-Friedrichs flux splitting are evaluated oil the sparse grid by an essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) approximation, which chooses the locally smoothest stencil among all the possibilities for each point of the sparse grid. The time evolution of the differential operator is done on this sparse representation by a total variation diminishing (TVD) Runge-Kutta method. Four classical examples of initial value problems for the Euler equations of gas dynamics are accurately solved and their sparse solutions are analyzed with respect to the threshold parameters, confirming the efficiency of the wavelet transform as an adaptive grid generation technique. The question raised in the title has been answered by comparing the solvatochromism of two series of polarity probes, the lipophilicities of which were increased either by increasing the length of an alkyl group (R) attached to a fixed pyridine-based structure or through annelation (i.e., by fusing benzene rings onto a central pyridine-based structure). The following novel solvatochromic probes were synthesized: 2,6-dibromo-4-[(E)-2-(1-methylquinolinium-4-yl)ethenyl]-phenolate (MeQMBr(2)) and 2,6-dibromo-4-[(E)-2-(1-methyl-acridinium-4- yl) ethenyl)]phenolate (MeAMBr(2) The solvatochromic behavior of these probes, along with that of 2,6dibromo-4-[(E)-2-(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)ethenyl]phenol-ate(MePMBr(2)) was analyzed in terms of increasing probe lipophilicity, through annelation. Values of the empirical solvent polarity scale [E(T)(MePMBr(2))] in kcalmol(-1) correlated linearly with ET(30), the corresponding values for the extensively employed probe 2,6-diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium-1-yl)phenolate (RB). On the other hand, the nonlinear correlations of ET(MeQMBr(2)) or ET(MeAMBr(2)) with E(T)(30) are described by second-order polynomials. Possible reasons for this behavior include: i) self-aggregation of the probe, ii) photoinduced cis/trans isomerization of the dye, and iii) probe structure- and solvent-dependent contributions of the quinonoid and zwitterionic limiting formulas to the ground and excited states of the probe. We show that mechanisms (i) and (ii) are not operative under the experimental conditions employed; experimental evidence (NMR) and theoretical calculations are presented to support the conjecture that the length of the central ethenylic bond in the dye increases in the order MeAMBr(2) > MeQMBr(2) > MePMBr(2), That is, the contribution of the zwitterionic limiting formula predominates for the latter probe, as is also the case for RB, this being the reason for the observed linear correlation between the ET(MePMBr2) and the ET(30) scales. The effect of increasing probe lipophilicity on solvatochromic behavior therefore depends on the strategy employed. Increasing the length of R affects solvatochromism much less than annelation, because the former structural change hardly perturbs the energy of the intramolecular charge-transfer transition responsible for solvatochromism. The thermo-solvatochromic behavior (effect of temperature on solvatochromism) of the three probes was studied in mixtures of water with propanol and/or with DMSO. The solvation model used explicitly considers the presence of three ""species"" in the system: bulk solution and probe solvation shell [namely, water (W), organic solvent (Solv)], and solvent-water hydrogen-bonded aggregate (Solv-W). For aqueous propanol, the probe is efficiently solvated by Solv-W; the strong interaction of DMSO with W drastically decreases the efficiency of Solv-W in solvating the probe, relative to its precursor solvents. Temperature increases resulted in desolvation of the probes, due to the concomitant reduction in the structured characters of the components of the binary mixtures.

The batch-operated bromate/phosphate/acetone/dual catalyst system was studied at four temperatures between 5 and 35 degrees C. The dynamics was simultaneously followed by potential measurements with platinum and bromide selective electrodes, and spectroscopically at two different wavelengths. By simultaneously recording these four time series it was possible to characterize the dynamics of the sequential oscillations that evolve in time. The existence of three sequential oscillatory patterns at each temperature allowed estimating the activation energies in each case. Along with the activation energy of the induction period, it was possible to trace the time evolution of the overall activation energy at four different stages as the reaction proceeds. The study was carried out for two different sets of initial concentrations and it was observed that the overall activation energy increases as reactants turn into products. This finding was propounded as a result of the decrease in the driving force, or the system`s affinity, of the catalytic oxidative bromination of acetone with acidic bromate, as the closed system evolves toward the thermodynamic equilibrium.

We report in this paper the occurrence of potential oscillations in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with a Pd-Pt/C anode, fed with H(2)/100 ppm CO, and operated at 30 degrees C. We demonstrate that the use of Pd-Pt/C anode enables the emergence of dynamic instabilities in a PEMFC. Oscillations are characterized by the presence of very high oscillation amplitude, ca. 0.8 V. which is almost twice that observed in a PEMFC with a Pt-Ru/C anode under similar conditions. The effects of the H(2)/CO flow rate and cell current density on the oscillatory dynamics were investigated and the mechanism rationalized in terms of the CO oxidation and adsorption processes. We also discuss the fundamental aspects concerning the operation of a PEMFC under oscillatory regime in terms of the benefit resulting from the higher average power output. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Electrochemical systems are ideal working-horses for studying oscillatory dynamics. Experimentally obtained time series, however, are usually associated with a spontaneous drift in some uncontrollable parameter that triggers transitions among different oscillatory patterns, despite the fact that all controllable parameters are kept constant. Herein we present an empirical method to stabilize experimental potential time series. The method consists of applying a negative galvanodynamic sweep to compensate the spontaneous drift and was tested for the oscillatory electro-oxidation of methanol on platinum. For a wide range of applied currents, the base system presents spontaneous transitions from quasi-harmonic to mixed mode oscillations. Temporal patterns were stabilized by galvanodynamic sweeps at different rates. The procedure resulted in a considerable increase in the number of oscillatory cycles from 5 to 20 times, depending on the specific temporal pattern. The spontaneous drift has been associated with uncompensated oscillations, in which the coverage of some adsorbed species are not reestablished after one cycle; i.e., there is a net accumulation and/or depletion of adsorbed species during oscillations. We interpreted the rate of the galvanodynamic sweep in terms of the time scales of the poisoning processes that underlies the uncompensated oscillations and thus the spontaneous slow drift.

The electrooxidation of small organic molecules on platinum surfaces usually involves different structure-dependent steps that include adsorption and desorption of various species and multiple reaction pathways. Because temperature plays a decisive role on each individual step, understanding its global influence on the reaction mechanism is often a difficult task, especially when the system is studied under far from equilibrium conditions in the presence of kinetic instabilities. Aiming at contributing to unravel this problem, herein, we report an experimental study of the role played by temperature on the electrooxidation of formic acid on a Pt(100) electrode. The system was investigated under both close and far from equilibrium conditions, and apparent activation energies were estimated using different strategies. Overall, comparable activation energies were estimated under oscillatory and quasi-stationary conditions, at high potentials. At low potentials, the poisoning process associated with the formic acid dehydration step presented a negligible dependence with temperature and, therefore, zero activation energy. On the basis of our experimental findings, we suggest that formic acid dehydration is the main, but maybe not the unique, step that differentiates the temperature dependence of the oscillatory electrooxidation of formic acid on Pt(100) with that on polycrystalline platinum.
