Silveira Neto R. Da M. and Azzoni C. R. Non-spatial government policies and regional income inequality in Brazil, Regional Studies. This paper uses both macro- and micro-data to analyse the role of social programmes in the recent reduction in Brazilian regional income inequality. Convergence indicators are presented for different sources of regional income in the period 1995-2006. A decomposition of the Gini indicator allows the identification of the role of each of these income sources with respect to the reduction of regional inequality during the period. The results point out that both labour productivity and government non-spatial policies - mainly minimum wage changes and income transference programmes - do have a role in explaining regional inequality reduction during the period. The treatment of sensorineural hearing loss is based on hearing aids, also known as individual sound amplification devices. The hearing aids purchased by the Brazilian Government, aiming at fulfilling public policies, are based on dedicated components, which bring about benefits, but also render them expensive and may impair repair services after manufacture`s warranty expires. Aim: to design digital behind-the-ear hearing aids built from standardized components coming from the very supply chain of these manufacturers. Study design: experimental. Materials and Methods: to identify the supply chain of these manufacturers, request samples and set up hearing aids in the laboratory. Results: The developed hearing aids did not show lesser electroacoustic characteristics when compared to those acquired by the Government, also being tested by the same reference international technical standard. Conclusion: It is possible to develop digital behind-the-ear hearing aids based on off-the-shelf components from hearing aid manufacturers` supply chain. Their advantages include low operational costs - for acquisition (with clear advantages for the Government) and service (advantage for the patient).

In organ transplantation, the immunosuppression withdrawal leads, in most cases, to rejection. Nonetheless, a special group of patients maintain stable graft function after complete withdrawal of immunosuppression, achieving a state called ""operational tolerance."" The study of such patients may be important to understand the mechanisms involved in human transplantation tolerance. We compared the profile of CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) T cells and the signaling pathways IL-6/STAT3 (signal transducers and activators of transcription) and IL-4/STAT6 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of four kidney transplant groups: (i) operational tolerance (OT), (ii) chronic allograft nephropathy (CR), (iii) stable graft function under standard immunosuppression (Sta), (iv) stable graft function under low immunosuppression, and (v) healthy individuals. Both CR and Sta displayed lower numbers and percentages of CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) T cells compared with all other groups (p < 0.05). The OT patients displayed a reduced activation of the IL-4/STAT6 pathway in monocytes, compared with all other groups (p < 0.05). The lower numbers of CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) T cells observed in CR individuals may be a feature of chronic allograft nephropathy. The differential OT signaling profile, with reduced phosphorylation of STAT6, in monocytes` region, suggests that some altered function of STAT6 signaling may be important for the operational tolerance state. The objective of this study was to select the optimal operational conditions for the production of instant soy protein isolate (SPI) by pulsed fluid bed agglomeration. The spray-dried SPI was characterized as being a cohesive powder, presenting cracks and channeling formation during its fluidization (Geldart type A). The process was carried out in a pulsed fluid bed, and aqueous maltodextrin solution was used as liquid binder. Air pulsation, at a frequency of 600 rpm, was used to fluidize the cohesive SPI particles and to allow agglomeration to occur. Seventeen tests were performed according to a central composite design. Independent variables were (i) feed flow rate (0.5-3.5 g/min), (ii) atomizing air pressure (0.5-1.5 bar) and (iii) binder concentration (10-50%). Mean particle diameter, process yield and product moisture were analyzed as responses. Surface response analysis led to the selection of optimal operational parameters, following which larger granules with low moisture content and high process yield were produced. Product transformations were also evaluated by the analysis of size distribution, flowability, cohesiveness and wettability. When compared to raw material, agglomerated particles were more porous and had a more irregular shape, presenting a wetting time decrease, free-flow improvement and cohesiveness reduction.
