Spatial aspects of trade liberalization in Colombia: A general equilibrium approach

This paper offers some preliminary steps in the marriage of some of the theoretical foundations of new economic geography with spatial computable general equilibrium models. Modelling the spatial economy of Colombia using the traditional assumptions of computable general equilibrium (CGE) models makes little sense when one territorial unit, Bogota, accounts for over one quarter of GDP and where transportation costs are high and accessibility low compared to European or North American standards. Hence, handling market imperfections becomes imperative as does the need to address internal spatial issues from the perspective of Colombia`s increasing involvement with external markets. The paper builds on the Centro de Estudios de Economia Regional (CEER) model, a spatial CGE model of the Colombian economy; non-constant returns and non-iceberg transportation costs are introduced and some simulation exercises carried out. The results confirm the asymmetric impacts that trade liberalization has on a spatial economy in which one region, Bogota, is able to more fully exploit scale economies vis--vis the rest of Colombia. The analysis also reveals the importance of different hypotheses on factor mobility and the role of price effects to better understand the consequences of trade opening in a developing economy.

The stability of the equilibrium outcomes in the admission games induced by stable matching rules

A stable matching rule is used as the outcome function for the Admission game where colleges behave straightforwardly and the students` strategies are given by their preferences over the colleges. We show that the college-optimal stable matching rule implements the set of stable matchings via the Nash equilibrium (NE) concept. For any other stable matching rule the strategic behavior of the students may lead to outcomes that are not stable under the true preferences. We then introduce uncertainty about the matching selected and prove that the natural solution concept is that of NE in the strong sense. A general result shows that the random stable matching rule, as well as any stable matching rule, implements the set of stable matchings via NE in the strong sense. Precise answers are given to the strategic questions raised.

Para tanto, será analisada a presença da imagem da "lei acima dos homens" em diversos textos do Cidadão de Genebra, sobretudo no capítulo "Do legislador" no livro II do Contrato, a fim de mostrar-se que ela corresponde a um mesmo princípio de oposição entre a liberdade, associada ao dever de obediência, e a escravidão, associada ao impulso das paixões, expressando-se de modos particulares nos diversos momentos da obra de Rousseau.

Migration in Afro-Brazilian Rural Communities: Crossing Demographic and Genetic Data

Many studies have used genetic markers to understand global migration patterns of our species. However, there are only few studies of human migration on a local scale. We, therefore, researched migration dynamics in three Afro-Brazilian rural communities, using demographic data and ten Ancestry Informative Markers. In addition to the description of migration and marriage structures, we carried out genetic comparisons between the three populations, as well as between locals and migrants from each community. Genetic admixture analyses were conducted according to the gene-identity method, with Sub-Saharan Africans, Amerindians, and Europeans as parental populations. The three analyzed Afro-Brazilian rural communities consisted of 16% to 30% of migrants, most of them women. The age pyramid revealed a gap in the segment of men aged between 20 to 30 yrs. While endogamous marriages predominated, exogamous marriages were mainly patrilocal. Migration dynamics are apparently associated with matrimonial customs and other social practices of such communities. The impact of migration upon the populations` genetic composition was low but showed an increase in European alleles with a concomitant decrease in the Amerindian contribution. Admixture analysis evidenced a higher African contribution to the gene pool of the studied populations, followed by the contribution of Europeans and Amerindians, respectively.

Detection of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Carriers in a Sample of the Brazilian Population

Background: Spinal muscular atrophy is a common autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder caused by mutations in the SMN1 gene. Identification of spinal muscular atrophy carriers has important implications for individuals with a family history of the disorder and for genetic counseling. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of carriers in a sample of the nonconsanguineous Brazilian population by denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC). Methods: To validate the method, we initially determined the relative quantification of DHPLC in 28 affected patients (DHPLC values: 0.00) and 65 parents (DHPLC values: 0.49-0.69). Following quantification, we studied 150 unrelated nonconsanguineous healthy individuals from the general population. Results: Four of the 150 healthy individuals tested (with no family history of a neuromuscular disorder) presented a DHPLC value in the range of heterozygous carriers (0.6-0.68). Conclusions: Based on these results, we estimated there is a carrier frequency of 2.7% in the nonconsanguineous Brazilian population, which is very similar to other areas of the world where consanguineous marriage is not common. Compound 48/80 induces endothelium-dependent and histamine release-independent relaxation in rabbit aorta

Compound 48/80 (C48/80) is a synthetic condensation product of N-methyl-p-methoxyphenethyl am me with formaldehyde and is an experimental drug used since the 1950s to induce anaphylactic shock through histamine release. This study was carried out to further elucidate the mechanism by which this drug induces nitric oxide (NO) release. Our specific goals were: (a) to verify if C48/80`s relaxation occurs through the stimulation of histamine receptors; (b) to evaluate the endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by C48/80; (c) to identify NO as the endothelium-relaxing factor released by C48/80; (d) to identify the NO synthase (NOS) responsible for NO release; and (e) to verify if the relaxation induced by C48/80 is calcium and cyclic guanidine monophosphate (cGMP) dependent. Rabbit aorta segments, with and without endothelium, were suspended in organ chambers (25 ml) filled with Krebs solution maintained at 37 degrees C, bubbled with 95% O-2/5% CO2 (pH 7.4). Phenylephrine was used to contract the segments. Other protocol drugs included H-1- and H-2-receptor antagonists, cyclooxygenase, NOS, guanylyl cyclase and phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitors. Endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by C48/80 was also studied in calcium-free Krebs solution associated with a calcium chelator. In summary, our investigation demonstrated that the C48/80 vasodilating action: (a) does not depend on H-1 and H-2 histamine receptors; (b) is NO endothelium-dependent; (c) is dependent on the endothelial constitutive NOS (NOS-3) isoform activation; (d) is cGMP-dependent; and that NOS-3 activation by C48/80: (a) is independent of PLC up to 25 mu g/ml and (b) is partially dependent of this lipase in higher doses.
